A purrfectly delightful sci-fi romance!

*****
Rating: 4 stars
Steam: 2.5 flames
Genre: Alien, Sci-fi Romance, Fated Mates, Forbidden Romance
*****
The first installment in the Ardun Royal Guard's Forbidden Mates series was amazing! Amir competed in gladiator games to become a member of the Royal Guard, and with that distinction, he also becomes a member of the Shahra's harem. It is the Ardun's highest honor, so when he wins the games, he is ecstatic to take his pledge to the guard and finally achieve what he has trained his entire life for!

But there's a little glitch... or should I say scent... coming from a little human female that's going to throw a wrench in his lifelong dream.

Zara and her girlfriends are on a girls' trip to Ardun, and nothing could be more exciting than attending the gladiator parade and induction. Hot alien warriors! Count me in too!! However, when rebels attempt to kidnap Zara, the shahra orders her future guards to protect the humans... Amir rushes to protect the human whose scent has piqued his interest...

What follows is a sizzling page-turner full of suspense, betrayal, and a blossoming forbidden romance. The characters are endearing, the worldbuilding of the matriarchal society is amazin, and the plot is compelling. Both the primary and secondary characters will win your heart. Amir is an honorable Ardun who is also the sweetest.

Amir, is off to a fantastic start, and I can't wait to see what happens with Zara's friends and the rebellion! This gets a must read recommendation from me and I will absolutely continue this series!

“Stars help her, how was she ever going to bring herself to say goodbye?”

So begins Ami’s newest series, Forbidden Mates of the Ardun Royal Guard. And what a beginning this is! To be honest I don’t know how she’s going to be able to top it. It’s no secret how much I fell in love with Silas, an Ardun trader who was the title character in Conning the Interstellar Conman. I doubt I’ll ever love any other Ardun as much as I do him. That being said, Amir definitely comes close. He’s absolutely incredible - humble, sweet, kind, noble and honorable. He also has never been loved. He makes a comment to Zara about how long it’s been since he had someone to cuddle and I just wanted to put my arms around him and hold him tight! He’s also focused on his lifelong dream of being in the Royal Guard which requires him to never take a mate of his own and instead be a part of Shahra Fareeda’s harem. Falling in love with a human female wasn’t something he wanted or anticipated. While he is initially resistant it isn’t long before he’s head over tails for beautiful, loving Zara. Neither can deny their intense chemistry and the bond growing between them although she tries to put his dreams before her own feelings again and again.

There’s an interesting and exciting plot to the book involving rebels, attempted kidnappings, an assassination attempt and threats of intergalactic war, not all of which are resolved and will continue with the series. This is in no way a cliffhanger, though. I promise. Amir and Zara get their heart warming, sigh-inducing hea.

I received an advance review copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was not prepared for the awesomeness of this book. Amir is just the perfect mic of shy and so very manly and sexy. He is also very loyal and just! Our FMC is a luck woman. The heat is such a fun thing, you just can't stop reading it! Also the tail is so easy to picture thanks to the amazing descriptions. I loved it and I want more 😍

A nice warm story with a feline alien. Not a lot of depth, with a mild variant of the fated-mate trope. The world building was solid, as were the thrilling parts. The romance was comfortable, with low angst, and the sex scenes were enthusiastic if not sizzling.

I'll read the next one.

Sweet and erotic romance.
Series setup: (Forbidden Mates of the Ardun Royal Guard) The Ardun are a cat-like species with striped fur, sharp claws, long tails, & stand-up ears. They walk on two legs, are extremely smart, and use advanced technologies. Their fluffy and neatly combed fur, especially tails, are a symbol of pride. They're a matriarch led society and their ruler is titled The Shahra. They've a young & newly crowned Shahra named Fareeda. Per ancient law & tradition, the Ardun have a yearly gladiator competition to determine who will get the honor of being in the Royal guard and harem. All finalists that make it to the last round get the chance to be in it. Yet, the gladiator competition continues until there is only one winner, for bragging rights. This series features a new couple each book and builds the world. The prequel is available for free if you sign up to the authors newsletter. Though you don't have to read it, I'd suggest that you do for background and pleasure. The lead female is super spunky and the action is intense, sneak-peeks of the actual competitions rocked.

