உடம்பு சரியில்லாம ஸ்கூல்ல இருந்து வரும் தமிழரசனை அப்பா& அம்மா ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கூட்டிட்டு போய் காட்டுனாங்க. டாக்டர் ரெண்டு கிட்னியும் வேல செய்யல இங்க பாக்க முடியாது நீங்க பெரிய ஆஸ்பத்திரி கொண்டு போங்கனு சொல்லிட்டாங்க. எம்.எம்.சி ஆஸ்பத்திரில அட்மிட் பண்ணி வைத்தியம் பாத்து பையன காப்பாத்திட்டாங்க. இனிமே அவன் உசுரோட இருக்க வர வாரம் ரெண்டு தடவ டயாலிசிஸ் பண்ணிக்கனும் இல்ல கிட்னிய டிரான்ஸ்பிளான்ட் பண்ணனும்னு சொல்லிட்டாங்க டாக்டருங்க. இதுதான் இப்போது உயிரோடிருக்கிறேன் நாவலோட மைய கதெ.

Imaiyam's இப்போது உயிரோடிருக்கிறேன் is an exploration of the trauma a boy undergoes after his kidneys fail. Thamizharasan is a normal school going boy studying 11th grade in a village in Tamilnadu. His father runs a rice mill, living with his mother and sister his life can be called as the usual. His life changes drastically as he falls sick, what follows is a journey that completely alters his life and his family. The sickness alters futures plans, wishes and relegates his life to a state of vegetation where being alive is the only thing that one can aspire.
Imaiyam's writing is plain, he documents the unjustness of the situation so coldly yet it is so affecting. In the early stages of the novel as reader you get shocked to see that how the family is being sent in endless trips to different hospitals, no one cares to explain to them the situation or the details about the disease. What follows in the early chapters is endless tests, visits to various hospitals, we with the family are exasperated how the family is being treated. This shows the extreme amount of social injustice an uneducated villager faces at a hospital. Mind you the family is not poor, the father pays all the money but in the eyes of the doctor they are not people worthy enough of explanation. Imagine if the family was not from rural background but from urban milieu and could speak English fluently the doctors and nurses would have explained the condition of the boy to them. One is left wondering why does the doctors and nurses take the effort to explain to the parents what is wrong with the boy. The parents find it difficult to follow the language used, terms like dialysis, fistula are alien to them.
The second aspect that Imaiyam shows is how information and procedures are being hidden to people from rural and uneducated background. The parents are made to go to a myriad different blocks, request to pay fees comes all the time. At every step new information is shared to them only at the last leaving the parents wondering why this was not told before. For example the lengthy judicial process involved in getting approval for a transplant is more tiring than the operation itself. There are innumerable tests done to see if the kidneys are matching, one could not wonder as the parents do why a dental checkup is needed for a kidney transplant.
The third incredible aspect of the novel how the disease affects the psychological state of the family. The mother complains to the father that it was due to his ill habits especially towards women visiting the rice mill that has caused his son to suffer. The father who in his entire life had not spoken few words caringly to his son, who has not bought a new dress to his son is drastically altered. It is incredible to the love of the father but do we really still need a disease to remind our fathers to be loving towards the son. There are multiple conflicts between the husband and wife which are inturn aggravated by the inhumanity of the medical system. Why cant our medical practitioners be more human towards the poor and the uneducated. They are the ones who need the support and help more than the others.
