The trail leads to Falkville Falls, where Liam clashes with Olivia Davis, whose maddening family seems inexplicably embroiled in this haunting mess. Olivia has always mothered her little sister, Pepper. But when the Hunter family opens her eyes to the hidden underworld of real monsters prowling the dark, she realizes she can’t protect Pepper from this newest threat by herself. This book should have been fun, but instead, it was just kind of... uncomfortable to read? Mostly because of Liam, who felt the need to inject sexual comments into any situation. I knew he was the love interest from the start, and so I kept waiting for him to be reformed--I wasn't really supposed to be a fan, right? But he never changed. He just made everything sexually charged for no reason, and I hated that. I know guys who do that, and I hate it in real life, too. So I didn't see the appeal in this love interest. The book might have been saved even with this problem had the plot been coherent, but in this world of vampires and werewolves and witches and ghosts, there was no consistent struggle. I get it--we want to see them all. But maybe not in Book 1. Or at least maybe don't have them all be integral to the plot. Focus on the ghost (perhaps the most compelling plotline in this book) would have made it better, but there was no focus. And that was unfortunate, too.

Overall, a disappointing read. My full review (including a few of the "pros" I had) will be available February 17, 2023 from Gateway Reviews.

Note: I was provided with an ARC by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions here are my own.

Hunterland is the first book in a new series by the same name.  It seems like it is supposed to be a lot like Supernatural, Grim or maybe even the new Nancy Drew.   Teenagers hunting supernatural things roll into town with their FBI (not really) father after a few suicides happen in a small town.  The thing is they aren't really suicides and something from the paranormal world is doing the killing, they just need to find out what.

Olivia is the daughter of the town sheriff and when we first meet her it is when she is looking at a teacher from her high school who has committed suicide and is hanging in the gym.  This is the third suicide of someone at the school and it is starting to seem like there might be something else behind all these deaths.  Liam and Jack have been part of Hunterland all of their lives and they are ready to jump into this new mystery. They roll into town with their father looking for who/what is committing these murders.  This school isn't the only one, there have been killings that look exactly the same in other small towns in the area.
description
The plot of this book was a little all over the place.  There is the main story happening with Ghosts, which really would have been enough to carry the story.  But then it got a little garbled with Vampires and Werewolves and some turmoil happening between them that involves the Hunter family.  Along with meeting one of the original Vampires, that didn't have anything to do with the suicide looking murders that were happening at the school.  It just felt a bit disjointed.  Like the author was trying to do this story and 100 pages of the next, all in one book.  There was also a bit of a plot hole in this that wasn't really addressed, unless I missed it, that was distracting for me.

The premise of the book is something that really drew my attention since these are the kinds of stories I completely love.  But the book ended up having a few too many YA issues I struggled with.  The relationships between just about everyone didn't make a ton of sense to me.  It was clear Liam and Olivia were going to be a thing, but I absolutely hated Liam for most of the book.  He was too smug, too harsh, too just trying to be the bad boy and over sexualizing everything.  The way he talked to Olivia the majority of the story was just off and why any girl would be drawn to him was beyond me.  Then there was Olivia's relationship to her sister that seemed more like a keeper than just being part of the family.

This book did have a lot happening the entire time and a good amount of action so I was entertained throughout enough not to get too caught up in the YA teen relationship drama happening.  I was enjoying at least the paranormal part of the story quite a bit and was interested in Olivia and Pepper's magical capabilities.   I was hoping to explore those a little more in this book but we only get to scratch the surface a bit.

I really wanted to love this story and maybe the next book will weed out a few of the issues we saw in this one.  I think the world is really interesting and I'd love to explore the other members of Hunterland along with the set up that was done in this book on the semi war between one of the packs of Werewolves and the Vampires.  So there might be some hope in the rest of the series.

Narration:
One of the reasons I picked this up to listen to was Travis Baldree is a narrator for it and I really enjoy him.  He did a fantastic job on his PoV and was able to capture all the voices well.  His sections I listened to at my normal 1.5x speed and his narration was exactly as good as I expected it to be.  Arielle DeLisle is a new to me narrator, even though she has a pretty extensive catalog.  I found her performance a bit slow with some strange pauses.  I had to up the speed I listened to her PoVs from my usual 1.5x to 1.75x for it not to be distracting.  Her diction and change of voices was great, just something with the timing didn't work quite right for me.