This book: Book 1 in the Forbidden Mates of the Ardun Royal Guard series. It stands alone and has a complete HEA. The overall winning gladiator this year is Amir. He's worked toward being in the Royal guard and harem since he was a small kitten. Longing for two things his whole life, honor and pride. Amir may not have any family or friends to be proud of him, but he can now say he's the best of the best, and everyone watching this year knows it too. That (added to his neat and fluffy fur) is pride. Furthermore, he's only one ceremony away from being in the Royal guard and harem. That's honor. At the ceremony, Amir scents a delicious human in the crowd and she keeps pulling his attention away. He tries to ignore it and focus on the ceremony instead. But the ceremony is interrupted by a kidnapping, and the subsequent chaos of the huge crowd dispersing. Shahra Fareeda orders all of her gladiator champions to save the humans in the crowd, it's obvious that they're being targeted. Amir immediately searches for the delicious human, and see's that she's the one being kidnapped, in the crowd of spectators. Her name is Zara and she works at the Earth Embassy in Ardun. He's able to track her down and rescue her. But has to keep her with him to ensure her safety. The attackers got away and they have no clue why it happened in the first place. Since they are forced into close proximity for days on end, they have to deal with the elephant in the room. Not only are they super attracted to each other but they are able to do things only mates should be able to do. Amir cannot have a mate if he's going to be in the Royal guard. Zara's hormones push Amir into a rut, where his loyalty is put to the ultimate test. Throw in some crazy elitist Ardun- who are gunning for the humans, hilarious commentary from Zara's girlfriends, several coups, and a royal assassination attempt. Will Amir choose his lifelong goal or give it all up for a human?

Opinion: Super sweet & erotic romance. There was a slow build up, a bang in the middle, and a slow glide to finish out the resolution. Amir was such a gentleman, deeply protective and didn't seem to have a mean or dishonorable bone in his body. Total book boyfriend. Zara was shy and self-conscious (except in the bedroom or with her girls), and held herself together when it mattered. The human gals that came to visit Zara are a total hoot, I hope they get their own books. The bedroom scenes were super steamy and frequent, and gave a naughty side to the main characters. It never goes to deep dark places (a mild kidnapping is as dark as it gets). Due to some sailor language and explicit love scenes I'd suggest for adult audiences. Editing and cover art are lovely. I'd recommend for fans of spicy romance. Happy reading!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Amir by Ami Wright is a delightful blend of feline alien heat, forbidden romance, and action-packed worldbuilding that kicks off the Ardun Royal Guard's Forbidden Mates series with energy and heart. If you're into big, protective, purring alien warriors and a healthy dose of "oops, I’m in heat and now everything is complicated"—this is absolutely your kind of ride.
Amir is the quintessential honor-bound hero—strong, loyal, disciplined, and just a little bit tortured. His lifelong dream to serve in the shahra's royal guard is finally within reach... until fate throws Zara into his path. Or rather, into his senses. Her unexpected heat changes everything, making him question not only his priorities, but his very identity as a warrior. The push-pull between his duty and his biological drive to protect and claim her is intensely satisfying.
Zara is equally compelling. She’s a relatable human heroine caught in a whirlwind of danger and desire, but she handles it all with sass and strength. She’s not just a plot device for Amir’s inner turmoil—she holds her own and brings warmth, humor, and curiosity to the Ardun world. Her girls' trip to watch alien gladiator games turns into a thrilling, life-altering adventure, and I was here for it.
The chemistry between Zara and Amir is electric. There’s just the right amount of build-up and tension before things get spicy—and once they do, it’s primal, possessive, and full of that special alien intensity. The spice is well-balanced with emotion, and the purring? Yeah, let’s just say that little detail purrs its way into your heart (and maybe other places, too).
What really makes this book shine is the worldbuilding. The matriarchal Ardun society, the gladiator culture, the political undercurrents, and the early hints of rebellion all add depth to the story without bogging it down. The setting is vivid, immersive, and genuinely cool, with enough intrigue to fuel not just a single romance, but a whole series.
Amir is a satisfying, steamy sci-fi romance with stakes that feel real and a romance that burns hot. It promises a rich series ahead—especially with Zara’s girlfriends still on the planet and a rebellion brewing. This one’s a must-read for fans of alien fated mates, big protective softies with claws, and worlds where power and passion collide. I’m already eager to see who falls next.

