Playing for their country in the Winter Olympics is the highest of all honors, but when family members are pitted as rivals and a dark specter from the past turns up in Beijing, tensions run high, and abruptly, it’s not all about the hockey.
Jared is torn—assistant coach for Team Canada, with Ryker on the team; he bleeds red and white and wears the maple leaf with pride. Only Ten is now a rival, and not only that, but the country they’re all playing in frowns on his marriage and keeps him and Ten apart. Jared wants to win gold for his country and his son, but he’d be so proud if Ten were to win. He’s confused and concerned, but when a face from their past turns up to play, he’s furious.
Being picked for Team USA is one of the things Tennant dreamed of when he was a little boy. All of his other aspirations have come true through hard work, determination, and pure talent. Now he’s about to represent his country in front of the world, and the pressure is starting to build. He’s also just come face-to-face with a hated rival from a dark period in his past. Add in the burden of squaring off against his husband and stepson, and Ten is feeling the pressure to be perfect.

This was a lovely catch-up with Ten and Jared as they face each other on different teams at the (fictional version of) the 2022 Olympics, along with some other familiar faces from this writing duo's interconnected ice hockey series'.
It's both a lot of fun, and also carries a more serious note, as it looks into not only the homophobia still prevalent in many parts of the world, but also the trauma suffered by both Ten and young goalie Bryan Delaney when the douchebag is called in as a last minute replacement for his country.
With the usual deft hand these two authors have, we get a rollercoaster of a ride through the highs and lows of professional sport - after all there can only be one Gold Medal winner 😁 and a closeup look at the wonderful love which drives the relationship between Tennant and Jared and their extended family.

This was a fun entry in the series, giving us Ten and Jared facing each other in the Olympics, as they play for their respective national teams. (And Stan, playing for Russia, appears a couple of times.) Definitely one that needs to be read after the other series stories with these two guys, it ties up one lingering emotional loose end, and has some wonderful moments between the guys, and exciting hockey action.
Although there's mention of the tension of being gay athletes in a nation with oppressive anti-gay policies (China) that aspect didn't get a lot of actual air time or angst. The isolation of the Olympic village and athletes from the local society cushions them and keeps the issue from rising to the top of concerns. (I admit, I wanted Ten to make more of a big deal out of his name being wrong on his bag, a denial by the USOC of his married status. I guess I hoped to get a little more platform from them in this story.)
These two guys are lovely together, they address the issues of competing against loved ones in believable ways, and I wasn't sure whether I was cheering for Ten and Tate, or for Ryker and Jared, so I was happy with the outcome either way. A series I've enjoyed all the way through so far, and I will be happy with any more we get.

Rivals is book 11 and the Harrisburg Railers series and we are taken back to our first couple, Ten and Jared. This series has spawned several spins off and you’d think after reading so many books written in the same universe things would be getting tired but I found RIVALS was the opposite, it was energising and it left me wanting more.
Jared and Ten are off to the Olympics in China, but they are on opposing teams - the USA and Canada. Jared is torn between wanting to see his one Ryker, playing for Canada win gold and also wanting to see his husband win. Ten is feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders, representing his country, representing LGBTQIA sports people, missing their daughter who was left behind in the USA and even missing Jared as they are separated in opposing team camps.
So personally there is a lot of pressure on Jared and Ten but this is balanced with some really exciting hockey. As a reader from Australia who rarely watches hockey, I found the description of the matches easy to follow and I was on the edge of my seat during some of the matches. I was thrilled to get to see various characters that we’ve met and love throughout this series and its spin offs including, Stan, Tate and Penn.
I had a fantastic time reading RIVALS and I can’t thank the authors enough for continuing to show us what happily ever after actually looks like for Jared and Ten. Also, I’m now all keyed-up to watch the Olympic hockey which starts in just a few weeks time. RIVALS gets five very happy stars from me.
Natürlich will jeder die Goldmedaille holen.

