Sweet, a pleasing art style, and with a focus on communication in relationships that is refreshing for the genre He makes sure we talk before I get myself too bend out of shape
Enjoyable and I definitely would like to pick up the volume to which this book is a sequel!
Featuring Yuujiro Matsukaze, judo champion, an aspiring architect. He is quite short (Quit kissing my forehead. It just reminds me of how much taller you are) and occasionally bothered by that. He is together with Rui Hanamine 186cm long, creative, half French, domestic and with a lot of housekeeping skills. Tall bottom representing one could say, which is good in a genre where height almost always is used as a signifier to one’s character role.
The boys are in their final year of high school and in general they are quite clear eyed on the choices they need to make. Yuujiro for instance says: It’s already pretty incredible to make enough to live your life without any restrictions kind of fawning over the glitter of middle class financial stability.
And: Then again, it might be impossible to afford a stand alone house right away, which, definitely combined with the wish of a cooking island and a garden seems a realistic take on things (the Tokyo housing market, am I right 😂).
Seasons are chapters, and besides some steaming scenes, there is a focus on emotional maturity and talking things out instead of the trope of misunderstanding and misinterpretation growing out of hand. Very well done in that department, and you really feel they are supposed to work together as a couple on that level. Also family and societal reaction is a source of anxiety, but not being made overly problematic, a refreshing take as well.
There is some (maybe unintentional) humor as well, this cracked me up:This is not the time to moping. It’s time to get your butt in gear!, being said before a motorcycle ride. And one character expressing appreciation to another by saying: Even your faintly visible smile lines are lovely also had me chuckle.
Even the conclusion of not being limited by love and focussing on personal growth and happiness besides a focus on each other was really nice in messaging. Overall a well drawn story, with good subversion of what one might expect of the genre. Very enjoyable!
Sequels to stories that already have an established happily-ever-after are tricky. The author needs to build upon the original happy ending without destroying it, but there also needs to be believable new tension to the romance. I am pleased to report that Dekoboko Bittersweet Days does a lovely job with this, incorporating realistic relationship problems while still allowing us to believe, even in the worst moments, that Yuujirou and Rui will be able to find happiness together. Since the first volume took place in high school, this means that Atsuko Yusen has a built-in easy way to throw a hurdle in their path: college. With graduation looming, Rui and Yuujirou have to reconcile their different career dreams with their mutual desire to stay together, and this gives Rui a much-needed chance to prove that he's more than just the sweet boy who follows Yuujirou's lead. The both have to grow up, in other words, and while that does give us a couple of very difficult chapters, it really is worth it in the end - especially since one of their worries, coming out to their families, turns out not to be such a terrible thing after all.
I didn't think it was possible to follow up the first book so well. I'm glad to be proven wrong.
I love these two so much!!! The angst in this one was almost unbearable but it felt so realistic. I could eat up more and more stories about these two’s relationship because it’s just perfect and so so sweet!
A sweet, cute and refreshing bl manga that was undoubtedly very pleasurable to read.
"Deboboko Bittersweet Days" follows Yuujirou and Rui who are childhood best friends and now..lovers. The book is set in high school. The boys are in their final year. With graduation looming, life presents them new hurdles. Yuujirou plans to be a architect and Rui, a fashion designer. Now they have to reconcile their career dreams with their mutual desire to stay together forever. They are in love with each other but afraid of confessing that to each other. And now that Rui is planning to go to France for studying, their blooming relationship faces the biggest challenge ever. Will the boys be able to overcome their fears and risk to choose an uncertain future where they might or might not stay together??
I was approved for the arc months ago and ended up taking too long to get around reading it. I'm slightly mad at myself for that. Because this manga was so cute! The characters were fleshed out nicely and they were so adorable. I loved how frequently and patiently they communicated with each other. And we all know communication makes a romance perfect, right? 😁 So, of course, I loved Rui and Yuujirou. The humor was wonderful too.
But still, I have to say that this manga wasn't anything special. The plotline wasn't unique. It felt to common and too generic. I read so many bl mangas, lots of which are so good, this one just fell flat for me. The steamy scenes were so awkward. Lots of parts and dialogues didn't make sense. The story moved faster than necessary. And the ending...it was unsatisfying. So, overall, it was a 3 stars read for me.

Thanks to Netgallery and publishers for providing me an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The long awaited follow up to Dekoboko Sugar Days, this sequel is a deeper dive into this precious and pure friendship set on fire. With obstacles and hurdles in the way of their happily ever after, Yuujirou and Rui are back with as much charm, sweetness, and a few tears - but those were 100% on me.
