The White Scars are among the most uncompromising of all the Space Marines Chapters – once they decide upon a course of action, only death will stay their hand.
READ IT BECAUSE This omnibus includes two novels, two novellas, and two short stories, each revealing a different side to the fierce sons of the Great Khan.
THE STORY The White Scars, peerless huntsmen, stalkers of the plains and bearers of the storm's fury, ride out to protect the Imperium from the dark powers of Chaos and the machinations of the foul xenos. Through the teachings of their Primarch, Jaghatai Khan, these warriors temper ferocity with keen wisdom. To face them on one of mankind's myriad battlefields is to know death, for should a survivor escape with their life, they will not do so for long. Kor'sarro Khan, Master of the Hunt, cannot be outrun.
Consists of the following novellas and short stories:
- Hunt for Voldorius, by Andy Hoare - The Last Hunt, by Robbie MacNiven - Blood Oath, by Phil Kelly - Hunter's Snare, by Josh Reynolds - The Thrill of The Hunt, by Anthony Reynolds - Kor'sarro Khan: Huntmaster, by Graeme Lyon
“Masters of the Hunt” is a collection of most the 40k stories focusing on the White Scars. Four of the six stories feature Kor’sarro khan as the protagonist, but Joghaten khan also receives a lot of fleshing out because his story is relatively quite large.
“The Hunt for Voldorius” is by far the weakest of the longer stories included the omnibus. The plot is exciting and well paced but the characterisation and the dialogue are terrible. The read is a little cringeworthy at times but still entertaining.
“The Last Hunt” focuses on Joghaten Khan of the Tulwar brotherhood in his fight against the tyranids. This is an excellent book in every respect, possibly the best portrayal of the White Scars in 40k. This is also the longest story in the omnibus.
“Blood Oath” and “Hunter’s Snare” are short stories that detail Kor’sarro khan’s fight against the Tau and his rivalry with Commander Shadowsun. They’re both very enjoyable and make up for the poor characterisation Kor’sarro got in “The Hunt for Voldorius”. “Hunter’s Snare” is particularly good, on par with “The Last Hunt” for my favourite depiction of the White Scars in 40k.
The last two stories, “The Thrill of the Hunt” and “Kor’sarro Khan: Huntmaster” are only a few pages long, more snapshots than proper short stories. “The Thrill of the Hunt” is the better of the two and feels more satisfying in its briefness.
All in all, I would say this is a good collection and worth the purchase, even though I already owned a copy of “The Last Hunt”. I vastly prefer having a paper omnibus to juggling multiple tiny ebooks. These stories also thematically work well together, focusing on the White Scars as hunters. If you like the White Scars, you’ll enjoy reading this collection.
