Lured by the Dusk

Rate this book
The Pied Piper meets Dracula in this gothic-inspired dark fantasy romance.

When misfortune befalls Tanith, she goes to live with her aunt and uncle, far from everything she knows.

Suffocated by the restrictions of her new life, Tanith plans a tomb robbery to finance her escape.

But when Tanith enters the crypt, she awakens a beast of a man. Tales call him the piper. An immortal with no heart, driven by vengeance.

As punishment for her crime, he demands her hand in marriage.

Aware he’s using her as leverage, Tanith plots to secure her freedom once and for all. Even though she’s inexplicably attracted to her dangerous, devilish husband.

Just as they grow close, Tanith uncovers the truth about the piper’s past and an unsettling agenda that will shatter their future.

When he goes too far, she’ll have to make an impossible choice. But no matter what she does, someone will pay the price with death.

Objectively good? Nah.
Hot? Yes.

Do fantastical and paranormal creatures have some sort of involuntary response to stress that consists of pointing at the first mortal woman they see and yelling "Agghhh, you! You will be my wife! The universe demands it!!!" ?

This was one of the most boring books I've read in awhile. The relationship was not believable at all. You didn't get any real description of the characters, and I never felt any attachment towards them.

This was such a great, easy read! I really loved everything! The world building was enough to make me think it was an epic fantasy, but not too much that I was missing parts of the plot. I do wish there would have been more talk on the Creators, magic-thralls, and meeting the King of Hearts, but I knew going into it it would be strictly about Oren and Tanith.
I'll definitely be reading more of Angela's books!

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

The book begins with Tanith who is sneaking into a crypt to steal artifacts to pay her way out of the place she despises - away from her uncle.

Lured by the dusk was a quick read for me personally, I enjoyed the dark fantasy side of things and how The Piper was portrayed so dark and evil until up to the last moment when everything comes to light and we see the evilness in the ordinary people.

I liked the steamy moments in the book, and we’ve got a couple of tropes such as forced proximity, forced marriage, and enemies to lovers. I liked the sort of dark romance – Tanith is being forced to stay with The Piper and slowly she falls in love with him since this is a stand-alone novel their love grows pretty quickly so there isn’t much build-up but more like fast forward.

I liked the world-building and the way things were described to us, the spells The Piper did and how gruesome some things were, but at the same time how big of a heart he had – the contrast between good and bad was really entertaining and such a fine line between doing good and doing bad and how some things were blurred.

Overall was an entertaining read and fast-paced, I enjoyed a lot the different characters each more unique than the rest.

I saw this book while scrolling on either Facebook or Instagram and came across an ad for it and the cover art blew me away. The characters are beautiful! I ordered a hardcover of it and a few other books of hers right away.

This is a stand-alone, dark romance, enemies-to-lovers slow-burn, that packs a lot of heat! 🥵 It’s about The Devil of Dowler (based on the Pied Piper) and Tanith, a human girl orphaned and sent to live with her aunt and horrible uncle, the Lord of Dowler. Tanith is strong-willed and desperate to get back to her old home she grew up in, Solynn. She can’t afford it so she decides to go grave robbing. She ends up robbing the Devil of Dowler’s grave, awakening a whole slew of new problems for her to deal with… and a castle with a cute new gargoyle pet?!

I give this story 4 stars. There were some grammar and spelling mistakes, but that can almost be expected when self publishing. The book is beautiful, the tale entertaining and it repeatedly surprised me, and the author is a genuinely kind human. I recommend this story for sure. I loved it!