🔥 “I can smell your need. Let me see how beautiful you are when you come apart. ”
~~~
I adored Amir! He’s one strong, protective and honorable male. I really liked his fierce determination and resourcefulness to follow the Shahra’s orders and protect his human. Amir is a total badass and a knight in shining armor! Even more, I loved how hard he’s worked to win the gladiator games and achieve his life-long dream to be the best of the best and a part of the royal guard. But fate has a way of changing our plans and goals when we least expect it!
Zara works for the human embassy on Ardun. I loved how kind, compassionate and caring she is. Even more, she's such a great friend. And she’s so brave to face all the dangers thrown her way. She’s amazing and I loved her so much!
Everything that happened between Zara and Amir was fantastic! There was a lot of hesitance and denial in the beginning but their chemistry was amazing from the start. I loved how both really cared for and supported each other through all the hardships and dangers they went through. Even more, I loved how Zara took every opportunity to tell and show Amir how magnificent he is. And when they finally gave in to their attraction, the passion they shared was blazing hot! Oh, an Ardun male in a rut is a sight to behold! They were truly meant for each other and more than a perfect match.
In addition, the storyline and worldbuilding were fantastic. I loved that we got a more in-depth introduction to the matriarchal Ardun society. And I loved how considerate and strong Shahra Fareeda is. Moreover, all the betrayals, rebellions and unexpected turns of events kept me glued to the pages till the very end.
Overall, the story is a fantastic start of the series. It’s filled with non-stop action, danger, suspense, twists, conspiracies, treachery, drama, steamy romance and spectacular characters.
I loved it and cannot wait to see what happens next!
This is a well written book that I enjoyed reading. The characters are awesome and the main characters have amazing chemistry. The world building is vivid and the storyline is interesting to read, altogether it’s definitely a page turner. There’s action, danger, kidnapping, passion, desire, very steamy scenes and more with a happily ever after ending.
Zara is on a night out with her best friends, they are going to watch the gladiators parade, awards and the swearing in to the royal guards. Things take a drastic turn when two Ardun attempt to kidnap her. She’s saved by the winning gladiator Amir. He takes her to his home where they will be safe and she spends the night. When they leave to go to the embassy she’s kidnapped again but Amir is able to find and rescue her. Zara manages to get hold of her friend who is with Amir’s mentor, he tells them to go to the palace and so they head there, stopping for the night at a hotel. Things get very steamy between them but in the morning things turn a little awkward as Zara doesn’t want him to lose his chance to join the royal guards who also make up the matriarch’s harem. Once again as they are leaving Zara is pulled into a moving van, Amir isn’t losing her this time and jumps in, throwing her abductors out of the moving vehicle. The weird thing is, the hover cars destination is the palace. They don’t understand why until there’s an interesting comm which reveals a fatal incident is going to happen to the matriarch. They try to come up with a plan and hope they make it on time, if they don’t it will spark a war between Ardun and Earth, something they don’t want to happen.
Zara works at the human embassy on Ardun. She's on a girl's weekend with her friends and the take in the gladiator games. During the parade she sees Amir who has caught her eye throughout the games. Amir is the top gladiator , an honor he has dreamed of since he was a small kitten The ceremony is to accept the top gladiators into the Royal Guard and the Shara's harem. Amir is distracted by the most delicious smell and he scans the crowd until he sees Zara. Hs is following the Shara's orders to protect the humans after chaos erupts at the ceremony. His Zara is being kidnapped. Her scent is the trail he follows and he rescues her. But that is just the beginning. I could not put this book down. Ami describes her characters in great detail. Amir is a cat like creature and I love how she works in so many fun things that cats do like grooming, tail flicks and purring. Love the purring in the steamy scenes. There is danger, conspiracies, friendships, plot twists, and an attraction to each other that escalates to so much more. A page turner that will keep you reading and reading. A wonderful start to this series and it has a HEA.