Oh this had me hooked from the first page!! It’s an amazing monster hunting story filled with action, the supernatural, and mystery- with a bit of a slow burn romance thrown in. Such a captivating read - I really want book 2 right now! If you liked The Luminaries you will LOVE this! I received an advanced copy of this from NetGalley all opinions are my own

I got major supernatural and teen wolf vibes from this book- there’s such a fun balance of fantasy and normal life. I could easily see this being a Netflix series. Honestly, I was sold as soon as I learned this was about vampire and ghost hunters - there’s also a few interesting twists to the premise that I won’t spoil 👀.

Parts of the story reminded me of vampire diaries- a bunch of high schoolers set out to rid the town of spirits and vampires while the rest of the town is totally unaware that supernatural beings exist.

The action scenes were great. The found family dynamic was cute, and I really enjoyed the little sister/hot vampire hunter bond.

Also- if you were a Charlie/Carlisle fan in the twilight series, you’ll love the dads in this book.

I had so much fun reading this. The book ends on a major cliffhanger- I will definitely be continuing this series to see what happens!

Thank you book of matches media for the advanced copy ♥️

I have honestly never laughed so hard at a character. The way that Liam constantly throws in sexual comments in literally ANY situation just seriously sends me.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book gave major modern-day teen wolf vibes, I'm hoping that it gets picked up for a series because honestly, everything about this book made me want to yell when I finished it and didn't have the second book to start.

Throughout the book, you are met with insane plot twists and some things that will literally have your jaw on the floor.

If you love Monster hunting and an amazing balance between every factor that is presented I highly recommend picking up this!

I absolutely loved how every single character melded together and made the story, this has been my honest favorite read so far this year!

What a fantastic read. Hunterland is the start to what I am sure will be a fantastic series. I am waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book, not so patiently. I need more. ASAP.

We are taken on an amazing adventure into the supernatural world with a unique spin on the storyline. You have the hot bad boy. Two spunky sisters and the FMC that you occasionally want to shake but if I didn’t feel that way about a FMC then the book doesn’t have me invested. Hunterland had me invested from start to finish.

Next one please!

This book was amazing!!!!
I loved it. It is full of adventure, mystery, love and totally worth the read

Spoilers Ahead!!!!!

I love the chemistry between Liv and Liam. The facts that he makes Pepper come out of her shell. His sister Jac is so sassy and adorable, brings a comical aspect to the book. I was kinda shocked when you find out that Pepper can talk to the dead and that liv is a healer and her other ability (honestly I forget, I read the the book like two weeks ago)
Anyway not going to get super into anything else but I love it. I would totally read it again.

I am a bit late posting this from the book tour- I accidentally had it down as being in March, not February! But I definitely wanted to share this. Thank-you so much for sending me an advance copy, it was a great change of pace in my reading.

The Hunter family comes to Falkville Falls to investigate the next school in a string of school nurse suicides- but this one is a little different than the others. When they meet the sheriff and his two daughters, they know something even stranger than they anticipated is going on. Olivia didn't think she and her sister Pepper had any ties with the world of monsters the Hunter family deal with. But she is wrong.

This was such a cute young adult paranormal book. I can yell it's the start of a series and it got me interested in what will happen next. The Hunter family trio was gun-slinging and badass. And Pepper in particular stood out in the Davis family.

I found Olivia to be a bit flat and whiny. Liam was also a bit too much. The beginning scene where he shoots up her room and doesn't think he needs to explain why (He didn't even give some fake reason, anything!) definitely had my eyebrows raised. But they were extreme opposites which made the romance chemistry spark, although I think both their sisters were the more interesting characters.

I liked the idea of a family of monster hunters- a younger Supernatural vibe was going on which was so fun! (With a brother, sister and father instead of two brothers though). Sheriff Davis struck me as an interesting side character- like Caroline's mom in Vampire Diaries once she teamed up with Damon.

Being able to compare this book with other fiction made the reading nostalgic, although it was it's own unique story, not repetitive. I read a few adult witchy adventure romances thus year, and this was something right along those vibes, just young adult. Fast, easy to read and fun.

Omg, I literally gave this book a hug when I finished I loved it so much. Like any good millennial girl I loved me some CW teen shows growing up and Hunterland gave me all the Supernatural vibes (and even a bit of vampire diaries) and I am here for it. This is probably why I pictured Agent Hunter and Jeffery Dean Morgan but I’m not mad about it 😍 Agent Hunter and his two kids 19 yr old Liam, irreverent badass, and 14 yr old Jacqueline, super smart and mature badass, are hunters who travel killing all sorts of things that go bump in the night. Olivia, Pepper and sheriff Davis live in a town plagued by something that keeps killing school nurses. The Hunters open the Davis’s worldview a whole lot and together they work to stop these deaths.

