The mistresses and illegitimate children of Scottish monarchs were generally acknowledged and accommodated at court.I am descended from a Scottish King, but, alas, not his Queen. She treats the work of women of this time with reverence and respect.
When you look at an embroidered flower in which the tones of the petals have been executed in carefully graduated hues of the finest silk thread, you should not notice the stitches, but the flower; you should experience it so tangibly that you can almost inhale its perfume.This is quite a deep dive into the last years of Mary's life and while it was sometimes challenging to me, I am very pleased to have read this account of her life, her court, her reign, and her death.
Most importantly, through their display and creation of textiles, they reached an audience. Mary exploited the versatility of her textiles to honour the traditions of the past, mark her emotions and allegiances in her present, and preserve her testimony for the future.Excellent color photography of people and textiles. Also, endnotes, bibliography for further study, and index. Highly recommend.
