Sure, being one of the deadliest assassins in the galaxy had its perks, but even the mightiest warrior could have a bad day. In this case, it was looking to be enough of them to fill an entire calendar.
It seemed the unthinkable had happened. Someone had actually targeted the Ghalian, an order of assassins known and feared across the systems. It was madness. Only a fool would go after the likes of them. But, it seemed, the galaxy had no shortage of fools.
Retaliation most bloody was in order, and one man stood ready to spring into action. Hozark was his name, and he was no ordinary man. He was a Master Ghalian, an assassin skilled in the ways of death. Practical, mechanical, magical, to him it made no difference. One way or another, he would get to the bottom of the attack and turn the tables on whoever dared strike out at his brothers and sisters.
Or so he thought until someone quite unexpected reared their head. An appearance that gave him pause. Someone he had thought long dead. His former lover. A revelation like that could throw even a master assassin for a loop. That she too was an assassin only complicated things more.
There was far more at play than was apparent on the surface and Hozark would require all of his wits and skill to get to the bottom of it. And he most surely intended to do just that, no matter how high the body count. He just hoped to do so before more of his kin fell victim to the nefarious plot.
A sci-fantasy adventure across space, with magic, star ships, sword battles, treachery, deadly beasts, and, of course, a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm.
Scott Baron is an American author with a penchant for oddball stories with O. Henry-esque twists.
Born in Hollywood, Baron credits growing up in Los Angeles with skewing his humor towards the offbeat and absurd. He studied abroad in Italy during his college years, returning to Los Angeles to work in the film industry as an on-set medic. In addition to writing shorts and novels, Baron is also a screenwriter of both feature and television scripts.
A fun popcorn-flick style scifi adventure. However there was some cognitive dissonance when it came to certain characters behaviors, seemed like the author makes them behave in order to progress the plot, rather than how they would ACTUALLY react. It sort of reminds me of a B-rated horror film. If you turn off your brain, it's fun, but sometime the characters just do the stupidest things for no conceivable reason other than to get themselves into the next "situation", which makes it harder to empathize with them
What a fantastic set of books. Brilliant characters, excellent storyline with really good fight scenes. Pirate and big bad guys, what more could you want. Gary Challenger from Devon UK.
I liked the series overall. The ending had some real issues. I don't think anyone will see the ending coming because it was really random. Overall I did like it though just didn't stick the landing.
Early on I notice there weren't many descriptions of anything. I had a hard time picturing what the ships and people looked like. He probably did this so everyone could makeup their own world. However, he became more descriptive with each book. By the end of the series I still wasn't sure what the ships looked like but I had clearer idea of the people.
There was one character that I liked but think she shouldn't have been added. She was basically a MacGuffin that moved the plot but in a unnatural way. It is like if you were reading the three little pigs but in the last house the big bad wolf was stopped by optimus prime instead of the house being made of brick. Again I liked the character but she is so jarring. Kind of makes me wonder if the author was forced to end the series early.
Oh I didn't say anything good about the book. Well the book is like Assassin Creed but in space and the assassins are more like jedi knights. Also magic rules the universe instead of science. They use magic to fly through space, clean their clothes, murder people, save people, and so on and so on. Maybe the closes things I can think of is SpellJammers but without all the space monsters. There are creatures but not many.
There are not enough words to express how wonderful this five book series is in its story of Hozark!!! There are quiet, almost meditative, times in the story, but mostly action scene after action scene that will keep you glued to reading chapters so you will know what has happened! Side characters abound, some of good character and strong spirited, others so evil and malicious and sneaky you’ll want to jump in the story to help take out the villains!!! I highly recommend this series, and for that matter, ALL of Scott Baron’s excellent wonderful fantasy and SciFi series!!!
What a collection ,absolutely brilliant had me hooked after a few pages. What a mix of characters ,Assassins,Pirates,Magical beings, and a really good plot line Enthralling from the start, I am looking forward to reading more from this author. I would love to see a follow up on some of the Characters such as Bus & Henni, and the growth of Hap, and with the Intriguing introduction at the end of Hozarks& Samaras son a follow up on his training /life.
Great value for a box set. I’m mainly reviewing the 5th book because that is the only one I haven’t reviewed yet. This is a great conclusion to the series. You get all the resolution that you could want.
Well I saw the ending coming. That’s not a bad thing. Had it been done differently I would’ve been upset at 2 missed opportunities. I wasn’t sure about fantasy space travel. No sci-fi at all really. I’m happy to be wrong this time. The author did well. Thank you for this treat of a series.
Space Assassins Box Set is a solid read. Character development and pacing supported an enjoyable storyline. These stories would make an excellent Netflix or Amazon series.
I love the character development, the plot twists, the journey and the world developments. If you like Star Wars and Harry Potter then this is the series for you, space adventures combined with magic the best combination anyone could ask for
I really enjoyed this series, it was a good story that followed a great path. A lot of books end up jumping around a lot and Scott kept it focused on the main story. Looking forward to trying more of his books.
Absolutely spellbinding. Thoroughly enjoyed all the books, even if I did binge read and give myself eyestrain! Recommended to anyone with an imagination. Ties in nicely with the Charlie Books and the latest Assassins series. Nice to get some back stories (no spoilers!)
Not bad, world building is interesting. They took magic as a replacement for physics? I had a hard time staying into the story with all the inappropriate references to actual life... Such as "pavlovian"
These are the first novels I have read by Scott Baron but will definitely read more. I enjoyed the various characters and how alive they became in reading.
Continuous storyline that offers clues if read closely, or foreshadowing, of future events. Great overall writing to keep track of, and meet those disparate plotlines. They don't all lead to the same conclusion or even the same timeframe in the story. Great writing!
I stumbled upon this in audiobook form and it held my attention for 37-1/2 hours. It was a well paced story that was easy to listen to, with the right amount of nonsense that kept me entertained.
What a great story in the scope of origins. A full back story with a twist that opens the realms of magical worlds. I hope that somehow Henni can continue her story.
