Never make a deal with the devil–especially if that deal entails holy matrimony.
There’s only one rule my mother passed down to me before she died: Never venture into the east side of Edinburgh. I never questioned it. There are creatures in this world that could hurt us, she’d said. So, I stay away—until my life hits rock bottom, and I find myself curious about the forbidden side of the ancient city. It doesn’t seem all that different here–bars, clubs, restaurants. Just like the human side. One too many drinks later, he finds me. A silly poem and a whispered wish are all it takes for him to rip through the mirror between realms and pin me against a wall. Cruel, inhuman, cunning. A demon—an actual prince from hell. With horns. What could he possibly want from me? Marriage, apparently. Because as it turns out, Bloody Marius is dead serious about upholding his end of the deal.
Blood & Vows is a dark retelling of the legend of Bloody Mary. It is a paranormal romance novella that will leave your kindle sizzling. Please note that this book has dark themes such as forced marriage, kidnapping, dubious consent, violence, and explicit language, which may be triggering for some.
Kory (K.) Easton is the paranormal romance pen name for USA Today bestselling author, Amanda Richardson. She gravitates toward dark tales of otherworldly creatures and beasts. She currently resides in Yorkshire, England, with her husband and two kids.
It's a Bloody Mary (sorta) retelling a.k.a. Bloody Marius. Then add soulmate trope and barbed tail smutty scenes. And there you have it.
It was pretty decent, but from what the author noted in the end, this novella could spawn a full length novel... And I do have to say that I'm interested in going further with this plot.
This is labeled as a Bloody Mary retelling, but it’s so much more than that. This is a 100 page novella, and the author employs such fabulous worldbuilding. Set in a fantastical version of Edinburgh, there are fae and demons and other types of paranormal creatures roaming the streets. This is my first K Easton book, but I’m going to have to check out more by her to see if she has other books set in this fascinating world! Another strength of the novella lies in the heroine. She has a surprisingly detailed backstory, and I felt her pain from the betrayal of the only two people she had in the world. That said, because it’s a novella and a slow burn, I didn’t quite feel the love between the heroine and “Bloody Marius”. It went from zero to full speed ahead awfully quickly, and I think a chapter or two was needed to connect the two.
This novella deviates far from the Bloody Mary story, and if you hadn’t told me that it’s a retelling, I probably wouldn’t have figured it out for myself. I absolutely enjoyed the story and I loved the heroine and I look forward to checking out other books by this author!
Tropes: - genderbent Bloody Mary retelling - fated mates
After catching her best friend and boyfriend of six years banging in her apartment, Liz goes to the ‘wrong side’ of town that is supposedly inhabited by Fae and demons because she has nothing left to live for.
She stumbles upon a regular looking pub, and finds an incantation next to the bathroom mirror, where a handsome man appears to ‘grant’ her wish. Only Liz doesn’t know that he’s actually the devil & he’s her fated mate thanks to a deal he made with her mother eighteen years ago.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from Blood & Vows, I only downloaded it thanks to a tiktok that made it seem super spicy (it wasn’t, not really lol). I think I would have liked it more if it had been a bit longer and more fleshed out. The pacing is super fast & I wanted more out of Marius & Liz’s relationship, as well as her hidden background.
Read this on a whim because BookTok and SmutTok agreed that this was a masterpiece. Unsurprisingly, they were sorely mistaken; I can safely say you'll find better on AO3.
This book was far from good and certainly not enjoyable. I'm a stubborn reader, so I tend to finish books regardless of whether or not I like them; this story tested me a bit, but I still managed to finish (largely in part to how short the novel is). This book was extremely poorly paced and even more poorly planned. It felt like the author was chugging coffee the entire time they wrote it and the caffeine rotted their brain a bit. There was not a moment spared to get to know the world, the characters, or to witness any sort of relationship bloom. All this author cared about was getting to the sex... And it was mediocre at best. There were only two scenes and they were short & rushed(shocker), slightly confusing, and nowhere near steamy enough to account for the rest of the book. The writing style itself wasn't particularly bad, but the sheer lack of detail in... well, ANYTHING, made the book a drag to get through . With how quickly things moved and how short the book was, that's genuinely kinda impressive lol
Elizabeth is having the worst day of her life. She lost her job, her boyfriend cheated on her - with her bestie and roommate, and all she wanted was a quiet drink to forget her troubles. Not even that goes right. She uses the restroom in the bar and is inexplicably drawn to the mirror. When she recites an incantation, a man appears before her, claiming Liz is his mate. She belongs to him and he’s been searching for her for years.
