During the pandemic, camping was supposed to be a fairly safe activity. That's only if you don't camp with Frannie Shoemaker. Frannie and her husband Larry commit in the fall of 2019 to take on a campground hosting job in the spring of 2020. In that time, the world turned upside down and their job came with a whole new set of challenges. But of course, where Frannie's involved, other trouble can't be far behind!

Karen Musser Nortman does it again with another Frannie Shoemaker story. Mask of Death kept my interest throughout the story. Readers usually find Frannie front and center in the middle of a mystery and this book finds her in the midst of trouble. As campground managers, she and her husband find themselves with a missing woman, terrible weather, dealing with Covid restrictions, and having to take care of the grandkids too. Whew, several twists to the plot and the story just flies by. Readers who enjoy cozy mysteries and camping stories will not want to miss this one. Michelle Babb does a good job narrating the story which makes for an enjoyable listening experience. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

I have to preface this to say this may not be a book for everyone right now.

Frannie and her husband are working has the hosts of a campground during the height of the pandemic. While dealing with the management and upkeep of a campground, they are having to keep their grandchildren because the daughter-in-law is in the hospital with the virus. In the middle of trying to homeschool and keep things positive for the kids they stumble over a dead body.

I was not that bothered by the fact the book takes place during the pandemic. I was still able to enjoy this mystery. I think things are far enough removed that you can relate to this affects the characters without being too raw and real, for me at least. It was interesting to see how campgrounds dealt with keeping people safe. The mystery aspect was well-written with plenty of twists and turns. I didn’t figure out who was behind the attack.

I listened to the audio version of the book. The narrator does a fabulous job bringing the characters to life. She is great at distinguishing each character’s voice and able to bring out the characters’ emotions.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been by anyone.

This might not be for everyone as it might be too soon but for me it was very interesting. I missed most of the pandemic in this stages as like Beth I was ill, so I am interested to learn what happened (curiosity on my behalf) and it is also very interesting to learn how different countries reacted.

Anyway back to the story, how can Frannie and her family encounter so much, but if not then it wouldnt be so much fun. The sections regarding the weather were interesting as well.

I am hoping that the grandchildren are going to feature going forward, they were quite fun.

The narration really works and Michelle ensures that each character is very different.

Frannie and Larry Shoemaker, and their dog, Cuba, are once again in an RV campground--but not as guests this time. They're here to act as the hosts at a campground only an hour from their home, for the month of May. It's part of their longer-term plan to get an assignment at a campground someplace warmer than Iowa for the winter months. What could possibly go wrong?

Oh, right, it's the Shoemakers, with Larry's sister Jayne-Ann and her husband Mickey coming to join them. Something will happen, and they'll be involved in finding the first signs of trouble. And Frannie will find clues whether she wants to or not. She is patient, she is kind, she is smart, and people talk to her. And now, for this month, they're the campground hosts.

This story is set during the height of the pandemic, and there are rules they've never had to follow before that they now have to be the first line of enforcement for. Wearing masks and encouraging others to do so. Telling people the bad news that group activities that would normally occur are canceled. The shower house is closed. And no socializing between groups. The park rangers are sending out notices to everyone that has reservations, and some are canceling as they get the word. Others are coming anyway, but if they don't comply when they arrive, it will be on Frannie and Larry to explain the rules again. If anyone doesn't comply after explanation and polite requests, they can call the rangers, who will do real enforcement.

Despite this, they're enjoying themselves, especially after Mickey and Jayne-Ann arrive. As a family group that are in and out of each other's homes all the time, they can also socialize at the campground--but they do limit this in order to not set a bad example.

As campers arrive, they have both good and bad encounters, and frankly strange ones, including Mr. Dwayne Dunning. Dunning rented a tent site for his first try ever at camping, and didn't realize that he needed to bring his own tent. Frannie explains that no, he needs to have his own. Being familiar with the area, she's able to tell him where he can buy one. He leaves his sleeping bag at his site, and it's stolen while he's off buying his tent.