Liam is so loveable, but I’m a sucker for a playful bad boy with a good heart. It’s so much fun to watch Olivia grow as her world is kinda shattered and made new. Jac is like a feisty kick butt Velma, and pepper is loveable but way too good at keeping secrets. I’m a little worried for her future in the series, she def thinks she’s more mature and knowledgeable than her 14 yr old self really is 😅. The plot is fun, I saw some of the twists and turns coming but it didn’t take away any joy in reading and it’s my favorite kind of cliffhanger: one where we get a resolution to the episodic story but a reveal to keep us waiting for the next one. Because I’m ready to read it ASAP!

What a great kick off to a series!
I adored Supernatural when it aired, so to find a book that had hunter vibes? *chef's kiss*
Olivia and Pepper handled themselves SO well given what they get thrown at them, and I am beyond excited to see where this series goes. If you like thinga that go bump in the night, this is a series to watch for, for sure.

A series of questionable suicides makes Liam Hunter and his family go to Falkville Falls in Wisconsin. The Hunter's have hunted paranormal monsters for a long time and is part of an organisation called Hunterland. Sheriff Davis and his daughters Olivia and Pepper have no clue about the paranormal world, but they soon get enlightened when it's clear that their family somehow is connected to it. Can the two families work together to find out who's behind the events before there's another "suicide"?

A good start to a new urban fantasy series for young adults! I can imagine that fans of the TV series "Supernaturals" will enjoy this, as the Hunter's chase vampires, werewolves, ghosts and other paranormal enteties. In the Hunter family we get Liam's point of view and in the Davis family it's Olivia's (with a few chapters from Pepper's POV).

In the beginning I was a bit bothered by Liam's mocking attitude and Olivia's overprotectiveness towards her younger sister Pepper. She also gets very triggered by Liam's teasing. Of course they go from quarreling with each other to other strong feelings, and to me personally it's a bit fast (I'm no fan of insta love), but then I'm not the main target group for this series.

Even though I think most of the story progresses as I expect, there is a couple of surprises along the way. The ending is interesting and I'm looking forward to reading the next book!

I listened to this one via audiobook received from NetGalley and overall it was definitely a pleasant surprise.

It had all the important ingredients of a first book in a new YA fantasy/paranormal series and definitely had an added mystery element that kept me interested and did surprise me with some of the reveals. This book felt like YA Supernatural and it worked for me. I feel like I would have LOVED this one if I read it when I was a little younger but all the same it was a solid read. The next book in the series is set up to allow us to learn more about this world and I look forward to continuing this series.

I do feel like the audio itself, in particular the female narrator made the character sound a little younger then her actual age, however, I still found myself looking for excuses to listen.

Thank you Netgalley for the audio version of Hunterland.

This gave me YA Supernatural and TVD vibes and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It gave me a very nostalgic feeling which was nice and provided great action and was fast-paced. I adored the protective nature of Liam and the wisdom from Jac. I actually really enjoyed all the characters as individuals. However, I did not always get behind the relationship between Liam and Olivia. I felt that he had a better relationship with Pepper, but her being younger, he resorted to fawning over the older sister. Maybe I missed something, but I just didn't get the chemistry between Liam and Olivia and don't feel like they are in any place for a lasting relationship going forward in the series. Overall, I enjoyed it and am interested in seeing where it goes.

Hunterland by Dana Claire narrated by Arielle DeLisle and Travis Baldree. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ YA, paranormal romance, monster hunters. Cliffhanger. Multiple POV.
This was well written, the narration was fantastic and for YA fans this is a perfect audiobook/ story. It's full of teenage angst, young love, hormones and family issues. With the bonus of all the paranormal monsters your heart could desire. One thing I really liked was the typical vampires, werewolves and ghosts were not typical. Dana Claire has a different twist on the paranormal bad guys. That was actually great.
So, in reality, I am not the biggest YA fan. This story wasn't my personal cup of tea. But a talented author is what matters more than anything. Dana Claire is a talented author.
I'd like to thank NetGalley and CamCat for this audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I was hooked from the very first paragraph. This paranormal YA story has ghosts, vampires, werewolves, a found family, and a little slow-burn romance.

Liam Hunter, his sister Jac, and their father fight beasts and all supernatural forces. School nurses are mysteriously dying. When another teacher is found hanging at the Falkville Falls High connected to the dying nurses, the Hunter family rolls into town. The Hunter family team up with Sheriff Davis to solve the mysteries. It is soon discovered that Sheriff Davis and his two daughters, Olivia and Pepper are connected. From the minute Olivia sees bad boy Liam he sets off all her triggers and the two clash. Soon both families are thrown together in close quarters and working together.

