His work is characterised by lucid prose, social criticism, opposition to all totalitarianism (both fascism and stalinism), and support of democratic socialism.
Orwell is best known for his allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), although his works also encompass literary criticism, poetry, fiction and polemical journalism. His non-fiction works, including The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), documenting his experience of working-class life in the industrial north of England, and Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences soldiering for the Republican faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), are as critically respected as his essays on politics, literature, language and culture.

In 2008, The Times named Orwell the second-greatest British writer since 1945.

常聽到《動物農莊》這本書名，今次終於有機會成就解鎖讀完這本書，明白為什麼很多人說這本1945年的作品警世。
作者以《動物農莊》影射當時的蘇聯政府，動物實行革命推翻主人，想過更好更平等的生活，不過慢慢，新領導豬上場，透過篡改事實和歷史，大屠殺，獨裁主義，製造恐懼，最後生活沒有變得更好更平等，領導豬變得越來越像人，階級專制，比原本的生活更被剝削。
喜歡這本書有英文原文和廣東話對照。廣東話翻譯貼地而且地道，一字一句讀出來好像講故事一樣。如果懷疑翻譯是否正確又可以翻查左邊的原文，非常方便。
《動物農莊》的確有警世作用。《七誡》被釋法釋到人面全非; 記憶和事實被扭曲，因為沒有書面記錄而被質疑憑空想像; 製造恐懼，把斯諾寶豬變成長期威脅，鞏固自己，收窄空間，屠殺異見人士。最後動物過的生活雖然不比以前好，卻仍然相信現在的生活一定比有農莊主人的時間好。還擁有舊記憶的人慢慢老去，留下的人已不知道推翻農莊主人革命的初衷。
感謝時代文創用香港人的語言翻譯了這本書。

雖然睇英文版幾次，但呢次最開心，用母語睇，仲學識好多生字。另外，拿破崙同所有豬似足共產黨，不停講大話，而啲動物就係韮菜，精彩精彩。書寫於1940年代，George Owell 真係真知灼見！