This novella is the 11th book in the series - and I really love them all! This one is absolutely perfectly timed and combines a big message with a very personal one to the guys ... inspired.
I love the Winter Olympics, and even though there may be some issues around the '22 games, I am sure to spend hours with the tv on in the next few weeks. And it will be extra fun to have in mind some of the behind the scenes machinations which this book brings to the fore.
So many threads are pulled together in this installment; possibly seeing Aarni being the most dramatic as it affects every player who had to deal with the incident, and obviously Ten most of all. Then there are the issues of loyalty to a person vv a country, being away from home, being in a closed society, let alone the desire to win a gold medal.
It is absolutely packed full of content, and still there are moments of calm, and peace and the love shines off the page between Jared and Ten ... great read!
Being part in the Olympics is something an athlete only dreams of - but when Jared is asked to be a coach for the Canadian team while his husband Ten is playing for team USA kind of throws a wrench into the happiness of the games. Between wins and loses both men come together and understand the true meaning of family and love. With a few twists thrown in hat the reader will never see coming this was a great addition to the hockey series that RJ Scott and VL Locey are known for. It is always a joy to read about the continuation of love between Jared and Ten - proving once again that they are one of the readers favorite couples.

For being such a short book (novella), this took me quite a while to finish. I’ve always liked Jared and Ten, but this was super couple focused. They were apart a lot of the book due to being rivals for the Olympics. I would have enjoyed this more if they could have stayed with each other and been an out and proud married couple.
Overall it wasn’t a bad read, and it had some cute moments along with more serious ones. The twist/conflict in the story want surprising at all to me. I totally expected it and would have been surprised if it didn’t happen. Maybe 3 out of 5 stars?
These books never get old. Ten and Jared from the first Harrisburg Railers story just sucked me in at the time, and I've read every follow up since. This one was full of old friends from past books, as well written and as entertaining. It was lovely to catch up with the original pair and to see them even more in love, and as hot together as they ever were. Colorado was there too, just being himself and showing what a wise soul he is, but still thankfully, as mad as a Hatter. Ten's fight for LGBTQ+ rights carries on. There's also some closure of the whole horrible Aarnie debacle for both Ten and Brian. Lots of loose ends were tied up, and I swooned at what a great guy Ryker is turning out to be. Great writing and fun to read.
OMG So, so good! Fans of RJ and VL hockey stories won't want to miss this one. Many fan favorites make appearances!!!
I am a huge fan of all of the hockey books written by the dynamic writing duo of RJ Scott and V.L. Locey and I LOVED this book. Not only is Rivals a new story for Jared and Ten but we also get to visit with several other characters from their various hockey series.
The 2022 Winter Olympics puts Jared and Ten in an unusual situation. Jared is one of the coaches for Canada, Ryker is playing for Canada and Ten is playing for the USA team. This creates certain challenges for Jared and Ten. Not only are they rooting for rival teams, they aren’t allowed to room with each other at the Olympics. Due to China’s opposition to LGBTQ couples, they have to be very careful to even spend any quality time together. Despite all of the challenges, they do manage to spend a bit of sexy time with each other.
The story was exciting and had me on tenterhooks much of the time as we went through the various game matchups leading to the final showdown. I really didn’t know how things would go until the final game was played and the winner was revealed.
Ryker had a moment with his dad that showed he is very grounded and wiser than you might think for his age. When Ten and Bryan have to confront a demon from their past, I loved the way the authors wrote this part of the story. It showed the kind of man that Ten is and I loved how he handled things. (Sorry for being cryptic but I don’t want to give too much away.)
I really can’t say enough good things about this book. You might think that after this many Railer books, and related hockey series, that the stories would be getting stale or repetitive. This isn’t even a little bit true; the authors continue to deliver quality stories and I hope they never stop.
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the authors.