There was so much to enjoy about this book. You have a stubborn sassy heroine in Olivia, a bad boy playboy in Liam, and two spunky little sisters creating a fun found family dynamic…adding in their dads and some close friends. Throw in monsters and beasts and I'm feeling all my favorite teen supernatural tv and book series combined.

I am a huge fan of enemies-to-lovers and Olivia and Liam bring the snarky fun I love about this trope. These two have chemistry but clash in all the best ways. Olivia is full of fight and strong-willed and Liam is protective and bossy. Their romance takes a backseat to the adventure and found family elements of this new supernatural series, but it's there simmering.

There are twists and surprises throughout the book. I am hooked and can’t wait for more.

This is a great introduction to what’s going to be a fun and adventurous new series. The beginning started with a bang. It slowed down a bit in the middle for me, but it soon picked up speed again. The book does a good job introducing characters and building the Hunterland world of supernatural beasts. It does end on a cliffhanger.

I’m ready for the next book!

Thank you to NetGalley for the privilege of allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Publication date was Feb. 6, 2023

This is the first book in the Hunterland Series. If you liked Supernatural, Vampire Diaries and/or Twilight. This book gives major vibes with those themes. As a huge Supernatural fan, I was drawn to this book. It was quirky and a fun listen. A bit predictable for me but didn't take away from the enjoyment of following Olivia and Liam during their adventure.

After a series of "suicides" of nurses at high schools, the Hunters come to the town Falkville Falls to find who or what is causing the deaths. Liam and Olivia see each other across the school parking lot and their awkward interactions. Olivia's father is the sheriff in town so the Hunters keep close while the investigate. The tension and angst between Olivia and Liam happens fast and Liam's comments can be cringe at times. I mean, he is a 19 year old boy with too much confidence, haha. This book has non stop action and the ending left me hanging. Looking forward to when the second book comes out...

[I received an ARC, thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, in return for an honest review.]

NO NO NO WHY DID IT END, I NEED MORE.

My original opinion of ‘this book isn’t for me’ switched to ‘ooh what’s going to happen next’ around the 20-30% mark. At first, I found the premise interesting but the characters SO irritating. It’s hard to read a book when you dislike all the characters.

I did start to warm up to them (even Liam, who makes some seriously creepy/cringe remarks at points) and overall it was an enjoyable, gripping read by the end. So much so that I ended up in the acknowledgments without realising I’d demolished the entire book!

So, what can you expect from Hunterland? There are ghosts, vampires, werewolves and other ghoulish monsters, plus a monster-hunting and weapon-touting family of three. There’s mystery (ooh a supernatural serial killer? Indeed.) and there’s drama (will they kiss? Won’t they? I mean, they probably will because they’re teenagers…).

This is definitely targeted at the upper YA category (the sexual tension is prominent) and is ideal for anyone who’s a fan of Supernatural or The Vampire Diaries.

A solid four stars 🌟 and I’m looking forward to the next instalment in the Hunterland realm!

I really like this authors writing style! This was a good start to a new series.
The characters were likeable and relatable, even Pepper, who I wanted to shake some sense into at times. The chemistry between Liam and Olivia is undeniable. The enemies-to-lovers was teetering back and forth, which made sense to for these characters. The resistance was natural. I liked the dual point of view as well.
There is a lot of action - they were hunting monsters after all. The book was not easy to put down, I had to force myself to go to sleep. I enjoyed both the mystery and supernatural aspects of the story - there were ghosts, vampires and werewolves. Just when you think the mystery is resolved, you are reminded that there was a sub-plot. I am looking forward to seeing where that goes in the next book.
The only thing that bothered me about the book were that some of the cliffhanger chapter endings didn’t actually make sense as cliffhangers. It happened a couple of times where the next chapter started as if the resolution already happened and then we just continue on with the story. Besides that, the story flowed nicely.
Trigger warning: hangings, gory details

I reviewed an ARC of this book. I debated between giving this two and three stars because although I did not feel this book was particularly well written, I at least enjoyed reading it. Let’s say 2.5 stars rounded up because I at least enjoyed reading it.

