There's a path that runs straight through the village,
But it stops at the edge of the wood.
It halts at the borders between worlds,
For beyond, there lies nothing of good.
Hushed whispers all speak of what haunts there,
In the brack, in the depths of the fen -
The creatures both monstrous and gaunt there,
Not the village's hale, hearty men.
But cradled in claws in the shadows -
Something kindles like flickering fire -
As hammering heart howls to run,
Something deeper stills, caught by desire.

🌲 Between Heaven and Earth by by Y.D. La Mar RATING: 5⭐️ — first person dual POV
🪵 B L U R B 🪵 Princesses are destined to keep the monarchy going through marriage. My people, the Kinnara, mate for life, but love is a luxury granted to those without royal responsibilities. I know my duties come before my desires, so why do I find myself drawn to the one male I’m forbidden to love? I do not have the luxury to love the fiercely loyal and primal gajasimha assigned as a palace guard, but when dark forces in the woods threaten all we know, how could I deny my heart to the one broken hero who risked it all?
🪵 R E V I E W 🪵 I couldn’t help but feel bad for Kinnara for most of this story. She lives within an archaic, antiquated monarchy. I kept wishing for more for her. I wanted her to achieve the freedom she longed for, to be her own person instead of seen as merely a womb. And right when I was starting to see a light ahead YD pulled the preverbal rug out from under me. I know I should be intrigued by the people in the forest but they have we wanting more. I’d be curious to know if they are actually alive or if they’re more of an evil spirit type of thing.
Even with all the danger, damage, and misunderstandings, this Beauty and the Beast story has a beautiful ending. I could be happier with the way live triumphed above all else.
🖤 Gajasimha pairing with 📖 Southeast Asian Lore 🖤 Forbidden love & Damaged Hero 🖤 HFN/complete ending

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 Once upon a time there lived a lamb as pure as snow Sold by family, shepherd-raised, he'd had no place to go The night he reached maturity, the lamb was sold once more By the highest bidder, claimed and owned, brought to the palace floor Offered up, a princely gift, but to the lamb's dismay - The present of his presence shunned, the lamb was turned away. By the wolf, his royal highness, no welcome was there given; Yet thawed by something secret, and by longing instincts driven - The feast of senses offered may yet turn him to a glutton; And by fang and claw, and lustful awe, ...he may yet crave some mutton.
🪵R E V I E W 🪵 it took a minute to get used to the world but thankfully the authors reference guide at the beginning helped speed things up. In this world Alphas are called Wolves and they are generally powerful members of society. Meanwhile the Omegas are called Lambs and are intersex. Shepard, who are one of many different versions of betas, raise the Lambs in training camps/boarding schools called flocks. Skin is called their coats and their hair is their fur. It’s a fascinating world and I’m dying for more.
Little lamb Sigourney has extremely fair hair and skin, his coloring is a sought after rarity. So when it’s time for him to go up for auction he fears that the wealthiest, and scariest, of the Wolves will be vying for him. And his worst fears come true, he’s become the property of the Conri - the Wolf General of the Bloodhounds.
In a moment of turmoil, Sigourney runs away and I couldn’t have been happier for his escape. But it’s his savior in the woods that intrigues me the most. I cannot wait to see where this story leads and how this little lamb fares amongst the wolves.

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 Madeline Jane. I thought breaking up with my ex would be the worst part of my day. Turned out I was very wrong. Instead, I marched my cute little plaid-covered butt into the woods to escape. Then I was attacked by demon-looking creatures in a magical realm. I was saved, or kidnapped, depending on how you look at it, by a strong, yet, kind of sexy, massive green monster called an Orc. Which leads me to the tremendously scary, grumpy, and ready-to-mate chieftain Brizor. Could I really find my happily ever after with a monster from getting lost in the woods?
🪵 B L U R B 🪵 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚… 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙨, 𝘿𝙖𝙧𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙚𝙚𝙥. Not all fae are pretty…some are frightening. Claws, thorns, and tentacles. Nightmares from shadow. I was promised to the worst of them all. The Prince of Death. He comes to my dreams, devours me at night. He means to consume every part of me. But my broken heart sings to him as it calls to the other hellish creatures who crave me too. My family were the ones who stole dark magic from the Unseelie fae. For seven years, my blood and sacrifices are supposed to pay the price. But the spark between us holds a secret. It runs through my veins. Power only a queen should have. Twisted. Dormant. 𝒟𝒶𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓇𝑜𝓊𝓈. Humans aren’t meant to be divine. The Monsters of the Dark Fae will hunt me down. The Starless Royals will bathe in my blood. The Sluagh will consume me. But Gods may cry, the deadly host shall rise, and the world will weep…before 𝑀𝓎 𝑀𝑜𝓃𝓈𝓉𝑒𝓇𝓈 let them have me.
