Forty Proof #7

Midlife Magic Hunter

Rate this book
Would you like an extra helping of hot flashes to go with that midlife crisis? Yeah, I thought not. And yet, here we are. Burning down buildings.

You know, dating in your forties should be easier. Should be. But it really isn’t. My first date in I don’t-know-how-long is broken up by my ex-husband. I mean, he’s dead, but still.

Then a cryptic note from a voodoo queen.
A siren who can’t keep it in his pants.
And a hot fae who seems to be everything I’ve ever wanted. Except that he’s not a certain blacksmith. I can deal, right?

Once more I am up against the dark council, fighting to discover and hide ingredients to a spell that would mean destruction for not only Savannah, but the world. I know who I can trust. And I know who I can’t.

Or so I think. With twisted spells afoot, hidden agendas and dark pathways, you’d think I’d be terrified.
But I’m not, because I have my friends, and they have my back. And my back? I’ve got my Advil for that.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

Not my favourite book of this series but still a fantastic, fun and quite a bumpy ride. These characters are amazing and I love their different personalities and how I can get caught up in their thoughts and feelings.

For me, this book could have been the grand finale, tidied up and put away but it has taken a turn and I'm not sure about it and obviously the turn involves another book.

What I did like about this book is Bree's love choice and her recognition of who is bad and who is good, timing of this has been crucial because it has spanned over 7 books now.

Not quite the 5 stars and not quite hitting my favourite shelf but still an exceptional part to the series and highly recommended to all who love this genre but want a bit of a laugh too.

DNF at 44% after the FMC Bree flew back to Savannah to find the next ingredient in their quest to stop a vampire army.

I was seriously bored of the quest with so. many. ingredients. for the team to track down. The relationship drama between Bree and Crash vs. Remy was annoying, and repetitive complaints from Bree about her "aging body" in the narration started getting on my nerves. Honestly, 40s isn't even that old to have so many health issues.

I really enjoyed the cast individually as characters, especially Robert and Skeletor, and their fun banter, but at 7 books into the series, I was really losing interest in following Bree with her chaotic romantic relationships and vague quests. I think this is the 3rd series by this author that I eventually abandoned due to character, world, and plot choices, even though I mostly enjoyed the series' beginning.

Magical midlife hunter

I just have to put it out there, I’m still #teamrobert all the way!! He is the lone lighthouse light piercing the storm that is Bree’s life. He’s a constant companion and the one permanent fixture she never has to second guess intentions for.
This book pushes Bree from Paris back to Savannah with the intentions of saving a “friend”, because we all know in Bree’s life no one gets left behind. Her friends are her world. Even if they may not be considered a true friend anymore she will go to bat for them and this book is no different. Of course the protagonist knows this of Bree and decides to use it against her.
Bree’s faith and trust in her friends is finally rattled and suddenly she’s questioning many main players intentions, but is she questioning the intentions of true right friends?! Shannon has this amazing ability to keep you guessing and questioning yourself along with Bree until all is finally revealed and you are left just as shattered as Bree.
Many ups, many downs, zombie fights and rat faced clowns! You will just have to read on to find out! Can’t wait for the next

Midlife Magic Hunter

So many men, monsters and magic… so little time… 😱

I try very hard to not give spoilers in my reviews but I must address the scene when Bree finally gets a little…
Holy Shmoley SPICY 🌶 🔥
I mean poor Bree and her cat have been an island for years!!! Alan was certainly no help and all the build up with “others” throughout this series, any woman would pass the hell out!
I found myself actually relieved for her!!! 🥵😆
Ok onto the review… This installment answered so many questions I have had and yet adds so many new ones. I found myself being paranoid about almost everyone around her and in the end was mostly happy about how it played out… mostly. (POSSIBLE SPOILER HERE>>> I really had wished a certain man had turned out to be shady for all the right reasons.) 😒

Anyway, it’s a great read and adds to the story and adventure of this series while leading us further down the rabbit hole of Bree and her crew. I found myself laughing out loud more than once and have many highlights of my favorite quotes.
I actually spit coffee in chapter six (if you know.. you know… 😏)
And giggled at sweet and sassy Feish with all her romance novel references. “Cats, Flowers & Squishy Bits” for the win!

