Series: Wicked Earls Club #10 Publication Date: 3/13/18
Goodness, gracious me! This delightful novella makes the heart go pit-a-pat, pit-a-pat – thrum, thrum. I think this might be the sweetest and most romantic book I have read in a long while. Lauren Smith’s writing and turn-of-phrase are delightful, the characters are so well defined that you want to claim them as personal friends and the romance was just sigh worthy. James may be a member of the Wicked Earls Club, but he certainly does not personify its reputation – he is honorable to a fault. The only reason he is a member is so he can retreat into its dark and silent rooms when his responsibilities begin to weigh him down.
We met Gillian Beaumont in several earlier books in the League of Rogues series and I liked her then, but she just shines in this one. She is beautiful, brave, intelligent, level-headed and absolutely devoted to her friend and employer Audrey Sheridan. Gillian is the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Morrey. Her father had loved both her and her mother, but he failed to provide for them in his will. So, when he died, she had to take care of her mother and chose to enter into service as a lady’s maid. She has half-siblings, but she’s never met them and is sure they don’t know of her and wouldn’t want to meet her if they did. She has met the most wonderful man, his kisses thrill her and he makes her dream. She knows that is all it can ever be – but dream she does.
James Fordyce, The Earl of Pembroke is handsome, charming, and has a heart of gold. He adores his ailing mother and does all in his power to care for her. Family means the world to him. He’s met, and kissed the most intriguing lady – and now she has disappeared. He has to find her, but how. While he is puzzling over her, he starts to put some pieces to the puzzle together and realizes she is in danger and he needs to rescue her from the hellfire club known as the Unholy Sinners of Hell.
After the exciting rescue, the book focuses on the romance between the two. He pursues, but she knows they cannot be a couple. When Audrey tricks her into attending a house party that James is attending, they have a wonderful week – and a painful one.
Their HEA is wonderful. Would you like an example of some of the sweet and romantic things James says?
“But beauty is not merely that of one’s face and form. It extends far deeper, into the mind and soul. That beauty grows with time rather than fades.”
“There has only ever been joy for me when I’m with you. When you’re here, it’s like feeling the sun on my face after a cold winter”
See – I told you pit-a-pat, pit-a-pat, thrum, thrum, thrum.
I highly recommend this delightful novella and all of the other books in the League of Rogues series.
"I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
I was delightfully surprised with this novella, because the author managed to pack in quite a lot into an enchanting story line about an Earl who falls in love with a ladies' maid. This novella is one of the better offerings in the "Wicked Earls" series. It's a million times better than Earl of Grayson but not as fabulous as Earl of Westcliff. The H is James, the titular Earl of Pembroke. James is a wonderful beta type of H. He falls into insta-love with the heroine Gillian and then rescues her from being raped by a villainous bunch of rogues who operate an underground Hellfire Club. James is not a rake, even though he's a member of the "Wicked Earls Club". He is devoted to his mother because that lady is suffering from alzheimers disease and spends a lot of time seeing that she is comfortable and cared for.
The heroine Gillian is the illegitimate daughter of the late Earl of Morrey. After her father died, she is forced to become a ladies' maid to Audrey, the sister of Horatia ( the latter is the heroine of His Wicked Seduction ). I didn't like the fact that Gillian kept lying by omission to James, since she was too scared to reveal her identity as a ladies' maid but I did understand her desire to prolong her love affair with the handsome earl. Lady Venetia, a viscount's daughter who is keen to marry James, tries to entice the H with her non existent charms but he only finds her presence irritating and knows that she's just another husband hunter on the Marriage Mart. I enjoyed the dinner table scene where Venetia keeps elbowing James in the ribs in order to distract him from staring at Gillian. I love besotted H's ! It was also wonderful to see a cameo appearance from Godric, the Duke of Essex and the studly H from Wicked Designs, and to discover that H and his duchess Emily are expecting a child. The MC's from His Wicked Seduction are also given cameos in this novella and their son and heir is born in this story ! Lauren Smith really managed to include a lot of stuff in this novella.