This was my first read by Angela Ford and I loved it! Tanith and Oren were an unlikely pair, but the moment she woke the Piper they were tied! There was an unspoken attraction between them and a need to be wanted and desired for more than they were. As they bind themselves together with a marriage of convenience in which after her Uncle has fallen that she will be set free they begin an alliance of sorts. The more the work to save the kingdom and get to know each other it becomes a question of will the desire for freedom outweigh the desire for the possibility of love

This gothic novel is beautifully written as is the style of Ms. Ford full of descriptions which bring not only the characters to life but the ambience too. Tanith is an orphan who has come to live with her aunt and uncle but was mistreated and wanted to escape and go back to the city. In order to finance her trip she planned on robbing the tomb of the saint much venerated by the villagers however she soon found out her mistake and the big lie which they had all fallen far. Her theft woke up the person who was in the tomb and who turned out to be none other than the inhuman known as the piper and the devil of howler and who brought terror and chaos wherever he was, and he did this through the music he played on his flute. The Piper as punishment for her theft asked for her hand in marriage and of course her uncle betrayed her and married her off to the monster who immediately took her to his desolate castle. However the more Tanith got to know Oren, for that was the piper's name the more she became unsure of who the monster was in this tale of lies and deceit. I really loved this enemies to lovers story and the slow burning romance which takes place between Tanith and Oren. It may be slow burning but the heat is really on. I love the beautiful magical ending too. This is such an enjoyable fantasy novel!

I loved this book so much this author never disappoints me her books are amazing I really am looking forward to the next one. I loved the characters so much especially Tanith and Oren they had such great chemistry you could literally cut it with a knife they just meshed so well together. I loved Tanith for her strength of character and how much she cares about people and she comes to love and care for Oren and so much more. I liked Oren for his determination to free those he cared about I also loved how he eventually came to realize seeing things Tanith's way wasn't so hard it took so much for him to see just what Tanith was starting to mean to him it took awhile for him to see it as a good thing. I loved the plot it started from Tanith wanting to escape her new life only for her to awaken someone who was thought to be a monster for her to only find out that was the furthest thing from the truth. So overall I loved this book and am looking forward to the next one.

First time reading anything with type of detailed content but!!!! The Piper is such a gentle, yet loving character and Tanith works very well with his character as well. With it being a stand-alone, it makes me want more of their story, but with such an ending it works well. You can only fit so much plot in such few pages, so I understand that as well, but AHHHHH! I love this author so much :)!!

Not much romance

This book read like a fairy tale; like the PG-13 version of the Pied Piper. Not at all what I expected. It moved slowly and was all over the place. Wasn’t my cup of tea.

Passionate

I loved the story definitely more romance than anything. Though the lore was intriguing and the spicy bits were a bit spicy, there was just a little something that was missing. I will read more in the series though. This was great

Not much romance till the very end. The other aspects of the story greatly overshadowed the romance. More of a supernatural drama that is a creative retelling of the Pied Piper.

Ugh I did like the beginning but it fell really flat for me after that. It felt like the author was just trying to say “important” things that didn’t match the vibe of the story

So I bought the lured by the dusk book box on Etsy, all of the items were great. It’s a simple box but that’s what is so good about it. I am happy with all the items.
The book itself is different than any book I’ve read so far. It’s a better retelling of the Piped Piper. I like books like the blood and series, ACOTAR, etc and this is a great palette cleanser for between long fantasy books. The plot is not overly complex it’s easy to follow and a fun quick read. If you keep that in mind I think you will like it.
There are only a few negatives… there are typos in the hardback copy I bought. I wish there was more illustrations in the book or the illustration that was use be used less. I genuinely love the picture but it’s was so repetitive that it was annoying. More like publishing issues. I love the cover.

Decent

It wasn't bad, but it definitely could have been better, i wish there was another intimacy scene, also it skated over Oren's past. It alluded to things but never explained it which was quite frustrating, we know he was punished for something but we don't learn what it was he had to atone for. At least in the last book it was explained. Also I would have liked to hear more of Oren's perspective, he had very few chapters which irked me. What we know of him is mainly from Tanith's perspective. His chapters offer some insight but little depth. When it comes to Tanith, her development was nice i guess, nothing special but not much to be desired either. I think this book definitely dropped a couple pegs from the first one unfortunately. I think it's a decent book to read to pass time but I doubt it'd be anyone's favorite. I certainly hope the next book is better. Hope this helps!

"the devil on his demon horse with his bride, who wasn’t as reluctant as she should have been."