The last line left me tapping my kindle thinking I must have a glitch… this can’t be where it ends… but indeed, as usual Shannon Mayer leaves me wanting more. And willing to wait because… dammit it’s a fun ride.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Though the non-swearing (duck instead of fuck) drives me absolutely fucking insane, I love this story. A 40-year old woman kicking supernatural ass and shaking off suitors is refreshing to read. She's having both the best and worst of adventures in spooky Savannah and I love all of her friends: a skeleton friend who drinks whiskey, Skeletor the horse who pops up out of the ground whenever you need him, a bigfoot who loves to bake, a river maiden just discovering spicy romance novels and brewing tea that makes you poop, a tiny fairy makeup and clothing guru, a sexy badboy werewolf, a feisty and loyal leprechaun, a giant shapeshifting spider who edits books for fun, sirens with incredible powers of seduction, wily old women witches, the most aggravating of fae, a sweet goblin protector who loves home decor, and her grandmother's witchy ghost. It's the most eclectic cast of characters, but all together they blend into a beautiful story.

This book ended in a heartbreaking cliffhanger, but I'm sure that the next book will be amazing. This series was my introduction to Shannon Mayer and I'm so happy to have discovered her writing. It's been fun getting lost in her worlds. Looking forward to book 8. ❤

Alright so let me explain

Listen, I'm giving this a 1 star because I've had it with this idiotic female lead...like seriously??? To be frickin 41 years old and making the mistakes she is, it's pitiful...I'm truly amazed that I've lasted 7 books in...I thoroughly enjoy the side characters, they are absolutely fantastic...Feish is my homie for life, kinkly is that unexpected friend, Suzy is just an all around bad@ss, and Robert is extra swoon worthy...Why she didn't pick him, I'll never understand...Crash is the idiotic choice, he's all flames desire without substance...Corb is dumb and desire and also, no substance...Remy came on way too hard too fast (again she's 41, she shouldn't have fallen for that)...So, this is where I end my journey with this series...I really want to see what happens to fish and if she ends up getting her eggs finally fertilized and the character Ivan, man he sounded fantastic...Gran and Penny will always be my faves, as well as Eric(gosh he would make a wonderful best friend)...all in all, the story isn't worth finishing...all the trouble she gets into and the secrecy surrounding her powers is just being drawn out wayyy too much...this could've been 4 books and been fantastic...but at 7, and we still don't know the extent of what she can do, sorry not good enough for me...I really really wanted to love this series but the main character just kept getting dumber...

I hate to say it but this one fell flat for me. I have enjoyed Bree and all her kooky and unique friends but some things are just getting old and drawn out. Sure you start getting more aches and pains ...and hot flashes...in your 40's...but come on! Almost every other page she's out of breath and popping anti-inflammatories! She is not THAT old! And the cutesy swearing, I get it, it's her "thing" but it is getting a little redundant, also.
Sure there was a little more romance in this one, but it , too, seemed like an aside until the story could pick up again and get back to the HUNTER portion of the plot. The most action was toward the end of the book....and then I felt there wasn't enough of that! Just thought it took too long to "get to the good stuff" and even that did not seem to push the plot along much.
3 stars because I've come so far and really want to see how Bree and her friend's journeys pan out, but disappointed. Hope the next one stands up better and returns to the style/content like the beginning of the series

I usually love this series. This one fell flat. It’s hard to believe in the idea of a middle aged female MC coming into her own empowerment and self-worth when every other page she can’t decide which MAN to put her trust in and be with. Like girl, you have other things to worry about! I’m all for the sexy-times to relieve a little stress but c’mon! Focus!

Also - not cool the way Remy’s character devolved so quickly. Yeah he’s a trickster, but to make him that awful!?! I wouldn’t trust my judgment in men ever again either!

Really hoping the next one is better … disappointed but committed to the series.

Just more of the same

I’ve tried really hard to like this series but it’s just not working out. The main character just repeats the same mistakes endlessly. Every book is her trying to choose which super hot guy to lust after and then getting betrayed by each of them in turn. Rinse & repeat. I’m also completely distracted by the childish cutesy-swears and the bizarre obsession with farts. On top of that is the random characters that all seem to have Irish accents for no apparent reason. The constant “Gawd!” and “Jaysus!” exclamations got old fast.