Zara has been working on Ardun in the Earth Embassy for about three years and absolutely loves it there. She has the chance to see the galdiator games and have her best friends with her at the same time. All this and her favourite, Amir is the champion too! Does it get much better? Maybe not but it can definitely get worse and it does. One minute she is in the crowd watching the ceremony and the next she is being grabbed. She is more than a little shocked when her rescuer ends being none other than Amir! As for him, he had noticed the lovely human when the sudden waft of cherries had reached him when he was walking to the podium. Somehow his brain kept getting to look back at her every so often, enough that he saw her being snatched. With the embassy unreachable and Zara being tracked through her comm, they have to try and hide while they sort out what the possible threat. Will they emerge unscathed from being in such close quarters?
I absolutely loved this! The cultures and the description of the planet. I cannot wait to find out more.
Zara (h) is at the closing ceremony for the gladiator games with her friends when she's kidnapped off the street. Amir (H), the top gladiator at the games destined for the royal guard and harem of the planet's female ruler, witnesses Zara's abduction and goes to rescue her. He scents her as his mate but is conflicted as this would mean he has to give up his royal guard dreams. Zara and Amir end up on the run together, battling an unknown enemy who keeps trying to kidnap Zara and battling their growing physical attraction for one another. Lots of action and adventure, both in and out of the bedroom. This is the first full book in this series (there is a prequel) that gives a different story for each human/Ardun pairing - definitely looking forward to reading the rest and getting the big picture of the overarching story present throughout.
Amir and Zara . . .
The Ardun species are cat-like in appearance. They participate in an annual gladiator competition for the honored winner to become part of the Royal guard and harem. But only unmated Ardun can become Royal guards. Zara is already attracted to Amir, the champion gladiator she has watched in the competition, although he does not want a mate. He has worked his entire life to achieve this rank and absolutely cannot fall in love.
But when Amir’s monarch tasks the warriors with protecting the human females, and he sees Zara being kidnapped, he rescues her as the scent of her heat puts him into a rut where he will be compelled to mate. Can he resist this compulsion? Or will he forever give up his right to become a Royal guard? And is there more going on than they realized as a plot at the palace seems to be underway?
Good
Amir and Zara
Newly crowned gladiatorial champion Amir, has his swearing in ceremony as the Queen’s guard interrupted as a human is attacked.
Sent by his Queen to rescue her, Amir saves Zara, but it’s not long before the two of them find themselves falling for each other- and the Queen’s guard are forbidden from taking mates!
Dodging danger at every step, Amir and Zara struggle to find safety, and figure out what exactly precipitated the attack…
A quick, fun sci-fi romance, this was a light hearted read, despite the perils our couple faced. There was plenty of action, a little angst, and a fair amount of romance- everything the sci-fi romance reader tends to enjoy! A fairly quick read, it’s a good evening book (there are some definite not-safe-for-work scenes) or an enjoyable weekend one.
Oh wow! God I seriously loved this book! It’s the first book I’ve read by this author and I promise it won’t be the last. It was brilliant, I love the fact it’s not a typical shifter or sci fi/alien concept. Amir is a truly honourable male but damn those pesky hormones just have to get in the way of his childhood dream of being a Royal guard. Of course no one could predict the trouble Zara would get into or that his going to help her would have the ending it did but damn this book is hot! Amazing story that I am excited to see progress in future books. .
I loved Amir, from his looks to his personality. A great book boyfriend. ;)
Aliens with tails are one of my favorite things. Amir's lifelong dream is to join the royal guard. Then he sees human, Zara.
"The fragrance was like no one thing Amir had ever scented. It was a little like cherry or rose petals with something warm and earthy beneath it, and it was definitely feminine. Distinctly feminine. Intoxicating. Amir’s mouth parted and he drew in a deep breath, trying to take in more of it. Then he saw her."
The relationships with Zara is forbidden and there are lots of twists and action to keep you reading.
Loved it! What a start to a series. Amir and Zara are such a cool pair to root for. Amir is as committed to his career goals as he is just a good being. Zara is a sweet, caring human who I couldn’t help but want to be happy. Thrust together because of a conspiracy, their survival was dependent on their love. Full of action and twists to keep the pages turning. Hot as can be intimacy. The ending has surprises and sweetness all wrapped together. I am looking forward to the next!! Wright hit a home run with this one!
Amir is a great read, it’s a page turner with complex characters and romance tropes that will have any fans of the genre unable to put it down.
