After reading this book for a while (maybe 25% or so) I thought that, while an interesting story that I wanted to continue, it certainly wasn't a 5-star book. But as I got more into it, I just couldn't put it down - a sure sign of a 5-star book for me! There were a lot of characters to keep track of and at times I said to myself.... "Max? Who's Max"? (or whatever character) ;-) But that was rare, and I really liked all the characters (well, except for Millie, of course).

I think it was a very well-written book and very engrossing. I was wondering how it would end, and found it to be satisfying. Still begged the question just where did the portals come from? Never addressed and not even commented on, which I thought was strange. It was certainly an entertaining book and I will look for more by Mr. Cunningham.

I never expected there to be a sequel to Yestertime. The first book ended on a pretty definitive note. When I came across this, I wanted to immediately read it and it didn't disappoint.

This picks up pretty much right where the first book left off. There are more characters and there is more world-building. It is just as fast-paced as the first book and the characters are just as compelling. I did think the language was a it simpler than I expected, but it didn't really detract from the story.

The ending for this one is more open-ended and I wouldn't bet against the author writing another sequel.

Overall, I enjoyed this a lot. It feels good to read a shorter, simpler book after Summer of Night.

Time Traveling Takes on New Aspects

Interesting story.Twists and turns kept me interested. It doesn’t have a cliff hanging ending, but hints at a third book. I’ll probably try to find it.

The Time Travelers: A Noir History

This is good, but its dark. What should have been a fun ride through history (and perhaps the future) turned out to be anything but that for everyone involved. There are a lot of not-very-nice people and a lot of lies. All the loose ends are not sewn up in this novel and many of them are left hanging. Most of the main characters die. Murdered. By time travelers. It's a good story and I hope with my warning you won't be as shocked as I was. It ended in just the right place and at just the right time.

Adventurous time travel bk

I like the sequel better than the 1st. Will you do a third? Very good storyline, eliminators vs the unauthorized (and those with knowledge). Poor Simone. She had the epitome of a bad time travel experience. Millie is an interesting newcomer to the group. Hanna didn't like her. Ray questioned her. An 82yr old wanting to explore before she died, what did she hav to lose. Time travel has its pros and cons yet it peaks my curiosity and if given the chance...would I?

Interesting. A good read.

I had a good time with this book. Good, strong, likable characters. All with interesting backstories. And one with a devastating story to tell. I truly enjoyed it and was sad to see it end. But… there’s definitely room for another in this series even though it ends quite satisfyingly. Wish more series installments ended this cleanly…that way if the writer decides they’re done….it’s done…if they want to go on…it’s a nice clean start for the new book.

A Very Different Read For Me.

I really enjoyed this book. Something I don’t normally read. All the characters, from Ray to Natalie, Hanna, Hal & Simone have great backgrounds and history. The time travel is written very well. I love the relationships that develop through the story.
I am a reviewer that doesn’t usually give too much information about the full story, I don’t like spoilers. Just believe that if you have read the first book, you will enjoy this even more so.

Interesting Concept-Sophomoric Writing

Definitely not Stephen King, but there’s only ONE of him. Very interesting premise, but poorly developed characters and superficial plot. Too many “deus-ex-machina” resolutions.
I stopped about page 150 and skipped to the end. Won’t look for any more.

I read the first book "Yestertime" in April of 2021 and thoroughly enjoyed it and for some reason never followed through with book two. However, the "Yestertime Effect" popped up on line while searching as I do a lot for yet another time travel book. I decided to purchase it but thought I'd have a refresher course and ended up reading the first book again, so here we are now, reviewing book two.
I'm giving it 4 stars as I don't think it was as good as number one but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. Yes, there are quite a lot of characters to remember and a lot of time between their birthdates which adds to the many paradox's that enfold within these people who eventually become a fellowship of sorts. Well worth a read and if you're like me you won't regret moving on to book number three.

I enjoyed the first book in the series; I thought it was an intriguing premise. However, this one did not captivate me as much. It seemed like all they did was run away, constantly going back and forth in time to escape from the assassins or eliminators. The story didn't seem to advance much, as they lacked a clear goal or endgame. It felt like watching a hamster running on its wheel, going hell for leather but not getting anywhere.
They kept catching up with old friends and then moving on to another place. If it weren't for the portal, they might as well have traveled in caravans and called themselves the travelers. Oh, wait, they did. They may as well have been gypsies. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

A bit confusing because of the introduction of additional characters and rehashing book 1.

The story reminded me of being with a group looking for a treasure, except this treasure hunt has no hints as to location. There are mercenaries who work for the 3 letter branch of government, which was in shadows. What I missed most was the science in SciFi & character development for the core or original travelers. Except for 1860s AZ location, the author did not describe the natural environment or culture of the Era.
I did enjoy the pace and the easy reading, making it a relaxed reading. Inwoukd recommend this for a +14 reader.

