What a pleasant book to read/to study. In the orientation, first phrase: research is an activity that has to do with the major questions in life. And yes, if you look for answer's , the book delivers. Just read the short sections about the sun, moon and stars and you'll find out. The chapters on 'nature in the Netherlands', 'human and nature' and 'nature and science' are both informative and nice/nearly funny to read and give a pleasant overview of the subject. The kind of overview that you would have loved studying history at secondary school. Most chapters on the different species have a similar structure. They start with wat is relevant and how the reader can participate in research and monitoring. Then, it describes the different features of the species in the Netherlands. It provides the relevant scientific background, the essential practical knowledge and useful information how to help with monitoring and further studies. It never gets dull. Sometimes, it is really funny. One example of a sentence in Dutch on Pissebedden: 'Pissebedden - vroeger ook wel kelderzeugen of muurvarkens genoemd - horen bij de kreeftachtigen (Crustacea) The book is, in every respect, pleasant and written by someone who loves and embrace the subject and, though worried about certain developments, is still able to show it's beauty.