There's a family with three lovely kids, and parents who are friendly, and happy to accommodate the change in rules despite the disappointing loss of some activities for the kids. There's a couple who are just not friendly at all, which Larry notes could be an advantage, compared to people who are too friendly, with the new rules. Also others who fall in the normal range of friendliness and willingness to go along with the new rules.

Then one of the friendly, reasonable ones sees someone sleeping on one of the benches along a hiking trail, one morning. He's gone by the time the ranger gets there (a relief to Frannie, for obvious reasons), but it certainly sounds like he's the one who stole Dunning's sleeping bag.

Covid further enlivens the campground, not by illness among the campers, but by the need of various campers to do work online or the children to do schoolwork online, in a place where most carriers have only iffy coverage. The number of children needing school access increases by two when the Shoemakers' son calls to say his wife is now hospitalized with covid, and can they take the kids, please? Juggling online work, keeping up with his wife's condition and needs while not being allowed to visit her, and being both a parent and a schoolteacher to his kids is becoming too much. Of course they agree to take the two kids, and meet halfway to pick them up the next morning.

Then Jayne-Ann finds a woman's shoe on one of the trails--a bloody shoe. And no one has seen the woman of the unfriendly couple. But a serious storm is moving in, and the immediate problem is to figure out where to get adequate shelter for the campers, given that the usual emergency shelter--the shower building--is closed by state order, due to the pandemic. There are unoccupied cabins, in need of renovation and having electricity but no water. Better shelter, at least, than tents or RVs, and just enough of them to give every group their own cabin for the storm. Point to Frannie as a good campground host, because the rangers didn't think of this.

They find the missing woman, badly beaten but alive, in the cabin the Shoemakers have been assigned. Her husband is missing. Sarah-Beth and Joe, Frannie's grandchildren, see a man dressed all in black, walking past on one of the trails while they were relegated to the truck after the discovery of the missing woman.

This is when it stops being a mostly-fun campground experience for the Shoemaker clan, and becomes tense and scary as they have a relatively legitimate inside track on the hunt for a dangerous man, and one person too many knows it. Other campers chime in with useful information, and Frannie and Sarah-Beth each have truly scary experiences.

There are close calls and new revelations.

These are fun books, with wonderful ongoing characters. I really enjoy them. Frannie in particular is just great, and the family and friends that are often with them on their camping adventures are also good, and a lot of fun. I do have a question, though, and fundamentally it's the Cabot Cove question. Don't park rangers have any shared, professional social media? Don't they share stories of the crazy guests the camps have? Hasn't anyone noticed that where the Shoemakers go, trouble follows, regardless of whether they cause any of it or not?

In the real world, I hope so. In this fictional world, I hope they keep on not noticing--at least, not unless Nortman can make an even better story out of that. I don't want these stories to stop.

And as always, Michelle Babb does an excellent job of narration.

Recommended.

With all the heartache that went on with covid 19, I can understand why reading or listening about it might not be everybody's cup of tea but I really enjoyed this book and I didn't need a tissue. We all know the struggles we went through during this time but the author not only managed to give us an idea of what it was like living on a campsite (even with things you would never think of) but also added some extra problems and twists. I liked the characters and at book 10, even with covid restrictions, the old familiar characters and fan favourites were able to join in not only on the investigation but also on the banter. I loved that Frannie's grandchildren joined the group. The story did focus more on covid and the weather but Frannie still managed to get herself tangled up in an investigation. Just love this series.
Frannie and Larry agree to play host for a campground in the hope that if they do a good job it might lead to a good position in the winter months. Then covid 19 hits and everything changes. Now they have to try and help enforce the tighter restrictions but Frannie's daughter in law ends up in hospital with covid and she and Larry are left taking care of there two grandchildren. Home schooling is bad enough with no internet but with a storm on the way and a missing camper things are about to get a whole lot worse. Can Frannie and her family survive what is about to hit and find the missing woman?
I liked the narrator. She is a pleasure to listen to and this is the type of book (and narrator) that you just want to hear all in one sitting.

Frannie and Larry took their first campground hosting job for the first time in May 2020, when the Covid Pandemic was still in full swing. Things got then more complicated due to weather inclemencies and a woman that suddenly went missing.

