In a land built upon lies and deception, uncovering the truth can be deadly.

Therese Westa is sick of death, but taking lives is what provides for her younger sisters. When a client approaches her with an unusual request, Therese takes the job offer, which includes the condition of “no questions asked”. As Therese uncovers the reason for the request, she is faced with a choice: kill an innocent man or save her sisters.

Therese’s hesitation to carry out the assassination thrusts her into the aftermath of a dangerous chain of events. Caught between security and truth, Therese must choose where her loyalties lie, for the answer will determine who survives.

5/23 -- I loved rereading this!

--------------------------------

The Original Review

Characters: This novel follows four main characters: Holder, Rogan, Therese, and Ivelle. All of them were well developed, but I believe Holder and Ivelle were my favorites. Holder ... because he just seemed like this average guy who was trying to figure things out. Ivelle ... because of her sense of humor.

Language: Clean.

Moral: This novel contained themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and truth. I enjoyed the allegorical aspects and am excited to see how the characters continue to grow in their faith in the next books.

Plot: The plot was a little confusing to me for a while, but things started to come together at the end. And that ending ... I'll just say I need the second book sooner rather than later :) Because that wasn't a nice spot to leave me in!

Romance: Clean. Just a few hints of romance that I'm guessing will develop into more in later books :)

Writing: Madisyn Carlin's writing worked great for this book. I was able to picture what was going on, and I'm looking forward to reading more by her in the future.

Overall: Deceived was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction, fantasy, and allegories.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. Whew! What a debut! I don’t know what I was expecting exactly—if I was expecting anything—but it definitely wasn’t this ride.

The worldbuilding was fantastic. As someone who has created my own imaginary world and knows how hard it is, I deeply appreciate Madisyn Carlin’s work. She really created a whole world, with its politics, religion, special days, sayings, history, ideas… It’s really amazing. I also enjoyed the writing style, with its constant humour, the similes and descriptions, and the way it created a medieval-feeling world with modern overtones.

This story appears to be an allegory of the kingdom of Satan vs. the kingdom of God. I cannot say much because of spoilers, it was interesting to see the fall of Lucifer and the death of Christ from the angels’ point of view. There were some aspects that would have bothered me if this wasn’t an allegory but since it WAS an allegory, I didn’t enquire too deeply into the theology as far as it was concerned.

The characters were really the best part of the book. First, the MCs. Holder—I loved Holder! He was so sweet and boyish and searching, and such a great bodyguard for the princess—and she was so cute, especially with him. ;) Rogan was epic. So harsh and fierce, but with such a tender, hurting heart… he and Holder were the perfect pair. And am I shipping him to Ivelle? Well… just a little. She’s so strong yet so kind… and Rogan would have his hands full keeping her safe from her impulsivity, haha. And finally, Therese hurt my heart—such a lost soul as she was, trying so hard to cling to what goodness she could. And then there were the side characters. Sharp Claudine & gruff Borros, both so loving. Jolie and Lucian, somehow adorably in love and good friends to Therese. The terrifying, confusing King, the cruel nurse, the wicked first lieutenant. Big, warm-hearted Angus. They were all so alive, and I loved them… or hated them… so much.

The plot was epic. I was confused and yet hooked, unable to put the book down except for a couple breaks because of my anxiety. I was fascinated by the theme of loyalty that hit each MC differently and bound them together. The book ends on a HORRIBLE cliffhanger, which I am not accustomed to, so I felt rather jarred by the lack of resolution, but I am so eagerly awaiting the next book! I loved the allegory about seeking light and truth in the darkness and lies, and I am excited to see where this leads the MCs in their different quests!

Content: A lot of violence & killing, but not too graphic. Therese and her friends are assassins and regularly murder people; Therese knows it’s wrong but her only other option is to be a prostitute. A man claims he is a descendant of the immortals and the king is also claimed to be an immortal, but due to the allegory, it didn’t bother me too much. Mild euphemisms (d*rn).