If I'm well-read in a few genres, Yaoi is definitely on of them, being back with these two is definitely a refreshing story in a milieux that's often fraught with toxicity and miscommunication.
So apparently this book is a sequel and now I have to hunt book one down because OMGGGGG this was ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE! Also, I didn't feel like I missed anything because the first few pages summarize what happened in B1 and I've read enough BL to kind of know what happened (but also now I just want to experience more of these two cuties!!). And you know, this has your typical sexy fun time with our main characters, which was nice, but this book hit so many of MY KINKS. Like, the height difference was just *chef's kiss* amazing like omg I need more of this, and just, the way the characters were drawn had some nice weight. Like, I loved how thick they were. Rui for being tall it's obvious he'd be big but even Yuuijirou was described as buff and I believed it (less deets when the clothes came off but that's ok, we can't always have everything, LOL)
And the drama, AHHHHH. Not atypical for BL but I loved how it was coupled with some seriousness and passion from the characters. I think I felt about both characters the way Rui's grandmother felt when she met Yuujirou. And it was so refreshing and just, amazing in a way. I wish my children so much happiness <3 Oh and those side characters....WILL I BE LEFT HANGING OR WHAT
Boyfriends Yuujirou and Rui are reaching the end of high school. Yuujirou is ready to commit to living together and to coming out to their families-- but Rui wants to chase his career dreams by studying abroad. A more serious story than the first about a couple facing their first really big challenge. Also spicier than book one!
First off, Thank you NetGalley for this ARC! I absolutely lovedddd it. Ugh my heart was warmed by everything that was happening in the story. I was teetering in between 4.5 and 5 for a while just because the angst almost made me cry and I really can’t handle too much sadness in love sometimes. But it was realistic even though I just wanted them to be happy. But the ending really sealed the deal for me and bumped it back up to a 5.
Maybe a minor spoiler?, but I loved being able to see them go their separate ways for a while but still love each other and stay together and work through it all. The airport scene was tugging at my heart strings heavy. Honestly I loved this so much, maybe even a tad bit more than the first one just because I got to see them older and in love. I wish I could see more!
Also maybe there will be a bit more of a spin off with Takenaka and Umino?👀 I’m looking forward to whatever gets put out next by Atsuko Yusen!
I loved seeing the flashbacks to when Yuujirou and Rui were kids. It was cute getting to see their friendship at such a young age.
There were several sex scenes in this volume. Makes sense since they are now in a committed relationship and not just pining for each other, but it was a bit much. I did find it kind of funny though that they blurred out Yuujirou’s penis in the drawings during the scene on the beach where Rui was giving him his first blow job.
I also don’t blame Rui for wanting to study abroad and going to France for college. Considering that he wants to get his degree in Design, that would be an incredible idea. I get that Yuujirou needed time to digest the news though, but it would have been nice to see a more encouraging boyfriend from him at that moment instead of only feeling sorry for himself.
I received a copy from LOVE x LOVE through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Rui and Yuujirou have been best friends since they were kids. Now that they confessed the feelings they’ve been harboring for each other, it should be smooth sailing. They haven’t told anyone about their relationship, but life is good until they face the possibility of a long-distance relationship. Will their relationship survive this bump in the road?
I’m going to be honest here. I’m a clown and didn’t realize this was the second in a series. That said, the opening of the book is a reminder of everything that went down in the first volume before kicking off the story, so I wasn’t lost at all. I will be reading the first volume, but as I write this review, I have not read it yet. I can say that it’s very easy to get into the story thanks to the refresher that’s intended for anyone who didn’t reread the first volume before digging in.
I absolutely loved the story from the start. It’s a very sweet story about best friends who have always known they were meant for each other. While I missed out on watching them confess their feelings and discover they feel the same way, I did get to see them in love and living their best lives. I also got to see them hit their first big struggle in their relationship, but I won’t mention if that’s resolved because that would be spoilers!
I loved every character that was featured. While I love Rui and Yuujirou, Rui’s brother is my favorite character in the book. I do wish we got to know the supporting characters more, but it’s entirely possible that we got to know them well in the first volume. I’ll find out when I read that. However, as it stands, some of the supporting characters fly through while others are there often but don’t get much character growth. If this series were to continue, that’s something I’d love to see.