Marius has, indeed, been looking for his mate for years. Her mother made a pact with him. A blood pact that can’t be broken, at least not without severe consequences for them both. Now that he’s found her, he’s not about to let her slip through his fingers again. She belongs to him.
Marius opens Liz’s eyes to a whole new world, one she only ever caught glimpses of. Now that secrets have been exposed, lies have been discovered, and a new life dangles before her, will Liz choose the presumed saints or sinners?
As always, reading an Amanda Richardson (K Easton) book is a special treat. It’s more than just a story. You are taken on a journey with the characters. The world building here is wonderful. You can feel the emotions and atmosphere of every scene. The smexy scenes were smoking (literally) and I now feel extremely deprived that I don’t know anyone with a tail or ability to smite my enemies. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Then send Ms Richardson a thank you card for deciding to expand this into a series.
This is pretty much everything I look for in a novella. Quick, dirty, dramatic.
This could and should be a full length novel. Amanda Richardson as K. Easton has the bones for what could be an extremely intriguing and riveting novel or series.
*Sidenote: going through the reviews I notice the low ratings are mostly attributed to the book not having enough detail, not being long enough, reader's who want more. It is a novella (that needs to be stressed) - less than 200 pages. If you enjoy a quick and dirty, extremely fast-paced read, this is for you.
This is a short length novella in a series of Twisted Legends retelling but with smut. So safe to say I enjoyed it 😂 In this one, Elizabeth, Daughter of Mary, ends up being blood promised the Marius the Bloody (it’s a Mary the blood retelling) but it turns out they’re mates and get to live happily ever after. Except he is the literal devil. With horns. And a tail. Which he uses to his advantage 😏 There is a bit of plot here and the author is turning it into a fully length story in 2023 which I CANNOT WAIT FOR!
Tropes: Paranormal / Fantasy Interspecies Romance Fated mates
I absolutely loved this book! This twisted retelling of the Bloody Mary urban legend was amazing! It had elements of Hades and Persephone and a perfect one bed trope! I loved Marius and Liz’s story and I want more of them! I want to see Liz become the powerful being she’s hinted at! The smut took some time to appear, but it made sense with their building relationship and it was so worth the wait! K. Easton, AKA Amanda Richardson did an amazing job with this first PNR story! I love her writing style! I definitely recommend this book!
K. Easton knocked it out of the park with this novella! I LOVED this retelling of Bloody Mary and the unique spin the author put on it. I can’t wait to read the full length novels she is writing on Liz and Marius 😍
I really enjoyed this - part of the Twisted Legends collection, this is novella in size and I devoured it in one sitting!! A retelling of the Bloody Mary urban legend, this gave me a real taster of what a full size story would be, and I must say I am looking forward to that immensely!!
The world building for this was great - full of demons, fae, vampires and other mystical creatures. It definitely gets a little hot and spicy as it gets going with mating bonds, knotting and a tail that can do wonderful things!!
Liz has had a really bad week and ends up going to a part of Edinburgh that her mother warned her to stay away from - she's inquisitive and needs some alcohol! She goes into a bar, Dante's Inferno, and quickly gets wasted, going to the bathroom she finds a mirror with rhyme attached to it, which she repeats, unknowingly reaching into another dimension and calling upon Marius.
Marius has been looking for Liz for the past 18 years, after her mother called upon him to cure her daughter - the bargain being her daughter's hand in marriage in return for the cure. But she managed to obscure Liz from Marius so he couldn't find her. But now she has called him herself, and he is going to have what is his.
This is going to be a fantastic world! I loved the characters and their potential - I can't wait to read a full version of this story. Definitely worth the read for any dark pnr / demon lovers out there!
I don’t often read a lot of paranormal romance as it's not my favourite genre. However, I decided to give this one a go.
Blood & Vows is a dark retelling of the urban legend Bloody Mary and follows the story of Liz, who is part fae, and Marius, who is the devil himself 😈
The story line is great, the banter is hilarious and the smut is hottttttt 🥵🥵🥵
Being a novella, Blood and Vows is a very quick read but it will still grab you and leave you wanting more! As always though, please read the trigger warnings first before diving in !
