With Every Breath

Rate this book
On a freezing cold January morning at the turn of the millennium, two police officers respond to a house call from a concerned member of the public. What they find when they arrive there that night is so incomprehensible and shocking, it will go on to define the people from a small city in the north of England, and encapsulate a spirit and desire to protect and help those who need it most.

With Every Breath is a tale of human spirit against adversity - of hope over despair.

Never give up on life and never give up on those who need you.

This book is undoubtedly a favorite. The story starts with an incomprehensible discovery by two law enforcement individuals and goes on to follow the life of a young girl who overcomes many obstacles to make an enormous impact on a community.

The ending brought tears to my eyes, seriously. I could vividly picture this sweet girl Joy throughout the book. So wonderfully written in both content and style. I love the UK language, phrases and style. I've never read an UK author before this and the quirky phrases give the story a unique personality for this USA reader. I would recommend this book without reservations!!! I will be reading this author’s previous works!

An absolutely brilliant, heartbreaking but warm book! It captured me from the first word to the last! My emotions were all over the place. Love, anger and complete admiration for Joy. I love the way this story was told; I just couldn’t put it down! Bawled my eyes out at the end. Bittersweet. Bravo to the author!

will grab you in all the feels

What a great emotional read! If you give a book 5 stars like me for all the feels, it’s a worthy read.
I would recommend this book to anyone above 18. Spoilers ⬇️

Will leave you sad, happy, laugh, cry, mad. Wondering why punishment never matches the crime. A very dramatic tale of child abuse, miracles, and an end to all good things. The story of how a child loved life and what she enjoyed after healing.

PC James Hanrahan with partner Lorraine Gallagher were called out to investigate a dwelling in Greengarth. On arrival, the scene that met them was a house in severe domestic squalar, putrid from major neglect, rubbish and waste of variuos kinds everywhere. But what they found in the garden was beyond belief.
A story told through the eyes of all different people, many professionals, who all had a major part in the life of an abandoned child. Her character is so strong, her will and determination paramount in attaining her mountainous goals which the author describes in great detail and you are willing her on every step of the way.
A unique way of telling the tale, it's like you are having the conversation with the people yourself but it's also like a diary of their own events. This book takes you on a mamouth journey through a plethora of emotions and really stirs up strong feelings derived from the circumstances presented as you progress through this world of fiction which is surrounded by truth. This is a totally believable story, realistic in its entirity, a powerful message given of a community that rallies after the unfolding of darkest events. Magnificent work by an extremely talented author!

I have read a few books by this author and have to say this book is by far his best.
I like the writing style and the way real places and events are used in the book. Also he includes real people as characters, family friends and book club members.I think that is quite unique.
The book is centered around Joy the only fictional character.Joy is a little girl whose story starts with her being found barely hanging on to life.It follows her recovery and all the people she meets along the way.It shows her strength and determination to survive and she touches the hearts of everyone she meets.
This book grabs you from page one,it's intriguing and emotional.I smiled to myself a few times while reading, aswell as shedding a few tears.
I would definitely recommend this book. It's a must read.

This book is about a child that is left for dead after a drug raid. It follows her there from the moment she is found until the end of her elementary school days. I loved how the story was told from the different perspectives of those who helped and worked with the child. I don't wanna say too much to give anything away but it's a very feel good story after suck a sad beginning.

Not a dry eye in the house!

Wow is all I can say. This book has left me completely speechless and with a tear in my eye.
Not to give to much away regarding the book, but it reads like a documentary of a little girl called Joy Gibson. She had a great effect on everyone she came into contact considering everything she had went through in her short little life.
Peter once again draws me in to his book and I admire the way he tells a story that is fictional but you would never know if you weren't told. A fantastic book that I highly recommend to everyone.

Joy ❤️

This beautiful book was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. We follow the journey of a little miracle child called Joy, who survived the unthinkable. Told from the perspectives of people who's lives she touched. I cried so much at the strength and resilience of this little girl, the love of a community, and the impact one special human can have on the world. This book broke me into a million pieces, a true testament to the authors writing. Written with care and respect. It is honest and raw and moving. I'm glad I read it.

Get your hankies at the ready for this absolute emotional rollercoaster of a novel. Once I started reading, I just couldn’t put it down - the characters felt like family and I cried tears of sadness and happiness alongside them - occasionally at the same time! By far the best book I’ve read in a long while! Looking forward to the authors next book.