A Favourite Quote: “Golden light pierces the darkness, pushing it away and bringing forth a new day. My brothers and I stand on Uri’s highest mountaintop, watching the land slowly awaken. I still cannot believe the glory and power and victory over evil. Only He could do that. Mihai said it reminded him that just because we are Assistants, doesn’t mean we known everything. We certainly did not foresee the incredible display of power witnessed forty days ago. People were always sinful, and mercy and grace were granted through their sacrifices—the sign they truly repented. Now, an equal mix of love and justice combined so all may be saved through One’s sacrifice. Sheer glory and awe and majesty fill the kingdom. Behind us lays a land darkened by evil. Eligor and his followers, the Nolemti, have tainted good with their pure hatred. A darkness not visible to human eye cloaks the land, though our sight pierces the deception weaved into layers of lies. What will become of it? What will become of those whose minds were warped? Whose hearts were darkened? We asked the King, and he answered with mention of a plan. Whatever it is, His glory can dissipate the darkness, though the darkness will put up a fight.”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: Now life felt as jumbled as a skein of yarn left in the hands of children and kittens.
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “I’ll probably die doing this, and I don’t even have a partial epitaph in mind.”
Holder rolled his eyes. “If you die, I’ll ensure your epitaph waxes poetic about your unflinching valor and courage while facing down a horse.”

This is my new favorite book!

I can't stand boring, chatty books with no real moral or action. I beta read this for Miss Carlin and wow! If you like humor, she's got it. If you like allegorical tales, this is it. If you like no-nonsense soldiers, he's in there. If you like to walk with characters through their struggle for survival in an ever darkening world, you'll have the read of your life time.

While multiple point of view books are hard for me to keep straight, this one proved easy to follow and understand. The main characters were all relatable and interesting even though there were four of them.

My personal favorite is Holder. His gentle but protective personality makes me want to crack the king over the head for anything he puts this poor boy through.

Second favorite is Rogan for his strong spirit and unfailing friendship, even when this one spoiler happens and hard decisions arise.

Ivelle is my third favorite. If she could handle a sword like Rogan, she might be in a tie with the soldier. MIGHT. I love her snarkiness and curiosity. Yes, I have shipped her. If you read this book, you can guess with who. *Wink*

The last but not least of the main characters in my view is Therese. Her devotion to her younger sisters is heartwarming. And I've always had a warm spot for assassins, but she doesn't have the snark that Ivelle possesses or the heart like Holder. For her profession, she must be unemotional. While her character is built brilliantly and I totally agree with her split second decisions about killing a certain man, she doesn't draw me in like Holder. Personal preference only.

All I can say is that I can't wait for the next book! Miss Carlin left such a cliffhanger! It makes me want to look her in the eye and say "you wouldn't dare". But she just might. That's her writing, you'll never know what's going to happen next. I'm still sitting firmly on my five stars because this is now my favorite book. How can you ignore that handsome bodyguard who would give anything to protect his little charge? *Puppy eyes.* He'd be such a good big brother.

What? WHAT!? No!!!!! It can't end like this.....what!? I need more! Ack man, Carlin is ripping my heart out with this ending....literal tear just leaked out! Oh my goodness that book was a Rollercoaster ride....soooooooo good! I don't have words to express how much I loved it and how much I am hurting over that cliffhanger ending!

Okay, quick content guide
Language: clean, a few made up things like By the stars, what in Orm...but that's all.

Romance: nada

Violence: nothing too gory in my opinion. There were fight scenes, ambushes, sneak attacks...awesomeness! And it was all clean.

Magic: nada...which was really nice.

Man, Holder and Rogan were great! Their my favs, sorry Therese and Ivelle but the guys win....wow! This story is masterfully crafted! There was so much world building but not in a boeing way..and the characters were developed so well! And then the action and conflict both physical and internal were amazing! I am so looking forward to reading the next book! Actually, I need it right now...but, since this one just released I guess I will have to impatiently wait for the next...