The goods:
-It was fast paced enough that it was easy to sit down and read a lot of the book without realizing it
-It was fun to read story that takes place in Wisconsin as a wisco girl myself

The not so goods:
-Although I found the book easy to read I did not like the writing style. It seemed to want to tell not show and went back and forth between over explaining everything and explaining nothing. The chapters would also end on cliffhangers that were then just quickly resolved between chapters in weird ways. Also I found a lot of the thoughts and dialogue seemed clunky and not at all how teenagers would talk at all. Liam’s POV especially had a lot of moments where the thoughts seemed kind of silly and over the top.
-Liam and Olivia’s relationship is all over the place with no consistent development at all. They make out, go back to hating each other, suddenly act like a lovey couple, hate each other more, sleep in the same bed, and then seem to end the book in some weird limbo. I had a hard time seeing what they saw in each other at all
-A huge inconsistency I found particularly glaring was the patches on the bag. When it is first introduced Liam makes a big deal about the patches being on Olivia’s bag but then a couple chapters later they’re suddenly on Pipers bag and Liam is saying he needs to talk to Piper since he first saw them on her bag. It’s a decent sized plot point and it seems this slipped through editing.
-The one LGBT character is randomly killed in a brutal way in a classic kill the gays move
-The ghost plotline seems rushed and anti-climatic, not sure why the book didnt just focus on the vampires and werewolves since it seems to be more interested in that anyway.

It brings to mind books like Twilight, but better.

When a series of school nurse "suicides" occurs, teenagers Pepper and Olivia know their dad will get to the bottom of things. After all, he is the sheriff.

However, the Hunter family arrives on the scene with the intention of solving the case. In doing so, they completely shatter everything the girls thought they knew, totally shaking up their grasp on reality.

These cases aren't what they seem and as the girls discover a world of monsters truly exists, as well as discovering their possession of unique abilities, chaos and death ensues leaving them to face dangers they could have only dreamt of.

With a healthy amount of slow burn romance, teen angst, death and monsters, this story takes you on a wild ride. I enjoyed Claire's writing and look forward to experiencing more.

Genre: YA, paranormal and supernatural
Tropes: Enemies to lovers, forced proximity, dual POV
For fans of: Nancy Drew, Supernatural, Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, Twilight

I absolutely loved the concept of this book, and as a huge fan of the above I really enjoyed the high school kids turned hunters of the paranormal storyline! Dana Claire’s vision of vampires and werewolves really fascinated me and the action packed hunting scenes had me hooked. The whole time reading I could totally picture this as a TV show! It ends on a total cliffhanger that will leave you dying for the next book in the series!

This book is a great fit for anyone who likes the shows SUPERNATURAL and TEEN WOLF or TVD. There is some monster slaying and also some teen drama, some secret powers revelations along with dark family secrets. I enjoyed this book! However I would say that the second half of the book suffered from some strange pacing. I thought some plot details could’ve been saved for the next book, because this sounds like it’s going to be a monster hunting series.

There is some teen romance, emphasis on teen, but I actually thought everyone behaved like teens in a realistic way—at once wanting to ruffle their hair but maybe kick them in the shin. But if you like teen monster stories this is a fun read. I would give this book 3.75 stars.

Heat level: 1🌶️. heavy kissing and sleeping together for sleep.

Fast-paced, full of both action and emotion. Familiar and yet, fresh. Dana Claire manages to take so much of the supernatural lore that seems common knowledge today and gift it just enough of a twist, adding psychic abilities into the mix, to make this a neat and not fully explored urban fantasy world. And the characters are great! Olivia, her sister and their sheriff father are a family that only becomes stronger as tragedy and danger strike. And the Hunters? Very cool. If you loved Supernatural, you need to check this series out. Liam is Dean Winchester in those episodes where he was in high school… *happy sigh*

I cannot wait to see how things continue in the next one!

I expected more action and more of a gritty Supernatural feel. This book was more character driven than I thought it would be, maybe due to the first person POVs. The cover definitely caught my eye. I probably won't continue this series because my TBR pile is about to fall over. Honestly, I wanted to like this more but the bland writing caused it to fall very short.

Coming from someone who loved Supernatural and has a thing for the Bad Boy Trope, this was an absolute delight to read. The characters were compelling, the banter was phenomenal, and the relationship between Liv and Liam got the heart pumping and was exciting to watch as it unfolded.

Claire's prose is clear and crisp, and the twists and turns she leads you through keep you glued to the pages.

What a fantastic, suspenseful and highly entertaining start to this new series. Right from the dramatic beginning I got swept away into all the drama, angst, and mystery of the story. And then you add into the mix supernatural elements and monster hunters, I could not get enough of it. The story had me riveted to my seat and devouring every page.

Olivia and Pepper are two sisters just trying to carve out their own paths in life and they couldn’t be more opposite. When weird deaths start happening in their town and then a unique monster hunting family shows up all hell breaks loose and Olivia and Pepper’s lives are about to get even crazier!

I loved this story that was filled with supernatural elements, monster hunters with unique gadgets, people with magical superpowers and all kinds of unhinged monsters. It was action packed, exciting, suspenseful, twisted and so freaking entertaining that I could keep reading it and reading it. I can’t wait to see where this story takes us next!