James' reaction to learning that Gillian is a maid was perfect. He doesn't berate or scorn her; instead he reaffirms his undying love and is unafraid of what people will say. He also proposes marriage. Gillian is also fortunate to meet her half brother, the current Earl of Morrey, who has been searching for her and offers to provide her with a dowry. I did find the Earl of Morrey rather scrumptious so I hope that the author is planning to write a novel about him some time soon. The epilogue highlights the MC's wedding day celebrations and there is also news that the heroine is pregnant. I hope the remaining 2 novellas in this series are as good as this one and the "Earl of Westcliff". This novella also had a lot more sex scenes than the others I've read so far in the series.
This was a short audiobook I picked up. I say short as in, it played out more like a short vignette rather than a full length story. It wasn't badly written, but it completely lacked substance. In other words it was more like a tawdry story in Regency times with a quite predictable HEA. That being said... at least I wasn't bored. 😉
Earl of Pembroke by Lauren Smith is book 7 in The League of Rogues series and book 10 in The Wicked Earls' Club series. This is the story of James Fordyce, The Earl of Pembroke and Gillian Beaumont. This can be a standalone book if you wish to do so. Gillian is rescued from the club of hell and awakens something in James. But Gillian is a illegitimate daughter of an earl who has to earn a living. But their attraction is something that is bringing them together at each of their meeting. Enjoyed their story very much.
It was okay. It was short, so some things were rushed and resolved quickly. I wished for more conflict other than the heroine's secret identity. The hero was a sweet, honorable guy. He's not a rake and comes with no baggage. He actually wants to court and marry the heroine. Hooray!
The book does not stand alone. It would be best if you read Her Wicked Longing, where the H/h first meet. If both books are novellas, then why couldn't the author had combined the two novellas into one?
4.8⭐ James y Gillian 💜🔥 Amoooooooo el misterio con el que comienza su relación ya que el no sabe quien es ella y la forma en que abren sus corazones entre ellos los amo. 🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵🏵 ~Si me atreviera a soñar, tú serías mío.

Utterly romantic! I have been waiting for Gillian’s story and it was so worth the wait. Her and James are just wonderful together. Lauren Smith does not disappoint.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 Total perfection as always from Lauren. As well as being part of The Wicked Earls series this is the 7th book in the League Of Rogues . Lauren has a great gift that makes it a pleasure to read her books . Don’t miss this one it’s a gem . “I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
There's something to be said about a nice romance story that leaves you with a smile on your face by the end.
The "Earl of Pembroke" book #7 in the "League of Rogues" series or book #10 in the "Wicked Earls' Club" is just the sort of story you can easily get lost into. It was easy reading without a bunch of unnecessary drama. I don't know...It was just refreshing!
This novella focuses on the romance between Gillian Beaumont, lady's maid to Audrey Sheridan and James Fordyce, the Earl of Pembroke. We really got to know much more about Gillian in "Her Wicked Longing" and how an innocent errand and a mistaken identity led her to catch the eye of one of the most sought after bachelors in the ton.
The illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Morrey, Gillian has accepted her lot in life, one of being a servant and nothing more. She hadn't allowed herself to dwell or long for the life she could've had as a proper lady, an earl's daughter, had her father married her mother. She'd been able to manage that loss that is, until circumstances lead her to cross paths with James.
He was exactly the sort of man she had dreamed of falling in love with. But she never could. He was a titled peer, a member of the haute ton. She was an earl's bastard daughter.
If I dared to dream, you would be mine ~ Gillian
James triggers every desire that Gillian has worked hard to quell. And it's so heartbreaking and equally exhilirating!
She longed for one moment to pretend that this life might have been hers. Part of her heart still clung to the foolish girlhood dreams, wanted to believe for one night that she was a highborn lady who could be seen with him, who could marry him, who could have a life with him.