Good gravy that was a fantastic read! Literally on the edge of my seat the whole time and I could rave about how awesome this was for like EVER!!!! But I'll let everyone get on with their day....but, just saying that was amazing! Carlin has got skill!!!

Wow, what a great debut novel! I've been excited to read this book ever since I first heard about it, and I now I'm excited to read the next one.

Characters: Four POVs were evenly addressed throughout the story: Holder's, Rogan's, Ivelle's, and Therese's. Overall, I thought each of them were really well done - it's not easy to have four solid main characters and have them come off as distinct individuals. Holder was probably my favorite, given he was just such a gentle, thoughtful guy. And he definitely needs someone to be his bodyguard, not to be someone's bodyguard. Just saying. But Rogan was also really intriguing ... I love his struggles and questioned loyalties. And he's just so sad, too. I need some resolution in that storyline. But Rogan and Holder's friendship? I adored it. They were such good honorary brothers to each other, and I just love watching that. And Ivelle's loyalty to Borros and Claudine was so sweet, and her interactions and care for little Emmi was precious! But Therese ... poor Therese. She was so desperate to someone save her little sisters, but she suffered so much. Again, more hard decisions. That's kind of a theme in this book, come to think of it. But a great cast of characters - and the villains. Yuck. They're all nasty individuals.

Plot/Setting/Writing Style: Being a fantasy book (or I guess maybe it's more allegorical than fantasy?), the world-building wasn't so confusing that I didn't understand what was going on, but it was well done. Different than our world, but not so foreign that I was overwhelmed with a ton of differences. The writing style was really nice - very clean but also offering rich prose. And for the plot, I have to say I was a little perplexed at first. Mostly because there were so many POVs that weren't really connected at first, but when things started to connect more, the plot began making a lot more sense. This is one of those stories that you just have to keep reading for a bit, then when everything settles, everything starts coming together and it's very cool. And beyond that, there was a nice mixture of inward wrestlings and outward distresses, providing a pretty quick-moving plot.

Romance: Just putting this one here really short, because I honestly have no idea who should get with whom. But needless to say, this book was very clean - I think some hand-holding or something was the extent of it. Maybe a kiss, but I can't remember. And I'll just keep puzzling out who should get with whom.

Moral/Theme: The allegory woven throughout this story was nicely done - I think allegories can be harder to pull off in general. I might've not agreed with everything in how it was presented (again, the difficulties of allegories, and I haven't thought super deeply about allegories), but it was so lovely to see the characters begin to see the Truth. I'm excited to see how their arcs will continue in the next book. It was also scary to see how the truth was basically outlawed - definitely not too far from the world we live in.

Overall, this was a wonderful debut novel, and I am so excited to see more of this author's work. And after the ending of this book ... yeah, I need the next book in a hurry!

Oh. My goodness.
Madisyn, you're now like my favoritest author. Wowzers.
When Therese went through the turmoil of not wanting to do something bad but also wanting to do that something for someone (this is hard! goodness!) I felt like I was the one making those choices. That's one of the reasons Madi is such a great writer. She makes the characters so real. *sighs happily*
Now onto official business. 5 stars, or 4.8 since there's no perfect book in the world. But we'll round to 5.

Musha Musha Musha: no mushy stuff! Pretty positive it was romance free, unless I'm forgetting something. My brain is like a lumber room: Things wanted, always buried. (LotR fans? eh? eh?)

Ye Olde Magicks: No, this is a nonmagical fantasy (I'm pretty sure. See above statement XD).

Blood Blood Blood and Death: *sniffles* Poor certain-injured-characters-whose-names-I-can't-say-for-spoiler-reasons. Yes, yes. Many injuries, much drama. Poisoning, arrows in flesh, etc. OH, OH THOSE POOR CHARACTERS! *chokes* *regains composure* Flashbacks to horrific happenings years before, and so on. Basically what I'm trying to say is if you're very sensitive to descriptions of injuries or mass destruction/killings... (I won't spoil it!) *eyelid twitches* (I won't!!!) You may want to think this through before reading it.

