Various short stories in Shueisha's Akamaru JUMP followed over the years until he published his one shot "Oumagadoki Doubutsuen" in issue #2/2010 of Weekly Shounen JUMP.

Kouhei Horikoshi is a graduate of Nagoya University of Arts. He was previously an assistant to TANAKA Yasuki.

As of the volumes I've read so far this is definitely my favourite. It was just perfection and it kept on the edge of my sit the whole time. I need to know more. I need to know everything.

Also I think I'm liking Bakugo just as much as Todoroki now. I didn't know that coudl be possible, but it is. The development he goes through. You would not believe he is the same boy from the beginning.

The accumulation of all the good stuff is right here. I love this kind of thing. All that previous leveling up has now got Deku and Shigaraki in a one-on-one battle that's kinda mind-blowing compared to where they started.

Two parallel stories take place in this one and they both culminate to a devastating cliffhanger that will have readers dreading what will come next. First, there's Shigaraki Tomura's grand performance as he goes off on a chase to put an end to everything good that stands, forcing Midoriya and Bakugo to take the lead as Endeavor struggles to fight a weakness to exploit. Second, there's Gigantomachia rampaging toward Jaku City with only the students of U.A. to strategically find a way to stop him. Expect this volume to break hearts by the end.

I'm crying incessant fat tears, swooning on the cover of this volume! It's like I've waited for what feels like FOREVER to reach this point.
This point where Bakugo's anger makes sense to everyone and I can finally explain to everyone what I'd already suspected.
His anger was a by-product of pain and self-doubt and fear and all those dark pesky emotions of one's youth that some of us never outgrow and -- He. Was. Drowning.
Can you blame the guy for hiding beneath all that anger? I don't care if you do. I sure don't! Never did. Never will.

This series is going to be the death of me.

These characters are going through so much so fast and yet these teens especially just keep rising to the challenge and crazy stuff Shigaraki and the League keep chucking at them…! I’m so proud of them all yet so terrified for them at the same time!

Between trying to stop Shigaraki and the rampaging giant, so many people try and fail and triumph only for another curve ball to be thrown at them or another character to get taken out in the most horrifying ways without killing them—this situation just keeps getting worse and worse by the second! (I wasn’t kidding by saying this series is going to be the death of me…) And what Shigaraki did to my beloved Eraser is unforgivable!!!! My only consolations are that he’s still alive and that Deku was just as livid as me, and, boy, did he take action!

And Bakugo…this kid just keeps growing, keeps getting stronger, is more of a friend and hero then ever before and seeing him own up to what he did to Deku in the past…this is wonderful, awesome character growth, people. Those last few pages will forever live in my head, wow, that was powerful and perfectly syncs with Deku waaayyyy back in Volume One in the opposite situation and just…!!! I cannot stress enough how much he’s changed in the course of this series and it’s amazing.

Okay so:

I don’t like Bakugo, and I don’t think I will until he stops being an unreasonable headstrong little shit. I appreciate that he is growing as a character and reflecting upon his past actions, but like I am in no way gonna treat this as a redemption arc-thing because what he did to Izuku is not justifiable, even if he was a small child at the time. (Hot take: shipping Bakugo and Midoriya is more problematic than Drarry).

My Hero Academia, Vol. 29 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (277–285) of the on-going manga series.

It continues the Paranormal Liberation War Arc. Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugō and the other heroes engage a fight with Tomura Shigaraki. Gran Torino is nearly killed by Tomura, who throws one of the quirk-destroying bullets at Shōta Aizawa, thus forcing him to amputate his leg before the drug can spread into his body. Shōto Todoroki joins the fight, but Aizawa closes his eyes, allowing Tomura to regenerate.

Meanwhile, Gigantomachia brings with him the other villains to reach Tomura and overwhelms all the heroes who try to stop him, so Momo Yaoyorozu organizes a plan to stop his advance. The students manage to briefly stall the monster, while Eijirō Kirishima throws a sedative into his mouth as Gigantomachia continues his path of destruction, destroying various cities.