All in all, I think it’s a wonderful love story full of funny and sweet moments. This is the second book I’ve read from Atsuko Yusen, and I’m excited to see what else they come up with. So far, this is the second cute and heartwarming story with a touch of humor that I’ve read from them and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.
I can not tell you the joy I felt when I saw this pop-up in my Amazon recommendations. I had no idea we were getting another Dekoboko Sugar Days and I instantly put it into my cart and checked out.
After the ending of Dekoboko Sugar Days, I was hesitant to pick this volume up. We already obtained our happily ever after, so I was worried about where the author would take it and how she would pick up after her stand-alone volume. However, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed all the real moments that Rei and Yuujirou shared together.
Unlike other Yaoi manga, this one really hit the "this could happen in real-life" button. Rui and Yuujirou are faced with a lot of uncertainty as the end of their senior year looms closer. You have Yuujirou who is planning out his and Rui's next steps, never wanting to part from him. Yet, you have Rui looking into a few dreams of his own.
This volume focuses all on "high-school sweethearts" and how they can sustain a relationship after high school as well as follow their own dreams. While Rui and Yuujirou have their separate dreams, they also have dreams of them carving out a life with each other.
Also, is it just me or did Yusen's art style evolve and become...I don't even know how to explain it - soft, elegant, timeless. Her art style was stunning in Dekoboko Sugar Days but in Dekoboko Bittersweet Days the art is phenomenal. It reflects the sweetness of Rui and the love he has for Yuujirou. I was just in awe of the art and after reading it the first time through, I went back and just looked at her art.
Dekoboko Bittersweet Days is even better than the first part of the series! It's not common actually, so this surprised me positively. Yuujirou and Rui were childhood friends, but they actually got together already in the first part and now in this second they need to think about the future. High school is over soon and the boys need to think about where to study and it's not necessarily the same place, the same country even. I really loved the realism and how nothing is a real obstacle if you fight for what you love. The slow burn romance and real feelings get through easily and all in all, the manga is heartwarming and melancholic too. Growing up is never easy.
The art looks cute and funny even at times, which is a good counterpart to the somewhat sad feeling lingering over the story. The structure is good and the rhythm too as it flows nicely and steadily. Somehow this second part pulls the story better together and the pace is great. Also, it's always great to read about couple being together instead of just getting together.
I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first book; it is, as the title says, bittersweet. That's my favorite flavor of chocolate, but not my favorite flavor of romance. But that's obviously a matter of taste, not the quality of the ingredients.
I received this book from Netgalley/publisher in exchange of an honest review.
OMGGGG My boys are back! Two years after I read Dekoboko Sugar Days we finally have the sequel! Dekoboko Bittersweet Days!~ I was just absolutely excited and hyped when I saw the book pop up on Netgalley~
This review will be chaotic. I am sorry. I want to write a review, but I also just want to lie on the ground and flail around a bit. XD
I loved that we got a Chapter 0 explaining how our guys got together and how things continue. I am happy with that because while I know most of the things, it has been two years, so a refresher is just perfect~ Thanks!
And the story just picks up where we left~ We see our couple and see them manoeuvre through life. Have some fun moments. Sexy moments. We even get some flashbacks to when they were children and I just adored that those were added. We see our boys (and their friends) thinking of what to do next in their lives, college/university is fast approaching and they have to do decide. I do have to say I was a tad pissed at Rui. I mean, he knew there was that chance. He knew that he may go to there. I just wished he had talked it over with Yuujirou in time, not when he told the teacher about what was going to happen. I am glad that they talked quickly afterwards and not let it fester and ruin things. And you know, now that they talked I could also kind of understand why Rui is considering this option. But from this moment… something has changed between the two, also made bigger because they cannot come out to their family. My heard just broke.
I wasn’t sure about Takenaka because of how obsessed he seemed with Rui (at times I was confused into who he was more interesting the sister or the brother)… but he did step up big time in the parts where the relationship with Rui and Yuujirou fell apart. He was there to punch (literally) some sense into Yuujirou and I loved that. I was worried he would just interfere and do something horrible, but here he is, being a hero. Doing what a good friend should do.
There are so many sex scenes. OMG, I knew that they had reached that next step in the previous book, but holy wow. XD But no complaints here. The scenes were well-written. Plus, I am so happy with yaoi with consent and happy relationships. I loved that both of them took the lead and Rui even learned some tricks (which just delivered a priceless expression on Yuujirou’s face).