As I started reading this book, I wasn’t sure how I was feeling about the writing style. As I read further I was proven wrong. This is a beautiful story that I can’t imagine being written any other way. This tale takes on many forms as you follow the view from everyone who had been involved in a little girls rescue, from the Police all the way to the parents at her new home. This story follows the life of young Joy, who had been left for dead in a squatter house and found by police on a call one night after receiving complaints of a disturbance. It takes you on a lovely journey of self-determination and the perseverance to survive.

Joy is a beautiful child that doesn’t deserve the life path she has been put on. When the Officers rescue her from the house, everyone does everything in their power to make sure that this little girl has the best possible life from there on out. After her time in the hospital and care of the nurses, her story begins to progress to her settling into her new life at a new home, with new parents and her first school.

This story will give you the best of all worlds. It has ups and downs and can be very emotional at times. I really enjoyed Joy herself, as nothing could break her mood. With all the terrible things she suffered in life, she was always a bright, cheerful child, excited for her next adventure.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a survival stories. Also recommended for anyone who wants to try something new and well written.

A Feelgood Book About A Very Gritty Topic

I found this book captivating and gripping from the start. It tells the tale of a foundling from the points of view of those who impacted her life and rehabilitation – and vice versa. The conversational style in which the story unfolds makes it all the more compelling. The characters were all relatable and believable, and it was impossible not to love and care about them all. I could not put this book down.

The story resonates with high-profile cases of child neglect, and this book cleverly brings to light the conflicts and difficulties faced by professionals in the police, social services, NHS and education systems. It also highlights wonderfully well how the dedication and goodwill of individuals hold together these under-funded and frequently criticised services as they tread fine lines of propriety, and attempt to do the right thing in a complex case.

In addition, the book showcased the dreadful damage that can be inflicted when individuals and organisations are subjected to Trial by Tabloid. A scourge fuelled by a public thirst for tittle tattle, with scant regard for truth or the profound consequences for real people’s lives.

Really, we should all boycott the tabloids, who unashamedly leave behind a trail of devastation as they move on to tear their next victim to shreds in the name of entertainment – and profit.

Yet, despite the diabolically dark subject and themes, I found this an uplifting, if emotional, read. It serves as a reminder that, although you can’t escape everything that is bad, there is always hope and goodness in the world.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Emothional

This story is incredibly emotional from the very first page until the last. It has moments that pulls up the very fabric of your soul. It questions the world we live in but shines a vivid light on the beauty that surrounds us and we take for granted. Seeing the work through the eyes of a child is always mesmerising but this was truly enchanting. For all the pain, there are a million people willing to help. And this statement is so true and simply not said enough. Although this story is heartwrenching, it's also heartwarming and that is no easy feat. My respect for this author is huge, in being able to achieve that. But if you expect to read this book without shedding a tear, then you best fill your pockets full of tissues, because you're in for a ride that you'll never forget.

Do not miss this book.

WOW! This is a wonderful read, do not miss it!
When a little girl is found under a hedge by a young policeman, nothing could have prepared him for the state she was in.
Almost frozen to death, badly beaten, neglected, and almost starved to death, he and the paramedics didn't expect the little girl to survive.
But survive she did! Her bravery along with a will to live reduced the nurses and other medical staff to tears.

I'm not going to say anymore about this heartbreaking, gut - wrenching story because I don't want to write any spoilers. But it reduced me to tears more than once. An inspiring read about a very courageous little girl who touched the hearts of everyone who came into contact with her.

Highly recommended. Five stars!

This book got me so Emotional. The story of a bright brilliant girl who went through a horrible and traumatic experience, and still come out with a positive outlook on life with the heart to help others. As much as we know the challenges Joy has to face daily the ending broke my heart in to pieces. For me this book hits home because of the sexual violence that happens every single day on my country South Africa.

This was meant to be an emotional read. And it was. But the overinsistence on the emotionalism turned me off. The circumstances were gut wrenching enough without us having to be continually told how 'good' and 'beautiful' the little girl is. The word 'beautiful' in every other sentence began to annoy me. I think if the story had been left to unfold without it constantly telling the reader how they were supposed to feel, I might have felt more.