🪵 B L U R B 🪵 After a grueling training session in his quest to become a samurai, Kazuo must brave the snowy woods to feed his family. A skilled, diligent hunter, he is as sure of his success as he is his training: his sharp aim and arrows stand ready to bring home a bounty. Deep in the woods, however, he soon finds that even the steadiest hand is useless when it's at the mercy of another. When a beautiful, bold vision of legend sets her sights on him, the mighty hunter finds himself playing prey instead, all while falling into an exquisite, nine-tailed trap.

Oisin and Talam have been waiting for their mate. The moment Erica steps foot in their woods, they are awakened… Growling and thorny. No, horny. The vines of love will bind these three together and stroke the fires of passion. Erica is in for a life changing adventure on her journey into the woods.

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 RUSALKA There are many reasons men shouldn’t venture too deep into these woods, especially on a night when the air is already flavored with death. One of those reasons is me. Driven by an instinctual need, I haunt this forest, seeking prey to satisfy my hunger for blood and my lust for flesh. Who shall fall victim to my beautiful trap tonight? . KONSTANTIN My world turned to dust years ago when I lost my lisichka, my little fox. Her death was the worst thing to happen to me, with every day since then clouded by grief. Then I find myself lost in the woods, running from a horror I thought only existed in folklore. Now I’m the prey, and the predator chasing me is my worst nightmare—and my darkest dream. Will death finally pull me under where I belong?

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 I’m falling down the rabbit hole into Chesire’s Den of Debauchery. I’m obsessed with my desires and only one thing can bring me satisfaction - Caterpillar. However this time… his plotting might not unfold exactly as he planned.

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 The rainforests house many unknown plants and creatures. As an award winning botanist, I’ve discovered my fair share. But one more failed expedition and my funding will be weeded out. My quest to find an elusive plant leads me to an unexpected treasure, one that could change my fortunes forever. The only problem is, I want to keep him for myself, and he feels the same way. Something tells me we’ll be rooting for love.

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 In the unfamiliar forests of Vermont, Mila finds herself out of her comfort zone in more ways than one. While cleaning up the mess her estranged husband left behind, a late spring snow storm threatens her life. Her unlikely rescuers aren’t just living in the woods, however: they’re an intrinsic part of them. Old bonds, new debts, and ancient magic flow like snow melt in this short, steamy tale of love and lust between the trees. . . 🌲The Ogre’s Pet by Kassandra Cross
🪵 B L U R B 🪵 We all knew never to go into the woods at night… It’s been years since I visited the town I grew up in. So it’s just my luck that on my first night back I’m hassled by some jerk in a bar and have to make a run for it. When we were kids we were always told to stay away from the woods. That if we went inside, then we would never return. Now I’m running directly into them, away from one monster, but straight into the arms of another. I’ve been captured by The Ogre. A hungry beast who eats everything he takes, and who lives off flesh and fear. But when he gets his hands on me, he decides he doesn’t want to eat me like the others. This Ogre wants to punish me for coming into his forest. And once he’s done, he might just keep me as his pet. . . 🌲Poison Games by Sienna Varrone
🪵 B L U R B 🪵 Long ago, a legend was born of the resurrecting power of a gorgon’s blood. The right half could heal and bring back the dead, and the left half was lethal and a single taste would ensure a one-way trip to the underworld. Mortals saw us as nothing more than monsters to be hunted and bled dry. I endured the attacks for years, but when my sisters were taken from this earth, I grew vicious and vengeful. One of the gods exploited my pain and turned me into a weapon of death. My body and blood were infected with the god’s twisted magic and I became the beast the humans believed me to be. Alone and lost, I retreated to Elgin Wood, the last home I’d shared with my sisters. Yet men still came for my blood, not knowing I’d lost the power they sought. The monster they found was nothing like the legend, and before they could take a drop from me, I turned them all to stone. Fifty immortalized men should’ve been enough to deter any man, but the twins that were hired to steal my blood ventured into my forest with a desire for darkness. I was willing to play a game of poison, if they were.

