Jo Kingsley is having a really bad day, and nothing is going according to plan. After her life goes up in flames—literally—she returns home to Nashville to figure out her next move. Soon after she arrives, Jo finds herself alone in a bar licking her wounds when a knight in a shining leather jacket unexpectedly comes to her rescue. Suddenly, the girl who always has a plan finds herself throwing caution to the wind.
Derek Knights is longing to be free—from everyone’s expectations and from a past he can’t seem to escape. During a night out to clear his head, he meets a beautiful woman who makes him feel seen for the first time. When she disappears without leaving so much as a glass slipper behind, he’s sure he’ll never see her again—until he shows up to dinner at his friend’s house and she’s standing in the kitchen.
When Jo and Derek reconnect, they give each other the courage to be their true selves, and their lives start to change for the better. But when Derek makes a life-altering decision and is ready to go all-in with Jo, will she be ready to take the leap into an uncertain future, or will she fall back on old habits and the life she once thought she wanted? Long Way Home, the third installment of the Midnight in Dallas series, is a story about the detours we take when becoming the people we’re meant to be and the pieces of ourselves that we leave behind along the way.
Melissa Grace is the author of the Midnight in Dallas romcom series, and her freelance work has been featured in publications like Medium, Thought Catalog, and The Mighty. She resides just outside of Nashville, Tennessee with her husband and many fur children. When she’s not writing, she can often be found reading or curled up in her bed with snacks like a trash panda, avoiding simple tasks because of her anxiety.
I gotta be honest, I wasn’t loving this the first 15 or so percent, but it really changed and exceeded my expectations. The writing was very well-done, the story was interesting, and I want to read more from this world.
I think the characters went through a metamorphosis. Almost all of them lol. I loved that. I wasn’t really liking Jo, or even Derek, especially Dallas, not that they were horrible people, only that they felt a little flat and I wasn’t connecting with them. That all changed tho. Their struggles and conflict felt believable, relatable. We all strive to be the best we can be to make our parents proud, we all want to be recognized and acknowledged by them. But we all know unconditional love isn’t always a sure thing for some people and their parental relationships. 😫
There was lots of growth between Derek and Jo. We saw a lot of day-to-day activities/behaviors-which I’m obsessed with- and it just made their romance feel more down-to-earth and realistic.
This wasn’t a big issue, or scene, in this book, but I notice it in any media source: Why is it that the survivors always have to forgive their abuser? I want to read about how they go on with their life, finding happiness, but not absolving their abuser of their horrific actions. Especially for those that never asked for or deserve it. No one should think less of the survivor for not wanting to forgive them 😭
I liked the ending except for one part and I realllllly wished it didn’t happen.
This is a stand-alone, ends with a HEA, and a glimpse at who the next couple will be (but I’m not gonna spoil that 🤫).
The Midnight in Dallas series holds such a special place in my heart. I love these characters and the world Melissa has built. I was lucky enough to beta-read Long Way Home and I fell in love with Jo and Derek’s story immediately. Stay tuned for a more detailed review closer to pub day!!
REVIEW: Long Way Home is the third installment in the Midnight in Dallas series by Melissa Grace. The book follows TV reporter Jo, who is struggling to live up to her father's legacy, and band member Derek, who isn't feeling the joy of being in the band anymore. With common struggles, the pair lean on each other for emotional support and along the way, find a kind of love that is worth holding onto.
I like to joke that Melissa writes her books knowing exactly what is going on in my life. When I read Home Again, I was mourning the loss of my mother. This time around, Long Way Home has helped me examine what I want out of life and if veering off the path I've always seen for myself is worth it in the end.
Jo is an incredibly relatable heroine. Living in the world of plans and preparation, she hates surprises and is a 2w3 if I've ever seen one. Her struggle of not feeling like she is enough, not only for her father but just in general, really shook me and helped me cope with similar struggles.