Tomura's body begins to tear itself apart as his upgrade is incomplete, while Midoriya unlocks Nana Shimura's quirk which allows him to float. While Midoriya continues to fight Tomura regardless of the consequences on his physique, Bakugō prepares a plan to help him. Endeavor uses his most powerful move on Tomura, but All For One takes possession of his body and, after injuring Endeavor, tries to strike Izuku as well, but Bakugō saves his classmate by being stabbed in place of him.

Kohei Horikoshi has written and illustrated this tankōbon. It mainly focuses on two battles – the one against Tomura Shigaraki that Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugō, Shōto Todoroki, and many heroes including Endeavour, Shōta Aizawa, and Gran Torino. Meanwhile, Gigantomachia – a kaiju-sized Villain who is All For One's bodyguard and secret weapon, possessing multiple Quirks, makes its way towards Tomura – leaving destruction in his path.

All in all, My Hero Academia, Vol. 29 is a good continuation of the series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read what happens next.

Man once this is animated this is gonna be all kinds of awesome.

Deku, Endevor, Bakugo, Icey Hot, Gran Tarino, Eraser and more verses Shiggy in a great fight that's both epic and emotional. People make bold choices, cut off limbs, sacrifice their body, protect others. Without spoilers, this is the kind of big boss, end of the road, we might not survive fight I like to see. A 4.5-5 out of 5.

The Bakugo growth!! I love it so much. I'm tearing up a bit. So much to fucking process holy shit. This volume really hit me with the bakudeku. I am firmly kiribaku, but shittt. This volume pushed me to the other side a little bit. Damn. What a volume.

This is just more of one long long battle. There is a lot of action and sometimes the art is such I can not tell characters apart - they are all kind of blurring from the action. The fight has been going for a couple of volumes now and frankly I am losing interest in this fight. If I wanted nothing but fights I could just read American comics. What is not helping is characters are finding new powers (or using them for the first time in front of the readers. It is like a Dragon Ball Z episodes - now you can see my super power, well now to counter that I will use my super duper super power, What? Now I have to use this Other super power duper power to top you... this power will not just kill me but destroy the world!!!...... it gets silly after a while.

Not to mention, why has the super fast guy "class president" not done recon and found out the rest of the heroes and classmates need lots of (his) help? I mean waiting for orders? The coms are down. He could have stopped some of these villains cold. Not to mention the lady who makes things float? Could have been useful to stop the unstoppable mountain bad guy. Oh and more flashbacks! that is what is needed during a highly danger battle.

Like I said not bad but taking a while to get there so end the battle or the world so we can move on. ;-)

It was poetic, beautiful, and I am so ready for this new arc in Bakugo's story.

I also want to say that Bakugo and Midoriya's rivalry (and their general relationship) is just better than any other one I've seen (fuck you Naruto and Sasuke). Don't @ me though.

EN RESUMEN
Bakugo Katsuki: Rising. That's it. That's the plot.