🪵 B L U R B 🪵 I was only six when I met him, the monster in my wood. Wolven—an ungodly kind of dire wolf that walks on two legs. They are beastly, larger, and more ferocious than a wolf shifter, and if only some tales about them are true, then my fate is desperate indeed. Only he is none of those things. He lets me nestle upon his lap. He listens to my stories. Until one day, he disappears. Many years pass, and war consumes our lands. Fleeing for my life, my sweet monster rescues me… at least I thought he did. Then he tells me the truth. “Foolish human,” he says in a deep, rumbly voice. “I wasn’t rescuing you. I was capturing you for myself.”

FINAL NOTES & HOUSEKEEPING: PLEASE, please read this update from the author/organizer before bashing this anthology over an author that is no longer affiliated.
If you are on the fence, here is yet another update stating that KDP was the cause for the problem, and NOT the authors & organizers.
1 A Step Between Realms Kind of just jumped right in with the story and the steam, huh? I’m wondering if all the stories will be like this one - with very minimal story and more just… immediately meet and banging. 1⭐
2 Between Heaven and Earth Immediately I’m thrown by the species. Her has the head of an elephant, body of a lion; heroine is top half human, bottom half swan. I had a really hard time with this one, maybe because there were SO many characters? A king, advisor, the heroine is one of seven sisters, the many guards… I just found it to be confusing. 1⭐
3 Captured by the Wolven I’ve never heard of a Wolven before. Again, I’m super underwhelmed by the insta love. I don’t find the smut good enough for this to be “just smut”. 1⭐
4 Caught by the Werewolf The grip on my hips tightens as his eyes meet mine. “And you’re a fan of monsters, aren’t you?” I rock my hips and grind against the cording of his stomach. “I seem to have a soft spot for them.” Jack smiles and the number of sharp teeth revealed startles me, but his mirth is tangible. “In your heart?” My nose scrunches. “Well yes, but also somewhere lower.” 5⭐ - FINALLY
5 Foxing Really fun but kind of unsatisfying only because I wish it was longer! I have no idea what the actual story was - the hero wanting to be a samurai, the starvation / lack of food for his village, if people know there’s some kinds of magic in their world… but it was fun. 3⭐
6 From the Depths A really interesting concept, and I liked the inclusion of what I’m pretty sure if Russian folklore. This one actually felt like the perfect length for the story. 4⭐
7 Gods May Cry This wound up being a piece of a full story - the ending is “to be continued” and it tells you to pre-order the full story. I… hate that. It’s like putting a sales pitch in what’s supposed to be contained stories within an anthology. It gives me an ick, for sure. 1⭐
8 Hookah Smoking Caterpillar Despite the fact that I hate insects and don’t understand formicophilia… I kind of loved this twisted Alice in Wonderland story. This is another one where I wish there was more because Cheshire is so PSYCHO. 4⭐
9 Incubus Dreams Another story that ends with a “pre-order the full book now!” … Is this a thing, in anthologies? Granted I haven’t read many but every one I have read never had short stories like this, where it was basically a prologue/chapters from the full story. I don’t like it. BTW: extremely dubious consent. 3⭐
10 Into the Thick of It Eh 1⭐
11 Poison Games Interesting concept and loved the powerful, villainous heroine. 3⭐
12 Rooting for Love Kind of weird? 1⭐
13 Sap, Snow and Spile I’m getting kind of tired of these micro stories but I’m so close to finishing I don’t want to pause. Each one is formulaic in that you rush to introduce the monster and world and go straight to boinking bc it’s a limited amount of time. Maybe this type of short smut story just isn’t my jam? A few have worked but most were like this, leaving me wanting. 1⭐
14 The Ogre’s Pet Can you really get freaky with someone who eats humans? Not someone who kills humans or drinks their blood or whatever - but someone who actually eats humans like a chicken wing? No thank you 1⭐
15 What Big Teeth ANOTHER ONE WITH A FUCKING “TO BE CONTINUED IN A LONGER FULL STORY”. ARE YOU JOKING. STOP DOING THIS. 1⭐
16 Where Darkness Wanders The hero was the president of a company with “more money than Google, Microsoft, and Amazon combined.” Also he’s 28 at the time of this book, so you’re saying he built a company that profitable in his early 20s? I’m all for monster fucking but lets not be completely unrealistic here. AAAAAAND AGAIN, it ends with no resolution. WHY. WHYYYY. 1⭐
I did not read all of these stories, as not all of them interested me.
Step Between Realms - Elizabeth Austin - 3 smut-scale stars!
Madeline Jane finds herself lost in the woods after she finds out her fiance has been cheating on her. Just as she is about to be attacked, she is saved by Orcs and left in Orc Chief Brizor's home. Brizor recognizes Madeline as his mate and sets out to prove to her that they are forever. This is a short, HFN, instalove, fated mates story with plenty of steam and a little Somnophilia.
