Rate this book
As leaders, we face difficult questions each day:

- What kind of leader do I want to be?
- How can I stay true to myself, while also meeting the expectations of others?
- How best can I handle the most challenging leadership situations?
- How can I accept this uncomfortable and sometimes painful truth: no matter what I do, and no matter how hard I try, someone will likely be upset with my choices and actions?

Expansive Impact helps answer these questions and will empower you to handle the stickiest leadership situations, feel more confident as a leader, and create significant positive change without relying on outside forces or external circumstances. With fresh language, powerful inquiries, and a nuanced exploration of the often opposing tensions we hold as leaders, this book is a compelling and insightful guide to improving your leadership and your life.

I read this book way too many times to count ;) - and am grateful that it is beginning to make its way into the world! If you have had the opportunity to read it, either as an early reader, or because you received your copy early, I would be grateful to hear your thoughts!

A quick summary of the book for those who are interested in checking it out:

Expansive Impact will empower you to handle the stickiest leadership situations, feel more confident as a leader, and create significant positive change without relying on outside forces or external circumstances. With fresh language, powerful inquiries, and a nuanced exploration of the often opposing tensions we hold as leaders, this book is a compelling and insightful guide to improving your leadership and your life.

It leads readers through the Six Invitations of Expansive Impact, which are:

Be Compassionate: Lead with Love
Be Conscious: Lead from Within
Be Clear: Lead in Relationship to Reality
Be Curious: Lead by Looking for Clues
Be Courageous: Lead with Truth from the Heart
Be Creative: Lead with Agility

It is the leadership guidebook that I wish I would have had many years ago during my toughest leadership situations, and trickiest conundrums. It is a combination of stories, reflections, and tactical tools that we can all use on our leadership journeys.

The process of bringing this book into the world ended up being one of my toughest professional projects to date - which meant that it was a great opportunity to tune into, and live out, the ideas in the book.

Thanks for reading this review and for your interest in the book. For anyone who pre-orders, there are a number of free resources available here: https://www.zingcollaborative.com/exp.... And, there is an additional online library of related resources, which you will find referenced within the book itself.

Thank you again for being part of the Expansive Impact Community!

Warmly,
Sarah

This has to be the most real book about leadership I’ve come across. It’s not your typical “rah-rah” how to be a great leader tome. It’s not the stoic books that are so popular (IDK why). Those books are outdated in my view. This book is a guide for leading in our current, MESSY times. How to handle sticky situations, difficult employees, and look inside yourself for intuitive answers.

It’s about leading from a place of love, not fear. Maybe that sounds woo-woo to some people, but shouldn’t our work be a source of joy in our lives? Isn’t there room for that given all the turmoil in our world?

There are stories (in fact, I LOVE how Sarah Young described people and stories and not made it all about herself). One story about the boss who never said hi to his assistant in 25 years when he walked by her desk made me remember an executive leader at a former company. I would pass her in the hall, say hello, and she wouldn’t reply. That’s soul-crushing to a young professional. I thought there must be something wrong with me. What would it have taken from her if she’d even nodded? A second?

The leaders & managers of companies big and small would be leaps and bounds ahead of their peers for reading this book and applying even a handful of these exercises.

P. 196 about the clues you can look for as to why you team member isn’t changing their behavior is worth the price of the book alone. I’ll be printing that one out for my wall.

In Expansive Impact, Sarah draws you in early with her delightful stories and impactful takeaways.
I especially appreciate the section titled “The power of good morning”. It’s a great reminder of how important it is to connect with each other on a daily basis.
Sarah gives a fresh perspective on being an empathetic leader, and how important the small moments are with the people we interact with.
Expansive Impact is definitely one of my favorite leadership books, and I already refer back to it when facing coaching challenges, and have given copies to my colleagues.
Sarah has a deep understanding of, and genuine love for, people, which is beautifully reflected in Expansive Impact. It’s so good!

What a breath of fresh air!! This book is gorgeous, inside and out. Every page is filled with powerful stories and coaching strategies for finding peace amidst the turbulent seas of leading others, particularly during such divisive times in our society. Sarah's warmth and wisdom shines through every page, and the exercises at the end of each chapter are deeply thought-provoking. This is a book I will return to frequently, and I know I'll gain new insights every single time. It's already full of dog-eared pages and highlights, and that's just my first pass!

I loved the practical leadership tools available in this book. I related to many of the examples as well. I particularly liked the honest approach and explanation that despite doing all of these things well, it may not always be received well depending on what the other person brings to the table.
I will definitely be processing what I have read and going through my notes and reading again.

This book has some of the most relevant anecdotes for modern leadership scenarios that I’ve encountered. The examples are specific and nuanced enough to feel realistic and so many resonated with experiences I’ve had in my career and life. Sarah has a way of sparking new insights through her words and questions in a way that feels both validating and inspiring. My copy is full of highlights and bookmarked pages to refer back to again.

This book was just what I needed - practical suggestions to improve my daily management experience!

The modern workplace is chuck full of myriad novel challenges from remote/hybrid team work to rampant political polarization. The author tackles these challenges directly with time-tested advice - get to know your team, forgive yourself for mistakes, make time to clear your head, lead with a firm hand but remain compassionate to your colleagues, customers, and counterparts. Young meshes together older management ideas from Stephen Covey and Dale Carnegie with modern workplace success experts like Adam Grant and Csikszentmihalyi in a brilliant book that is just what the doctor ordered during a time of rapid transition in the workplace.

Young uses meaningful personal anecdotes to show how management is a personal craft which requires practice and flexibility. She mentions good ideas to improve your focus and inner calm, but she doesn’t pretend that all of our problems can be solved with meditation or the next wellness craze.

The booked is grounded in thoughtful self-reflection and provides practical suggestions that apply to the first year new hire or the veteran manager nearing retirement.