Folk of Fame: Every. Single. Character. I love them all. Except for the bad guys, of course. Ivelle is probably my favorite by 1%, I love them all equally! Holder was awesome too, and he takes second by 0.5%. There's also Therese and Rogan, who tie for third. Oh, and Redwing the horse is great too. Love the... relationship he has with Rogan. *cackles*

Mouth-washable Words: Clean. Just "by the stars" which I assume the author made up especially for this book since I've never heard it before.

This book was great great GREAT! I would so recommend it to fantasy lovers! I'm dying for book 2 now!

Synopsis: When Therese Westa is tasked with killing Holder Lygor, one of King Eligor’s bodyguards, she expects the job to be quick and easy. However, as her mission is drawn out into many complicated steps and she learns more about her target, she begins to see that she’s falling headfirst into a plot that reeks of betrayal, deceit, and treachery.

Y’all. I quite honestly don’t know what to think about Deceived. I typically have a few days—or a week or two—to mull over books before I read them...but my review is due tomorrow and I just finished reading this a few hours ago. So suffice to say, I’m kinda winging this thing. Maybe I’ll figure out what my thoughts are as I write! *winks*

To be honest, getting into Deceived was a struggle! The plot was very confusing and hard to follow, and the focus kept shifting between our four main characters—Therese, Ivelle, Holder, and Rogan—and a very fast pace. I don’t have a problem following multiple points-of-view; however, when I can’t decide who’s the main character and I don’t have a clue of what’s going on, that makes it pretty difficult.

Things definitely cleared up toward the end—and Y’ALL. THAT CLIFFHANGER. I NEED BOOK TWO SO BAD.

*clears throat * But up until that point, the plot was all over the place (and a lot of things weren’t explained, at least not very well) and the story kinda dragged. I felt like there was a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth that detracted from the story.

Speaking of the story, we had an amazing concept and premise here. Now, some aspects (like the pacing) weren’t executed quite as well as I had hoped...but others were spot-on! (I’ll get to the good stuff in a minute, don’t worry!) Had we had some balance, I think the story would have been so epic!

The allegory...now that was interesting! The first third of the story was so subtle that I couldn’t be sure if there even was an allegory (even though I knew there was), but the rest of the story laid it on thick. I personally prefer more symbolism than full-out retellings, but to each his own! At least it fit the story and tinged the whole plot with intrigue and drama, which I loved!

My final qualm...the writing. Carlin’s writing wasn’t bad at all...but it wasn’t very balanced or immersive. One moment, she’s got this lovely description; the next moment, she’s breezing through things and I don’t even notice that we’ve went from one place to another! I think with a quick line edit, we could’ve whipped her prose into shape and then it would’ve been as good as...you guessed it!

THE CHARACTERS.

I don’t know how, but the characterization and arc development in Deceived was. so. good! Therese, who I’d assumed was the protagonist, was kinda pushed to the side, which—to be honest—was fine by me, because Holder, Rogan, and Ivelle were PERFECTION. I adored Ivelle and her snarky attitude (I...never love snarky attitudes...so that’s saying a LOT). Rogan was just augh. Amazing. I loved him. Holder was so sweet and, really, he made the perfect protagonist! (Sorry, Therese!)

The secondary characters like Anastasia, Claudine and Borros, Svetlana (*gags*), and the others were all so vivid and intriguing! (And, in some cases, downright detestable and nauseating.)

Seriously, the characters were simply the best part! (I feel like I’ve been saying that about a lot of novels lately…)

Y’all know how most people say that sequels aren’t as good as the first book? I’m inclined to disagree. I’ve seen many times—and I think this is one of them—where the first book is good...it introduces great characters and establishes an interesting story...but it’s confusing. Or slow. Or too quick. Or something.