When I reviewed Book 1 of this series, I wrote that the book started well, but then went downhill, both in writing style and content. This book doesn't even have the good first part. The story is disjointed, inconsistent and simplistically written. The time-travelling project, having been cancelled in the future, apparently gets re-activated in the future-future, then cancelled again (there's a third book, in which it presumably gets re-re-activated (?)). It's all confusing and absurd. An 82-year-old thief time traveller and an assassin, who has an epiphany that he's doing the wrong thing are two of the less-likely characters, although they're all 2D anyway. I won't be buying Book 3...

This series is fun for escapist, easy reading. The story picks up where the first ended. I won't go into a summary of story - that is easily found elsewhere. Characters are pretty surface level, but it's still an enjoyable tale as a gang of time travelers (some accidental) try to figure out which is the best time for them to live in, all the while attempting to foil assassins sent from the NSA of the future who've decided to shut down time travel for safety reasons. How much do I like the concept? Enough to move on to book 3 in the series.

review of Yestertime Effect series book 2

Yesterday morning I bought this book about 8:00 AM. It is now 7:00 PM the next day. In an hour I will be staring book 3. That’s 3 novels in 6 days. I guess that means I think this series if great. The kind you can’t put down. Not all books do that for me. Again great cast of characters, surprises at every turn, a plenty of excitement. I’m looking forward to the conclusion

This one is a little less satisfying than the first one and reads a lot like a typical second act: bringing together the protagonists and getting them ready for the thrilling resolution in act three. At least I hope so!

The challenges our heroes and heroines face have been illuminated and now all that remains is to resolve them. Not as much a conclusion like the first book offered, it ends a bit too abruptly on a kind of “calm before the storm” note.

Good!

Fun trilogy about time-travel entwined with some action and mystery. I wish the author would have dug deeper in history, as I feel some parts (period of time, I mean), were treated a little too lightly. But as it isn't a “hard science-fiction” story at all, it was nonetheless really enjoyable.

This book is a solid entry in the Yestertime series. The surviving characters from the first book are included, along with a variety of key new ones. The tone and narrative continue, with new reveals about the overall scope of the total story. This book is not a stand alone. It does move the story along, but not all that much. It sets things up for the final(?) book.

Persevered because, as with the first book in the series, there us the thread of a good story here. However, the plot line is so linear and contrived, and the writing, frankly, awful. I likened it to Janet and John for the last book, and that's an accurate description.

"I did this. They did that. We talked a bit. "

No more for me.

continuation of book 1

I have read book 1 and find this one a consistent continuation. The how time travel portals work is getting more complicated but the author explains it well, including repeating information but in a different way. I like the pacing. It’s fast and slow so it keeps the novel interesting.

Big improvement from book 1

The intrigue of one-way time portals is continued, but the characters are better developed, and logical framework involving time paradoxes is dealt with. The entire phenomenon of the time travel project is much more satisfying than it was in the first book.

Gimme a break! I made it to 25% but could not take any more. Bad writing—very bad writing as in repeating points over and over. Bad plotting as in rain just happens to expose something when a character walks across the yard. Bad characterizations—not only are they all clichés, they behave like 13 year olds.

Another page turner

As with the first book in the series a storyline that draws you in and you just want to know what happens next. Love Andrew's style of writing. He creates a great atmosphere and you feel like you are there with the characters. Can't wait to read the next book.

Engaging, Time Travel

I am enjoying this series of time travel novels. I just finished 2 of 3 books. Just taking a moment to say that I enjoyed this so far, and am starting next in series. Time travel without a lot of scientific jargon to wade through.

a mix of good people and bad

the on the run group grows larger with interesting trips to relate. at last the scary aspects of always adapting to a random place are explored. I imagine all of the bad experiences to be in the pastt would outweigh the excitement. Well done.

grabs you from the very first chapter!

This is a very worthy sequel to Volume 1 of this series. There is much action, heartache and nearly constant change amid the time travelers adventures. I can’t wait to see where things go next.

like crack

This series has me hooked. Every spare minute in reading these books. The characters are all well-thought out and very well developed. They are in my head, rent-free. I find myself thinking “How would Hal handle this?” Hah. Very addictive.

Great sequel

Ray and Natalie continue their travels and hope to meet up with Hal, Alex and Hanna at some point. This story is somewhat predictable, but the journey is not. I enjoyed this one just about as much as the first.

How Interesting!

Not just time travel - relationships, trust, subterfuge. Love the description of different eras, different continents, how they get around and stay hidden for the most part. I can't imagine the stress. I have so many questions. Fantastic series!