Derek comes out of nowhere on Halloween and quietly sweeps Jo off her feet. He is incredibly loving and passionate, always trying to show Jo her worth. I loved their meet cute and their amazing chemistry bled through into some super steamy scenes. Sweet dog Izzy provided comic relief and stole the show.
“Growth is rarely comfortable.”
It felt reassuring to see someone starting over with their career later in life, and having the courage to lean into the hard, instead of staying unhappy in a comfortable life. The book normalized it being okay to want something different in life, even when others around you might not totally understand.
Seeing all the former characters and couples strongly immersed into the story gave me all the feels. Long Way Home has the same sense of found family, even with new characters added. Melissa doesn't shy away from tackling heavier topics such as alcoholism and toxic parental relationships, and as always, she handles them with deep emotion and care.
Another beautiful love story set in the Midnight in Dallas universe. This book features band member Derek and Katie's best friend Jo. Both Derek and Jo are struggling to follow their happy and take the chance on career changes, knowing that they'd be disappointing family members.
I really LOVED how Jo and Derek meet randomly in a bar, have a great night and then leave things up to fate only to be reunited at their Nashville friend's Sunday dinner. Their motorcycle, picnic date with rescue dog Izzy was the ultimate in cuteness overload too!
Full of all the trademark humor, found family and swoony moments, this latest book delivered all the feels and has me eagerly awaiting Katie and Dallas's story next! If you haven't had the pleasure of reading a Melissa Grace book yet, take this as a sign to change that ASAP!
Much thanks to Melissa Grace for an early digital arc in exchange for my honest review.
Once again, this series delivers another soft, heartfelt romance with a beautiful message of found family.
Beginning with news reporter Jo Kingsley experiencing the worst day imaginable, she heads back home to Nashville. There she meets Derek, bass player for Midnight in Dallas, and immediately the two share a special connection. The open vulnerability with each other was so refreshing to see. And little do Jo and Derek know, fate has plans to entwine their lives!
Through guidance, encouragement, and healing, I loved seeing Derek and Jo push each other to live authentically. As they make tough decisions that'll inevitably change their lives, my heart really ached for both of them.
While each romance is a standalone, I love the importance the secondary characters bring to each story. I continue to feel invested in all of them! Because of that, I encourage you to start from book one, Home Is Where You Are, to truly feel the essence of this great group of friends. It's a fantastic series!
(heat level: a few open-door scenes, explicit details)
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
There is just something about Melissa Grace's writing that makes me unable to stop reading until the end. I sat down to start it and the next time I looked, I was already 40% through, though it felt like no time at all had passed.
Long Way Home is a beautiful story about two characters with difficult pasts coming together to help heal one another, as well as help each other become the people they're scared to be. It was insta-love without being cringey - the relationship felt so natural and the pacing was done perfectly. I loved both Jo and Derek so much... I really didn't think Melissa could top Ella and Cash for me, but somehow, she did it.
I do think the Midnight in Dallas series should be read in order, so if you haven't had a chance to read Home Is Where You Are and/or Home Again, you should definitely pick them up before Long Way Home is released on October 4th.
Thank you so much to the author for providing me with an eARC. Can't wait to have a physical copy in my hands sooooon!!
This is the third book in the series and I just cannot get enough of Derek and Jolene, and their meet cute - their characters are just so lovable and I find myself emotionally invested rooting for their HEA - and wait til you read about Izzy. I loved the writing - like the others, when I start it’s so hard to stop. I just need to know how their stories come together. Melissa Grace always adds a hefty back story that will have you thinking these characters are your friends. The readers become completely immersed in their struggles, emotions, and matters of the heart. There are some tender moments, but Melissa Grace writes them with sensitivity and care.
I absolutely enjoyed this book, and the entire series just keeps getting better and better. Way to go Melissa Grace!
When I received this ARC, Mel told me she thought I was going to love Derek. Well, she couldn’t be more right. I loved Jo and Derek, but he has made a home for himself inside my heart.