K. Easton, AKA Amanda Richardson did a great job with her first paranormal story!
I cannot wait for 2023 when these two get their own full-length book!! 🖤
If you’re in the market for dark romance, fantasy retelling, or even just good smut, I’d recommend you go literally anywhere else. I did not read this expecting substance but I’ve truly read fanfics the same length that were much better written.
I absolutely loved this dark retelling of the Legend of Bloody Mary! It was a hot, paranormal, forced marriage, fated mates, one-bed novella I devoured faster than I thought possible. The author has put a unique spin of this known tale and I was here for it. There were also hints of the Hades and Persephone myth which is one of my favorite myths. This book was a slow burn and it took a while for us to get to the spice, but the relationship building and character development made it worth the wait!
This is my first read by K. Easton (Amanda Richardson) and I cannot wait for this novella to be expanded into a series!
Loosely based off the Bloody Mary legend, we see Elizabeth say magic words into a mirror calling on Bloody Marius, King of the Underworld. Secret are revealed & Elizabeth's world is completely changed.
There are otherworldly creatures, mating bonds, knotting and super spicy scenes. It was an easy read & a perfect starter for anyone just venturing into the paranormal side and one my PNR lovers will greatly enjoy!
I LOVED this book and am anxiously awaiting 2023 when these two are supposed to get their own full-length books!
I received an Advanced Copy of Blood & Vows a Bloody Mary retelling with a unique twist. What can I say, except I loved it. Who knew the devils tail could be H.O.T. Hot!! Hoping it is made into a two book series as I definitely want to explore more about this world and these characters.
I guess nothing was wrong with the book per say...it just didn't do anything for me. Didn't grasp my attention. I also don't love that it specifically said it's a "dark romance" but then nothing about it was dark whatsoever, that's disappointing.
I'll be honest and say that my expectations for this were pretty low, only because the smaller the page count is for a story, the less faith I have that the author will be able to balance everything. I was also expecting this to be a spice heavy book because I'm used to stories of this length being no plot and all spice. I am quite happy to report that this book surprised me in the best way! The story starts with a bang beginning with the first chapter and while I know the story was inspired by the legend of Bloody Mary I absolutely loved the paranormal world that Amanda created. I'm a huge fan of having several branches of folklore in one story so I really loved the fact that this had fae, vampires, monsters, and demons to name a few. I can also admit that another one of the reasons I loved it was cause I recently visited Edinburgh myself so being able to picture everything and know where she was going was awesome! 🏴
My only critique is that I was a bit confused when it came to the anatomy of Marius if you catch my drift. It could just be me, but the barbs confused me when it came to what they looked like and it was all I could focus on whenever they showed up! 🤣 Overall, I loved Elizabeth and Marius together and I was so happy to see that the author has plans to expand their story into two full-length books next year! There's definitely room for it and I would definitely want to see if she adds anything new to the story because in my opinion, there are so many places that she could take it!
Blood and Vows is part of the Twisted Legends Collection by various authors and is loosely based on the legend of Bloody Mary. It is a paranormal, arranged marriage novella that follows Marius and Liz. It was a quick read, that gave us great banter, steamy scenes, interesting world building with otherworldly creatures, mating bonds, knotting and an great story line. This novella really gave us a taste of what is expected in the coming 2 book novel and I cant wait. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to lovers of dark paranormal romance.
Blood and Vows is a quick steamy read based on Bloody Mary, an urban legend, and I was here for it.
Even if PNR is not what you usually read, give this a chance; I loved it.
Liz is devasted; she just caught her boyfriend and best friend screwing each other, and all she wants is to forget the whole thing. She finds a bar and starts drinking before leaving, she goes to the bathroom, reads a poem, and makes a wish for someone to look after her, and Marius, the devil himself, appears. Liz will soon learn that her mother has promised her to Marius, and she must marry him.
I am so excited that these characters will be getting two full-length novels. I can't wait to read them!!
Loved getting to read this take on Bloody Mary. The author does a great job of balancing the steam, romance, and the edge and paranormal. I was sucked into the world and can't wait to see more of Liz and Marius.
Demon boyfriend? Check. European ambience? Check. Kidnapping as a love language? Check. Urban legend retelling? Check. Oh yes, this one picked my interest very easily! I was not disappointed. I do have a type and that’s demons, so I obviously loved the mmc! He’s the dark mysterious brooding morally grey male every reader loves. The history is very interesting, and I’m eager to read more about it in future books! It’s a slow burn and the spice is delicious. That tail of his is something else. Delicious. Definitely recommend for every paranormal romance fans!
