Prophetic Integrity: Aligning Our Words with God's Word

Rate this book
What happens when prophets are wrong?

In 2020, many Christians claiming to be prophets said God told them that Donald Trump would be re-elected as president. Over thirty years before that, one the famous Kansas City Prophets, Paul Cain, prophesied that there would be a revival in London in 1990, which never came to pass. These examples make us

What happens when prophets get it wrong? Are there consequences for misleading God's people? What would a genuine prophet look like today? And how can you tell a false prophet from a genuine one?

In recent years, misjudgments among Charismatic Christians claiming to speak for God as well as moral failures within Evangelicalism have resulted in a crisis of belief. In Prophetic Integrity, bestselling author and speaker, R.T. Kendall gives a warning to those speaking in God's name and offers a way forward in trusting God despite the failures of the church.

To unpack this difficult topic, Kendall, a self-described "Reformed charismatic," relates accounts of visions and supernatural experiences and shares stories and thoughts about Christian leaders that he knew personally, such as Paul Cain and Ravi Zacharias. He gives examples of good and bad prophecies and teaches a biblical and theologically-sound understanding of prophetic gifting and use.

Prophetic Integrity is a book for those who believe that God still speaks today but have serious questions about those within the church that identify as prophets. It's a call for honesty, vulnerability, and repentance; and it speaks to Christians of many different traditions, including Charismatic and Evangelical.

Discerning Christians of many different traditions can and must take both God's word and the gift of prophecy seriously and recognize how humans can abuse such gifts or use them to advance God's Kingdom.

Enjoyed so much. Specifically the topics of God’s glory, humility, how to practice the prophetic, the importance of the language we use. I appreciate his speaking to both camps, cessationists and charismatics, and giving lots of verses for a middle ground. The rebuke for open theism and calling out how the prophetic has been misused was insightful. Appreciated his emphasis on the Bible and the necessity for prophecy to align with the Bible. Also appreciated the “seven levels” and how to think about / practice / and have appropriate and biblical guardrails for the prophetic. Would read again and would recommend.

I sat down expecting to get a nice thesis on the way prophecy can healthily operate within the church body, and I left with a masterclass on God’s glory, promises, and heart for pure character in his church.

It was refreshing to read a book that fully embraces powerful prophetic gifting that also calls for vulnerability, transparency, and accountability in its operation. I also loved his focus on how prophecy affects the church body as a whole rather than just providing framework for its Biblical operation within a Sunday service.

RT Kendall is wise, endearing, and packs this book full of real life experience and mistakes - making this book an extremely useful and pertinent read for the Western American church (especially during an election year).

I am encouraged and will be revisiting often!

Sometimes you read a book by a Christian author and realize that it contains much greater spiritual depth than you expected. This is such a book. I loved Kendall’s insights on contemporary events and his applications of Scripture to those events. I was also intrigued by his unique theological contributions to understanding the nature of prophecy. Kendall’s “7 Levels” were creative and, while I don’t know that I’d subscribe completely to the model, I find it helpful as a launching pad into deeper discussions about the topic. What really drew me in were Kendall’s stories from his personal life and ministry. His diverse theological background, his ministry with Paul Cain and the “Kansas City Prophets”, and his experiences meeting Yasser Arafat and working with Ravi Zacharias, were both illuminating as well as shocking at times. Overall, this is an excellent book, and I highly recommend it to all who wish to make sense of contemporary prophecy an the times!

A powerful and thorough critique of the charismatic and evangelical Church of today. While I am uncertain as to whether I will come to the same conclusions as Kendall, his call to be more thoughtful when sharing under God's name and to be more well read in Scripture are convicting for me.

What a great book

I loved this book and the truth that is in it. The truth about God and His ways. The truth about integrity, the truth about forgiveness and the truth about sin. One of the best parts was time between sin and repentance of that sin

Regardless whether you hold to cessationism or believe spiritual gifts are for today, this book is for both camps. RT Kendall does a great job of challenging Christians to return to a biblical practice of making the Scriptures the church's authority on truth, while not neglecting the direct, immediate witness of the Holy Spirit, and how He chooses to use us as individuals.

After living through the prophetic fiasco surrounding the last presidential election, I knew that this would be a must-read book for me. What do we do when those operating in the prophetic end up being wrong? Should we stop operating in this Biblical gift?

Something that I carried into this read was an immense gratitude for RT Kendall's work. His Total Forgiveness book is one that I find myself recommending every few months, and it's one that I've seen God use to bring incredible healing to those who've been wounded by others. There are rich teaching moments that Kendall lines out in Prophetic Integrity - Chapter 8's teaching on oaths and promises is worth the price of the book itself! I also really appreciated the candor with which Kendall both approaches the enormous prophetic errors surrounding 2020, as well as his plea for those who've erred to take steps of repentance. However, something that I cannot find myself agreeing with is Kendall's conclusion that God has taken His hand of blessing off of the Church. Kendall does work hard to try to prove this point, but this incredibly serious statement is one that I cannot find Biblical recourse for.

All that being said, I would still recommend this book for those looking to learn about the prophetic and receive answers and direction after experiencing errors in the prophetic realm. Despite the disagreement I mentioned before, Kendall is a source that I trust and that I will continue to read.

Praise God for this book! There is plenty of wisdom and truth within this book, which serves as a wake-up call to today’s church.