Caught by the Werewolf - Lillian Lark - 3 - 3.5 stars!
A werewolf that thinks he's cursed and a witch determined to show him that monstrous or not, the mate bond calls to her and they are meant to be. This is a short, fated mates, rejected mate and steamy story with a HFN/HEA.
Captured by the Wolven: A Coveted Prey Short Story - L.V. Lane - 4 stars!
I don't know why I found this short little story so hot but it was. A little girl meets a Wolven on the edge of their realms and strike up a friendly relationship. One day the Wolven doesn't return and years pass. War, sadness and despair sweep the country. That little girl becomes a woman and runs straight into the Wolven's territory one day. She is HIS now. Steamy as hell. I wish it had been longer. HFN/HEA.
Gods May Cry - Lea Jade - 3.5 - 4 stars!
The vine monster (or something) requires payment and Catriona just sealed her fate. Don't really know what's going on or what's happening. Monster smut. Cliffhanger.
Incubus Dreams - Maeve Black - 4.5 stars!
Drew is a virgin and has never felt sexually attracted to anyone. She has particular tastes. Lured into a forest by her friend, she ends up with Aegan the Incubus. Drew is special and Aegan is just realizing that she may be his but Drew will be gone when he comes to find her. Cliffhanger (ughhh). I won't lie this pushed my boundaries but...o hell it was hot. Somnophilia, tail play and just all around dirty monster smut. Definitely interested in their conclusion.
Into The Thick Of It - Clio Evans - 3 smut-scale stars!
Erica wanders into the woods and awakens Oisin and Talam. Erica is their mate and they set to claiming her. I'm just not a fan of MMF. The female always feels like an afterthought. Meh...o well. Clio still writes some dirty fun though.
The Ogre's Pet - Kassandra Cross - 3 smut- scale stars!
Kai is cursed (half man/half dragon) and Poe finds herself in his territory. He isn't letting her go but what happens when Poe's life catches up to her? Don't know...cliffhanger. Didn't like that Poe was so young.
Into the Woods: A Monster Anthology was actually pretty good. Way better than the last anthology with monsters.
In this, you will read about 16 short stories. Out of those, I think there were about 2 that had a TBD in them. Which can definitely annoy me because I would rather have a full short story than a tiny piece of one. For some reason, I was okay with what happened to those because I could totally see myself reading a full book of them. So, now I just need a full book of those TBD stories.
Other than that, I really enjoyed some of the retelling stories throughout this. Definitely got red riding hood, beauty and the beast, and some alice vibes. I also don't think there was a story I truly disliked either. Maybe one that was a bit odd but still likable in my eyes.
In the end, I would definitely read a book from any of the authors who participated in this anthology. Especially if they are dark, have sexy monsters, and some hot romance to devour.
I’m not a huge anthology fan… they’re hard to rate and often difficult to get into. I stumbled across a couple on KU and decided to give it a shot because this time of the year I tend to have choppy reading opportunities (between sports) and thought the shorter length would be a good fit. I’m going to leave this as a 2.5 ⭐, but only read about ½ of the stories.
Into the Wood is pretty much an anthology of monster erotica. Each story has a blurb with trigger/content warnings, so you know what you’re getting into. All have different species/worlds, but they all have something to do with the woods. (lost in the woods, dangerous woods, woods that separate realms, etc.)
A Step Between Realms - Elizabeth Austin Content Warning There is a tiny bit of light somnophilia (sexual action going on while one party is sleeping…but the sleeping party will be very happy about it), sex with a monster, graphic sex and language, and chasing.
Chief Brizor is a sexy green Orc that is looking for a mate. Madeline Jane is a human captured by his brother and given as a gift. Things move quickly because they’re soulmates and extremely horny as soon as they make eye contact. This one is mostly one long romp.
Between Heaven and Earth - YD La Mar Courtesy Warning This book may contain triggers for some. Triggers may include but are not limited to violence, kidnapping and torture.
Princess Kannit is the future leader of the Kinnara (human torso with a swan lower half) and expected to marry for political gain, but secretly she’s been in love with her Gajasimha (elephant head with lion mane and body) bodyguard Rith. The two find themselves fighting for their lives when they get lost in the woods. This one has more plot with less smut. I really liked it at the beginning, but it started to lag a bit towards the end. Beauty and the Beast/forbidden/captive-tortured themes.
