Take Charge Series #3

Miss Darcy Takes Charge: A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Miss Georgiana Darcy in this telling, is not your garden variety victim, as she is often portrayed.

Before her beloved mother died, Georgiana (Gigi) is charged with looking after her brother and father and not allowing them to wallow in self-pity and grief. The young girl takes her mother’s instructions to heart.

As in canon, George Wickham entertains Miss Darcy as a young girl engendering a friendship. However, that is where the similarities end. She overhears and sees some things which force her to begin to assert herself.

Wickham is sent from Pemberley, at what he believes, is his erstwhile friend Fitzwilliam Darcy turning his father against him.

When her father joins her mother in heaven, her life changes once again, now left in the guardianship of her brother and cousin, Richard Fitzwilliam.

Mrs. Younge is employed by Miss Darcy’s guardians and to Ramsgate they go. There she meets her good friend’s mother, Mrs. Felicity Burnett and the cousin she has wanted to meet for some time now, Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Ramsgate is very different from canon as are the results. Enjoy reading of the way Georgiana Darcy’s taking charge affects her life and the lives of those around her.

I have three children and after a disastrous first marriage I found my soul mate who I thought that was lost to me over 25 years ago. I recently married the love of my life. I live with my soul mate in Australasia and have three pets, two cats, Darcy and Bingley and a golden lab, Honey.

Like many high school students, Pride and Prejudice was assigned to me in an English literature class. It was not my favourite book, but I read it as I had to. I forgot about the book until in my 30’s when I saw and fell in love with the 1995 Pride and Prejudice version made for TV in England, and purchased a copy of the DVD that is now much played.

The tipping point was the 2005 big screen adaption of P&P. Not long after seeing it I found and read the complete works of Jane Austen on Amazon, starting with Pride and Prejudice. The latter book is by far my favourite. After I read it three of four times over, I wistfully said to myself: ‘it is a great pity that Miss Austen never wrote a sequel to her seminal novel.' One day I was searching Kindle books and for the fun of it I entered “Pride and Prejudice Sequel’ into the search not expecting any results.

The rest is history. I discovered the JAFF community and books. I became a veracious reader of JAFF books and once I had devoured all of the sequels and continuations that I could find, I read my first variation. I had been resisting variations wrongly thinking that I would not enjoy them as much as the sequels. Boy, was I ever wrong! Today I am the proud owner of well over 1,000 JAFF novels that I have purchased on Amazon. 'A Change of Fortunes' is my first book that I wrote. There are a number of others on the way.

>>Rating: MA: due to adult themes discussed and described, violence, murder[s], language.
>>Angst Level: low-to-medium as tensions rose due to speculation of just what the SBRB would do. Yeah, he was there.
>>Source: borrowed from KU [1-29-22] with no expectations of a review. The views and opinions expressed are my own.
>>Trope: Ramsgate: Bennet family has connections: different romantic pairings from canon.
>>Recommendation: It was something different and I enjoyed a strong and smart Miss Darcy.

“No one can express who you are and what you stand for more than you do. Don’t leave that to chance or others. If you do so, the likelihood of other people misgauging you is high. Take charge!” –Assegid Habtewold

There are several books in the Take Charge Series. This book centered around Miss Georgiana Darcy and how she took charge of her life and that of her family. Let’s just say this wunderkind was amazing and nearly had superpowers. Her instincts were on point. Her ability to sense when something wasn’t as it should be was spot on… such as… Mrs. Younge. OMG! That lady was no lady and she was a piece of work. She was linked with several unsavory characters that had a plan and thought it was foolproof. I will say… the author certainly was creative with the machinations of Miss Darcy in her strategies in planning the downfall of her companion. I suppose growing up with a military-minded cousin, little Miss Georgiana learned a few tricks as they played their games. She was pretty sharp.

“You just can’t let life happen to you; you have to make life happen.” –Idowu Koyenikan, Wealth for All: Living a Life of Success at the Edge of Your Ability

There were several threads running through this story: The Bennet family was somewhat subdued and had connections that even Darcy couldn’t overlook. His story arc with Elizabeth took a different turn but was enjoyable nonetheless. Thanks to the author for not dragging out a misunderstanding between ODC. I hate when that happens and it takes up half of the book. This was nicely done. There were several pairings that deviated from canon and were handled mostly off the page. In fact, a lot happened off the page with mostly telling and not showing.