This book has the best world within a world from the entire series so far. Also...look at the cover, urgh, how gorgeous are these two!😍.I am officially Team Tanith and Oren; Toren? from the Tower Knights Series. The ginger Fallen/Fey/Magic-Thrall hottie and his flute can lure me all the way to hell or whatever that other dimension is called. I've removed my headphones sir, play your tune.

This story makes the first 2 look boring - and they were 4⭐books!

Comeuppance is a theme in all the books so far but Book 2 was repentence and redemption and Book 1 was revenge to facilitate liberation. This book takes those themes and cranks it to 100.

Plot/Storyline/Themes:
Music is such a guiding force in this series and I love that. Book 1, opera vocalists. Book 2, gorgeous cottagecore violinists and book 3 Flutes, Revenge, skulduggery, immortal torture and thievery.

Sigh, I'm over it but just to reiterate - why oh why do the MMC's in this series have 5 pov chapters nestled between the FMC's pov? Is it to keep us interested because okay sure you win. I'm interested AF.

Two Sentences, A Scene or less - Characters:
Tanith is steadfast, strong, wiley, sneaky, orphaned and an abused high society woman trapped in the palace of her tormentor Uncle/Lord Faren of Dowler.

Oren The Devil of Dowler is powerful, intelligent, beautiful, angelic, feral-fey, tall, sexy, vengeful, protective, a freaking healer and my favorite from All the Tower Knights. He is too damn fine. He can turn me into an immortal anytime with his ...ahem... weapon
*Scoot scoot, into the Book Husbands shelf you go. Make friends okay?*

Lord Faren can just drop dead.

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Scene:

CHAPTER 22 &23: The Storm. The Hag. Oren's roar. Blood of the Fallen. Se magnifique!

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes:
🖤 “The dead need their gifts for the afterlife and if we steal from them, especially from a saint, there will be consequences.” (Don't do it Tanith. Did nobody watch The Mummy??? )
🖤 “A bolt of carnal lust went through me again. Why wasn’t my brain working? I should be screaming, begging, not thinking of furious kissing.” (why is this scene so ... hot?😍)
🖤 “This was drastic magic, dangerous, but I’d come back from the dead to win, and this time, I’d go to any extreme to free the thralls.” (Oren determined and darkly enigmatic. Lord have mercy)

Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Concepts:
■The Truth about Oren & King of Hearts
■Pip The Gargoyle😍
■Magic-Thralls
■Unwelcome Guest/Body Snatcher Witch
■Oren's Familiars: especially demon horse
■Immortality Transfer: carnality

I overall enjoyed this book. Angela always has a way with keeping me from getting bored.

This is a Pied Piper retelling so the story is pretty much what leads up to the Piper luring the towns children away to his castle. The story is obviously not the same as the original and there is a love interest.

I got invested. I wanted to figure out what in the hell was going on.

To me it’s very surface level. Not much emotions and inner thoughts. You have it, just not that much. It’s more, this is what’s happening and this is what she’s seeing. Which there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just my preferable preference to have more inner thoughts and heavy detail.

“Sometimes I sabotaged myself with my impulsiveness” When the FMC said that I was like, same girl, same.

There was one point in the novel where the two MC’s had a make-out session by the MMC’s dead wife. 😂 like… was this on purpose or did Angela just forget where they were? 😂 I was a little put off by that.

But everything else was great. The romantic words said by the MMC was so sweet and had me melting. That’s what I enjoy out of a romantic book is not necessarily how much spice there is but the words that are said between the two MC’s.

This was ok. The smut was good, the story was easy to follow but you could definitely tell it was a self publish. There were a few typos but I still enjoyed it. .

I did like the enemies to lovers vibe this book has. The world building was creative and fun and I was able to easily picture the world the author described. The main character Tanith isn't very well described in the book as this is a first person view read. But thankfully there's a picture at the beginning of every. chapter. Which happens to be the same as the cover. Thankfully her counter partner Oren is very well described but again you have a picture to help if you forget what they look like. The magic part of the book was on part to any other magic fantasy book I've read and the dark gorey parts held up. There were times when a transition didn't happen as well as I'd like but I was still invested in the story.