Captured by the Wolven: Sweet Monsters - L.V. Lane Themes: size difference, knotting, dirty-talking monster, breeding kink!
Ivy met a wolven (upright lycan-ish) when she was six. He visited her often but disappeared for many years. The story opens with Ivy escaping (town attacked) into the woods when she’s rescued by her wolven. Balen knew Ivy was his mate but left her (watching from a distance) so she could grow up. This is pretty balanced between smut/plot. It reads like a smutty lycan omegaverse.
Caught by the Werewolf - Lillian Lark Content Warnings Chasing, sex with a beast, cozy stalking, knotting, rejected mate, and a tiny bit of non-consensual oral.
Belinda is a witch that runs a small shop. The story opens with her tromping through the woods looking for her date’s house. She’s trying to forget a certain wolf that rejected her. Then we go back to a month earlier when she met her mate Jack when he came in looking for help to break a curse. This one is pretty sweet. It’s not the typical rejected mate scenario and there’s not any angst or anything. It ends with a make-up sex session. This one is more plot less smut… a sweet-ish.
Incubus Dreams - Maeve Black Trigger Warnings Stalking, luring, drugging, and noncon. There are sexual situations with honorifics, squirting, unprotected sex, somnophilia, tail play, anal play, double-penetration.
Aegen is an Incubus that is somehow trapped on Earth or a realm that only connects with Earth certain nights… I’m fuzzy on details because we’re told he misses his home (Darchon), and that he lives away from his people with his friend Viantra, but at the end it says Drew must return to her world. They need sex magic to survive and help each other hookup with others. Enter Drew, a human that befriends Vi and is set up (drugged) and given to Aegen. The rest is a long sexual encounter where both have an explosive connection. Aegen thinks she must be his cinniúint (soulmate). I liked this one, but it ended on a cliffy and the author didn’t tell us (I avoid the ones without a set ending), so that irked me. The End To be continued… Pre-order Incubus Promises now! 🤬🤬
Bottom Line- You really need to be in the mood for smut… and smut with non-humans. I felt like the smut short-story format worked because smutty reads work best in smaller doses and don’t need a ton of plot.
If I'm learning anything it's that Anthologies are just not for me. In this instance many (not all) of the stories are just shorter versions of other hella good books out there many of us have already read. Given the length of each story there's not much time for development or story evolution. The romance, the relationship, hell everything is going at warp speed. The worst thing for me is how many authors don't even include short stories but the first few chapters of another longer book or series. Personally I think this is just messed up and not OK. In this there were only like 3 or 4 books that end as to be continued or are part of a larger series/offshoot story. I believe all either note this before the start of the story or at the end so do some research if you're like me and need a warning. Some stories were enjoyable and rather original or at least like nothing I've read before and others were just not that memorable. If you're looking for some short monster porn this will def be for you.

Jayda's journey hooked me right from the start! It brought heart and steamy goodness that i couldn't get enough of! I am kicking myself for not having picked up their work sooner! I can't wait for more from this duo!
The Ogre's Pet by Kassandra Cross - As soon as i saw the word Ogre in the title, i was like "I'm so In!" ! I've been wanting to pick up Ms.Cross's work and i am so glad that i finally got the chance to with this story! It had my attention so quickly! A woman goes into the woods and is brought into this Ogre's world. The heat between these two was so great! I can't wait to read more of Ms.Cross's work in the future!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this anthology from the authors*
Who doesn’t love monsters? I know I do and this anthology gives us a little taste of everything. It’s the perfect book to sink your teeth into if you’re new to this trope or unsure of what you’re into.
This anthology features 16 tales featuring a variety of talented authors, each story featured around a unique concept. You’re going to get a a mix of sweet, spicy, ménage,Poly, and Kink with these stories…and a few definitely have me salivating for more.
I can’t wait to see where these stories lead and where these amazing authors take these characters.

Ok! Read all of the stories in this. And had some I loved some I didn’t like at all.
stories I loved- Captured by the Wolven- L.V. Lane Incubus Dreams- Maeve Black
Stories I liked- A Step Between Worlds- Elizabeth Austin Between Heaven and Earth- YD La Mar Caught by the Werewolf- Lillian Lark Gods May Cry- Lea Jade The Ogre’s Pet- Kassandra Cross Where Darkness Wanders A.R. Breck
Ok/ Meh- Foxing- Ashley Bennet Hookah Smoking Caterpillar- Beatrix Hollow Into the thick of it- Clio Evans Poison Games- Sienna Varrone Rooting for Love- Helena Novak & Natalia Prim
A great array of different monster stories. No two are the same. Some are sweet, some are a bit angsty, some get the pulse going. Each one however was a delight to read and explore. Considering they are short stories they all have a great amount of world building which makes the stories work incredibly well. Many of them I look forward to exploring further in associated longer books in the future.
