A Christmas in Connecticut

Rate this book
A city girl finds more than she’s looking for when she spends Christmas in a small town in Connecticut.

Claire Bennett is facing her first Christmas alone since her parents died in a car accident. She hates the idea of spending Christmas in Los Angeles and being reminded at every turn that they’re gone. Inspired by her and her mom’s favorite holiday movie, “Christmas in Connecticut,” she rents a charming cottage in the small town of River Falls. She dreams of being able to insulate herself in scarves and hot chocolate while working on her popular lifestyle blog.

Once there, she meets the handsome Jack Wilson who has recently returned to River Falls after serving in Afghanistan. The attraction between them is off the charts. Jack convinces Claire to help him create a magical Christmas for his family.

The only problem?

Claire is only the face behind “City Meets Country,” her best friend Emmy is the real creative genius behind their blog. Claire can barely boil water, let alone make a buche de noel. But she lets her heart lead the way and will do anything to be near Jack. And everything that could go wrong does, except for the chemistry between them.

A funny and steamy holiday romance.

A Christmas in Connecticut is a super cute, fun, and fast romance for a winter night! I read this in a couple of hours, and enjoyed every second of it. While the premise of the book wasn't unique, the cast of characters was absolutely adorable and left you wishing that you had friends and neighbors just like them.

Claire wants to avoid Christmas in LA this year, so she rents a cottage for a month in Connecticut, ready to move on from her tragic year and find a new way forward. She can do her work from anywhere, so she sets off for the idyllic cottage in Connecticut.

Jack is also trying to get over a huge loss, but he's just returned to River Falls and is suddenly faced with trying to save his father's business. He doesn't expect the woman from his sister's favorite blog to show up in his store and bring destruction with her.

What ensues from there is comedic, sweet, wonderfully holidayriffic, and reminds us all that family can be who we are with even if we don't share blood. If you are looking for a quick read for a cold and snowy December night, don't pass by A Christmas in Connecticut.

•• ¿De qué va la historia? ••

Was so hopeful from the cute cover, to the interesting story description and of course originally BEING from CT... the setting.

The writing to me just seemed off. The characters weren't really developed. It seemed like Jack's only line over and over was relating to the hardware stores finances. I found everything Jack and his sister to do completely annoying. Also, lets me real Jack is a stalker. I get it small town vibes, just shows up. But your sister tells you she likes this woman's blog, you meet said woman and all of a sudden you have her blog post from random April day four years prior memorized? Yeah, no.

Claire was also incredibly annoying. I did not like how she was written at all. I didn't feel a connection to really anyone in this book.

Zero spice and the "sexual tension" the write tried to create just wasn't there. Again, probably because I viewed Jack as more of a stalker than a love interest. I also caught a few rough sentences that I had to read over and over. I am TERRIBLE when it comes to grammar and spelling, so I feel like if I'm noticing non-edited sentences its a problem.

Was close to one staring it but because its short and a quick read felt it was okay to add a second. It also made me a little homesick. Although I will honestly say, I don't remember many white Christmases in CT, we rarely got snow on the holiday.

Adorable and Christmassy!

Christmas In Connecticut was an absolute delight! Cosy, heartwarming and steamy at just the right moments! I felt all the frustration when that dog went into labour! 😉 The characters are instantly likeable and I loved the themes.
I am a fan of Emily’s work anyway, but this just added to my appreciation of her. A perfect Christmas read 🥰🥰

A wintery winner of a read recommended to me by @nicolaloweauthor.

Cute, heartwarming, with a sprinkling of humour made for such a fun small town romance. The romance predictable, but didn't detract from the story. The two main characters were adorable & I wish the book had been longer so we could see what happened next.

This was an adorable story that had such a rich world, I loved the writing and just thought it was really nice to fall into and spend a bit of time reading!

I had thought it was going to go a different way but Jack was just so wholesome, this book really was just about finding your soulmate and being accepted for who you are!

It had some steam but I think the strengths lay elsewhere, it was just a really heartwarming Christmassy love story.

Decided to kick off my Christmas season by reading this novella that popped up in my recommendations on kindle.

It’s like a mildly steamy Hallmark Christmas movie. Real vanilla and lacking any real character. Nothing horrible about it but also nothing too exciting or funny either.

I have to say that Jack and especially his sister (Beth) were kind of out of line with expecting Claire to take on so much. I know it was used as a plot device in order to show Claire’s incompetence in homemaking skills but it made Beth seem unlikable and very pushy. Especially forcing her to help birth the neighbors puppies. So weird.

I love the movie this is story based on. Christmas in Connecticut is one of my favorite Christmas movies; it’s a true comedy and Barbara Stanwyck is beautiful and funny and full of charisma in it. I didn’t get any of that from this book but for anyone who likes Christmas themed romances (particularly the Hallmark variety), it’s serviceable.

If you are looking for a sweet, small town New England Christmas love story with some steam, then this, my friend, is for you!