ASPECTOS POSITIVOS
- Empecemos por esa portada. Ambas, la de la sobrecubierta del tomo y la de la portada propiamente dicha. Las portadas de los volúmenes de MHA empezaron bien pero luego de cierto arco empezaron a ser MALDITAMENTE INCREÍBLES. La portada de este tomo es igual de increíble que las demás pero incluso más por el simbolismo que guarda, por lo que significa para los personajes (a.k.a Bakugo) y lo que significa para el tema principal de MHA. Porque no se si la gente no se dio cuenta a estas alturas pero MHA es una historia sobre manos. Y no, no es broma.
Me encanta que Horikoshi decidiera poner a un Bakugo grande con un Deku chiquito, como demostrando que el pasado no puede ser cambiado. Bakugo no puede volver en el tiempo y tomar la mano de Deku de chiquito. Por eso la mirada de ABSOLUTO ARREPENTIMIENTO con la que Bakugo extiende su mano es fundamental. Y EL CONTEXTO. EN EL PUTO LAGO EN EL QUE SE CAYÓ. FUCK?
Y luego tenemos al pequeño Bakugo, volando en el cielo. Al principio no lo entendés y después llegas a ese capítulo final Y TODO TIENE SENTIDO PORQUE EL PEQUEÑO BAKUGO ESTÁ A PRESENCIANDO COMO EL FUTURO BAKUGO SE SACRIFICA POR LA PERSONA QUE ÉL JURABA ODIAR. FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK??????? MY EMOTIONS?????????
- Shigaraki. Tengo un cariño muy profundo por su desarrollo y crecimiento. Su arco con las Fuerzas de Liberación le dio ese empuje que andaba necesitando después de tantas batallas perdidas. Por lo que llegar a este volumen y ver lo irónico de que su "liberación" haya sido un engaño me frustró bastante. Casi hasta podría decir que una parte mía quería ver hasta donde llegaba ese Shigaraki todo invencible, incluso aunque eso significara la destrucción de la sociedad de héroes. Sin embargo, eso no quiere decir que no aprecie este nuevo giro. Como dije, hay un sentido bastante irónico que es a propósito. Shigaraki está siendo manipulado por AFO para que se convierta en su sucesor, pero eso viene con un lado negativo. AFO no lo va a soltar así como así. Me gusta que el tipo siga dando pelea encerrado desde la cárcel, a metros y metros bajo el agua.
Lo que si recalco como una de las mejores escenas en este tomo repleto de mejores escenas, es la del discurso que le da a Endeavor y los demás. LOCO. HORIKOSHI. HERMANO. CALMATE UN POCO. Es frustrante que los héroes, aquellos que salvan, no entiendan de dónde viene el dolor de Shigaraki y los únicos que podamos comprenderlo somos los lectores. Sus diálogos, que antes nos parecían vacíos y que venían de la boca de un loco, ahora tienen un contexto, una historia. Sus palabras ya no son sólo palabras. Muchas cosas que pasan en MHA podrían haber sido evitadas si alguien que no sea AFO hubiese salvado a Tenko.
- Mt. Lady. Que mujer. La heroína que necesitábamos y no lo sabíamos. Un personaje que apareció en el primer capítulo como la personificación del lado más superficial de la sociedad de héroes y a lo largo de la historia Horikoshi se encargó de darle un arco cuando no era estrictamente necesario que lo haga. Después de todo, Mt. Lady es un personaje muy secundario. No obstante, le agradezco mucho al autor por darle este momento de brillar. Verla dejando todo por detener a Gigantomachia es emocionante que juro casi me largo a llorar.
- Momo. MI PERSONAJE FEMENINO PREFERIDO, NO SE DIGA MÁS. Midnight ya lo deslizó en su batalla contra la clase B y en este arco queda claro: Momo nació para idear planes y liderar. Su momento de brillar no decepcionó en ningún aspecto. Con un desastre natural acercándose para matarlos a todos y la posible muerte de una de sus profesores, Momo logró demostrar de qué está hecha y por qué su futuro como heroína es brillante. Nunca estuve tan orgullosa de un personaje como lo estuve con Momo.
En ese sentido, también estoy super orgullosa de toda la clase, A y B. Todos esos arcos de entrenamiento por fin están dando sus frutos y el trabajo en equipo que mostraron es perfecto. Quiero más de esto en el arco final, Horikoshi, por favor, muchas gracias.
