Perhaps Kate Gellar should be called the “slow-burn, high tension” queen of reverse harem romances! MAGIC BOUND, the second addition to her Irish Rogue series continues to heat up with passions without losing the momentum of the paranormal conflict going on.

As Abby struggles to control her powers, she still doesn’t understand how she could have both light and dark magic within her or if she can control which power will win her soul. Meanwhile, there is tension among the four guardians as time is running out to bond with their queen, keep evil at bay and save the castle from financial ruin, because on the earthly plane, money IS an issue. Is this part of why Sam has been so standoffish with Abby or is there more to his behavior?

Abby is haunted by the past, but is it real? As she learns more about her ancestors, her own doubts build, is she really the queen to help save the world or is she a harbinger of evil? Why is she losing track of time? Is someone turning her into a puppet for their own purposes?

Kate Gellar has struck the perfect balance between those sensual and passion-filled moments and a tale of fantasy that shines like the facets in a diamond. Great character development with just enough mystery to keep me turning page after page!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Kate Gellar!

This was a boring book. As the second book of the series it should have answered more questions. The first book was agony and I hoped the series would get better, but alas it did not.

** spoiler alert ** NOTE: THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS

As I mentioned in my first review for Ms Gellar’s Magic Destiny I have to do a full disclosure of a couple things. The first is that I received an ARC from the author so that I could write this review and otherwise have no connection other than being a fan of some of her SciFi work. The second is I typically don’t read modern fantasy/romance which, these days, seems to have replaced the straight romance novel. As I am a fan of her other work, I thought it would be interesting to read her fantasy/romance. So, here goes a brief (not really, inside joke) review of the second book in her Iron Rogue series, Magic Bound.

The story picks up after Abby has revived Brendan, the Guardian with whom she first bonded, after the dark witch, Emma sucked all his power leaving him a dead shell. Emma...hmmmmm… she presents a bit of a problem. I am always a fan of foreshadowing where, when you discover the foreshadowed event, you are actually surprised. Agatha Christie is a great example of a writer that uses foreshadowing in a way that brings on this surprise. Alfred Hitchcock did the same in his films. Unfortunately the foreshadowing of Emma’s future event is a bit of a smack on the head if you don’t immediately see it coming.

There is a second foreshadowing event involving another character. This event is a little more disguised because it does lead you away from what I think is the obvious to the maybe not so obvious.

All of the characters need a bit more variety rather than remaining almost a caricature of what they have been initially set up as. The hints of this variety are beginning to be developed in this second book with Liam and Murphy but Brendan is still the same old injured puppy dog. As for Sam,
his issues are still only hinted at. We know he had to defend the castle from the dark magic under the seal while his parents died but we still don’t know enough about the other queen he tried to bind with that has caused him all this turmoil. Since the series is four books, my humble opinion (ha!) is that this needs to move along a little more quickly.

I was a little confused about the introduction of the other castle and their Guardians. Why were they introduced except to throw another complication into the plot. I’m sure this will be cleared up in the future.

Overall, this second novel moved as I expected it too. Paul and Wendy (especially Wendy who I am guessing is really more involved with the witchery than we are led on to believe) are still a bit of an enigma although Paul’s role becomes a little bit more defined. I do recommend the book for the continuance of the series as I will certainly read the next one as well. I readily admit my lack of experience with fantasy/romance is limited which may color my review since I have no others to compare it to so perhaps I should broaden my horizon.

As always, I admire someone who can produce literature in a final form and pass on that admiration to Ms Gellar. I know she will continue as I know I will continue to read her novels.

Still not there

So the first book was good just lacked a lot of magic and excitement but this one didn’t do it for me. It’s filled with characters asking themselves pointless questions with no excitement until towards the end.

I’m for slow burn but my God this will have your eyes rolling with plenty of frustration. The MC constantly shows lack of confidence which is extremely annoying and the rest are all over the place with their feelings.

I think the author tries to build up suspense and it comes off as uninteresting and boring. Luckily I like to finish what I start and so the story gets better...at the last four short chapters.

I honestly don’t have high hopes for the third book.

This book was even better than the first! The tension between Abby and the Gaurdians is almost unbearable now. I want, so badly, for her to bond with Sam and Murphy and complete the 'ritual' - for lack of better word.
It's a little disappointing how many mistakes I'm picking up on though; it can be a little distracting when sentences don't make sense.
Overall though, this series has got me hooked. I need to know what happens in Drumm Castle and if Abby is the right Queen for the four guys. I'm also invested in Abby’s family history and I'm am so intrigued to find out what her mixed bloodline is.

Abby Brennan is so confused by what she is learning about herself. She has both dark witch and queen tendencies. Liam helps her try to learn more about her ancestry.
Abby and Liam bond, and Abby and Brendan continue their bonding.
Sam is very conflicted because of Abby's dark witch qualities.
Murphy is one of the guardians but reluctant to take his place in the group.
The Trinity have given the guardian 3 weeks to complete the process or they will be replaced and become mortal again.
The story is good enough it kept me up late to finish.

Couldn’t finish it

I think this may be the dumbest heroine ever. Even if a book isn’t the best, I tend to finish it on principle alone, once I’ve become invested, with the characters and my time, I like to see how the arc is resolved and the story ends. I got frustrated with Abbey not learning and doing one asinine thing after the other that I just gave up. She just was too stupid for words and I knew I’d never be able to complete the third book, even if I finished this one.

Like the first book, I read this in one sitting. I loved learning more about the Guardians and why they act like they do. Abby's conflict between her dark and light sides in quite compelling. My only regret is that it ended too soon. Looking forward to the next installment.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.

Loved it!

Loved it! The first book in this series really got me hooked and this second instalment has just added to that. Can’t wait to find out what comes next. Enjoying all the historical references that have been included. They make for a rich story that takes me to another place.

Magic Bound

I didn't like Abby for most of this book. Towards the end she started to be more like her old self. I do have many more questions then answers after reading this book. It will be interesting to see where this leads in the next book.

I really want to know what Abby is. There are still no answers. Hopefully, the 3rd one will answer all the lingering questions. Is Abby a queen? Was her father a guardian? Will she bond with all 4 of the guys? Will Sam and Murphy warm up to her?

Good read

This is the second book in this series, and I didn't like it as much as the first. In this book there was so much annoying inner monologue. It really tuck away from the story for me. I want to find out what happens next, just hope it's a more of a page turner.

OK book

This is an ok book, it doesn't do much for me. It's about white, and dark witchcraft and demons. Also if you want to finish the story you have to get the next book in the series, I don't like that.