The Lillian Lark and Belatrix Hollow stories definitely stood out as favorites. What was frustrating was how some of the short stories were incomplete and teasers to longer stories. I automatically am NOT interested in an author when that happens and I’m expecting a full story, like other authors in the collection were kind enough to write.
A Step Between Realms - Elizabeth Austin- when Madeline leaves her ex behind and takes a walk into the woods she it able to go through the veil and meet the Orcs. I loved this short story.
Between Heaven and Earth - YD La Mar- Kannit ran into the woods to save her sister but when she and her guard Rith get trapped things start to happen.
Captured by the Wolven: Sweet Monsters - L.V. Lane- Ivy had a woven friend who she use to talk to everyday until he stop coming. When war broke out he rescued her or did he. This story so far is my favorite. She had me at themes of the book.
Caught by the Werewolf - Lillian Lark- oh this book is running for first but will be my second favorite story. Jack came to Belinda who is a witch to help him a curse. This story was very good.
Foxing - Ashley Bennett- wellllll....this just one one as favorite. This story is about a samurai named Kazuo. Kazuo goes into the Forrest to hunt before winter get to bad. He runs into a kitsune. This story was amazing. I can't wait for the full story of this.
From the Depths - C. Rochelle - Konstantin and Margo story is different and wow some of the twists.
Gods May Cry - Lea Jade- Wow this was amazing set up for full story later. Ríona is back ti her hometown and meets Kellan. This story held my attention as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I can't wait for the full version.
Hookah Smoking Caterpillar - Beatrix Hollow- one story I love is a good retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Ummmm all I have to say is Caterpillar, Cheshire, and Alice this story was hot and on point. I would love a fuller story.
Incubus Dreams - Maeve Black- wow this book was amazing. Drew went into the woods but did she come out not changed? Well this little glimpse into a full story has made me want to read it so bad.
Into The Thick Of It - Clio Evans- Erica need a time out from life and rented a cabin in the woods. She found her mates Talam and Oisin. This was a good story.
Poison Games - Sienna Varrone - Malika and Dayton go into the woods where Stheno is. This is a Greek mythology and wow it was amazing.
Rooting for Love - Helena Novak & Natalia Prim- Jayda and Ellie in the rainforest. When Leon leaves gift for Jadya. This book is MFF and wow was it interesting
Sap, Snow, and Spile - Vera Valentine- Milia is picking up the pieces of her life after her astranged husband dies. She was meets Alsam and Sier and everything changes. This was a quick good story.
The Ogre’s Pet - Kassandra Cross- this book is short and hot. Orge's pet is just as the title say.
What Big Teeth - Salem Sinclair- omegaverse, red riding retelling yes please. Sigourney and Marrok story does end off on a cliffhanger for a full version that I can't wait to read.
Where Darkness Wanders - A.R. Breck- Poe ran away from her foster home and into the woods she meet Kai. This book does leave off on a cliffhanger so I hope we get a full story later.
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶/5 TW: Varies by story Tropes/Kinks: varies by story
Never have I ever wanted to get lost in the woods until I read this anthology! "Into the Woods" is for everyone regardless of if it's your first introduction to monster romances or if you're a seasoned reader; there is a little bit of something for every interest and kink! I know I definitely discovered new interests and some really great authors to add to my TBR!
Something I really want to highlight about this anthology is that it is not quite like the normal monster romances people think of. There's a mix of the usual tropes, but largely the stories are very unique and original, taking creative liberties in revamping lore, myths, and tropes to fit our modern audience. Also, there's a good bit of queer and BIPOC representation in these tales that I went feral for!
If you are wanting more of any of the stories told in this anthology, not all of the stories are a HEA! Some are HFN or end on a cliffhanger that will be explored in novel/la forms in the coming future. I absolutely love that since I'm pretty invested in the characters and stories!
**I received an advanced reader copy of this book, and I am writing this review voluntarily.
Forests, monsters, questionable stories, oh my! Full disclosure: if this book only contained Captured by the Werewolf it would easily be five stars, but it’s an anthology where most of the authors use it to promote their other stories. And the trigger warnings… oh my word those were a hoot. I know this is pretty much monster porn (avert your eyes children) the further along the stories went the more I was feeling like Jack the Pumpkin King from the Nightmare before Christmas discovering Christmas Town for the time (what does it mean? What does it mean? What is this? Were the most constant things going through my head) Seriously though what on earth is breath play? I was too terrified to read the story to find out especially since it’s supposed to be a samurai. Like none of the stories made sense and very little of them actually had any plot or logic, but again monster porn throw everything you know out the window because there’ll be species that shouldn’t mix or logically be able to procreate.