Gillian's open heart, her intelligence and compassion just draws you to love her. Her fear of losing the love she knows that could never be hers pains you and you want her to get that happy ending because she truly deserves it! She's not in pursuit of a title or money or the privileges that come along with being a lady but only wants to love James with everything she has to offer.
James Fordyce is one of the sweetest men to cross the pages of this series. He isn't by any means the arrogant rogue or wicked earl like many of his peers who relish and live by the label they wear like a badge of honor. And that's what makes James so swoon worthy ❤
True, he belonged to the Wicked Earl's Club, but unlike the other members, he could not lose himself in gambling, wine or women. He merely wished to vanish into the darkness of the exclusive club. It was the only way he could escape his burdens, and he despised that he needed that escape.
James is selfless, kind and really has a heart of gold. His life is wrapped up in taking care of his ailing mother who suffers from dementia and thus he's neglected to live a life of his own. Until he meets Gillian.
She had awakened his sleepy heart, like a bolt of errant lightning. She'd resurrected him, reminding him of all that he could have.
This was really a lovely story of two opposite worlds coming together and the power that love has to overcome the most difficult of circumstances.
"I believe there are certain people in life who are worth the heartache and the difficult times. For me, Gillian is that woman. I truly believe she is worth anything." ~ James
Where I thought this book was lacking was that it could've done more to weave that "common thread" we've been getting through the previous 6 books with Waverly and Langley. This story starts off with a bang and then shifts abruptly to focus solely on the romance. And aside from Audrey's thirst for espionage and her moonlighting as Lady Society, I was left wondering if this book was really necessary. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story but I wished we would've had more of a connection to the series as a whole.
That being said, I still look forward to the next book which is the story of Audrey and Jonathan!
I love the themes and conflicts of people marrying someone different than them. Whether it be class, race, beliefs. I love seeing what can happen when these two people meet and fall in love. And the struggles they face just seem to make their happily ever after all the more sweet. James and Gillian’s story was one journey I was thrilled to tag along on. I was already chomping at the bit for more after reading Lauren Smith’s Her Wicked Longing. Audrey Sheridan had a real talent for mischief and sweet, smart Gillian Beaumont was always by her side trying to keep her from trouble. When Gillian accidentally falls into her own bit of mischief by being mistaken for a lady rather than a servant, I knew this would be an adventure I didn’t want to miss. Gillian caught the eye of the handsome James Fordyce, Earl of Pembroke. After a few stolen kisses in a bookshop and rescuing Gillian from a hellfire club, James knew he wanted more. But Gillian has secrets. James thinks she is a lady. He doesn’t know she’s merely lady’s maid to Audrey Sheridan. Still, it would be nice to pretend for just a little while that she was a highborn lady and could have a life with someone like James. And as each encounter became more heated, the desire to experience life outweighed the knowledge that it could soon come crashing down around her. What follows is an enchanting romance with characters who are funny, sweet, and sexy. James isn’t as rakish as the league of rogues but that doesn’t detract from his appeal. To me, he was even more romantic and swoon worthy. He was responsible and kind and had sacrificed much for his family. His responsibilities at home had left him lonely and shut off from the world. With Gillian, he could forget his worries. He could breathe again. Gillian had been responsible and sensible her whole life. As the illegitimate daughter of an earl, she’d had to go into service. She’d accepted her station but deep down she dreamed of a life filled with love and a husband who would give her his heart. She could dream of such a life with James. But it was just a dream. A life with James would be impossible. Too many reputations could be ruined. She should forget him and move on. But thanks to James’ persistence and Audrey’s scheming, Gillian may just get the life she’s dreamed of and so much more. Though a novella, what this story lacks in length it makes up for in substance. I’ve adored all the characters in the League of Rogues series and it was such fun to reunite with many of them again. Audrey has long been a favorite of mine. Her ability to attract trouble is so much fun. I’m still chuckling thinking about her clutching that black cat and wielding a poker. I loved the little tidbits of Jonathan’s pursuit of her and I can’t wait for more of them. I also loved the characters of Letty and Adam. I am extremely anxious for their story as well. If you’re a fan of historical romance, you’ll fall head over heels for Lauren Smith’s books. Her stories are brilliant and her characters are bold, strong, and so endearing. As with all her books, this one will steal your heart.