This story gave me all the Christmas feels! I really enjoyed Claire and Jack falling in love. Claire, the California city girl, in need of a little getaway from her everyday life and sadness of her parent’s passing, ends up in River Falls meeting Jack. I don’t know if I’d say it’s love at first sight, but it definitely seems like they connect right away and it’s just adorable. Claire and Jack have a shared bond since they’ve both had parents that have passed and its sweet to see them help each other to heal in a small way that understanding brings.

I finished this book feeling happy and wanting to re-decorate my Christmas tree. 🤣
Thank you so much @emilyfrenchbooks for giving me the opportunity to read this!!

Some of my favorite things:
1. Well, Jack obviously, he is just too sweet for words!
2. Claire not having any idea what she’s doing, it’s fairly comical in spots, you kind of want to hug her!
3. Archie!! I’ll just leave it at that 🤣

Ok, so I'm really confident this was self-published, and I don't want to be super critical of an author hustling to get her work out. This story was believable. Charming. But I really, really wanted a better editor and better copy editing. An editor would've helped strengthen the story and decide to make this a steamy romance or not -- as it is, its straddling the steamy/sweet line in a way that leaves out all the good stuff on either side of the line. The excessive commas in weird places took me out of the story far too often. And let's face it - it's short. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I support Emily French's efforts, but I won't be rushing to pick up more of her work. (And I'm sorry for that. Feeling guilty over here. 😭)

Super cute fun read! I absolutely love small town romance, add in some Christmas and it’s got to be amazing. Claire lives in LA, but needs to get away for the holidays. She finds the perfect house to rent in Connecticut.
Jack is trying to run his fathers store, and make Christmas perfect for his sister. When he meets Claire they have an insta-attraction.
This story is comical, heart warming, and so amazing. Jack and Claire are just what each other needs to make it through the holidays.

A handsome man in plaid & a mischevious pooch - what's not to love! Emily French has written such a fun, romantic story. I love the blog posts interspersed in the story, and the author's sense of humor. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a feel-good story about best friends and finding love in unexpected places.

I would’ve given this five stars but…. My personal pet peeve ( ok I do have a few. But this one is a big one ). Is when authors write about food without knowing about food. For example: why would one purée mashed potatoes? They’re either whipped or mashed. Puréed would be suitable for a baby. Puréed celery root, yes. Potatoes, no. It’s just not done. There were other food faux pas but I’ll let that pass in the interest of being to the point. One of the other star steelers is in the last chapter of the book, when Emmy takes over the blog and writes about the wedding. It sounds like a high schooler wrote it. I get that she’s trying to sound hip and all that but it’s not working.
The story was nice, Christmasy, ( which is why I chose it).

There was no need to use the words 'sexy' and 'hot' these many times. And I wouldn't touch someone I had just met across a table like Claire did, but that's me.
The plot is okay, but it looked as if a lot of time had gone by, but also not? They became very domestic too quickly, and the characters lacked development.

A Christmas classic with a modern twist.
What's your favorite classic Christmas movies? One of my favorites is Christmas in Connecticut, the 1945 film. I recently read A Christmas in Connecticut by @emilyfrenchbooks and I loved the modern twist on an old classic! If you are looking for a sweet and festive rom-com with a little bit of spice, pick this one up. I read it afternoon and couldn't put it down. The antics and misfortunes of Claire Bennett had me laughing out loud and I loved the sweet and rugged Jack Wilson. This book will put you right in the holiday spirit. And if you're a KU member, it's included in your membership. Definitely add this one to your Christmas TBR!! Thank you Emily French for the gifted copy.

What a cute and funny Christmas romance!! So many hilarious hijinks as Claire tries to live up to her online persona. It’s L.A. blogger meets small town, East Coast, hardware store owner adorableness! 🎄❤️🥰 This book was a great way to start off my Christmas season!

Initially I gave a 3 ⭐️ but now after writing a review I realised its more of a 2.8 ⭐️🥲

Promised a holiday escape full of Christmas magic, but alas, it left me hanging a couple of notches below my festive expectations. While I hoped to be whisked away by the holiday cheer, the relationship between Jack and Claire felt like it missed the mark. The writing seemed oddly paced and out of character, rushing through scenes in a way that left me feeling slightly disconnected.

However, amid the chaotic storytelling, there was a scene that brought a warm feeling – the hilarious yet heartwarming dog giving birth moment. It provided a sweet break from the disjointed narrative.

Truth be told, as a reader, I struggled to connect with any of the characters in this tale. Neither Jack and Claire nor the supporting cast felt truly tangible, leaving me searching for that emotional bond that makes a story memorable. Despite the hiccups, I found a glimmer of warmth in the dog's story, but alas, the overall charm I had hoped for fell short. Here's to hoping the next holiday read brings that much-needed Christmas magic to life!

This book was very “meh” as far as holiday romances go. I was a bit underwhelmed. And as a lover of the movie it’s based on, that was a bit disappointing. The story might have worked better if the writing had been just a bit crisper, with less passive voice and more showing instead of telling. And I expected a bit more smut from a novella. Oh well, onto the next one.

This was such a cute read. I am from Connecticut but currently live in San Diego so this was very relatable for me. I loved the slightly spicy scenes!! I wasn’t expecting those. But I really loved the relationship building between Claire & Jack. This was a very cute book. I would definitely recommend it.
