For me, Instead, By Grace by William Wright was a bit of an enigma. I don’t normally read or review non-fiction, but this one just caught my interest – bigtime. I was mesmerized. I have struggled with how to write a fitting review. However, in the epilog, William Wright said exactly what I would have said about the book but in better words. ‘Instead, By Grace is an essay of personal struggle, an event of spiritual warfare, and a represents an example of the greater human struggle between good and evil. Racked with fear and unable to sort through the deceptions and anxiety bundled with it, the search for answers must lead to god…’ The year that William and his wife, Dale Ann, lived through was harrowing. But life had to go on. Children needed to get to swim lessons and hockey games. A relative who could no longer drive had to be taken to the market, the church mission must be attended. Wright captured it all. I have one more observation. Wrights writing style was startling. There was an unexpected grace and poetry in the prose. It reminded me of the style of some of my favorite renaissance authors. He captured the events in a manner that was always upbeat and expecting of a positive conclusion. If the reader were to read the book for nothing more but to enjoy his writing style, it would be worth the time. Jeff Bailey, author of the conspiracy thriller Not On MY Watch (my normal genre.)
The book opens with a crazed man trying to break into the authors' home, which they named the Instead. The author just wants to scare him away, but shoots and wounds the criminal. Because of law enforcement politics in the area, they don't arrive in a timely manner and treat the home-owner as the trouble maker. The book becomes a diary of the couple's dealings with police, terrible weather, children and grandchildren, the court system, cancer treatments, church, helping friends, how to live a spirit-filled life among dark times, and even a mission trip to Rwanda to drill for fresh water. A riveting true story.
A beautifully written first person account of two simultaneous life changing events. I felt as if I was there witnessing the break in at his home while at the same time sharing the trauma and fear brought on by a life threatening disease. Trying to navigate the legal and medical systems of the state of Pennsylvania while still suffering PTSD from the break in made me aware of the fact that I really know nothing about how our legal system actually works for the victims. I read this true story in two days and learned so much about the power of faith and love in times of crisis.
I am one of the authors, this is a true crime story about a home invasion, shooting and recovery. There is a backstory about cancer survival and the justice system. Written for entertainment and to present insights into how the system works.