The pacing of this book was my favorite when it comes to romance books. There’s a big difference between instalove (cringey, unrealistic, anticlimatic) and fastburn, and this book is the biggest proof. Jo and Derek taking a leap and getting to know each other after being hurt because they felt a connection was beautiful and healing. Jo deserved to find Derek after everything she went through in Chicago, and Derek deserved to find Jo (and Izzy!!!) after suffering so much through his childhood and thinking he wouldn’t be able to love in a healthy way.
I couldn’t put this beautiful story down. Mel’s writing always gets to me in the best way: her flawed characters remind me that that’s how life is supposed to be and that making mistakes is okay as long as we learn. I missed this found family A LOT. If you love tight group of friends, you need to start this series. This book sets up the next one in the series and I can’t wait to know what is going on after that mini teaser in the epilogue. Also, I love Luca so much and need him to be happy as soon as possible 🥺.
This beauty will be out in a few months, on OCTOBER 4th, and it’s going to be the perfect Fall read!
This is the third installment of the Midnight in Dallas series! This is Derek’s story! It did take me a little while to get into but that was more because of my busy schedule and inability to stay awake lol. This was an ARC that I was lucky enough to get chosen for. It will be released next month!
I am loving each of these books. They are such easy reads and so heart warming. I love how Derek and Jo meet and I loved how they left it to the universe to let them see each other again.
A lot of us could learn from Jo in this one.. so many of us make our choices based on others expectations of us.. loved seeing her work through all of her stuff with her dad.
Derek and his family issues that we get to learn about broke my heart. He is such a special guy and overcame so much. I loved how they talked about forgiveness can be more for yourself then for the other person. And just because you forgive them doesn’t mean they have to be a part of your life. Again a lot of us can learn from this..
I really enjoyed all of these books. I loved how in each book the main characters were healed from whatever issues they were having.
I can only assume that there will be 2 more books and I can’t wait to read them. Next up will be Dallas’ story. But the one I’m most looking forward to/hoping for.. is Luca.. I want to get to know him and understand him.
I definitely think you should add these to your TBR but if you are like me when it comes to series then wait until they are all out:) they can we read as standalones but they are all interconnected!
I received this novel as an ARC and LOVED IT. Jo and Derek are so sweet together and I related heavily to Derek, appreciating that these characters are well-rounded and make wrong decisions and come back and work through trauma, etc. Therapy being mentioned was so good, like not everything has to be done alone. I definitely wasn't expecting some of the twists that came from this novel, but I'm here for it. As much as we introduced the idea of Katie and Dallas, I want to hear more about them, it's been teased for so long!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
PLEASE MELISSA!! Continue to give me more!!! (Don’t yell at me) But, not having read the 2nd installment in the Midnight in Dallas series, I felt like I didn’t miss anything! Now, you don’t HAVE to read the two other books to understand things one. But, it is such an amazing journey seeing how everyone lives are and where they have came.
Derek. My man… it was finally your time to get a woman. And might I say WELL deserved! Listen dude, we can tell something is going on. This is definitely the change you need!
(Trigger warning: Alcoholism & abuse) Derek’s storyline about his father crushed my heart. Someone that also dealt with this can completely feel the pain that he went through and not trying to let all other emotions slip through. You want to forgive people for the wrong they have done because that’s the person that you are. It is a hard grief to get over but I am so proud of Derek❤️ People’s lives don’t make sense sometimes. Are you ever going to have a HEA? Everyone goes wrong at once. Will anyone love me? Melissa Grace proves Derek’s heart wrong when she brings Jo into his life.
Tsk tsk tsk… Jo… ahh yes, let me tell you girl. Your about to hate your life for a day! She’s a great example of “WHY ME?!?” (I wish I could figure out how to put GIFs in a review because I know the PERFECT one!). Her life isn’t what she is exactly wanting. Years and years being in the news casting industry. Why is that? She doesn’t want to let her father down. Will he support her if she goes down a different path? Making choices for others because she wants to please them. But, it’s time she needs to do things for herself.
