The witch who can talk to animals meets the witch with a talking cat. What could go wrong? It’s Valentine’s Day in Winterspell, but not everyone appears to be feeling the love. And no, I’m not talking about my date-less self.
Instead of being wooed by candlelight, I’m working in a candle shop. Cora Hearth, Winterspell’s magical chandler, has teamed up with Sugar Shack to create party favors for the lucky couples, and they’re counting on us to spark some magic for their special night.
So, when a thief breaks into my delivery van and swipes the goodies, Cora and I—and her persnickety talking cat—have to join forces to track down the culprit in time to save Valentine’s Day.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Sugar Cookies and Sirens delivered another exciting installment in the Sugar Shack Witch mystery series. This time around the mystery surrounds the theft of valentine's gift bags.
This novella gave fans a crossover with another of the author's series, Nine Lives Magic Mysteries. Now the Sugar Shack series is the only thing I have read for Garrett. So, it was interesting to receive a peak into another series of hers. A peak which left me wanting more.
I enjoyed meeting the characters from the Nine Lives Magic Mysteries, Cora and her familiar, Selene. Of course Selene stole the show with snark and feisty comebacks.
Cora and Rosella worked well together in solving the mystery. Honestly, I never expected the outcome, which was funny depending how one looks at it. Overall, Cookies and Siren was a fast paced and light read.
2.5 stars (Audible). The in-between stories are great for background info on characters + personalities, but really dont have a lot of substance. Still, entertaining!
This was such a fun and cute story! The ending was actually so much more adorable than I expected 😆 Such a lovely little cozy read! And as always, wonderful narration!
I don’t know how I didn’t realize until very recently that the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries and the Nine Lives Magic series are both set in magical Winterspell! Well, author Danielle Garrett brings the heroines of both series together in Sugar Cookies and Sirens. Sugar Shack Ella meets Nine Lives Cora, and together they work on Valentine gift bags for some community events. However, the bags are stolen out of the back of Ella’s delivery van!
Although the book brings together two heroines, the story is shared solely from Rosella’s POV, therefore this is classified as a Sugar Shack Witch Mystery. The story is pretty straightforward, with the pair trying to figure out what happened to the gift bags. The story moves quickly, as they have a 24 hour deadline to retrieve the gifts in order to fulfill the orders. The mystery isn’t too complex and those unfamiliar with the series could easily enjoy it. I really enjoyed seeing Cora and Ella together. They hit it off right away and are already becoming fast friends.
Narration: The story is shared in the first person POV of heroine Ella. Those familiar with Ms. Ronconi’s work will recognize her upbeat cadence. She’s got a friendly, girl-next-door quality that suits Ella. She keeps the story moving with a steady flow. She alters her voice for dialogue, making it obvious different characters are speaking, but not always enough to be distinct. Her male characters are generally deeper, but not overly different from each other. She has fun with the voice of Cora’s cat, Selene, making it just a bit condescending.
In the end, Sugar Cookies and Sirens is a quick and fun novella. The story stays outside of both series’ ongoing storylines, making it easy to follow. I look forward to future Winterspell pairings.
My Ratings: Story: B Narration: B+

This was a cute novella set at Valentne's Day. Ella is more settled in town, and is still working part-time at the Sugar Shack and part-time for the local paper. The Sugar Shack has gone in with a local magical candleshop to make gift bags for the holiday, and Ella is tasked with helping pack them up at the candleshop. However, plans are thrown awry when all of the gift bags are stolen from the delivery truck.
We meet a new witch in this entry, the owner of the candleshop, along with her talking cat. Yes, the cat talks to everyone out loud, not just to Ella in her mind. I suspected pretty quickly who the thief was, but it was fun seeing how this played out, as well as the reasons for the theft.
Wowza! This was a great book! This was a prequel to the previous book. but this is a grimoire so it's a tad short. Even though it is a tad short butttt it was nice and it was fun and exciting. This book takes place during the Valentine season.
Ella meets Cora and together they are selling their cookies and candles together in gift bundles. However, when they step out for a cup a coffee the gift bags are stolen from the van. Now they got to work together to solve the mystery while also trying to recoup their losses.