I am not quite sure where to start. To say I absolutely loved this story, is an understatement! Being chosen to represent USA and Canada in the Olympics is a true honor for both Ten and Jared . Not to mention the rest of our boys. We get to visit with quite a few of the other men we have met through this series and those connected , and grew to love just as much. Ten and Jared's love and commitment to each other is, once again in full display and in no way can anyone doubt it. Great things happen in between the pages of this book. Mostly amazing, some sad. One VERY unexpected and unwelcome in particular...you will know the minute it's mentioned. Lots of sexy times, and lots of very funny things were said that made me laugh out loud ! I am also crossing my fingers about something mentioned possibly happening. I may have had a few good merchandise ideas, but not sure they'd fly. 😋😋 So, in conclusion let me just say this....this was an absolutely wonderful story. I went through many emotions reading it. Isn't that what a good book is all about?! I so look forward to the next book these authors give us.
I received An Advanced Readers Copy for my honest review and you have it!
So come on everyone, buy this and thoroughly enjoy the ride!!! 5/5 Gold Medals
I really enjoyed this book. It was so good to be back in the world of Ten, Jared and Ryker with some Stan and Colorado thrown in. Colorado surprised me with the insightful and thoughtful way he helped Ten through his difficult time in the Olympic village. Sharing a room with him Ten had to get used to his hippy dippy ways and the way Colorado likes to walk around with his junk out which brought out Jared’s jealous tendencies😂
This story was fast paced with a lot of content for a novella and if you love hockey then there is more hockey jargon in this as they were competing at the Beijing Winter Olympics. It was a difficult as well as proud time for Ten, Jared and Ryker with Ten and his husband finding themselves not working together but on opposing teams. Whilst Ten played for the USA Jared was the D-men coach for Canada with his son Ryker playing for Canada. To make matters even more difficult for them they were playing in a country that has laws against LGBTQ communities and fought to ignore their marriage and keep them apart in the village. Throw in the nightmare of finding Aarni Lankinen, the guy who tried to kill Ten, being picked to play for Finland and this book had it all.
ARC received from the authors for an honest review.
So what happens when husbands go to the Olympics on opposing teams. Who do you root for? Do you tell the others secrets to your team. Well we find out in the book by Rj and Vicki. This book has the same chemistry as all the other Railers books. It is another chapter in the lives of Ten and Jared with cameos of characters of other books. There's some closure and healing received. I really liked Penn and his groovy ways. Ryker is always a plus. Ten and Jared are better than ever and they were always great. The only thing I would say would make this better (IMO) is true justice for the bad character. He proved he has no redeeming qualities and he should've paid for his crimes. Highly recommend this book. Hope there's more to come in this series.
P.S. I was really upset that we didn't get a glimpse of Henry and Theo around the Olympic compound, until I realized they are in a different authors book.🤷♀️😂
Never have I needed a Ten and Jared fix more, and the authors delivered perfectly. Full of subplots (facing the past, national pride, what happens when your family becomes your rivals) and featuring enough of quirky Colorado to be satisfying, Rivals is a fast-paced, romantic, hockey-fest of the very best kind.
And even though the real NHL players aren’t playing in the 2022 Olympics, this Covid-free escape into our favourite fictional characters’ experiences in Beijing is sublime.
Let’s not forget the political / human rights issues at large because Tennant addresses those also.
With clandestine (sort of sanctioned) sexy times, some fabulous father-son moments between Jared and Ryker and a fabulous jam session, Scott and Locey deliver exactly what their readers need during these difficult times and the escape is perfect.
Tennant and Jared Madden-Rowe are going to the Olympics, one for team Canada and one for team USA!!! This book had so much in it, so many beloved players from all the books, Ryker, Stan, Colorado, so many more. I loved it! These ladies wrote with so much love of these two men, little Lottie ♥️ and the game of hockey, the absolute pride in the Olympics, about forgiveness and letting go. There was laughter, determination, close games, disappointment and victory!! And then there was Colorado, a bright light helping Ten and his head space, I loved that moment! My gosh this book was F A B U L O U S!! I literally could not put it down!!