Miss Caroline Bingley: Someone needs to call security. That termagant was a mess. Bingley tried his best to defuse the explosive nature of his sister. He and sister Louisa could only do so much with her. In the end, they had to allow their sister to reap the harvest of her own downfall. La!
*** Spoiler *** *** End Spoiler ***

Lady Catherine was insane… just saying. She was the fuel that fed the disaster throughout this story. She wanted what she wanted and nothing anyone said made a difference. She would not be turned from her course. What she did to her poor daughter was horrid. In the end, she would reap her own harvest from her despicable actions.

Wickham: villain poster boy of the month. LA! This guy could not get a break. From the time he was old enough to realize girls were different than boys, he was headed for disaster. Everything he touched was tainted and destroyed. At least the author let Darcy senior discover his proclivities early enough to kick that piece of trash off Pemberley's property. However, like mold and mildew, he would not go away and kept infringing on the lives of the Darcy siblings.

What I didn’t like: it was too long and full of TMI [too-much-information]. Our author seemed to have a thing about wrapping up all the loose ends by making sure everyone… everyone… was paired up. It then went into great detail with who was married to whom, how many kids they had, their names and ages, and everyone was given a HEA. Well, except the villains who could not be redeemed. They were given a variety of horrid repercussions to their actions.

SPOILERS IN REVIEW

So much is changed in this book it’s not really a Pride and Prejudice story.

Enjoyable enough although I won’t read it again. It got downgraded a star because of uniformly modern dialogue; including the name Tiffany, which this author loves. That was not a Regency era name.

She constantly uses shrew and harridan to refer to the usual suspects: Lady Catherine and Miss Bingley. I find this dehumanizing. It would be misogynistic except Wickham constantly calls Darcy a prig.

The use of commas was very random, including separating a subject and verb.

When we get to Wickham impersonation of Mr Collins, the author insults the readers’s intelligence by having cousin appear in italics every single time. I may not have the best memory but I can keep up with a plot.

Over the top villains.

Georgiana is strong

Georgiana is more aware of people around her and feels there is something wrong about her companion, Mrs. Young. Ramsgate threat is interrupted by her and some friends, lots of new characters and Lizzy is called out often about her prejudices. Low angst but pleasant story.

SPOILERS
I thought the plot where Wickham was not punished after Ramsgate was ridiculous.

Interesting intriguing emotional funny

Loved the strong, independent Gigi (Georgianna) that was written. I found that this author comes up with relatively new ways to make characters better. I enjoyed the set down, but really enjoyed the inter dialogue and change of Caroline. Still had villains, they were worse. Clean and well written. Highly recommend to read

Miss Darcy Takes Charge - (Take Charge Series

Another great Takes Charge book. I would not have believed Georgiana Darcy the wit and backbone of steel if Shana hadn’t written it! Wow, the girl’s intuitive sense kept her three steps ahead of those trying to hurt her and her brother. She was able to sense things weren’t right with just glancing at her enemies and seeming predict what was going to happen before it did. Of course, as a young girl she witnessed first hand what an evil conniving person Wickham was so when his perfidious self tries to pull the wool over her eyes, her eyes are wide open. Pair her insights with Elizabeth Bennet’s wits and all of Lady Catherine’s plans involving Mrs. Younge, Wickham, and her sycophantic parson didn’t have a chance to come to fruition. The Bennets have better family connections in this story, and her cousin, Beth and she are extremely close. Jane is betrothed to her eldest cousin, David and Mary is betrothed to her cousin, Nicolas. ODC finds their way to love with only a few hiccups being smoothed out by her Aunt Felicity Burnett, the mother of Beth, David, and Nickolas. Beth is betrothed to Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam. Caroline Bingley invites I herself to Pemberley after being told that SHE was not invited, and completely is humiliated by those gathered. After being set to her aunt’ home she eventually realizes that her misfortunes are because of her actions and faults, and makes a runaround apologetic to all she has annihilated. George Wickham tries one more time to gain money, but his efforts meet with failure. Because he ended Collins, life, he finally gets his just ending at the end of a rope. All the other Bennett daughters and Georgiana find their HEA as the story ends. I think what makes this series so enjoyable, well except for the writing of the tales, is the fact that the acceptance between families within the story besides the rank of its members (the well so far). Good port and chess players seem to help too!

Let me start out by saying Miss Darcy Takes Charge (MDTC) had much fewer errors — at least that I noticed — than the previous two books, so I didn’t feel the need to remove a star from its rating.

This plot was new to me. I enjoyed the original characters and the Georgiana-centric story. Lizzy and Gigi have a believable introduction, given how much they know about each other before meeting, and their characters are similar enough for a friendship to blossom despite how little time they know each other.