One of the MAD ABOUT SERIES books 2023 on HRBC. H & h are James Fordyce Earl of Pembroke a crossover book in two series. The League of Rogues and the Wicked Earls Club. The h is Gillian Beaumont the illigitimate daughter of the Earl of Morrey. It is a story about Love at First Sight and about a titled person marrying a commoner. There is some danger and mystery because of Audrey (Lady Society) needing rescuing. Gillian Audrey's lady's maid and friend (her sidekick) and Jonathan went to the Hell's Night Club to help Audrey out of the latest debaucle and James went to help Gillian. Gillian likes living the Fairy Tale having love for just a little while until reality takes over and she can't see James every again. It's a love conquers all type of story.
I can't stress out you have to read the novella, Her Wicked Longing, otherwise it'll feel like you were just dropped into this book going at 60MPH or more with no road signs leaving you completely unaware of where you're going. Seriously this book would have made a lot more sense had those pages from that other novella been included or maybe event a note at the beginning would have been great too because this one is not a stand alone novella.
It's a sweet book about two people who thinking there was no one out there for them, realizing that not only were they wrong but it's who you are that truly matters when it comes down to it. Titles and society be damned. I might read another of the author's work down to road as I saw another handsome man on a cover of her books, and while I should not judge a book by it's cover, again it's the first thing you see!
Big Sigh as I turned the last page. A wonderfully crafted story that will make your heart smile. Gillian Beaumont, is a lady's maid to her friend and employer Audrey Sheridan. She was born the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Morrey and had little options to support herself when he and her mother passed away. She is very intelligent, beautiful and knows her station in life or what it has to be. But as fate would have it, she meets the very handsome, goodhearted Earl of Pembroke, James Fordyce. James does not realize who she is and only knows her name. Sparks fly and their meeting is magical but she disappears and James is determined to find her. James a member of the Wicked Earls' Club, is really part of the club just to get away from his sadness due to the illness of his mother. What follows as James searches for Gillian is an intriguing next meeting and several twist and turns until they are back together. This story is so very romantic and emotional that you will be sighing as I said at the beginning until the last page. You can never go wrong with a story by Lauren Smith and this one is no exception!!

This book was a sweet tale of two people who recognize immediately their other half. So it is how they reach another and deal with each other past and secrets. There was no drama nor angst, only acceptance and with time truth. James Fordyce is not the usual regency hero, all alpha, drinking, gambling and whoring. He only manages his estate and takes care of his kin, until Gillian awakened desire for more. Gillian Beaumont feels she does not deserve happiness because of her lineage and that she is working in service, but she is impossibly drawn to the Earl Of Pembroke and she is not enough strong to turn her back to him. It is a cute story of how with some friends help they will find their way together.
I totally enjoyed this one, meeting, as always, my expectations of the League of Rogues world that Lauren Smith has created. James is part of the Wicked Earls’ Club, but we know him best from the Rogues series. This hero and heroine are so likable and compliment each other well. Beautiful individuals, each of them. Such tenderness and emotion throughout. Can’t wait to read Jonathan and Audrey’s story, soon to be released!
I found this a good book. Th Earl of Pembroke is a strong character rescuing Gillian from the Wicked Earls club. They get very close but a secret from Gillian's past threatens their future together.
This featured insta-lust (H+h) & insta-love (h) & 2 tiny women referred to as "petite Amazons;" an oxymoron. After they professed mutual love, every- thing fell too neatly into place.