But then the sequel comes along, and it whips the plot into shape. It ties up the loose ends. It completes the character arcs. It wraps everything up in a neat little bow, throwing in everything you’d hoped for for the story, and in the end? The sequel is better.

I think such is the case with Deceived, which is why I MUST have Betrayed immediately! I can just see everything unfolding...*gaze fades off into the abyss*

Long story short (*coughs* make that short story shorter), there are a few bumps in the road in Deceived, and I lost my way a few times...but the characters and the promise of an epic sequel kept me going, making this a satisfactory story in the end!

EPIC!
I think it's really interesting how the back cover blurb only talks about Therese. So please don't be too shocked when the first chapter starts off with someone else's POV. This book is really about four individuals - and every chapter has a new POV. We jump between all four in a neat and orderly fashion - Holder, Therese, Rogan, Ivelle, repeat! And each POV is labeled at the beginning of the chapter, so I found it quite easy to jump back and forth between the foursome.
Mmmk, with that little bit out of the way lets really dive in. I loved all the main characters- Holder was such a dear - his care for the princess was really sweet. Therese was so desperate - she doesn't want to, but she loves her sisters too much to leave them starving - so she does. Rogan tries to be tough, but he has such a hard life. And I think my favorite character is Ivelle - a fiery young soul with a rough past and a desire to learn the truth.
Ivelle's "family" - oh I loved them. They were misguided, but they were awesome. The villains were awful, the heroes and heroines were epic.
This book was full of action! It kept me sucked right in and I couldn't put it down! I really hate saying this, because I loved this book so much, but it didn't quite meet my expectations. I was so hyped up for it, and don't get me wrong it was EPIC, but maybe just not quite as epic as what was I was prepared for. Some of the action/injury/almost-killed-you scenes didn't seem quite as serious/grave as I thought they should. How many times did Therese almost kill (spoiler 😁)? Many and by the end it just felt like it wasn't as big of a deal as it should have been. Not sure why she wasn't just told to kill him outright - she just kept sneaking in to plant criminal evidence in his bags. I would have rather had one big moment where she tries to kill him and just can't.
The writing was beautiful and epic and grand and the themes and morals in the book were clear and well handled. It begs you to ask the question - What length will you go to for the truth?
The allegory is beautiful - I just - cannot wait for the next to books to learn more. This book introduced mysteries, solved some, and created more. And ugh - can I scream? The ending was just not okay. Totally not fair, Madi. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE UNTIL BOOK 2? Just, no! 😭 But you so have me sucked in - I'm committed to this series, so well done! 👏
There's mentions of romantic relationships between side characters, and hints that there will be romance between MC's in coming books. (Seeing as how romantic relationships are a part of life, unless it's a main character romance, I usually don't characterize side-character or already-married-character romance as making a book a romance. All that to say, this book isn't being added to my romance-shelf. 😉)
There's a lot of violence, assassinations, beatings, threats etc. Everyone has a different level of intense and violent where they draw the line. For me the book wasn't too graphic or intense. I loved it. I hold non-Christians in a fantasy world to a much lower standards than I hold Christians in the real world. I just can't wait to these four truly discover the truth. And I need book two. Now? ASAP!

Just reread this terribly sad, amazing story! I NEED the second book! What happens to Holder and Rogan?😭😭😭😭 I have so many questions and I need them answered! Where is book two?🥺
Other than how terribly sad and tragic that ending was, *sniffs* I enjoyed this book just as much, if not more, my second time around. This is the type of book that you can read again and again and still cry every time. Can’t wait to reread it again :)

The world building was fantastic, it felt so realistic and that we were part of a much bigger world than the few places the main characters went to. The characters were amazing, very life-like and relatable, seeming to spring from the page with a life of their own, and I loved the playful banter between several of them, Holder and Anastasia are adorable! ^_^ Madisyn has a way with words, the descriptions were vivid and I could fully imagine everything. Her prose created a compelling narrative that kept me reading until the very end. If you’d like to read a story filled with adventure, friendships, betrayal, and deception then this story is for you.

