Events in Innsmouth are moving to a climax. The Esoteric Order of Dagon are determined to bring about the end of the world with the summoning of the Elder God: Dagon. The order’s leaders refuse to acknowledge the repercussions of their act. And they are determined to make the seas boil and the dead rise as they prepare for Armageddon.
But one fearless lecturer from Innsmouth University understands the impending perils. He believes the Esoteric Order can be stopped. And all he needs to do is to help three dangerous individuals escape from Sefton Institute for the Criminally Insane.
With this series of Dr Lister's novellas telling dark tales of Innsmouth I have been pacing myself rather than binge reading all six. The good news is that they've all been enjoyable reads thus far. The bad news is that I never got around to reviewing Unearthed, Cursed or Kurgan and, as I feel that I should review books whilst they're fresh in my mind, I'm not likely to remedy this in the short term. Maybe I'll do that when I re-read them, as they're worthy of a revisit.
All of this leads me to book five - Escape. This is the book where strands from the previous four books come together. The assorted characters introduced in Fearless and its successors play their part as the story arc reaches a climax. The relevance of their individual stories becomes clearer. The tension is ramping up for the final book - Dagon.
Ghosts, shadow demons, zombies, mad scientists - they're all here, but not as clichés. They are all integrated in an original story populated with a cast of flawed characters. In fact, I don't think any of the characters are nice people. That's Ashley's strength. He can write about the scum of the earth and whilst not exactly empathising with them (I'd be worried if anyone did), one can root for the lesser bad guys in their conflict with the really bad guys.
They're not all guys, by the way.
So what do I think? Well, rather than procrastinating, I'm giving it a positive review, so that's a good sign. Also, I won't be pacing myself before I start reading the next (and final) novella in the series. I've already started it.
Escape is the fifth book in the Dark Tales from Innsmouth series by Ashley Lister. This book begins with an ominous prologue, but you have to have read the first four books to understand the implications because it references Fearless, which is book one. From there, the story proceeds at an incredible pace. You won’t want to put it down.
As with the previous books in the series, Escape has incredibly engaging and evocative dialogue. I adore Lister’s characterization and character interaction. He has created a brilliant new dimension of character-driven story as the characters collectively drive the story without overwriting or tedious extra narration and without compromising the plot in the slightest.
This unpredictable story flows from one jaw-dropping thing to the next, as lister seems wont to do, and does so seamlessly and without breaking the tension. The brutal action and nail-biting tension are quite complimentary to the dialogue. Between the tension, the pace, and the evocative dialogue, I’m spent. But I also cannot wait for the next one.
This is a cosmic horror gem in a masterfully done series. Highly recommended.
I really want to see this series on Netflix or something. The imagery is brilliant. Each book ties together with the 'oh my god' moments. I'm not ready for this series to be over.
Ps. Thanks for making me the human sacrifice that brings about the end of the world 😂😂
Brilliant piece of writing. Thoroughly recommend to anyone who loves supernatural plots. Amazing!!

I must admit that, although I enjoyed this, I did struggle at times to keep track of all the different characters being brought in from the previous books in the series.
As always, with everything I've read so far from this author, there was the need to go look up words I'd never heard before and research how much, if any of the historical references were factual. I enjoy the added learning with my adventures, so thankyou 😀

The fifth book in the Tales of Innsmouth series did not disappoint. The previous stories whilst connected by location and a few key characters have been the perfect build up to this penultimate installment. The fast pace is a nail-biting precursor to the final battle to come in Dagon, a finale I am literally counting down the days to get my hands on.