My biggest issue with the story is that Georgiana seems far too put-together for her age. While she’s 15/16 in this story, as she was in canon, she acts like a woman in her 20s. Had some major event happened to mature her more quickly, I could have better believed it. However, since her early life wasn’t significantly different than the original, it doesn’t make any sense for her to be so mature.

I also feel that Lady Catherine and Wickham are almost unbelievably bad in MDTC. I know Jane Austen’s characterizations leave a lot of room to play on their worst traits, but I think Ms. Granderson put more than a toe over the line between believable and not.

Of the three books I’ve read in the series so far, I’d rank MDTC number two on my preference scale, behind Charlotte’s book.

Very well written

I enjoyed reading this story because of the addition of new characters and the events were definitely not canon. I'm tired of reading reworked stories that simply repeat the original with minimal changes to make it more interesting.
Georgiana is a very perceptive child and almost immediately recognized that Wickham wasn't a decent person and reported his debauchery to her father who finally took action. Years later she instinctively understands that Mrs Younge is up to something and sets a trap for them with the assistance of Elizabeth and a friends aunt. Lady Catherine had set the plan in place to ruin Georgiana and force Darcy to marry Anne.
Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship isn't as angst filled as canon bc they are surrounded by individuals who keep them from their typical miscommunication.
It's a likable story and even the murder of Mr Collins doesn't detract from your enjoyment bc its inferred and not overly depicted.
Once again this talented writer has given us a nice story to enjoy.

I loved it!

I love the Take Charge books, I enjoy them because I get to see a different aspect of a lesser known character. With that character more the forefront. The book is not to canon although some aspects of the original do appear but in a different context. The villains are still villainous, and some villains get redemption where some get justice served. I couldn’t put this book down, I was drawn in and kept intrigued from start to finished. Secrets, sabotage, friendships & family bonds, justice, murder, sneakiness, and many clever minds; but of all this, passionate romances where there there are plenty of HEA'S for our beloved characters.

Fun but overly padded

Spoilers ahead:

Ms. Granderson is a decent storyteller, but she really needs to learn the truism: less is more. We were given so much information that was useless to the story. So what if there is a clause in the lease agreement that servants needed to be treated well - Caroline never lives at Netherfield. So what if Lady Catherine has a hidden drawer in her study to hide additional funds, no one ever does anything with that knowledge.

Beyond that, the Take Charge series is quite fun and as I’ve read them completely out of order I can say they keep getting better.

Pretty good

Spoilers ahead..... Not enough Darcy and Elizabeth for me... I loved seeing Georgiana be confident and mature but too much was focused on the Burnetts and not enough on the actual romance... Mr Bennet was talking to Darcy before Darcy had had more than 3 conversations with Elizabeth. I really like the Wickham plot and I think the author has a wide grasp of him as a character but was trying to tie too much into the novel with so many extra characters to provide HEAs for

3.5 stars: Not a huge fan of the writing style - too much of it felt like a prologue, where events and information are listed to get me up to speed with the story before the real story begins. Except that this writing style lasted throughout the entirety of the book. That being said, it was still a fun, relaxing read.

Miss Darcy gets credit

A wonderfully entertaining story. Miss Darcy is clever, has confidence, and wonderful friends.
I found this story very entertaining as it does not demean women and the family takes care to listen before they act.

Better than other 5 star books!

The plot lines and development of the story is so much better than many other books I thought were 5 stars! I got a bit confused at some points when like 20 people were talked about in 2 paragraphs, but it was a great read!

Worst of the series

This book isn't terrible but that is pretty much all I can say about it. NONE of the characters are anything near the original and it has very little regency about it.

Georgiana shines

She is wonderful and perfect. I appreciate the the author being positive and encouraging. This is more than an Elizabeth and Darcy story. This author gives consistent positive strong stories that I adore.

Love This Series

Shana Granderson took me on a wonderful journey with Miss Darcy taking charge. This novel allowed all my emotions to be felt which is my gage of good entertainment. Also great handling of some of my least favorite characters of Pride and Prejudice.

Thoroughly enjoying this series, I love the ones where Bingley grows up and stands his ground. I always thought he didn’t deserve Jane. In this one Georgianna is very much in charge and it’s nice to read.

Georgiana almost walks on water

A very, very non-canon Georgiana is very, very mature, bright, and almost prescient. With the help of many non-canon characters, in addition to Lizzy, Darcy, and the usual families, Georgiana almost singlehandedly foils all of Wickham's and Lady Catherine's plots. A little too saccharine for me, but interesting plotting.