Both Derek and Jo have opportunities and choices arising. Will they overcome them? Or will they overcome love🤭😉😉
This couple I LOVED!!! Have you ever read a story where they help build each other together and individually? Derek and Jo made me even question my relationship and how to build it so we didn’t bring our life’s stressed into it and ruin things. This book made me self reflect a lot and it made me connect with the characters SOOO much more!
Melissa girl. I am not a insta-love person. But you always make it work and constantly put butterflies in my stomach! Thank you for always creating the best storyline and I can’t wait for the next book! Also thank you Melissa for gifting me an ARC of Long Way Home ❤️ it took me a very long time to get to it but I’m glad I finally did!
Long Way Home is book three in the Midnight in Dallas series. Though this is a series, it would easily be read as a standalone. I wouldn't recommend it, though, as all the books in this series are so good! Great characters!
Jolene Kingsley is a Chicago-based reporter living in the shadow of her uber successful father. Her life in Chicago goes up in flames (literally) causing her to flee to her childhood home and best friend in Nashville.
Derek Knights is the bass player in the popular band Midnight in Dallas. He should be living the dream...but he isn't. He is extremely unhappy and wants to leave the band but is afraid to tell his bandmates--especially his cousin Dallas.
I just love this author's writing. It flows so easily. I quickly became absorbed in this story and the next thing I knew I was 50% in. I love all the characters and returning to their world was so wonderful.
There are trigger warnings that the author states in the beginning of the book. This story deals with heavy topics. Both Derek and Jo have their own family issues to deal with/work through. I absolutely loved Jo and Derek and Derek's backpack, motorcycle-riding shelter dog, Izzy. She is just the cutest.
I can NOT wait for the continuation of these characters' stories. I need to know what is wrong with Katie and I need Luca to find his happy!
This is my favorite of the series. Thank you (so much) to the author for my advance reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
i had high hopes for this book after devouring the first two in the series and boy did it deliver!!
first of all, derek is a sweetheart and so i've been looking forward to his book since the very first one! he's still a sweetheart and i'd die for him.
jo was a new addition to the cast of characters but she was so awesome! the book starts with her life getting turned completely upside down, so what else is a girl to do besides move back home to nashville to live with her best friend and meet a hot bass player and fall in love??
i especially loved how both jo and derek focused on their own dreams and wants in life. i won't say too much more because i want to avoid spoilers, but the messages in this book were so empowering to read about!
big thanks to the author for sending me an eARC!! i would read five thousand more books by her and i politely demand that she do just that!
My love for the Midnight in Dallas series is unshakable. I adore these people and the setting that Melissa created.
The story follows TV reporter Jo, who is fighting to live up to her father's legacy, and band member Derek, who is no longer enjoying his time in the band. With similar hardships, the couple leans on each other for emotional support and, along the road, discover a type of love worth clinging to.
Derek and Jo's relationship grew significantly. We witnessed a lot of regular, everyday actions and behaviors, which I find fascinating, and it simply made their romance seem more grounded and real.
I absolutely enjoyed this book, and the entire series just keeps getting better and better.
My goodness! This book…amazing. Melissa Grace’s writing pulls you in, but the story just doesn’t let go. This is one I’ll be thinking about for a long time. So many surprises, so much heart, and so many lessons learned. It’s one of those books I wish I could un-read just so I could read it again for the first time. Loved every minute!
Big thank you to Melissa Grace for the advanced copy of this third installment in the Midnight in Dallas series. Sadly, this one did not do it for me...
Summary Jo's life goes up in flames, literally, when she loses her boyfriend, job, and apartment all in one day. So she decides to take a step back from things and visit her best friend in Nashville. On a night out, she meets a guy who seems too good to be true, Derek, who withholds that he's the bass player in a Grammy-award winning band. They share secrets, hopes, and dreams, and assume they'll never see each other again. But fate leads them back together when Jo's friend brings her to dinner at Derek's best friend's house. What ensues is a whirlwind relationship, laced with family problems and tough choices.