The Earl of Pembroke is the story of the forbidden romance between James Fordyce and Lady’s Maid, Gillian Beaumont. Despite an excellent education and happy childhood in London, as the illegitimate daughter of an Earl, Gillian understands that her life can never be the same as her young mistress, Audrey Sheridan. When Audrey gets Gillian mixed up in a plot to take down a debauched London club, she is rescued by handsome James. This was a super sweet story, with a secret identity trope and a main character who truly deserves happiness. I love Gillian‘s loyalty, and her bravery. The Earls charm and kindness were the perfect match for her. There were also some happy moments and progressions for previous characters and that made me so pleased.

The League of Rogues series deep dives into some very dark themes that some readers may find disturbing pe difficult. Please see CW for this title. If you are looking for or are a fan of light-hearted, magic-feeling historical romances, this is, most likely, not the series for you. However, if you enjoy complex plotlines, danger, and darker themes along with steamy romance, read on. . Honestly, this was probably the least dark of the LoR series books so far. Overall, it was pretty lighthearted in comparison. This book had great pacing and made for easy reading. Additionally, it picks up right where the "teaser" novella left off (book 6.) While there was serious potential for some twisted stuff to happen, it all fell through relatively quickly.
As per usual, more and more characters are being added to each book. I will admit that it is a bit tricky to keep them all straight! I wish there was a list of all the characters in the LoR series with little blurbs about them. While you don't truly need to remember everyone to enjoy this book, I do find it challenging to remember what book each character came from, if they already have a book, or if it is a future book. This storyline introduced us to some characters I am willing to bet will be mains in books within this series.
While I enjoyed this book overall, I felt I was missing chemistry between MCs. Their story was so uncomplicated, which isn't always a bad thing, but I would have liked just a bit more challenges for the mains to push them deeper into love. The romance was fine, but I wanted more from them. There was great potential for some serious pining that just didn't happen. While I felt that James and Gillian did truly like each other, the reality feelings of love just were not there for me. . Random Thoughts While Reading:
These dudes are real weird.

Miss Gillian Beaumont and James Fordyce, Earl of Pembroke, had shared a kiss in a bookshop, which happened quite accidentally when Gillian was helping her employer and friend Audrey Sheridan. How Gillian wishes things were otherwise; she likes James a little too much, he’s an earl, and she’s an earl’s illegitimate daughter and a lady’s maid; she is nothing. Audrey writes a social column anonymously as Lady Society, and once again she drags Gillian along in a crazy scheme, which lands them in trouble. Fortunately, they found knights in shining armour; Gillian’s is James!
THE EARL OF PEMBROKE is part of The Wicked Earls' Club, but stands perfectly on its own, even though we realise that some characters’ stories happened in the previous instalments. THE EARL OF PEMBROKE is a little piece of fluff, which just what I needed. There is quite a bit of action at the beginning, it’s rather fast-paced; then there’s the most charming romance, which is sweet and a little spicy. I felt the story got better and better as it went along, and I was so happy that there were no complications due to misunderstandings, besides Gillian’s secret; nothing really nasty happened. I loved Gillian and James; oh, he was so lovely! I thought they fell in bed pretty quickly, but it was alright considering the circumstances, and they really liked each other; it was all very honest and sweet. I loved Audrey: what a character! She’s reckless and adventurous, and I cannot wait for her to get together with Jonathan St. Laurent, which will obviously happen, with their chemistry crackling all over the place!