It was really a good read. I definitely recommend it. It was nice. I wish I had read this before the other book to keep it in order.
Finally, Cora and Rosella meet each other! Their two businesses are working together to make Valentine's day gift baskets. But the baskets get stolen out of the back of the van and they have to scramble to get new baskets done. When they find the culprit, it's a little mind blowing.
Loved seeing these two together. It was so funny to see them finally interact!!
Such a cute witchy novela from the sugar shack mysteries world with new characters including a familiar fisty cat named selene I really enjoyed this I'm really enjoying the whole series really cosy and magical with a mystery aswell what isn't there to like
This was a cute story in the Sugar Shack Witch mystery series. I think that every other book in the series is a novella, which is fine but I do enjoy reading about Ella and the whole Midnight family. I'd also like more about Ella's boyfriend Orion.
I look forward to more books in the series- I'm thankful for Kindle Unlimited.
Sugar Cookies and Sirens Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries #2.5, by Danielle Garrett
In a Nutshell: It’s Valentine’s Day in Winterspell, and Rosella’s Family bakery, the Sugar Shack, has partnered with local candle maker Cora Hearth (from the author’s Nine Lives Magic series) to create magical gift bags for the town’s romantic celebrations. When a thief breaks into Rosella’s van and pinches the entire batch, Rosella and Cora — along with Cora’s wonderfully rude, persnickety talking cat — must team up to track down the culprit and save the evening.
Story Vibes: 🪄 Valentine’s magic 💫 Cora Hearth crossover 🪄 A van full of stolen goodies 💫 A sarcastic talking cat 🪄 Cozy collaboration and friendship 💫 Light-hearted magical sleuthing
The Plot: A simple Valentine’s partnership turns into chaos when Rosella’s carefully prepared magical gift bags vanish from her van. With Winterspell counting on her for their romantic evening treats, she joins forces with Cora Hearth — and Cora’s gloriously cantankerous familiar — to hunt down the thief. The mystery is small in scale, but the journey is lively.
The Protagonist: Rosella continues to blossom. Her confidence in her abilities and her place in the magical community grows steadily, and her natural curiosity and sense of fairness make her a strong, likeable sleuth. Cora is a delightful addition — level-headed, capable, and the perfect foil to her cat’s sharp tongue. Their dynamic gives the story warmth and humour, especially for readers who already know Cora from A Nine Lives Magic Mystery.
Themes & Style: Danielle Garrett’s signature fast-paced, witty style shines here. The prose is clean and engaging, making this a quick, enjoyable read. The novella format means the mystery is lighter, with fewer suspects and less complex layering than the full-length novels; the culprit feels less developed, but that suits the brisk, holiday-themed structure. The focus is on collaboration, confidence, and a sprinkle of magical fun.
My Thoughts: A charming Valentine’s adventure — warm, funny, and satisfying. Rosella and Cora make an excellent team, and the cameo from Cora’s rude talking cat adds a wonderful bite of humour. While the mystery is naturally lighter than the main books, it’s an enjoyable interlude that enriches the wider Winterspell world. A perfect quick read between the larger instalments.

This one was a sweet, cozy little escape—with a sprinkle of magic, a dash of mystery, and just enough charm to keep me turning the pages. The plot followed Holly, a witchy baker caught up in another supernatural misadventure, this time involving a siren, some suspicious behavior around town, and of course, a tray or two of sugar cookies.
It didn’t take long to fall back into the familiar rhythm of this quirky magical town, with its blend of seasonal cheer and otherworldly drama. The setting felt like one of those Hallmark towns that just happens to have witches, vampires, and other magical beings casually living among the humans. It’s whimsical, a little ridiculous in the best way, and perfect if you’re craving something low-stakes but still engaging.
The mystery itself was fun—nothing groundbreaking, but it had a few twists I didn’t see coming. I wouldn’t call it edge-of-your-seat suspense, but there was enough tension and curious little details to keep things moving. The siren subplot added a nice bit of freshness to the series without feeling like too much of a departure.
As always, the characters were the highlight. Holly is endearing and easy to root for, even if she sometimes second-guesses herself a bit too much. Her relationships—with Nick, with her friends, and with the various magical folks around town—continue to grow in ways that feel comforting and familiar. There’s a nice balance between the mystery and the interpersonal stuff, and I appreciated how even the side characters got their little moments to shine.