What did I enjoy about it? I read all three books in the series in about a week, so at this point I feel like I’m friends with the characters and am sad to leave them now until Book #4 comes out. They are all very likeable and as a reader, I want to see them all achieve happiness. Plus each book has at least one moment where I've barked out a laugh at a funny line. Sadly, the positives end there.
What did I not enjoy about it? I've been barely getting through the sap in this series, but this one was the worst. This book's main focus of conflict is that Joe and Derek's dads both treat them like crap, and the ending was just way too peachy to be believable. People don't change after one conversation, and I know these are supposed to be happy novels, but I just cannot get on board. I'm also disappointed in the lack of representation and diversity among the characters, not just in the identities they hold, but that they all lack distinguishing factors. Each book lacks depth, has too much sadness/trauma, and too closely follows the same formula.
#LongWayHome by @heymelissagrace is an AMAZING next book in the #MidnightInDallas series! Thank you so much for a chance to review this e-ARC! This novel follows the story of Dallas & Jolene (Jo) as they redefine what it means to be yourself & to live your truth. As with all the other books in this series, the writing is top notch & the character development is fantastic. I was laughing & giggling with both old & new characters within the first few chapters. It felt like coming home after I finished the first 2 books in this series. On to the things I loved about the story…a lovable pet has been included in each novel of this series thus far & Izzy the senior dog is so freaking cute in this one! I loved that Dallas chose to highlight the importance of giving senior animals the love they deserve (swoooooon). 💕 Dallas & Jolene grew on me as a couple. I loved that they showed up differently in this relationship than in past relationship. (letting go of plans, being more vulnerable, being their true selves with each other). Their connection is so genuine & refreshing! As with all families (even #FoundFamily) there are conflicts when plans change & when people are realizing that maybe they want something different for their life. I loved how these discussions of changing life paths were depicted in this novel because it is messy sometimes when closing a chapter in your life to start a new one. But, family sticks with you through those tough times even if things get rocky for a bit. I loved how Melissa handled this. I also loved the focus on being true to yourself & finding forgiveness. This novel contains discussions about abuse & trauma, but I agree with Melissa’s trigger warning note at the beginning of the novel…it is important to talk about these tough topics because they happen & it promotes healing. I thought it was so important for readers to hear that forgiveness can be for you…forgiving someone who has wronged you or hurt you doesn’t mean that you have to let them back in…it gives you the freedom to move past it & take back your own personal control.
I absolutely loved this book, I was blessed with an opportunity to read an ARC of it and I’m so grateful because the story was so beautiful.. there were many serious topics that I feel can make or break a book if they’re done wrong, but Melissa Grace executed them perfectly! I will definitely be reading more from her in the future!
I love all the books in the Midnight in Dallas series, but this one takes home the gold. I am not sure I’ve ever felt so close to a character as I do to Jo, and I’m sure many people will feel the same. Her journey is one so many of us go through, and I can’t wait for everyone to see how she comes out the other side. Derek also really shines in this installment of the series, which makes me so incredibly happy because finally he gets to show us the amazing and genuine person he is. And the way Derek’s and Jo’s lives intersect at a time when both of them long so badly to be seen for who they really are …. major heart squeezes (and I am NOT usually this mushy!). Melissa writes so beautifully and does such an incredible job of immersing the reader is in the world she’s created, I sometimes forget I don’t know these characters in real life. Do not miss out on this beautiful book!!!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my review.
This is the 3rd book in the series. Written from a new characters book of view that we have not met before. That was a very fresh take, which I truly appreciated. Jo is very sweet, and seeing her interact with Katie and Derek and getting her backstory was wonderful!
This book does deal with very heavy topics, such as child abuse, domestic abuse and substance abuse. They are dealt with very honestly and respectfully.
What you will get in this book: ✴️ Sweet furry friends ✴️ Rockstar romance ✴️ Friends that go through ups and downs ✴️ Family drama ✴️ Self Discovery
Thanks to Melissa for kindly provide me an eARC in exchange of an honest review.
“-I wish I could see the world though your eyes. -I wish you could see yourself through my eyes.”