I absolutely loved this book. *grins* For some reason I kept getting this lingering feeling that it reminded me of some other book I had loved and had been looking for something like, but whatever the case this book was exactly the book I was craving and in the mood for. Something of the John Flanagan Ranger's Apprentice feel to the worldbuilding, with elements similar to some of Chuck Black's better books were all the similarities I could put my finger on.

I loved that from the beginning as the stories of each character began to unfold, I couldn't tell quite who was in the right or the wrong...I couldn't immediately decipher a hero who always did everything right, because all the characters were so realistically flawed and caught up in their own struggles and roles, so I had to watch as they story played out and choice after choice was presented to them. Now, of course, I have begun to form favorites, but I liked that it didn't feel like the author was making you pick, right from the beginning.

Overall I just found this book to be a satisfying and enjoyable read with an amount of depth and delicate intrigue often lost in the styles of many of today's medieval-styled fantasies. The characters tug and pull you in, no matter what their loyalties are and their pain, struggles, weaknesses, and strengths are so realistic and relatable. I enjoyed every moment of the ride, and found myself holding my breath as I waiting for each subtle and not so subtle plot twist to play out.

Clean read, some brief references to prostitution as something awful and a fair amount of injuries (including some blood) but all portrayed in tasteful way.

It’s certainly a special day when you can review a book for a friend, not to mention be on the beta reading and release team!
I’ve loved witnessing this story’s journey!

This book gave me lots of feels!

From the start, we see Holder as unusual for his consideration towards others than himself amidst a culture, not to mention other members of the castle staff, where you take care of yourself first and foremost.
Even a fellow guard Holder grew up with, Rogan, has this tendency, but as a product of his raising and a tumultuous relationship with his parents, there’s much more beneath his surface.
Throughout the story, Holder does his best to keep the little princess in his care safe, as well as struggle with questions that keep crossing his mind(especially surrounding his parents death).

Not long after we’re introduced to those two, we meet Therese who is caught between a rock and a hard place doing whatever it takes to care for her younger sisters, though she is barely an adult herself.
Next, there’s Ivelle, whose own childhood has been a mesh of the trauma she deals with after the raid of the village where she lost her own family.

All four have their fates intertwine after a series of events lead to conspiracy and distrust of everything they know about the self-proclaimed king and world they live in.

This book shows the cost of doing what’s right, even when everyone around you doesn’t care for it, and searching for the truth all the while there are those who will do anything and everything to keep it from coming to light.

It ends with such a cliffhanger! I couldn’t hardly believe it(I’m still team Rogan though, I WON’T lose faith in you bud 😭).

I do have to say this isn’t my usual style, and things look pretty bleak throughout. There are moments of levity that help but it did take me a bit to get into the story so rounded to 4 stars ⭐️

I am looking forward to the next in the series because I have so many questions that need answers(no pressure or anything 👀)!!!!

I couldn’t stop reading this today & suddenly, it was over. Haha

I loved it. I’ve really grown to love Madisyn’s style of storytelling through several viewpoints.

On a random note, I learned a lot about horses. Hehe They added a lot of fun humor to the story as well.

I am certainly excited for this trilogy to continue because there’s so much potential in store for these worlds & characters.

The allegorical style was very interesting too & I liked the Latin sprinkled in there. The Bible & linguistics nerd in me enjoyed those Easter eggs.

This story has the makings of a great story. The introduction of the characters made the story move a little slowly at first, but speeds up as the action starts taking place. The descriptions of the action are well written and left me on the edge of my seat. The mixing of the Genesis story of angels and the New Testament was not lost on me, andthe identity of King Eligor. The story is exciting, and leaves you waiting for the next book to continue.

"Since when did truth become marked as treason?"

"DECEIVED" by Madisyn Carlin is the first book, in "The Deception Trilogy" and this novel was just...wow.
Carlin created a beautiful allegory with a cast of likable characters and topped it with gripping suspense.