The writing stayed light and snappy, which worked well for the tone of the story. There’s a good amount of humor, some magical mishaps, and of course, plenty of food descriptions that made me want to raid my kitchen more than once. That said, some parts felt a little repetitive, and the mystery could’ve been a bit tighter—it meandered a bit before really kicking into gear.
It wasn’t my favorite in the series, but it still delivered on the cozy mystery promise: charming, lighthearted, and just magical enough to make reality feel a little less ordinary for a few hours. A solid addition to the series, especially if you’re in the mood for something sweet—literally and figuratively.
Rosella Midnight's family's bakery is super busy - it's Valentine's Day in Winterspell! She's been volun-TOLD to deliver a batch to Cora Hearth, Winterspell’s magical chandler who has teamed up with the Sugar Shack, and help her assemble cookies and candles party favors for lucky couples! The cookies in the favors are so cute, they tell a curious visiting child she can have one, and just before she can take a bite, MOM lays down the law and says no!!
Welp, I can relate (both as a parent and a child) since sugar IS addictive, unhealthy AND may cause the child to become hyper, but still, one cookie wouldn't hurt right? Just as Rosella is about to deliver the party favors, she discovers a thief has broken into her delivery van and swiped all the party favor bags, cookies and candles! Now Cora, Rosella and her cat familiar, Selene must join forces to find and catch the culprit to save Valentine's Day.
This is probably my favorite installment of the Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries so far! Why? Because of Selene, the grumpy, "immortal" talking cat. That's right. THE CAT! Audiobook narrator Amanda Ronconi did such a great job bringing that cat to life, she pretty much stole the show Book, every time she was present. Haughty, angry, witty, sarcastic, I just couldn't help smiling at every single thing she said and did, even laughing and chuckling at some points.
If you're a cat person like me, it's impossible NOT to want Selene. She's sassy, sarcastic, smart and just so sexy. Sure there were cookies and that mystery and Rosella trying to make a new friend with a witch who has a cat familiar that both of them can hear. But that cat ... oh my, how can one resist? I admit it. I love this story because the cat's voice acting and mannerisms were just how I'd imagine my own kitty might talk, sometimes. I can't help it. I want to be the cat's butler. There, I said it.
I'm loving this series so much. It's such a fun town and world.
It is Valentine's day at the Sugar Shake and Winterspell. Love is in the air and our girl is...alone. Her boyfriend is off on a mission and probably won't make it home in time to celebrate. It's okay...she has her work. Sugar Shake and Cora Hearth have teamed up to create party favors for couples. However, things go sideways when a thief breaks into the delivery van and swipes the goodies. It will be up to Ella, Cora, and Cora's cat familiar to find the thief to save Valentine's Day!
This was a cute little number. So much fun. Again....I'm really loving this world the author created. There is another series set in this same town that I need to dive into eventually. Such a vibe and I'm here for it!!!
The mystery was entertaining. At some point it dawned on me and I figured it out. It was a bit on the nose. I won't spoil which moment made the light bulb go off for me. It was a little easy, but still fun to watch unravel. And do I dare say........ it was kinda cute?
I missed Ella's beau but I was excited to see Ella maybe make a new friend. I hope Cora shows up in the future! She and her cat familiar were a gem and so much fun. Honestly, there seems to be some more backstory with these two. Curious to learn more. The name does sound familiar. Maybe Cora was in that Xmas short I read a while back? Who knows lol.
The narrator is one of my favorites ever. Love, love, LOVE her voices. Always fun, always a blast.
In the end, this was short but very sweet and nice. 4 stars. The mystery was a little on the nose, but I still enjoyed it immensely.