Eso sí, hay que hablar de la escena con Kirishima, Mina y Gigantomachia. Cuando la leí me encantó el paralelismo con la escena del pasado entre estos tres personajes. Ahora era el turno de Kirishima de salvar a Mina. Sin embargo, cuando empecé a leer otras reseñas muchos remarcaban esta escena como decepcionante y, luego de releerla y verlo todo con un poco más de contexto, entiendo un poco mejor de dónde vienen esas críticas (con las que concuerdo en algunos aspectos). Horikoshi, como muchos otros escritores hombres en este género/demografía, no es necesariamente bueno escribiendo personajes femeninos (a.k.a Ochako). No es tan malo como otros (ejem ejem Kishimoto, Kubo, Mashima, Togashi ejem ejem), pero podría mejorar. Las chicas de la clase A raras veces brillan igual que los chicos, no tienen oportunidad de mostrar las capacidades de sus dones, las heroínas profesionales tienen que esperar casi 300 capítulos y casi 30 volúmenes para poder hacer algo relevante, y son los personajes femeninos las que el autor usa para el fanservice. Además no nos olvidemos del hecho de que Horikoshi redujo su heroína principal a un interés amoroso cuando eso no era con lo que había comenzado su arco y no le dio nada más para poder crecer como personaje independiente de Deku. Aunque, dicho esto, las cosas buenas que el autor logra son realmente muy buenas: las amistades entre las chicas, la diversidad de personalidades, objetivos y diseños.
Es justamente por ese trato molesto no tan malo pero tampoco tan bueno que la escena con Mina decepciona. Horikoshi terminó el capítulo anterior haciéndonos creer que iba a ser el momento en el que Mina se iba a lucir, en el que las tantas veces en la que otros vivían diciendo que Mina era la más poderoso entre las chicas del A iba a probarse con el enfrentamiento cara a cara con Machia. El tipo encima la puso en la portada del capítulo. El capítulo que se llama Red Riot.
Lo entiendo. Mina es una niña y al reconocer la voz de Machia se asusta como cualquier otro niño lo haría si se lo forzara a enfrentarse a un monstruo así. Es una reacción completamente normal. Pero tampoco se puede negar el historial de Horikoshi con sus personajes femeninos, por lo que esto también queda como otra oportunidad desperdiciada. Momo, Mt Lady y Midnight brillaron mucho en este tomo y sus escenas me encantaron, pero eso no quiere decir que nos debamos contentar con eso. Quiero ver a todos mis niños, chicas y chicos, siendo badass y teniendo arcos argumentales satisfactorios, y sé que Horikoshi tiene la capacidad para hacerlo.
En fin. Ese fue mi mini rant/mini observación de ese aspecto.
- La tensión que se crea con un solo tomo es INCREÍBLE. Hasta ahora los personajes se enfrentaron a situaciones muy engorrosas pero lograron salir victoriosos de alguna forma. Acá solo hay caos y desesperación, y se siente en cada página, en cada expresión de los personajes, en cada sacrificio. Por primera vez en todo el manga no tengo idea como mierda van a hacer los héroes para reponerse de esto. Hay mucha destrucción. No es solo una ciudad. Esa escena en la que Iida, Ochako y los demás se dan cuenta que todo el plan se fue a la mierda cuando el noticiero empieza a nombrar la cantidad infinita de ciudades que están en peligro de ser devastadas por Gigantomachia es terrorífica. Imposible no desesperarse cuando escuchas eso.
- Gigantomachia. Fue introducido como un monstruo sin mucho pensamiento salvo su adoración por AFO. Lo que este tomo hace es darle un poco más de personalidad e inteligencia que potencia su destrucción. Funciona perfecto como la otra principal fuerza antagonista aparte de Shigaraki y la Liga. Es más, funciona mucho más que los nomus. Gigantomachia está empezando a dar miedo y la destrucción que está causando se siente casi apocalíptica.
- El dibujo sigue siendo perfecto. No puedo creer que este manga sea semanal. Me dan ganas de que el tipo se tome el trabajo de dibujar un manga mensual o cuando se le cante para ver hasta dónde puede llegar con su arte.