I was surprised by this story and loved the parallels/symbolism. So creative!

I enjoyed "DECEIVED" so much and can't wait to read the next installment! Highly recommend.

I really, really enjoyed this novel!! It kept me intrigued from beginning to end.

What I loved best was the characters. They were real, they struggled and had faults, and they were so well developed! It was wonderful to read about them, their growth, and watch how each of their lives began to intersect. Holder was such a dear, and Rogan balanced him out with his stubbornness and 'grumpy' composure (Ivelle was similar in that reguard...I think they would make a great match *hint hint*) Therese was probably my least favourite of the four; characters that continually justify their bad actions by convincing themselves that it is for the people they love and are caring for, I find to be difficult. That being said, I still enjoyed reading her point of view, though I didn't like her as much.
Usually in novels with multiple points of view, there is one POV that is the 'dreaded' one. This book did not have that, each of the four characters was interesting, well written and developed.
Svetlana was an awful human. That one had major issues.
Can I just say though...Rogan is just the best: "I'm not meant to go airborne." and "Getting offended won't kill her." I love him.

The writing was fantastic, except for a few points where I had to backtrack because I was confused about the way something was phrased or the layout of the dialogue. There were only a few of those moments, though. The plot as well was a bit hard to grasp at some points as well. I think my favourite thing about the writing was the transitions between chapters, most of which were very cleverly done and thought out! Many of them were smooth transitions, which is hard to do when there are four separate characters! Very well done.

I want the next book sooo bad. That ending!!!! AHHH.

I definitely recommend this book! I quite enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Carlin's work in the future!!

It was very confusing at first.
In fact, I had to go back and check that it was really listed as a Christian fiction novel.
I needed a few more clues....
because in the beginning, people looking to the stars for guidance, etc.,
had me wondering if this was some kind of new age novel, or what?

Nevertheless , I kept reading it,
after seeing that,
yes,
it was listed as a Christian novel...

and I am so glad I did keep reading!

Slowly on, the crux of the matter began to get clearer and clearer.
I know some readers like suspense, I do not!
And there was a lot of that,
but the story just kept getting better and better,
so much better that I could even put up with suspense.

I really began to love it, as the Christian aspects started showing up.
But it took about until a third of the way thru!

I especially like that it ended up being about Satan's fall, and Jesus sacrifice.
There were some 'minor' theological issues,
but it is fiction.

It Just kept building up and getting more and more interesting
and the same for the characters.
The changes in them, as they learned the 'TRUTH'
was heartening!

However, another super super dislike for me,
is ending a novel with a major
cliff hanger!
Especially when it means I most likely will have to wait a year.

Still the writing was very good
and I am wishing the 2nd in the series
were available NOW!!!!

Authors, are such an annoying lot....
they never obey my queenly demands to hurry hurry!

Can't live with them sigh
and I can't live without them sigh!

This is a wonderful author and ...
did I mention I want to read the next in the series.... tomorrow?

Amazing characters, fascinating symbolism, excellent premise…

This book was great!!!!! I loved the characters and I was SO INVESTED in their lives and stories!!!!!!!!

I loved the world building in this book!!!!!! The society was so interesting and the little flashback scenes offered such cool insight on the history of the world. (Trying very hard not to spoil too much of the story)

I know several people mentioned the cliffhanger in their reviews. And honestly, I LOVE how Madi put it together. Yes, it was suspenseful and left me wanting to read more, but it also ended the book in a really cool place for each of the characters and highlighted the character development of one particular character SO WELL!!!!!!

Overall, I loved reading this book!!!!!!!! And I’d DEFINITELY recommend it!!!!!!!!! I promise, you will fall in love with the story and the characters just as much as I did!!!!!

I really wanted to love this book since friends of mine have enjoyed it and loved it, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

The fact that it was marketed as an allegory was what peaked my interest, but it took me till nearly halfway through to begin to piece together the story as a recognisable allegory. If I hadn’t known it was an allegory in the beginning, I wouldn’t have expected it to have been one. The world building also took me a while to understand.