Alrighty, let's gooooo!!!! Another paranormal book after a very long time. Blood & Vows is a dark retelling of the legend of Bloody Mary. It is a paranormal romance novella that will leave you sizzling❤️🔥🔥🥵. Hope, y'all survive it because I sure as hell hope that I survive through it all in one piece after I finish this book (oops, did I mention that this story is about the King of the Underworld, the devil, no? Well...good luck)
Betrayed by the people she trusted the most, the FMC, aka, Liz, she goes off to that part of the city, her mother warned her never to go to - East Edinburgh, the other side of the town where dark creatures reside. She goes there because she is fed up of this life and finally wants to give it up by facing something her mother told her not to....will she survive it? Or will she die? The answer will be given at the end...but end of what?
Okay, so a heartbroken Liz, after catching her boyfriend and her bestfriend in bed with each other, goes to the East side of Edinburgh and goes into a bar called Dante's Inferno 🥃 gets drunk and spills her heartache to a bartender, Rory and then spills about her 'suspicions/speculations' about the paranormal world regarding which Rory dismisses her but she then ask for the restroom. On her way back from the restroom, she finds a piece of paper with a poem written on it on a wall next to THE MIRROR. Talking of Bloody Marius (Bloody Mary's male version, nice name though). It's gonna get exciting on the road ahead, you've been warned⚠️🛤
When she recites the poem, and wishes for the one thing she really craves, there stands a man, from another era, young, wise yet powerful. Oh my Lord! Drop dead gorgeous is that man with black hair, red eyes, red horns, cold skin and a power that relaxes Liz without any difficulty😍 Marius is the name🥵
When the chapter shifts to Marius' pov, it is shown that he is caught off-guard yet he is very certain that she is HIS. And it seems that he had known her mother for he says, "Red hair, just like her mother." And it also seems, he has know Liz for quite sometimes now because as he said "she looks so different from the last time I saw her." Well, isn't that interesting.....
Oh My GOD! The next chapter reveals soooo much about how Marius knows who her mother is and who Liz is, but poor Liz, she doesn't know anything. Her mother kept it from her. And now she is gonna get to know everything that ever happened.
Their arguments even when Marius doesn't wanna argue with his mate, Liz pokes him all the time and it is infuriatingly funny and cute. The spicy scenes are volcanic because it is after all the devil, monster sex at its best🔥
A nice novella that gets you out of a reading slump✨️
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was so good! But I need more, I needed it to be longer and just more. Loved the storyline and the smut. I also feel like Rory needed a bigger role, he was fun.
This is the 5th book in the Twisted Legends Collection and the first book that I’ve read by this author. I have never read a Bloody Mary retelling and this has me wanting so much more. It’s dark, raw and involves forced marriage, kidnapping, dub con and more so please check the trigger warnings. I was hooked right from the beginning. Character development and world building were great. Definitely going to go back and read the first 4 books.
Liz is a strong, smart and fierce FMC who was warned by her mother to not step foot in the east side of Edinburgh. While life isn’t going well for her currently, she decides she’s curious. She doesn’t see much of a difference in the outside, but it’s what’s lies beneath she should be afraid of. After several drinks, Liz ends up summoning Bloody Marius through a mirror from his realm. Now he wants her, in all ways possible. Can Liz resist Marius in his sexy, dark, dangerous and possessive ways or will she succumb to him?
Such a good book. I wished it was longer though. Full of twists, danger, action, violence and secrets in this paranormal romance. Can I summon my own Bloody Marius?! Can’t wait to read more from this author.
I received this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
*** Thank you to the author and The Smuthood for providing me with the eARC in exchange for my honest oppinion. ***
This book is amazing. This story is about retelling of the Bloody Mary legend. Elizabeth, after having a shitty day, goes to a part of the city that her mother always warned her about and told her there are dangerous things there. In a club there she ends up saying magical words into a mirror and she ends up calling on a Bloody Marius, the King of the Underworld. A lot of secrets come to light after that about Elizabeth, her mom, Marius and eventualy her ex-boyfriend.
This story has otherworldly creatures, such as faries and fays, witches, vampires and many many more. This book also contains mating bonds, knotting and very spicey scenes.
This was quick and easy, but very much so a fun read. This story is perfect for anyone who wants to venture into the paranormal world with a splash of spice.
I enjoyed this book so much and I am now anxiously waiting for 2023 to come, because that is when these two are supposed to get their own full-length books. Can't wait!!!!