If anybody over the age of eighteen is looking for a good laugh I’d recommend this book because I haven’t laughed over a book in a long time and the moments were supposed to be serious 😂
This was my first BIG dive into actual “monsters”. I’ve read loads of wolves, shifters, etc, but this was the first time I have jumped headfirst into monsters.
They threw me in the deep end with the first book being about Orcs…which I honestly have AVOIDED. I. Absolutely. Loved. It. I wanted MOOOOOORE! So I was immediately hooked and ready to keep reading. I was introduced to several other types of monsters I haven’t read. Each story I read was exceptionally well written. I would love for extended versions of most of them.
This would be a great intro into reading about monsters for someone who’s looking to dabble at first. There’s nothing crazy long with drawn out stories. They were all to the point and everything was set up very well.
*full disclosure* there were two I skipped because they weren’t my “thing”. I don’t feel it’s fair to rate this without making that known.
This is one anthology of just monster fucking. Now monster fucking requires me to be in a certain type of mood to read and I think this was just my bad for reading two monster books back to back and the second one being an anthology because I was so like tired while reading this. Idk it felt like a lot of the stories had the same kind of flair to them. Also there were multiple stories with like a TBD on them where I was kinda like ???? Like I thought it was a collection of short stories why am I reading a preview. Overall very meh so to say. I will say tho that if you like breeding kinks or like authentic ass monsters like not even human looking then the book is for you.
Bought it for Lillian Lark’s story which was probably my favorite, but I was absolutely *not* expecting the story with Alice, Caterpillar and Cheshire Cat to be smoking hot. I do not at all want anything caterpillar-y or barbed in my life but the three of them had a very good time. Many of the rest were Not Great and I was annoyed at how many stories ended with a “for the rest of the story, pick up my book blah blah”. Putting a prologue to an actual story in an anthology of short stories is a ripoff and there are *several* in here.
This was a fun anthology. Some stories I liked more, some less. I'm definitely interested in reading the full novels of some of the stories and I'll be keeping eye on when they release. My personal favourites were Caught by the Werewolf by Lillian Lark (I love the author, so no surprise there) and Incubus Dreams by Maeve Black. 3,5 ⭐ overall from me.
Some stories were good some were immediate skips, some I only read because they were SO strange??? Idk. Lillian Lark is in there though and she killed it as usual so there’s that at least
Ps, I’ve been smokin a lot of 🍃 lately so I’ve been reading short weird monster stuff (but is that any different from my usual? Probably not)
Wow! This Anthology is amazing! While there are some stories that I genuinely became obsessed with, I LOVED every single story! This was an amazing and fun read! I’m excited for the stories that are being developed into their own books (read it and you’ll see which ones I’m talking about!!) I’ve read a large number of works by these amazing authors already and this anthology just made me love them even more! Some authors were new to me, and this has caused me to download some of their other works! I absolutely loved this so so so much and will 100% be adding this book to my shelves ASAP
Into The Woods has the best group of authors with some monstrously spicy short stories. You can find anything to tickle your monster fancy in this awesome anthology.
I loved all the stories and I highly recommend you pick this one up so you can discover so many new tropes, monsters, and k1nks 😏
I loved some of the stories and didn’t like others. I skipped one entirely. I got bored about 60% through because all the stories had the same story line. I understand it’s all about monsters in the woods but they could’ve added something to help their story stand out.
A Step Between Realms Elizabeth Austin 2.5⭐️ It was okay but I felt like no chemistry 😂😂😂 it felt more like a really really intense hook up
Between Heaven & Earth by YD La Mar 1⭐️ I had ABSOLUTELY NO idea what was happening. It was so choppy and it made absolutely no sense.
Captured by the wolven: sweet monsters L.V.Lane 3⭐️ That was cute. This one I felt that there was some chemistry between them from beginning to end 🥺
Caught by the Werewolf Lillian Lark 4⭐️ I swear Lillian Lark will forever be an auto buy and an auto read. she knows how to write characters and their connections so well😍
Foxing Ashley Bennett 5⭐️ UGH THIS IS SOOO GOOD!!! I want more of the story!!! Pegging with a tail 🥵🥵🥵 OKAYYYY I SEE YOUUU!!!