Midlife Magic Hunter is the continuation of Shannon Mayer's Forty Proof series and if you're not reading these books you are seriously missing out!
Bree is back and her first date in a long time...well, here comes Alan busting up in there in an undead body to get her attention. Seems like the voodoo queen Marge wants her to know something. But is Marge really looking to help Bree? No strings attached? Or is there something else going on? Seems like someone wants Bree to think that the Dark Council is after one of her "friends." But is that really the case or is this a red herring?
There is so much going on in this book and you're not going to be able to put it down. The pacing is excellent and will have you devouring this story as you read along. You'll be cheering for Bree and her friends as they go through a series of wild events that are really going to test them. Once again the group is about to see some changes of where someone will be left behind. It's so heartbreaking!
What's worse though is that it seems that there are few people that Bree can really trust. I need answers!!! You will too. Trust me. We're all going to need to know what exactly is going on with one particular individual because all is not what it seems.
I'm chomping at the bit for the next book in this series and trust me when I say it can't come soon enough. I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Honestly I am extremely disappointed. Book 6 rekindled the spark and this one snuffed it out faster than Bree talking about farting or being old. Bree is supposed to be this ahhhmazing guardians or something, but all she does is make stupid ass mistakes and messes shit up even more. The romance with Remy felt so forced. Her being extra speshul feels so forced. I’m tired of all the “she’s so old” talk. Like we get it…she’s in her 40’s she soooo old. (Insert eye roll). This book was another where lots of stuff happened, but nothing really happened. I feel like nothing in this book added remotely anything new to the story. Just more of Bree being a dumbass. It took me too long to actually finish it. I just didn’t care. But I did finish it. And I’ll probably read the next one when it comes out in a few months if I remember, but I sure hope the author gives the poor woman some actual growth and not more bullshit. Sorry if this is harsh…it just feels like she’s dragging a story out for nothing. I’d rather have a couple of books with actual good story and growth instead of several books of meh. So. Much. Filler.

The seventh installment in the Forty Proof series is one helluva ride!!
Bree, Crash, Robert, Jinx, Gran, Sarge, Robert and many of the great characters are back. I enjoyed the spicy scenes and there was a perfect amount of humor sprinkled throughout.
The story is action packed and it was so hard to put this book down once I started. I neglected everything! The author knows where to hit us! Right in the lady bits!!
If you’re looking for a paranormal romance with twist, then look no further. This series has it all. Found family, romance, paranormal critters, and amazing heroine and secondary characters.

Audible:
The narrator Lauren Fortgang is fantastic. Her voice is amazing!! I read this book awhile back but the narrators performance is amazing!! She not only elevates the book, she brings the characters to life!! I absolutely love it. Now to nurse this book hangover all over again.

Favorite quote:

“I would raze a thousand cities and let the world burn to keep you at my side.”

“Let him chase the cat, okay? Don’t just give him the flowers. Don’t give it up right away.”

I LOVE this series by Mayer because Bree, the female main character is everything we want to be in midlife: intelligent, honest, magical, takes no bs, with honor & integrity, fully embraces midlife, and has no ducks left to give. There have been several love interests so far in this series but only one spicy scene so far, till another one blessedly pops up in this book. Don’t worry though, Mayer breaks the fourth-wall by giving you fair warning if you want to skip ahead (though you really shouldn’t!).

The world-building in this series is AH-MAZING! So many characters (and creatures) in the supernatural world, yet she keeps adding more which makes it more exciting. The romantic interests make you wonder who she will ultimately choose, but the plot doesn’t leave room to focus on romance. At least we got SOME spice in this one, but she may never settle down in this series. The plot will certainly keep me enthralled though!

Shannon Mayer's "Midlife Magic Hunter" (Forty Proof #7) is a wonderfully original and quirky look at our heroine who is over 40 and starting over. I pissed myself laughing out loud all the way through. Shannon is a loose cannon when she writes and trust me you would not want her any other way. Shannon and the other Fab 13 are taking the world by storm by showing that being over 40 does not mean the end of life but something to be celebrated, pee pads and all. This brilliant story takes us on a journey where Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you are on the run with her every step of the way. With laughter and magic, ex husbands and demons, leprechauns, werewolves, skeletons and more and you have everything you could ever want in a story, now you just need a bottle of wine and a quiet place to lose yourself in Shannon's fantastic writing. Bring on the next book.