That final chapter, just chef kiss~ I just have to put this quote here, will put it under spoiler tags because….
Yuujirou: Now that my face is closer to yours…. I can kiss you… more easily.
I was just so happy for my guys and I loved seeing what they were up to. How they were trying to get through those 4 years. Working hard. Both of them doing their own things. Chatting together thanks to the internet and modern communication. Then they met up again, and I was just freaking crying. I keep on crying with this manga. LORD. The tears are flowing! It was just the best ending!
I loved this one, again, sorry for the chaotic review, I tried to sort and organise it a bit better, but I am not sure if it is much better, haha. This manga just makes me so emotional. It is well-written, beautiful, and I love the characters. I will miss them. The art is just gorgeous, at times even more than that!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an eARC of this manga in exchange for my honest review.
Dekoboko Bittersweet Days is the continuation of Rui and Yuujirou's love story. The reader follows these characters' journey in figuring out how relationships work, especially for teens, and how it can impact themselves and their future. The title bittersweet is very accurate for the events that occur in this volume. Teenage love is very easy at first, but near the end of high school and the beginning of adulthood is where things start to change, from personality to priorities, and more. However, love is love, and sometimes putting in effort is enough for it to evolve into something else equally as beautiful. This volume had a great balance of conflict and soft moments that made the story and conclusion phenomenal.
I was a little uncertain going into this manga how it would go. The first volume of the series, Dekoboko Sugar Days, is about Yuujirou and Rui and their friends-to-lovers romance. In this second volume, they're already a couple so you know SOMETHING is going to happen to shake their relationship up! This one (obviously) has a little more angst than the first one, as Yuujirou and Rui think about thinks like how and when to come out to their families, and what it will mean when they head off to college in the fall. The ending felt like it wrapped up just a tad abruptly, but I really loved the way it ended so I won't complain TOO much!
A digital ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for review. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
Thanks to NetGalley and TOKYOPOP for an advanced digital copy to read and review.
Rui and Yuujirou's relationship is in full swing as they enter the final year of high school. They are out to some of their friends, but not their families, and are generally keeping it a secret. Although somehow they are able to find enough privacy and alone time to have tons of sex. They do face some genuine obstacles that would come with having a gay relationship, but not as many as they would probably face in real life. But, this is a fluffy, steamy, boys love manga so let's not think too hard about that! It was a cute, fun, and spicy read and I enjoyed it.
This was a (bitter)sweet sequel to the first volume. The two lovers face a lot of big issues in this volume, and it was heartbreaking to watch them try to figure out life, especially after high school, together. Both characters are just so sweet to each other and I think this is a wonderful representation of a M/M relationship. I loved the Friends-To-Lovers trope in this one and the sweet ending. This volume spanned quite a few years in the characters lives, and at times was difficult to figure out where in the timeline everything was taking place, as we get flashbacks to when the characters were younger, but also the manga speeds through years over just a few pages. Other than that I did enjoy this, and it seemed this was the last volume in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an e-copy of this manga to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved the previous book so I was so excited for this one. The first one was full of fluff and sweet times for our couple. I love a friend-to-lovers situation and this one is that trope to its sweetest.
They are both now in their last year of High School and thinking about their future. Yuuijirou has his future planned but is scared to break it to his boyfriend, and childhood friend Rui. He goes through some inner turmoil and you just want to hug him. They have some big obstacles to overcome. Will they overcome them together or break apart?
There is some great character development here and the story shows us the hardships High School students go through. I loved the ended and I'm glad it's so many years down the line. Many things have changed then, but Rui finally grew taller! I want to see their two best friends together so much. Hopefully, sensei will make it come true.
I received this book from NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
SCREAMING! CRYING! THROWING UP!! THE RINGS??? I can't breath.
I love these two so much!!! This was so fucking cute and it had a little bit of angst in it. Yuujirou causing me unnecessary pain, but it all worked out in the end. They're so in love and wholesome I want to vomit. But also the boldness?? This volume was way spicier than the first one. I mean on the beach?? When did they grow up like this?
Mild spoiler: I was hoping that Takenaka would get his own lil romance because I felt bad for him in the first one, but who'd have thought he'd be a jerk?? I wasn't expecting his romance to be with Yuujirou's friend though. That was a surprise. He's a little cutie and they didn't get much of a romance, but the direction was obvious.
I loved this volume as much as the first. I squealed so many times at the pure cuteness of it. Love it.