From the Depths C.Rochelle 5⭐️ Ugh this was sooo good! I felt the chemistry INSTANTLY! And love me a good folklore. I want more from this author!!
Gods May Cry: Monsters of the Dark Fae by Lea Jade 4.5⭐️ I WANT MORE! Ugh I hate to be continued books because they put me on the edge of my seat! This novella was so good!
Hookah Smoking Catepillar By Beatrix Hollow HOLY SHIT THAT WAS HOT 🥵🥵🥵🥵 5⭐️
Incubus Dreams By Maeve Black 4.5⭐️ Love the incorporation of erotica!! Yasss!
Into the Thick of it By Clio Evans 3⭐️ The entire time I was reading this, I was picturing Sandra Bullock from the proposal and Groot!
Poison Games by Sienna Varrone 3⭐️
Rooting for Love by Helena Novak and Natalia Prim 2⭐️ I had truly no clue what was going on. Like none. And the ending, totally came out of left field. So confused.
Snap, Snow and Spile by Vera Valentina 3⭐️
The Ogre’s Pet by Cassandra Cross 1⭐️ This was boring 😂😂 like I was just like okay next 😂😂
What Big Teeth By Salem Sinclair 1⭐️ No chemistry. Just not a random hook up that did not make sense for me
Where Darkness Wanders by A.R. Break 4⭐️ This ENTIRE time I was thinking of the Backstreet Boys music video “Everbody (Backstreets Back)” if you know, you know 🤤
Trigger Warnings: I feel like the first thing I should mention is that consent is a very blurry line in a lot of the short stories in this anthology and it also handles sensitive topics like suicide.
*I’ve reviewed the short stories that I've read on their own and the average rating is the one I gave the anthology. My overall review will be first then you’ll find my reviews for each short story I read.
Overall Review: The first short story in this definitely wasn’t the best start for me because I personally did not like it but eventually I did find some short stories that I liked. I think personally a part of the reason I didn’t love this anthology is that I’m not a huge fan of short stories. I prefer series over standalones so I really love when the storyline and world-building are detailed and I can imagine it and live in it. It’s common in these short stories that the storyline is very brief and the world-building doesn't always make sense. And while I do read Monster fucker stories they are not really my favorite. So this is basically a disclaimer that you should not take my opinions too strongly. I think if you really like monster fucker stories and enjoy short stories then you might really love this!
Here are my reviews of the short stories I read: -----------------------------------
A STEP BETWEEN REALMS by Elizabeth Austin
⭐⭐.5/5
Unfortunately, I did not like this at all. This almost feels like it was written by a man. The amount of cum in this one short story is enough for me to feel like throwing up. The smut isn't really that great in my opinion. There's a very brief and unnecessary storyline that was just confusing. This just was not for me.
I hope the next one is better
----------------------------------
BETWEEN HEAVEN & EARTH by YD La Mar
⭐⭐.5/5
I did like this one more than the last. But not enough to increase my rating. There's a scene where the love interest forces himself on the mc without her really indicating she wanted it that made me seriously uncomfortable. Again the storyline is also pretty flawed (not that I expect elaborate world-building in a short story but it definitely could've been better).
-----------------------------------
CAPTURED BY THE WOLVEN: SWEET MONSTERS by L.V. Lane
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
I actually really liked this one! The smut is so good and the storyline is so well rounded! There's a solid backstory and worldbuilding even though it is mostly smut. I would say the only unanswered question is where did Ivy's mother go? And it should also be noted that consent is a slippery slope here. I was losing hope for this anthology but this saved it
-------------------------------------
CAUGHT BY THE WEREWOLF by Lillian Lark
⭐⭐⭐.5/5
This is the best one I've read so far. I like that there's a thought out storyline and that Bel and Jack actually get to know each other even if they knew they were mates from the start
-------------------------------------
FOXING by Ashley Bennett
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Remember when I said the last story was my favorite? I take it back. THIS WAS PERFECT. FEM-DOM?? SIGN ME UP. AKARI IS SO FREAKIN HOT I WOULD LET HER DO UNHOLY THINGS TO ME. THE SMUT WAS SO GOOD. JUST ✨WOMEN✨ I WOULD LOOVE TO READ THE CONTINUATION OF THIS
-------------------------------------
FROM THE DEPTHS by C. Rochelle
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
This actually had such a great and unique concept! I loved this, it's well written and there's pretty great worldbuilding. I think a full book about Konstantin and Margo's story would be pretty good!