Taking the LORD’s name in vain by prophesying falsely while tying in “the LORD told me/the Holy Spirit told me…” is a serious issue that harms the charismatic church (as well as the evangelical church). We are called to be humble, ready to apologize, and sensitive to God’s Spirit rather than upsetting the Spirit through our stubbornness.

In our times, prophets among the charismatic movement seem to have much Spirit but little Truth, often leading to double-lives of sin. God will punish and expose such people. We are called to worship in Spirit and Truth (God’s Word), not just one or the other. When a generation or worshippers begin to worship in Spirit and in Truth, revival will follow!

I believe Gen Z can be a generation of revival after witnessing the fire and anointing God has already brought to this generation. May God bless us and strengthen us to be found as true worshippers when He returns!

Phenomenal book! One of the best I’ve read in recent memory, and RT has earned a top spot on my list of favorite authors.

With gentle and humble trepidation, he poses some much-needed, challenging, and thought-provoking questions without imposing his own answers or thoughts upon the reader. His humility leaves room for the reader to ponder what’s true and come to their own conclusions.

So much to receive from this one. Extremely timely and an important conversation for the broader Church to be having.

Truthfully I think this should be mandatory reading for any Christian exploring the prophetic or broader charismatic side of the Christian walk.

I have no clue what to do with this book.

It has some amazing statements about theology. Seriously, great stuff.

It also reads like a prophetic text against many within the Charismatic Movement. Ok, fair enough.

Kendall also jumps around to targeting Open Theism…which feels out of place?

The author makes some over-generalizations about the second century church and salvation by faith alone.

The book is void of footnotes or endnotes.

It desperately needed editing.

Just a wild ride with some good stuff scattered throughout.

Would not recommend…but maybe I would? Sheesh.

Today’s Warning for Now and Tomorrow

R.T. writes with a prophet’s voice and a pastor’s heart. He warns the would-be reader to live a passionate balanced life; Word and Spirit. His subjective overview of both camps may be too simplistic for many, however, he deals justly with the dynamics that separate us within the Body of Christ. As a fellow Reformed Charismatic I appreciate his sensitivity to the Spirit while remaining theologically conservative and grounded. A must read for both Word and Spirit believers.

Spot on Dr. Kendall! Prophets be honest with yourself, God and the public! You prophets got the last election wrong and you refuse to admit! If you’re going to say, “Thus saith the LORD!” You better be sure you’ve heard the Lord! I appreciate his balanced emphasis upon the Word and the Spirit! I’ve been in both worlds, Spirit and Word, and the tendency is leanings in one direction or other! Both need to be experienced! A very compelling read! An honest evaluation of each side of Word and Spirit divide!

Man, praise God for speaking through R.T. Kendall! This book is dense and has so much important wisdom for the moment our church lives in. This is not a book bashing the gift of prophecy or charismatics or choosing one side or the other. This is a book affirming the ability of the Holy Spirit to bring both the fruits of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. A must read, whether you are interested in prophecy or not! I believe this can unite a lot of people in the church!

Kendall believes that another pandemic worse than COVID 19 would still not wake people up. I fear for this to be truth. The book explains that through scripture, prophets are many. Prophets assure salvation in the book of Hebrew. Prophets give notice of a future answered prayer in the books of Mark and John. A prophecy makes God look good rather than the prophet. Otherwise one would be breaking the 3rd commandment, "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain".

Greatly recommend this book for both evangelicals and charismatics. It is a great exhortation for the Church walk in both Spirit and in Truth. This book gives a good way forward to those who have questions about the usage of prophetic gifts in the body of Christ. It is a humbling read for believers to honour God's name, remain faithful, honest and teachable.

This is a 'must read ' for all Christians, especially those of the 'Charismatic' variety like me. We all know that the Bible warns us of subtle deceptions prevalent in the 'last' days. R.T Kendall discusses what he has discerned in the contemporary church, as far as false teaching is concerned.
A very encouraging and thought provoking read.

Thought Provoking

I gave this book 5 stars because it is challenging and thought provoking. I must admit there are some areas in the author's theology that l am not in agreement with but l do believe Bro. Kendall has earned the right to be heard and provides a needed call for humility and repentance in light of the pathetic state of the prophetic ministry today.

The call to prophetic integrity is a called to be honest and vulnerable, depending when you get things wrong. However, if we avoid this honesty, vulnerability, and repentance, revival will be postponed, or we may be prevented from seeing the next spiritual awakening.

A Wake-Up Call for United States’ Christians—Liberal, Evangelical, and Charismatic

This is the most honest, informative book I have read in a long time — both truth-telling for the glory of God and also personally convicting. If you want to see the glory of God manifested in our country, those around you, and yourself; you must read it. If you want to hear sound doctrine, this book is for you. If you want your “ears tickled …by [teaching] in accordance with your own desires,” this book is not for you (2 Timothy 4:3).

Very interesting. A brief history on some of the modern prophetic movement from a transatlantic perspective but also good thoughts on why we should never prophesy with the type of phrases like ‘The Lord Says’.

Genuinely one of the most fascinating books I have ever opened. It speaks to the line we tow between what is biblically accurate in the world of the Holy Spirit, specifically prophecy, and what is plain “wacky.” The author has a very median tone and doesn’t lean heavily to a specific theological positioning. He points to strengths and weaknesses within both sides and it is helpful for any and all believers in their understanding of the gifts of the Spirit.
