The role of Veil Keeper wasn’t one I’d been groomed for, but now that I’ve found the grimoire, it’s time to embrace my fate.
I’m ready to take a stand, expose my adversary, and make him pay for the destruction he’s wrought.
If only it was that easy.
Every secret I uncover challenges everything I thought was true. What I find is a betrayal greater than I imagined.
Unsure who to trust, I have to place my faith in an unlikely ally when the veil is threatened and shadows spill into our realm.
With time running out, the need to reclaim my mates and anchor myself to the mortal world is more dire than ever. The danger around us is unrelenting, and I’m the only one who can repair the rift between realms.
As the world ignites around us, only one thing is certain. My mates and I will do anything to be together, and if we burn, we burn as one.
Harper Wylde is a bestselling paranormal romance and urban fantasy author who lives in the countryside of Pennsylvania. As a wife and mother of three young children, she spends her days chasing after little ones and making notes all around her house about magical worlds, strong heroines, and the men who would do anything to protect them. When she’s not writing, she can often be found curled up with a good book, binge watching reruns of The Vampire Diaries, or gaming with her boys.
I enjoyed this series. It was well-written; the plot was strong, the characters were well-defined, and the world-building was fantastic.
However, everything was not perfect, and it messed with my enjoyment. I got really tired of the constant issues within the harem. In book one, we're told that Lorn desperately needs her mate bonds to stay alive and save the world. That is a pretty firm and definite statement. How many times did Lorn almost die because she didn’t have her mate bonds? A lot.
Throughout the entire series, until the last book, her mates were still fighting against the bond.
Dason pushed Lorn away and refused to even interact with her unless it was to dictate or try to control her. Dason spent three books entirely rejecting Lorn. He was mean and hurtful for too long. I have trouble forgiving him for all of that. We never even learn why he acted that way except for some offhanded remark about his mother.
Kota completely avoided Lorn; he treated her with scorn and disdain if he was forced to interact with her at all. He refused to consider mating her. Kota's constant rejection hurt Lorn a lot. This lasted until the fourth and final book.
Axel loved Lorn but refused to mate with her until his brother, Kota, was there to do it with him. You’d think if he loved her, then Lorn’s life and safety would be a factor. Nope. Apparently, he loves his brother more than his mate or the fate of the entire world. (Clayton, Syler, and Jolon were great mates.)
Finally, Lorna’s bonds were completely severed in this book. Cue more internal harem issues.
I like my books more when problems arise outside the harem.
So here’s my problem: I didn’t enjoy the men’s constant rejection of their mate. This issue took entirely too long to resolve. The fact that Lorn forgave them all so easily really chafed. I also didn’t enjoy the OW drama. All this took away from my enjoyment of the series, hence the 3.5 star rating.
This was a mixed bag for me. Up until 50% this was a solid 4 star read for me and then it went a little downhill. Lorn and her side only succeed in the end because she just always accidentally does the right thing. Triggered by emotions I guess. There is never a plan or a calculated attack by her. She just seems to be stumbling through battle and accidentally survives and triggers her little veil powers. That part wasn't proactive and badass enough for my taste. I also didn't get why everyone got their own mating scene but Chayton. I would have preferred either him getting one or more people not getting one. This felt a little bit like that character was the author's step child that they didn't enjoy writing about. I'm also assuming that she could read the grimoire in the second part of the book because she got fully mated? This isn't actually clarified, so I found that part a bit unclear. Aaaand last but not least...I found the idea of a happily ever after by writing a pregnancy epilogue so...random? Not once did I feel like this was something she aspired to or even mentioned. Definitely not in this book. I would have honestly preferred a HEA without that part. It's not a necessity for a HEA and she just didn't seem to be the type and even if she was, it wouldn't be after 6 months. I mean, come on...It's hard to get to know one person sufficiently over the span of 6 months and she supposedly gets that done with 7? I doubt it.