If you love these series of Railers, Rebels, Owatonna, Raptors, you will definitely want to read this one!!! So many stars given!!!
The Railers are my favorite series. This is a fun take on the Olympics with husband against husband, Friend vs friend, StepDad vs StepSon.
Ten being team USA and Jared being a coach and Ryker a forward for Team Canada. Throw in Ten sharing a room with Colorado and you have a fun enjoyable read.
Unfortunately very little of Stan in the book, only when Team USA played the ROC. Too bad everyone can’t win Gold.
Seeing how Ten and Jared handled being on different teams and the added stress of Arni being on Team Finland made for a great story.
I LOVED the interaction between Colorado and Ten, was so not expecting them to be sharing a room or how they interacted.

Jared and Ten are not rivals are home but on the ice, they are, especially during the winter Olympics. They have to play opposites of each other and have to deal with different sleeping quarters and try to help their countries win a medal. The book is funny, sweet, romantic, and we get a chance to see all the guys from the previous books. Jared is so sweet and very attentive when it comes to Ten and they will do anything for each. I enjoyed this book and the series and I'm looking forward to the next book.
Awe, I loved this novella, so very good! I love Jared, Ten and Ryker and so proud they made it to the Olympics and got medals. I was laughing, crying( happy tears mostly) , smiling and peed off at a couple of parts and swooning. The love of family and friendship are so strong with the hockey teams, even playing as Rivals they were all strong, it made me so happy. It was a fun and beautiful book, even a tad sad, I really enjoyed it.
I don't know if I'll ever get enough of the Harrisburg Railers hockey team. I only wish there was more Stan. :)
Ten and Jared's Olympic story is another great addition to this series. I inly hope the authors can keep giving us these little glimpses into all of their lives!!
This one was such a delight! We have all our Railers favorite players, now all in different teams competing for their respective countries of birth. Added to that, the added tension from a separate subplot made it even harder to put down. I loved it so much!
Oh wow. This was an amazing story. I loved reading it and catching up with so many of my guys. This is such a great series. Each book leaves you wanting so much more. Everyone that loves reading M/M books needs to try this series out. Thank u for sharing your amazing work with us.
I always love meeting the guys from the Harrisburg Railers and this was no different. A sweet and action filled story (sports!) with all my favorite characters from the series. What more could I ask for? I translated the book so I got a free copy.
Heartwarming, Intense, and Perfectly on Point! love it
Our favorite hockey players head to China, well not really, but in a well imagined story, Ten, Jared, Stan, Tate, Ryker, Colorado, Bryan, and Vlad all end up heading to Bejing for the Winter 2022 Olympics.
Thanks to Covid, the NHL players and committee ended up pulling out of this year’s Olympics but in Rivals, all the teams went forward!
The authors mention that the hosting nation is not a one where LBGTQIA+ rights are recognized or welcome . That heavy burden is then worked into the stresses the characters here endure among the obvious ones of Olympic level play, world wide telecast, and the even more… playing against family and teammates who are close friends.
It’s all done realistically and without making any political platform within the story. Honestly so many could have, but they avoided it by using beloved characters as examples of what happens under such conditions, and their ability to go forward with love.
It was great having Colorado use his unique perspective to guide Ten through some worrying moments when Jared, as a Canadian teammate couldn’t help.
It also made me aware, as someone who loves her Caps which is made up of nationalities, how it must feel during international competition to face players who are normally your teammates. And friends.
The hockey was intense and exciting, as I expect from both authors. So amazing. The emotional impact high and lasting. What an incredible group of characters these men are that they remain such long standing favorites! Of mine included.
The ending was lovely and extremely satisfying. But I’m always hoping for more of these couples and series. They are just too wonderful for us to ever say a lasting goodbye.
I’m highly recommending Rivals. Read it and enjoy!