I feel a handful of the characters were the strongest part of the story. This story has 4 POVs, and while I love multiple POVs, four almost felt like too many.

I know Holder is a reader favourite, but I actually preferred Rogan and Ivelle. Holder’s loyalty is sweet and admirable, but he comes across as rather immature. As for Rogan, my heart goes out to him, and I think he needs a hug. Can someone just give him a hug please? I know he’s abrupt and borderline rude, but he’s got a tough exterior with a soft heart he’s afraid of showing. However, we get glimpses of it from time to time, and I’m here for it. Rogan and Holder are a great duo though, and so are Rogan and Ivelle - their clashing makes me smile.
As for Therese, while I pity her, I had a hard time liking her and found her rather confusing. When she is first instructed by Scholl to buy herbs and fabric, she says she’s stayed alive by being inconspicuous but in the shop the store girl tells her all her emotions are in her face and she gave herself away. Throughout the story she didn’t struck me as particularly bright as she kept getting caught or almost caught. Her struggle to justify her work as an assassin to save her sisters in real, but occasionally overstated. As for side characters, I loved Borros…such a gentle giant!

Some of the dialogue is rather modern, not quite in keeping with the kingdom era feel, and there is a cliffhanger ending (you’ve been warned!), but those are merely personal preferences.

All in all, I feel this was a good, clean debut novel that others would enjoy; it just wasn’t quite for me. :)

Content: woman is an assassin to keep from being sold as a prostitute; concept of praying to the stars as a form of religion; father beats his son; cursing without the words being used; tattoos as identifying marks

I really enjoyed this book, and need to know what happens next! The many points of view had me confused a couple times, which is why I rated it a 4, but this is action packed!

Page-turning allegory

The author does a great job weaving multiple points-of-view into the story, and I enjoyed seeing how the characters' experiences were all relevant to each other. The Christian allegory gave the story so much depth and meaning. I recommend this book for mature teens through adulthood who appreciate Christian fiction.

Adding it to my “never to be read” bookshelf due to blatant religious allegory

The story was unique, action-packed, and had several surprise twists. I didn't want to set it down while I read it.

The setting was very well described, so I felt like I was really in the story.

I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Loved this book!

It did take me a bit to get into it as the first few chapters did have me a little confused. It introduced a LOT of characters and multiple different perspectives in the first few chapters. (Admittedly, I was feeling sick and tired and was going for a fun read in my favorite genera at the time so it might not have been so hard for me to first get into it it I wasn't already under the weather.) But once each perspective was done being introduced it didn't take long for the character voices to become distinct enough and the stories to make sense! There were a lot of amazingly built characters with such deep and different motivations, and I really enjoyed just how many different journeys were happening and making them all come to the same place in the end.

I loved the allegorical elements. Toward the beginning, I didn't notice them as much but they became larger toward the end as the mystery in it and the truth began to unfold. (I love allegorical Christian fantasy)

There was no strong romance in this book, besides a few mentions of side characters being interested in each other.

Content was clean! The only content warning is there are some brief mentions/depictions of physical abuse and mentions of a character having to choose between being an assassin or a prostitute. There's also some injuries mentioned but nothing gratuitous or descriptive about them in my opinion.

There was a MASSIVE cliffhanger at the end of this story and I NEED to know when the next book is!!!

Oh . . . my goodness.

I was warned that ended on a gigantic cliffhanger. 😶 But wow . . . I was not expecting that.

Welcome to every Madisyn Carlin book ever, hehe.

The concept of this book was much more allegorical-ish than anything I've ever read from Carlin, and I kinda like it. The characters can't stop getting hurt or injured, and the humor was on point when needed. And I think Carlin write some of my favorite female characters ever. 🤣

CONTENT:
The characters pray "to the stars," and use them for guidance, but this later proved to be a false way of life. A horse is constantly referred to as a demon of a horse, of that devilish horse, things like that.