Amirs relationship with Zara developed very quickly and continued on that trajectory through the whole book.
Now onto the spice … this was one of the hottest books I’ve ever read, Amir is definitely a man who puts his woman first
I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
This is the first time I’ve read this author and it will not be the last. Her characters are well developed and the storyline is intriguing, action packed, drama filled and entertaining. Zara is immediately drawn to the kind hearted champion Amir. He is the champion of the gladiators and is now is in the running for the Royal Harem, an honor that he has dreamed of since he was a little boy. Amir is not looking for a mate because it would mean an end to his lifelong dream of being a royal guard. Will he fight against fate?
it was Good
I liked it. It was short and to the point and I liked the characters. I think my rating just reflects that it was short and quick to read. My only complaint was that I didn’t feel there was a lot of world building in order to really understand the planet. I liked the back and forth of the main characters and am glad that there was a happy ending. I will still end up reading the rest because it is interesting and I hope to learn more information about the planet and the species.
I thought I’d enjoy this but something just didn’t sit right for me and I don’t know why.
The last 20% of the book was a let down.
I’d already guessed right from the start that the was queen gay.
Some things just didn’t seem to flow right and remained ambiguous or unexplained. They may be explained in future books but to get there I first have to read this book and I just don’t think I want to move onto the next.
Also referring to the children of the cat people as kittens whilst logical made me think of my own cat and suddenly I was weirded out.
I loved this book! I thought it was fantastic! Great world building. I was fascinated by the feline/humanoid Ardun and their society. And I loved the characters. Amir was so sweet and honorable. He and Zara were so good together. I liked her and thought they made a great match. But for them to be together, he would have to give up on his dream- one he was on the brink of achieving. Excellent book! I absolutely loved it and can't wait until the next in this series. Highly recommended! 5 stars.
This book is a new series that is set in the world of the Ardun with interesting and unique characters. This is a feline-human species where females are revered and rule the political system. There are some might not like that, and there is danger intrigue and mating heat. This book is full of political intrigue, action and a steamy slow burn between Amir and the human female he is compelled to protect. a must read
This was an exciting and sizzling series opener. This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved the world building, characters and plot. All were engaging and descriptive, pulling me fully into the story. Amir and Zara had fantastic chemistry and the steam about burned up my reader ;P I'm looking forward to diving into the next book to see how things continue play out but I'm sure there will be more suspense, betrayal and other forbidden romances. Good fun!
What a great start to a, what promises to be, wonderful series. Zara is immidiately drawn to kind-hearted gladiator and her protector. Amir is not looking for mate because finding a mate would mark an end to his longlife dream. Will he accept his fate or will he fight against it? Read the book and find out.
I loved Amir and Zara. Amir was so sweet and honorable... Their story was wonderful. Seeing both of them care so much about what happened to the other was touching. There was just the right touch of suspense to keep things interesting and a few twists and turns to keep you guessing. Loved it and can't wait for the next one the series!
This is the first story in the new "Forbidden Mates of the Ardun Royal Guard" series. It is not an overly long story, more like novella length, that is a stand alone read. The story is surprising and intriguing. I love the world this author has built. The characters are interesting and I love how the story develops. Such a good read. I am hooked!
Love It
I enjoyed their story because this series was different than your average shifter story. I like that usual instinct and desire that sparks between mates was there, but the physical differences between humans and Ardun males was listed. I enjoyed this story a lot and can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
I was the editor for this wonderful creative and thoughtful (and hot) scifi romance from Ami Wright. Cat hybrid gladiator (entertainment) rescues human woman from a would-be kidnapper. Set in the same universe as Wright's The Lost Romans series, this focuses on political upheaval on the planet Ardun. And cat-men who will purr for the right mate. And rip apart anyone else.