THE EARL OF PEMBROKE is lovely, charming, sweet, and a little bit sexy; a quick and very pleasant read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I give 4 ½ stars
Earl of Pembroke, listed as Book 10, but should probably be Book 11 after the book Earl of Benton (and Book 7 of the League of Rogues series), was about James Fordyce, the Earl of Pembroke, and Gillian Beaumont, the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Morrey, and lady's maid to Lady Audrey Sheridan. The way the book started was a bit confusing. It was like coming into a movie theater 20 minutes late and having missed the whole point of the show. The story seemed to start several chapters into the book instead of beginning with Chapter 1. Grace was thinking of prior meetings with Pembroke, but the story so far had not brought him into the plot. I believe the reason is that, as already mentioned, this book, while part of the Wicked Earls' Club series, is also part of the League of Rogues series, thus there is more to this story in the other books. After James rescued Gillian from a dangerous situation, things heated up between them before she disappeared again. Lady Audrey intervened and told James about the house party she was to attend, thereby setting Gillian up to spend time with him. Although Gillian soon realized what Audrey had done, James was still unaware that Gillian was a maid to the other woman and requested to be allowed to court her. Unbeknown to the two of them, someone saw them kissing and set out to put a stop to their relationship. This book had a wide range of emotions, including a touch of angst, sadness, grief, joy, love, envy, and a smidge of humor. There was chemistry, romance, intrigue, and passion. All these kept the book interesting and alive, which helped earn its place with the other Keeper for the Shelves books.
Gillian Beaumont is a lady’s maid and on an errand for her mistress to the modiste’s shop is where she meets James Fordyce, Earl of Pembroke. Gillian is trying on dresses and needs help and James comes to her rescue. James is at the shop with his sister Letty, he hears someone call out for help and finds Gillian. After helping Gillian, he introduces her to his sister and they proceed to have an outing together. Later that night Gillian is at the Hellfire Club looking for her mistress who was lured there for a story. Gillian and her mistress is taken against their will and will be deflowered. James finds out and saves her. He takes her to his house because Gillian is hurt. Gillian disappears and James is on a mission to find her. He starts his search at Audrey Sheridan’s house to find answers. Audrey invites him to her sister’s house party where she promises Gillian will be there. Gillian is now caught up in another or Audrey’s schemes where she is to pretend to be a lady for the duration of the house party. James and Gillian meet again and realize that they have many things in common. The more time they spend together they develop feelings for each other. When James’ mother dies, Letty threatens Gillian to tell James the truth or she will. James and Gillian are so compassionate together and don’t care about scandal or anything that will stop their love from blooming. They will whether anything as long as they are together. I enjoy all of Laure Smith’s stories, she is an excellent writer.
This is the second book I have read in the Wicked Earls' club series. This isn't a series in the usual sense, as each book is by a different author and about different characters. This means that you can, of course, read each one as a stand-alone novel.
In Lauren Smith's book, we meet the Earl of Pembroke. If you have read some of Smith's other books, then you may well have come across him before. He has had small bit roles in the League of Rogues series and he is also the great-not sure how far back- grandfather of the Earl of Pembroke in Her British Stepbrother trilogy: Seduction. I have to admit I quite like the way that many of her books have subtle little links in them. If you are a League fan, then the Earl of Pembroke has more than subtle little links, with many of the characters appearing here too.
The romance itself centres around Gillian Beaumont, ladies maid to Audrey Sheridan. Poor Gillian seems to spend much of her time trying to either rescue her mistress or getting into trouble because of her. Once Audrey realises that Gillian has feelings for James (the Earl) then she starts to try and bring them together.
Audrey is always tremendous fun in stories and she brings a sparkle to this story too. (I am looking forward to reading her own story when it comes out though.) I enjoyed the love story element and overall it was a good read.