•• What’s this about? ••
Jo is having a really bad day. She broke up with her boyfriend (or maybe he did), she lost her job (or maybe she was very justified fired) and she lost her house (or literally burned into fire). Anyway, for once, Jo’s life is not going according to the plan.
So now, she is back in Nashville. Maybe being around old memories and her best friend Katie is the best way to find herself again.
One night, she meets a gorgeous man at a bar and they kiss. But they don’t exchange numbers or anything. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. That’s why she finds this man at Sunday dinner at Katie’s friends’. And that’s how Derek and Jo’s story begins.
•• What do I think about it? ••
Melissa’s books have a place in my heart. And I can assure that this one might be the best one of the three in the Midnight in Dallas series. There’s something about her books that makes you unable to stop reading. You are always laughing or sobbing or smiling for how cute it is everything.
This is a kind of insta-love story, but I loved how months passed and we could see how Jo and Derek grew a lot as individuals and as a couple. Both of them had a lot of past issues and I liked how they dealt with it before being completely able to be together.
This is a story that might help you if you have lost your path in life. Because that’s exactly what happened to Derek and Jo. Both of them wanted different things form the ones they were doing. And they learned that you don’t have to waste your happiness just to make others happy.
“-How can you be so sure? -Because love will always lead you home.”
Another thing that I loved was how I got a smile in the exact moment I read about the old characters. And I can assure you some things: Ella is my favorite for sure; I need to know more about Luca; I need to read Dallas and Katie as a couple. A funny thing I did while I was reading is that I was looking for Luca’s love interest the whole time. And I have some names and I really hope is one of them.
I have a lot of highlights and a lot of notes on my kindle copy. I have a lot of favorite scenes. And I can’t wait to read the next one.
Okey, so I don’t want to say any spoiler. Just go ahead and read this masterpiece (which will be out on OCTOBER 4). And if you haven’t read the previous books, READ THEM. Melissa’s books are just amazing.
Btw, THAT scene about the band… I just cried and still can’t believe it. And THAT scene in the epilogue was everything I was looking for.
And remember Luca's words: Life is hard. Like my dick.

Are you looking for a cozy story filled with humour, resilience and spice? Then look no further!
Every time Melissa releases a book I get a *little* more obsessed with her & this world she’s created. Her stories are always full of heart, laughs and swoony moments that never fail to reel me in. And this book is no different.
Jo and Derek’s story is the perfect representation of how life can present us with what we need exactly when we’re needing it. The pair’s chemistry is explosive, & the love they share is deeply rooted in their mutual desire to find a place, or person, to call “home.”
I enjoyed this book so much. All the little intimate moments threaded between raucous shenanigans. The representation of found-family. The love and importance a pet can play in a person’s life, no matter their age. And the life lessons we learn along the way.
Filled with Melissa’s quip one-liners and classic cozy vibes, LONG WAY HOME is the perfect addition to the Midnight in Dallas series. I can’t wait for the next one!
What to look expect from LWH: ✨Rockstar romance ✨Insta-love ✨Found family ✨Adorable furry friends ✨Therapy rep ✨Self-realization
This one is about Dallas and Jo, but we get to see how everybody is doing and I love seeing them all together. Dallas and Jo meet when they're both in a bad place in life and immediatly connect. Their relationship progresses fast, but is believable because of the things they are both going through and how they find in each other someone they can talk to and trust. The conflicts made me sad and mad, but it was something they needed to go through to get to where they should be. I just loved their story and how this wasn't just their love story but about them as individuals and how those stories connected for them to get together.
I have to say
I'm very excited and curious to see what's next for everybody!
*I've received an ARC of this book, from the author, in exchange for an honest review.
So I did not read this in order, I guess the first two books are about two different couples from this friend group, but this one is about Jolene and Derek 💕
Jolene aka Jo, is a reporter or wants to be. She has done everything according to her plan, everything was going great - she was going to be engaged soon, and will be promoted ... Her boyfriend breaks up with her, because she was the other woman. She did not get promoted and was fired. When she returned home that night, she sees emergency vehicles surrounding a burning building. She has no place to go, no job and her next best thing was going home to Nashville.