"Lying there with my mates, my heart was weightless as I melted into the mattress at the end of the night. I gently stroked a hand over my stomach and pictured the future. Each of us had survived a difficult childhood in some way, but that would only make us give this little life, this little light, that much more love. None of us knew what to expect, but as Chayton would say, the fun was in the journey, every beautiful, difficult piece of it. Getting here had been its own journey. But every hardship, every challenge, had been worth it to get to where we were now. This was what life should be. This is what we’d fought so hard for. What we’d continue to fight for. This was family. Life. Love. Home. This was everything."
Adoreeeei a leitura!
The War and the Deceit series, claro). A história foi muito dinâmica, adorei os relacionamentos slow-burn, e eu gosto muito de um final com gravidez quando eu também gosto do casal (ou casais?). Recomendo muito a leitura para quem gosta de romances de harém reverso.

This is a decent series, but I thought book 3 was boring and in the 4th I was already skimming to get to the end. Again I had issues with the development of relationships in the harem because of a lack of time and space. Some of the men weren't well-developed and I felt they didn't have enough attention, namely Syler, Jolon, Tye, and even Kota, and Dason. That's the problem with harems that are way too big. What's the need for 7 mates? In the beginning, I thought that 4 was the perfect number. One for each book. It felt to me that adding more mates was pointless because they didn't all have the same depth in the relationship. Tye was so meh for me because he came up out of nowhere. It would have been better if he had shown up at the beginning.
The plot was boring, too. I wasn't excited to see the conclusion. Also, I wanted Mara to suffer more. I wanted Dason to finish her tbh lol, it would have been poetic justice. I kept wanting more but was left hanging. What's the point of 7 mates without a single group scene? There were hints of MM with Jolon and Syler, but it fell flat. What's the point of mentioning it if it's not going to appear? Idk... I was hoping for more. I would give the whole series 3,5 stars because the first and second books are interesting, the other two not so much.
I wasn’t as disappointed in the ending as I thought I would be. I think it did a nice job of piecing everything together. I think the pacing was my only issue. All of the mating happened so quick. I know they had a world to save, but I still felt it could have felt a little more special. Then our final battle scene that we have been waiting for since end of book 1 only lasted about 5 pages. With that being said, I’m not unhappy with the ending either. I thought everything that happened made sense and was definitely cool to read! I still love Lorn and her mates so much. I really think she’s one of my favorite FMCs. She had her emotions in check even though everything was against her from the beginning, but she rose above it. She never stepped down from a challenge, which included fighting through her mate’s keeping their distance at times. She was very smart and I loved how she thought through her issues. Overall, I am very happy with this series! It was really fun to read and definitely kept me entertained. I will definitely be picking up more reads by this author!
The end of this was chaotic. Did she manage to loop all the loose ends back together? Yes…. Was it neat and engaging? Not so much…
This followed the typical RH formula. It’s nothing new, we’ve seen the same winning algorithm over and over, it it wasn’t as well done as even other series by this author. I still like and enjoy her stories; her writing is a little less skillful in this series, particularly in the 2nd book; but the story was interesting and resolution satisfying. I wish the MLs would have been more creative, or if there was fewer of them and the 7 different men were condensed into 4. There is also two other men plus the wold pack leader that felt important but turned out to be throwaway.
Will I read more from this author? Yes, yes I will. It obviously was entertaining and easy to consume, I read 4 books in 3 days, but it’s filler between heavier reads.
I feel like I’d been waiting for this book for so long. I wish there was more and that the story didn’t end here. I love Lorn and her mates. I loved seeing Lorn come into her power, overcome hardships, and gain confidence in herself, all while trying to survive the darkness that tried to consume her in so many ways. And even though some of her mates were a bit stubborn, I loved every single one. Seeing them come together as a pack for Lorn was beautiful. I wish I didn’t have to say goodbye to this series, but I love that we got a glance into Lorn’s future in the epilogue.