Gillian Beaumont never had a fairytale life: she was left penniless after her father the Earl of Morrey’s death, forcing her into service as a lady’s maid. Luckily, her mistress Audrey is more adventurous than most ladies and soon Gillian is aiding her espionage. One such spy mission forces Gillian to masquerade as a high-born lady to infiltrate a Hellfire Club. But when she falls into the club’s trap, she’s rescued by gentleman rogue, the Earl of Pembroke. James Fordyce, Earl of Pembroke, tries to be a well-behaved man. A member of the Wicked Earls’ Club, he has his fair share of notoriety, but he’s longing for the day when he might settle down. A chance encounter with a mysterious beauty in a modistes leaves him feeling full of hope. When she vanishes without a trace and danger seems to be following her, he knows he must find her. Another engrossing long novella from one of my must read authors which lived up to her high standard. I couldn’t put it down & read it in one sitting. The characters as always are so strong. This story as well as being a Wicked Earls book is part of the League of Rogues series & both series are so very very good, I loved the cross over. Gillian has featured in earlier Rogues books & I’d been impatiently waiting for her story & now I can’t wait for Audrey’s story & I hope Letty & Pauls’ stories. I could wax lyrical about the book but just read it to appreciate it
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
James, the Earl of Pembroke, falls for a mysterious lady and rescues her from a hell fire club...
Gillian, the illegitimate daughter of an earl, is hiding her true identity as a servant from James...
When thrown together at a house party, their passion can't be denied, but will the truth of Gillian's past destroy their happiness?
My Thoughts:
This is the second book I have read in this Multi-Author series. I love Lauren Smith's books, especially the Historical Romance and Dragon Shifter Romance. This book is part of The Wicked earl's Club and crosses over to be part of Lauren's series The League of Rogues. James is an Earl and when he and his sister meet Gillian in a book shop he is immediately drawn to this lovely young woman. Although Gillian is a daughter of an Earl she is illegitimate. Her mother was the Earl's mistress after the death of his wife. Sparks fly between this unlikely Hero and Heroine, but will their obvious attraction lead to marriage? In the Regency Era that probably wouldn't happen, but this is fiction so maybe it can. I gave this novella 4.75 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5.0 flames. Although our hero treats Gillian like a lady passion finally wins out. I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Our heroine Gillian Beaumont is the illegitimate daughter of the late Earl of Morrey feels her after father died he didn’t make provisions for her or her mother. After her mother dies she takes a position as a lady’s maid to earn a living. When she’s is trying on her employer's dresses she encounters James, the Earl of Pembroke & his sister, she’s mistaken for nobility. James is quite fascinated with Gillian and continues to peruse her and Gillian ia herself quite fascinated with the Earl of Pembroke even though she knows nothing can come of the acquaintance. After all she’s an illegitimate daughter and he’s an Earl and part of England’s upper crust of nobility. As James peruse her she has a hard time telling him no, their chemistry together is instant and fulfilling for both of them. James is unlike anyone she has ever known, he’s a caring and loving son who keeps his ill Mother close by during her illness. James continues to tell Gillian there’s nothing she can tell him to dissuade him from their relationship. Will Gillian take the risk of being honest with him and risk his rejection? Will James stay true to his word and love Gillian no matter her circumstances and background? You’ll love this short novella filled with a love to last the ages and two people who long for someone to love for a lifetime. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
I received an ARC of this book; it was my first in this series. All of the main characters were surprisingly likeable - and non-judgmental. They were not the typical historical romance characters, each of these having a tendency towards rebellion against the status quo. None seem to be terribly bothered by social strictures, except for Gillian who is extremely conscious of her lower status. Ironically, her character is the type who might often be presented as a social-climber, but she is more concerned with what others will think than anyone else in the book.
James, the Earl of Pembroke, thinks very little of the women to whom he has been exposed and he longs for true love. He is willing to spend his life alone, and knows that if he finds this special woman, he won't care who she is. Unfortunately, no one will tell him much about Gillian because they want her to have a chance with him.
What I liked about this book was the lack of contrived conflict. Gillian agonizes over who she is, afraid to tell James, and his response is, “Ok, and….” Based on Gillian’s background, it's understandable that she might fear his response, but there's never any doubt on the part of the reader. James has already demonstrated his character; he is considerate, open, sensitive, and doesn't care about the haute ton.