I want to say that this book may not be for everyone due to the circumstances surrounding the mystery. I had indeed mixed feelings about the premises. While we were in strict lockdown in Spain, even with parks closed, people in other countries were allowed to go camping. It just didn’t seem these people lived the same pandemic as we did, and I found some of the attitudes around masking and social distancing a bit disturbing. This doesn’t mean that it was a good book. The story was great but the setting wasn’t probably the right one for me.

The mystery was well built, with some twists and turns and some redeeming events that show us that more often than not, things are not what they seem. I liked the presence of Frannie’s grandchildren, and what they added to the story.

The best part was Michelle Babb’s narration. I always say that Babb could narrate the phone book and make it interesting. She is a natural! Her character interpretations are just amazing, bringing the characters to life in a way that it feels like watching real people interact. Michelle Babb has an expressive and natural narration style that works well with this genre, but I am sure she would do wonders on any other kind of book.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Mask of Death is like traveling through time to the earlier days of Covid 19 where masks were required everywhere, isolation was a the rule of the day and fear was king. Karen Musser Nortman does an outstanding job of painting the picture of those early pandemic months. They mystery is almost secondary to this bleak backdrop, but it all came together and was quite enjoyable. For a fairly short book, it is filled to the brim with campers (nice and not-so-nice), a missing person, mysterious goings on, and a huge storm, all taking place under Covid’s large shadow. This book is well worth the listen.

The narration by Michelle Babb is capable as she once again brings gives life to Frannie and Larry Shoemaker, their family and a host of other characters. I love the bit of snark Ms Babb is able to inflect to Frannie’s inner thoughts, as well as the warmth between the series regulars.

I highly recommend this book, if only as a great reminder of how things were just a couple of years ago. That said, I did enjoy the mystery and the writing. Four and a half stars.

Well worth the wait!!!

I love this series and Karen Missed Norman did not disappoint with this latest installment of the Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries!!!! Not only is the storyline riveting, but the camping tips and recipes in the back of the book are wonderful!

This time around, Frannie and Larry take on the challenge of being first-time campground hosts in hopes of gaining experience and a recommendation for more hosting positions in the future. COVID has just made its presence known and new precautions must be learned and followed. It's May, a quiet time of year for camping and a good time to work in their first hosting experience. But followers of this series know that where Frannie and Larry go, trouble will be found!!! From an early season tornado to an attack on one of the campers, this book is filled with non-stop action from beginning to end. I highly recommend this series!!!

This is another fun part of The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries. I have listened to almost all of these audiobooks and I have really enjoyed each one. I think part of it is the camping/RV aspect of it (never done it, but it piques my interest), as well as the characters being a little bit older.

Frannie and her husband are actually in charge of a campground this time around. That's different, but it's not different that Frannie ends up finding danger. This book was also unique in that it takes place during the Covid pandemic and includes all the precautions that we all had to take.

I really like the narration by Michelle Babb for these books. Her voice tends to lend a steadiness to the characters and makes them more down to earth.

I was gifted a copy of this audiobook. All thoughts are my own.

Fannie and her husband agree to host a campsite for a month but then Covid hits and on in it three months and they find their hosting duties and the camping site very different than they expected but really how long could the pandemic last, another 3 months? LOL. But it isn’t Covid that leads to this body.
I really love these books and it is easy to point out that this book must have been written at the beginning of Covid but that doesn’t matter as the book still has its top-notch adventure and suspense. It is so good to see Cuba back and know that Frannie doesn’t disappoint even with social distancing.

This is the 10th book in this series. The main characters are Frannie and Larry. They want to be camp hosts somewhere warm but need some experience . So they sign up for May at a campground close by and it is the start of Covid and that makes everything more of a challenge. Their first week they have cold rainy weather and a few campers that mostly complain about what they can't do. The there is a tornado and they find a woman who has been missing beat up and left for dead. Then the grandkids need them and some crazy guy is chasing Frannie. Frannie is beginning to figure it all out but will she be fast enough or will it be too late ?

