Chinese Argonauts: an Anthology of the Chinese Contribution to the Historical Development of Santa Clara County was written by students at Foothill College in Los Altos, California in 1971. The editor was Gloria Sun Hom. Hom taught at Foothill College and later at several other community colleges in Northern California included my alma mater West Valley College. Hom studied at Dominican College in San Rafael, Stanford and earned a doctorate at The University of San Francisco. She ran for the California State Senate once as a Republican but was not elected. I found this 200 page collection of student written essays to be very informative, I now know much more about the Chinese presence in California in the 19th Century. I noticed a few editing errors but not enough to spoil the book. The copy I read was in complete shape when I took it off the shelf but unfortunately the binding has not held up after 50 years. Pages began falling out as I read, a problem with some paperback books. They are not build for the ages. Whole sections of this copy were free of the binding by the time I was finished. So unfortunately this copy of Chinese Argonauts will go into the recycling bin. I hope other copies have survived.