- Bakugo. FUCK. No odiaba a Bakugo al principio de la historia, pero tampoco lo amaba. Desde el momento que se nos presentó el mundo y la forma en la que funciona, entendí que el autor tenía planes para Bakugo y que esa era la razón por la que necesitaba estar cerca de Deku, por la que sus arcos debían ir en consonancia. Sí, volví a leer 28 tomos de esta historia no solo porque la amo con todo mi corazón, sino también porque en el momento en que vi la portada del tomo 29 entendí que para apreciar lo que sea que iba a pasar en ese volumen tenía que tener fresco el camino que recorrió Bakugo desde el capítulo 1.
Todavía no terminamos con la historia ni con su arco, pero si esto sigue así Bakugo Katsuki puede llegar a convertirse en uno de los mejores personajes de este manga. Su desarrollo es hermoso de ver. Emocionante en serio. Horikoshi hizo algo muy arriesgado: crear un rival desagradable, nacido para que lo odies. No es como Sasuke o demás, personajes que empiezan en el lado bueno, como rivales amistosos, pero cuyo arco juega con el lado malo más adelante. Lo que Horikoshi hace con Bakugo me sorprende constantemente. Cuando fue secuestrado por la Liga, mis war flashbacks producto de Naruto me dijeron que ahí terminaba todo, que Bakugo se iba a aliar con los villanos y de ahí en más teníamos un Naruto 2. El discurso de Aizawa y la seguridad con la que Bakugo dejó en claro que nunca se uniría a los villanos me hizo darme cuenta que no lo conocía ni lo entendía como creía que lo hacía. Cada vez que Deku decía que lo admiraba mi mente como que simplemente lo aceptó y listo, nunca me detuve a analizar lo que eso significaba. Porque Horikoshi creó a Bakugo para que lo odies pero también para que lo admires igual que Deku. Eso es lo que me gusta de su personaje: el tipo es insoportable por momentos y después va y te demuestra lo inteligente y poderoso que es (ya tenía diseñado un ataque especial mucho antes de que fueran introducidos como tarea a los alumnos. Estoy segura que Bakugo es el héroe en la clase que mejor conoce su don).
La escena flashback es clave y una de mis preferidas. Bakugo está haciendo todo lo contrario a Endeavour. Endeavour pidió perdón primero, se dio cuenta que eso no era lo correcto y luego empezó a probar su arrepentimiento con acciones. Bakugo quiere probarse primero y luego pedir perdón. Y eso es importantísimo para mi porque los perdones que son solo palabras no sirven. Un arco de redención no quiere decir que te convertís en otra persona, sino que te convertís en mejor persona, y no solo con aquellos a los que heriste (porque como ya establecimos en el arco de la Agencia de Endeavour, esas personas tienen la opción de no perdonarte y eso es igual de aceptable) sino con todos. Además, esa escena es importante porque es de las pocas en la que Bakugo es sincero, sin su actitud tsundere interponiéndose. Acepta lo que le hizo a Deku, sus debilidades e inseguridades. Y también admite estar preocupado por él.
Todo eso desemboca en el capítulo Rising, otro capítulo lleno de paralelismos que te hacen emocionarte. Y encima, para rematar, Bakugo recuerda con arrepentimiento la escena del primer capítulo, en la que se burlaba del sueño de Deku. COMO PRETENDÉS QUE NO LLORE HORIKOSHI. Y ENCIMA ME LA TERMINÁS AHÍ????
En fin. Estoy muy ansiosa por saber qué sigue y hacia dónde va a llevar Horikoshi el desarrollo de Bakugo. Ver a Deku y Bakugo pasar de amigos de la infancia a bully/víctima a enemigos a rivales propiamente dichos a amigos de nuevo es de mis cosas preferidas de este manga.

ASPECTOS NEGATIVOS
- Nada en absoluto y quién diga lo contrario está equivocado :)

CONCLUSIÓN
Este arco es una montaña rusa y cada nuevo tomo no hace más que subir la apuesta. Toda la desesperación que los personajes sienten traspasan las páginas y los desarrollos están alcanzando niveles increíbles que esperaba hace tiempo. Literalmente no puedo esperar al próximo volumen.

Is Bakugo one of my favorites in the series/anime? Hell no

Does he still give on my nerves (and give me a migraine)? Yup, yup he does

But can/will I say he's definitely one of the most complicated anime characters? Yes

Will I also say that he definitely has had such a character development throughout the series? Yes

This volume is packed full of action fights, specifically against Gigantomachia and AFO/Shigaraki. While the Giganto fight was really good, the last few chapters in this book with Shigaraki really killed it with the storytelling!