Another great Frannie Shoemaker adventure. This time she and Larry are the hosts for the campground for the month of May. This happens near the beginning of the pandemic so things are a little different. Then a severe storm strikes the campground and a woman is discovered in one of the cabins which are to be used for shelter but she survives the attack which was made on her. Then the guy that beat her kidnaps Frannie but she is rescued before they get out of the campground and the rest of the month goes more smoothly. Look forward to the next adventure.

Cracking mystery

This is a cracking mystery. A little more serious in then others in this series dealing with the early days of the pandemic. Frannie and her husband are trying out being campground hosts and dealing with odd guests, had weather, family issues, an attack and Covid restrictions. The mystery is great as usual, the characters are good and the ending satisfactory. I really loved these books. Michelle Babb is a accomplished narrator prefect for these stories.

Mask of Death: The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries, Book 10, my second read from author Karen Musser Nortman. Enjoyable 3-hour 52-minute, 202-page cozy mystery. As a camper, nearing retirement, my wife and I have talked about campground hosting so the book was even more enjoyable. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Michelle Babb. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author as I get them. Mask of Death was a great read by Karen Musser Nortman. Camping was supposed to be one of the only fairly safe activities during the pandemic. Frannie and her husband committed to take on a campground hosting job in the spring of 2020. During that time the world turned upside down and there were new challenges that they dealt with. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

" Time to party."
Such a fun series following Frankie Shoemaker, her husband, and usually some other members of the extended family as they joyfully meet together with their trailers for happy camping and the inevitable murder. Easy reading, great characters and fun exploring, plus a mystery to be solved, all most ably performed by Michelle Babb.
Enjoy the outing.

Another Winner!

Love, love, love this series! The words flow so effortlessly on the page. I would love to go camping with this group of people. They are genuine and real down to earth kind of people. The storyline in this book was a little different than the rest, but I loved it! There were some heart pounding moments in it too! Can't wait to read more!!

If you follow the Jeannie Shoemaker campground series you need to read Book 10

The mystery was solved mid way through the book where I have enjoyed the mystery being solved at the end of the book. Being camp host was a bit different but still enjoyed the storyline. Looking forward to book #11.

The tenth book in this series and it's a good one. Frannie and Larry are going to try their hand at being a Campground Host at a state park close to their hometown. But COVID 19 hits the world, so there are Lots of restrictions on activities and changing procedures by the day. Top that off with a cozy mystery and the gang is having a crazy camping experience. Enjoy.

Poor Frannie gets in trouble without even trying

Finally Larry and Frannie are giving hosting at a campground a try. It can't be that hard can it?
Add the Pandemic, their daughter-in-law being hospitalized with Covid, a night time tornado, and a mysterious person dressed all in black haunting the campground into the mix and things can just go over the top.
Really enjoyable read.

Are you sure you want to RV? 😂

I enjoyed this very believable story, told about RVing adventures during the COVID pandemic.
Giving me flashbacks of masking-up and social distancing, I recalled delightful memories (NOT!) of those times.
The author does a great job knowing her subject and with pulling story details together.
I will read more of her books!

Mask of Death (The Frannie Shoemaker Ca…
by Karen Musser Nortman

I have read and or listened to all the Frannie Shoemaker series, and

always anxiously await theie next adventure. I read the Kindle edition of

this book, back in Febuary. I enjoyed the new concept of Frannie and

Larry becoming camp hosts. Covid-19 added another layer to the story.

The only thing missing was the wonderful narration of Michelle Babb. If I

remember correctly, I asked her if she was going to narrate this one. She

said not at that time. I was disappointed, but this was like a Christmas

gift.

I await Frannie and friends futher adventures, from the team of Karen

Musser Nortman and Michelle Babb.

I was given this audio book at my request. I offer my honest opinon in a

another great adventure

I’ve every book that Karen MusserNortman written and they each have been a great adventure. Mask of Death is yet another of Frannie Shoemakers adventures only during COVID, and it’s a dilly! I suggest this anyone including children, and especially anyone that camps or RV’s.