I absolutely adore this series. Maybe it’s because it is relatable? Not the magic / shifter / fantasy portion of the story, but we have a 40+, kick ass heroine who’s out to make a better life for herself and her friends. Shannon Mayer just gets her readers. We don’t all want the graphic language; we don’t all want the high spice in our reads (every time) and we all like action. SM literally tells you when there is some spicy content coming, and tells you how far to skip forward, and then recaps if you truly have missed anything within that chili-pepper content. In this story Bree is fighting to find key items to save Savannah from becoming overrun by evil dark lurkers, including scary clowns. Calling on all her friends, including Crash, Skeletor, & Robert she is determined to take charge and win this never-ending challenge. A fun Paranormal series that will carry you away from the world that just isn’t so much fun anymore.

Dating in your forties is not any easier for Bree. When you love bad boys, anything and everything can go wrong. Bree knows how to find trouble and trouble finds her. This is a great series and I think this series could be a great TV show or movie! I would LOVE to see it. Bree is in a love triangle and she needs to decide who she loves, eventually. As Bree tries to stop the dark counsel from making a spell that will end the world, action is around every corner. Can she stop the spell without losing more friends? This is a wonderful story and I also listened to most of it as a audio book, Lauren Fortgang is a great narrator. I'd love to learn from her. Anyone interested in action and ghosts, fey, witches, goblins, and more, you need to read this series!

Remy or Crash or both?

Of course, this was the big question for me being team Crash from the beginning, I was on the edge of my seat hoping Remy would go away!

Having said that, Remy is a nice addition to the gang and he made Bree happy so it was very nice to see after her issues with Alan, Crash and Corb.

Bree is still out to stop the dark council from releasing the vampire horde or is that what they are really up to? The puzzle becomes more confusing as they try to unravel the mystery.

Overall, there is a tightly woven storyline, lots of laughs, heartache and even some romance thrown in. A very entertaining addition to this series!

Bree is still quirky and I appreciate the older than usual character. But seven books into this series the cutesy swearing, constant complaining about her aches and pains, and age, are cringeworthy instead of amusing. It also took WAY too long to get to the good stuff. I needed more action a lot sooner and the enjoyable side characters were minimized too much. So I found myself skimming. Two books left, remains to be seen if I finish the series.

Just when you think it's safe to go back into the water.... what? That's a different story? Well, water does come into play a couple of times, so it fits. Just when I think this series can't get better, funnier, hotter, sexier, more exciting, the next book just floors me. I love these characters and all they are going through. It's like a Midlife Roller Coaster at times, but it's not predictable and keeps me guessing what's going to happen next. I can't decide who's team I'm on, am I Team Corb, Team Robert, Team Remy, Team Crash? From one chapter to the next something can happen to change my mind. Never a dull moment, that's for sure. Bring on the next book! I need to see what happens next!

Things are a bit more back on track with this book. I liked it better than the last in the series, but I still have some gripes. I absolutely did not like the “competition” between Remy and Crash. I get why it was there, but it still just didn’t sit right with me. Probably because we’re now 7 books into the series and this is the first time we get ANY sort of actual bedroom action and it was very underwhelming and with the wrong guy in my opinion (and probably Bree’s, too). The warning was also over the top - not needed and earned an eye roll from me.

This series is starting to get long in the tooth. I still really enjoy the fairly well-developed supporting characters and think world building is on point. However, we already had a lot that still needs to be resolved from basically the first book, and then this book threw a couple more big things in the mix. While I do appreciate a long series, I’m getting a little frustrated that so little progress has been made toward the main objective. I get that it’s huge, but again I’m struck with the sense of it just being another episode in a series rather than significant plot progression. It didn’t help that this book was noticeably shorter than the last. I’m sure it was on purpose due to the setup for the next major conflict, which just furthers my argument about the series being heavily episodic.

One good thing in this book is that Bree has FINALLY figured out who she wants to be with and fight for. It’s not a surprise at all, but I am glad that I hopefully no longer have to read any more about her agonizing over which guy she really likes the most because that really got old.