The best part about this was I ordered it from the website and it was signed, came with a beautiful bookmark and art work and the actual book itself without the dust cover is stunning! The pages thenselves are so soft. My ASMR vibes came out every time I turned the page!

Another wonderful book in this series!

Tanith wants to escape her uncle and the castle where she lives in. She needs money for that. One dark night she breaks into the crypt to see if anything of value can be taken. There's plenty, but she doesn't get a chance to grab anything because she gets caught by a man named Piper. The Pied Piper holds her captive but their seems more to him and the city. There are dark powers and secrets. Will she trust and help the Piper or leave to never come back?

Tanith and Oren are a great pair. Since she woke him up they are tied together. First, they can't tolerate each other but slowly they get to know each other. They seems to be a unlikely pair but they fit each other rather well.
I love the world-building. The author creates a fiction world that captures us readers.
I can't seem to get enough of her writing style. Through the dialogue you really find out who the characters are. The different POVs provide a dynamic story.

The only thing what I would like more is the romance but I get that happens only in the middle and end of the story.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE AUDIO BOOK. What moron hired someone with this speech pattern as a narrator? The narrator lifted and trailed her voice after every sentence as if it was a question. It drove me bananas. I had to speed it up as fast as I could hear just to get it over with. I recommend you just get the printed book and have Siri or Alexa read it instead.

As for the story, it was different and I liked it. The story of the Pied Piper was scary and excited. Our main character Tanith is trying to escape her aunt and uncle. I like that she takes her future in her own hands. She’s strong. The bad guys were evil and scary.

This is listed as a book with diverse characters. Unfortunately, nothing in the book leads me to think Tanith the female character is black other than the cover. She sounds like just another white lady to me. . . But maybe the at was just the narrator and her 1980s Valley Girl speech pattern.

TW: Physical abuse, child abuse, sexual assault (implied), attempted sexual assault, death of parents (past), grief/loss, mention of famine and disease, mention of animal death, domestic abuse, arranged marriage, vomiting, animal sacrifice, experimentation, imprisonment, corpse depictions, descriptions of blood and gore, suicide (past), phobia of dogs, self harm? (ritual/healing purposes), magical amputation, kidnapping

Did not expect to read a fantasy romance that was inspired by the Pied Piper and Dracula. This was okay and easy reading and I'd consider picking up other books by Ford.

However, I found on here from Ford's author page that their writing is inspired by JKR, who we do not support here. So I'm hoping that that's from before 2020, that it just hasn't been updated and that Ford doesn't support JKR.

Enjoyed the piper aspect

This was my first book from Angela Ford and I picked I based on the cover and the fact that it was inspired by the Piper. It was quick and easy read, without realizing I was half way through the book.

I enjoyed the story it was fast paced. There were some parts where I would have loved some more information about the characters but it wasn't something that took from the story. The characters were interesting, Tanith is very head strong and makes a great heroine. Oren is one of those characters that you can like from the beginning even though he suppose to the villain.

There are two spicy scenes in here but done with just enough to fuel your imagination. So if spice is not your thing it not graphic. I did the enjoy the ending, which is a bit spicy.

Definitely won't be the last book from Angela Ford.

Lured by the Dusk is the third installment in the Tower Knights series. It was fast paced, a quick and mostly enjoyable read. Though it was predictable (veiled with suspense as Tanith always misinterpreted Oren’s intentions while I, the reader, knew exactly what was happening) I still kept reading to see the end. The world building and intermingling of known tales was unique. Tanith was a strong heroine, her grief added great layers to her, the longing for home was very real. Oren was a little flat in character but the lore surrounding him and the legends which captured the city were interesting. The prose is nice but it could have highly benefitted from a thorough line edit. The mistakes weren’t enough to completely take me out of the story but present enough for me to notice and stumble over. Overall I’m glad to have read this and am looking forward to the next installment.