- Favorite Character(s): Ella and Cora - Least Favorite Character(s): mmmmmmmm no one I guess
I actually LOVED THIS!!!! I enjoyed this quick read! HEAVY SPOILERS BELOW!!!!! This is a CLEAN BOOK📚 • • • • • • • With a character named after me(Candace 😂) and a smart pants cat(which I love cats)and making a friend to deliver cookies and candles with is just amazing. So as they’re loading the truck, they see an adorable little girl and they go to give her a cookie, but her mom says no and is very persistent in her no so she gives the cookie back and they feel bad because neither one of them have kids so they’re not quite sure why the mom says no, understandable. So they finish loading the truck only later to find out they’ve been robbed of all their amazing cookies and candles. They begin to freak out because of the amount of orders that were in their truck. They ask around if anyone saw people or person and they’ve been told that they saw a woman with a stroller, a gentleman carrying boxes in a jumpsuit. And start to realize that there may be more than one robber. They reach out to the police, and when they catch their first assailant, they go and see her in a cell and realize that she’s basically foaming at the mouth saying that she needs to take the cookies to her in the treehouse. So they continue to go and do their detective work these two newfound friends of candles and cookies they find the man in the jumpsuits and he tells them that he had no idea what was going on when he was taking the items, and the only thing that snapped him out was being yelled at because of the erratic driving that caused him to almost get into a crash and he lost the items in the back of the truck and they were basically smashed by another driver. He tells them they can go and see the items and how they were destroyed by the other driver who ran them over all while being talked to by this familiar cat who belongs to one of the girls. In the end, we are led to a house. The cat goes through the fence and into the backyard where she finds ribbons and wrapping and cookies and candles everywhere that lead into a treehouse then the girls go into the backyard and are confronted by a man and out Pops a little girl who says don’t let them take my cookies and that’s when we find out that this little girl is a siren. And she is also the same little girl whose mom said for her to give back the cookie so she told people or wished it rather in her mind for people to bring her the cookies.
I don’t know about you, but I loved this quick read, and I found it thoroughly enjoyable.

Having enjoyed earlier Sugar Shack Witch and Nine Lives Magic Mysteries, I was tickled that this Valentine novella brought a crossover mystery for Rosella, Cora, and Selene to tackle.
The Sugar Shack and Wicked Wicks are combining products for Valentine gift bag orders for three of Winterspells' businesses hosting Valentine functions. Just when they are ready for delivery, disaster happens in the form of a daring daylight theft. Every gift bag is gone and the hours are ticking down to delivery. Neither business can afford the bad rep of not coming through on their orders and the police are doing the bare minimum it seems. Rosella, Cora and Selene are forced to do their own investigation and their detecting work produces a surprising solution even as Rosella misses the enigmatic Orion and wishes she had her own Valentine's Day surprise.
It was fast, light, and a sweet one. I had it figured out, but it was still fun to see the gals and Selene on the case, see more of Cora and Selene's sarcasm and banter from Rosella's POV and see one of Rosella's animal friends help with the case. Looking forward to more from both series and hope for a few more crossover moments in future.
Valentines day is a busy day for the Sugar Shack and joining forces with Winterspell's incredible magic Chandler Cora seems like a no brainer. But when the goodies are stolen, Ella, Cora and Cora's familiar must find the thief before the day of love turns into the day of disaster. ✨️ Short and sweet Valentines day read ✨️ Low stakes cozy witchy mystery ✨️ A witch who talks to creatures and they talk back joins forces with witch woman with a persnickety cat familiar ✨️ Crossover between Sugar Shack Witch Mysteries and Nine Lives magic Mysteries I am so in love with this series. I love all the characters and the low stakes cozy Mysteries are so interesting and keep me engaged! I still prefer full books but I think it shows a lot of creativity to be able to weave a story with so few pages and still make it feel like a full story has been told. I also loved meeting Cora and Selene and it's made me want to read their series too! I can't wait to continue this story and hope to see another crossover in the future!

💕 Positives: * The mystery was interesting. No murder, but creative in the set up.
* Loved how Rosella teamed up with Cora and Selene. It's so neat to see characters from a different series, in this series.
* Sirens exist and they are a bit terrifying when one thinks about it.

🌟 Overall, I loved this novella. The pacing was perfect and I enjoyed the mystery. Cozy mysteries without murders are beyond creative. It's easy to unalive a character, but to craft a mystery without that takes a higher level of creativity.
Loved seeing Rosella with Selene and Cora. It's neat to see two series cross over, especially as I'm currently waiting for the next book in the Selene/9 Lives series to come out. The ending was perfect as well. Definitely starting the next book tonight.