Just two things though, I wish Tye had more bonding time with Lorn and the guys seperately. I would have liked to see their relationships grow and become stronger. And, I also feel there should have some sexy group scenes, since their friendship is so strong it would have made the sexy moments even hotter. We only got threesomes in this.
Otherwise, though I definitely recommend reading this series, especially to the readers who love pack dynamics and fated mates.
I spent 3 books shocked to come across an HR that doesn't make me stressed or angry about letting one of the guys out and then... I get to this one. Still very good, and still 5 stars but hey... there's so much neglect with the finalization of their relationship, everything is so rushed. You didn't get a chance to taste anything and it left a feeling that something was missing on every page.
Harper did it again. I loved every second of this series and craved more when it was finished. The only downfall is that it was shorter than I would have liked but it still was great. I could have continued with this series for a few more books and been perfectly happy. Can't wait to see if Em gets her own story.
A new favourite series!! I fell in love with a new set of book boyfriends. Though I think Sylar is my favourite. This slow burn RH steamed up nicely. Action a plenty and a few curveballs thrown on.
Thankfully I read the series once it was complete as I don't know if I could've coped with the cliffhangers. Lol. My heart rate rose a few times anyhow.
I love the series I read it all the way through from book 1/4 in my spare time lol it was great and the characters are so good and they all had a story to tell threw the whole series I must say I in joyed this a lot keep up the good Wk wi can’t wait for more from you as an author keep going it was worth evey word I read kept me reading to the very end 😀👍
Rising Darkness is the conclusion of Lorn’s story and sees her and her mates taking on the darkness that has been threatening to take over the world. This was a great conclusion to the series, the story is quite fast paced in this book and a lot happens throughout. I fell in love with the characters in this series and enjoyed their journey throughout the books.
I have a read a ton of books in this genre and this series was great! I love supernatural books and the way they're portrayed in this series was very original. The MC was likeable and the men were great. I would definitely suggest this series to be read.
I waited an age for this and it did not disappoint! I loved every bit of it and will probably re read the whole set again now they are all out! Gutted it’s over but chuffed at the same time!
I feel a little sad that this was the last book in Lorn's story. I really loved these characters and hate to be done with them. Also, I feel a little cheated because everything wrapped up so quickly. It was still a great story with a perfect hea.
Wow. What an enjoyable story. So many twists and turns. While the first book was slow for sex... the last three has plenty. Great many twists and turns. Worth the read!
Man what a great story. I really enjoyed this book. The characters were so well thought out and the world building was very good. I would recommend this book and this series.
A lot of paranormal romance doesn’t have enough balance between the tragedy/anguish and feel good. Harper Wylde has managed to accomplish that, keeping me hooked but not traumatized lol. Plenty of heat, lots of laughs and sincerely - this series was awesome!
This was a satisfying conclusion to the series, answering questions like who the masked man was, who her final mate was, as well as the obvious who's the bad guy. Overall an enjoyable series
What an amazing end to a series, I loved the epilogue. I did feel the book as a whole felt abit rushed and a lot more could of been added into it but it was still such a great read. I’m really sad that the series is over
I was here for it tho because the series piqued my interest . I can’t wait to see what other series I’ll like from this author . The ember series was pretty awesome too. I completely forgot wylde co-wrote it. Anyways good read!
Finishing the series was a good way to start the New Year. When the bonds broke, literally felt my own heart break as well. I was so happy and relieved when she learned how to reignite the bonds again with all of them.
Amazing ending I loved this whole series and I may not have slept alit but I read the whole series it 2 days , The character growth and plot is fab would definitely recommend giving this a go.
Series review: These were exactly what I want from a paranormal reverse harem. Good heroine, enjoyable and distinguishable heroes, interesting world, engaging plot. I like a harem that builds along the way vs all at once, too. The ending felt slightly rushed but otherwise no real complaints.
I was hooked from the first book to the last. The fmc was kick butt and powerful. I loved all the mmcs I couldn't choose my favorite since they all are. If you haven't read this you are missing out.