Derek, he seems like a mellow guy. He's part of a band, as a bass player. Lately, he has been feeling underwhelmed, and he wants to find something that will spark him back to life. One night at the bar, he meets the girl- Jo, both connected instantly and conversed naturally. They didn't exchange info, but the universe or something, fate will bring them back together.
It's been awhile since I've read a story like this, it seemed like a Hallmark movie 🥰 Everything written was thought out perfectly, each character and their story development 🤌🏻 I wish I read this in order and I will read the other books in due time. ☺️
Whew. Let me tell you, my heart was invested quickly after everything that Jo went through. And if you have read the other books, it is Derek’s turn to try and find love. I was so happy when I realized this book was about him, and Jo is perfect for him.
Jo and Derek both have impossible to please fathers, and that is wearing them down. Jo’s Dad is a famous broadcaster at CNN, and Derek’s is an alcoholic and abusive man. Derek never told anyone about the abuse, and used the band as a way to get out and stay away from his dad. His heart has never been in it, but he didn’t want to disappoint his cousin. Jo is visiting Nashville after life basically chased her out of Chicago. She had a plan for everything, even eating the same thing for lunch the last five years. But there is no plan for what happened to her. She is regrouping when she meets Derek. Will the girl with a plan for everything go with the flow? Will the man who is concerned about everyone’s happiness but his own chase after what he really wants?
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I cannot get enough of the Midnight in Dallas series! The characters, and the world Melissa has created with their lives in Nashville is one of my favorite literary settings and storylines! With every addition to the series, I keep wanting to learn more about the characters we meet along the way.
While I liked the fact that this book brought in an “outsider” (Jo) who we hadn’t meet in the first two books, I think her introduction into the existing character’s family was slightly rushed and I felt like she never fully connected with the other supporting characters. But then again, with her relationship with Derek, I also felt like it was one of those “when you know, you know” moments. Either way, I was rooting for them from the beginning.
Jo and Derek’s attempt to live lives that are true to themselves will resonate with a lot a people. There were parts of this book where I was legitimately stressed out because I knew the characters were stressed! Going through major life decisions is a real-life mindset that tends to force individuals to create stronger bonds with those who support their journey – which is why I feel like Jo and Derek connected so quickly.
Without giving away too much, I will say the only reason I didn’t rate this book five stars was the ending. I was kind of hoping that this book would reenforce the idea that everyone’s family makeup can look a bit different. To me, it fell short. But who is to say what Jo and Derek’s future holds?! I can’t wait to find out.
What a gem. I have loved every book in this series but Long Way Home has stolen my heart.
Jo is by far my favorite woman in this series. I relate to more than most characters I have read. I loved watching her character come to life and really let herself shine as the book went on.
Derek.. sigh.. He is such a beautiful man. His character came to life on the pages and I fell more in love with him ( sorry Luca)! Derek story has a little darkness to it and it was such a breath of fresh air.
Melissa did such a damn good job with this 3rd book. GUYS THE SPICE LEVEL WAS 🤌! Check the trigger warnings and grab a snack. This one will suck you in and spit you back out begging for more. And the last two pages.. Really Melissa? How are You going to do us like that?? Can’t wait for the last two books of this series. I’ll be impatiently waiting.
I am loving this series! This is book 3 and follows another Midnight in Dallas band member, Derek and friend of a friend, Jo, who moves home after an epic breakup and firing (epic and hilarious!). Derek meanwhile is dealing with his own issues.
I love the humor in these books - I don’t normally laugh out loud while reading, but I have several time while reading this series (I even gasped out loud at times!). I also really enjoy the fact that it’s a romance but focuses a lot on friendships as well. And the author really captures the feelings and struggles the characters go through while trying to find themselves.
Check the content warnings for this one if you have any triggers.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
