DC Holly Towns #5

Goodbye Lake Street

Rate this book
A fanatical group of vigilantes. One local police unit. One international task force. An ex-con with a grudge… Plus a child abduction. It all adds up to a nightmare.

Police and a secret group of citizen investigators are locked in a battle for child safety, and Detective Constable Holly Towns finds herself trapped between the two.

Holly is paired with a new detective from the Sex Crimes Unit. Detective Danny Cavallo is working with a cross-border task force on human trafficking. And reporter Missy McLaren swears that the underground vigilante crew has the answers.

But Holly distrusts the group and its criminal history, and when an explosive takedown rocks the city with accusations and the promise of more violence, she becomes even more convinced that the truth lies hidden elsewhere.

Can her notorious combination of hard work and off-beat intuition pay off before the kidnapper circles back to claim victory?

I love writing every day and the result so far is three mystery series, and counting. I’ve been retired from teaching for a couple of years, and am totally immersed in my new career as a mystery writer. I hope you enjoy the results!
The Murder In Season trilogy features injured detective constable Claire Beckett.
The longer Poodle Versus… series is a reader favorite. It features small-town action, zany characters, and a Nasty Small Poodle who will capture your heart.
This year I plan to release several books following DC Holly Towns, starting with Goodbye Port Alma.
The Free Prequels to all my series are available on my website, AnneShillolo.com.

Happy reading!

Anne Shillolo has done it again! Action packed and entertaining.

This book in her series (A DC Holly Towns Murder Mystery) (A Port Alma Murder Mystery) is number 5. You may find that there are some hard hitting topics in this book (human trafficking, murder, drug use, etc.…) and if you are sensitive to those topics you may want to steer clear. Other than that, this book is a phenomenal read.

I received this book from the author and this is my honest review.

Wow! It seems like each Port Alma book gets better than the last! And this one is no exception, as Constable Holly Towns, a passionate and dedicated detective is on the hunt for clues again. And this time there are so many different crimes in the same time frame, that it seems they must be connected, but no one can figure out how. An 11-year-old girl is abducted but gets free; the RCMP is investigating a child PRN website; a vigilante team is hunting and outing men who are into children; and then there are the 3 murders on, you guessed it, Lake Street! This is a very fast paced and fast breaking investigation, and you never know what’s going to happen next. I love this series! I highly recommend it to anyone who likes exciting police procedurals with great characters! I received a free ARC of this book, and write this review voluntarily.

I love this series and have to go back since I missed a few. If they're anywhere near as good as this book it will be worth it. The characters are engaging and the author has developed an interesting storyline. The mystery surrounding the main plot of the book has a surprise twist and there are lesser crimes to solve as well.

When Danny's daughter is abducted it is Holly and another member of the team searching for her and her abductor. As the search ramps up other crimes needing a solving are revealed.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

"Goodbye Lake Street by Anne Shilolo

Anne Shilolo is, it must be said, a fabulous writer. She has joined my very short list of writers whose books deserve to have anything else I am doing put to one side until I have sat and finished reading them (the list contains 2 Australian writers, 2 British writers and now 1 Canadian writer).

Goodbye Lake Street finds us back in Port Alma with Constable Holly Towns.  It opens with the abduction of a child, daughter to one of the other police officers who now works with the RCMP instead of the local department.  The girl is found, unharmed, having escaped under her own steam but it is thanks to the excellent surveillance equipment used by Holly's downstairs neighbour, Grace Winston, that gives them a possible clue to the perpetrator.  However, thanks to a number of security tracking devices that Holly had attached to various items of the girl's clothing they soon have the missing child back home with her parents.  However,  it appears as though this case might be associated with a much larger case the local department is working on and even more alarmingly, it might also turn out to be associated with a totally different, and much larger, investigation that the RCMP are currently undertaking into online child pornography (specifically human trafficking between the US and Canada with special emphasis on child protection), a nasty subject and one that the writer has approached in a very sympathetic and non confrontational manner sticking strictly to the subject as it pertains to the storyline.

In the meantime, Port Alma has had a number of dead bodies found on the streets (and bear in mind this novel is set in the midst of winter, not a time you want to be spen ding time outside at night under dressed or under the influence) who appear to have died from the drug ketamine* - a drug with a number of uses one of which has valuable potential in treating certain human conditions which didn't help in locating the source of the ketamine for the purposes of the story -  and were last seen in a local nightclub Portias. They have no idea how the drug entered their system or who and how it was added  to their drinks. Things worsen when a third victim turns up in the middle of a blizzard only this time the victim is an undercover RCMP cop.  There is also an incident which highlights the problems when a vigilante group can go off half cocked and mess something up, in this case targeting an innocent person they think is involved in the entrapment of children on line but who turns out to have thought he was meeting another adult with whom he intended discussing a totally different, and legal, business idea. A giant mix up between a vigilante group, concerned parents who fail to ensure their daughter can't access the online account they made when using her to trap a possible predator and a child who, able to access the account her parents made, uses an image of a much older person to appear at least a decade older than she really is.  But it takes the expert statistical eye of another of Holly's friends, Shirley Egan,  who provides a valuable insight into how all these cases tie up together, or rather may not all be the same case and the help of a retired baker with sharp eyes (who is also willing to provide the local CIU with snacks) to turn a faint glimmer into a near certainty and separate who is doing what and any, or no, connections they may have to the other cases.  Unfortunately the novel has a tragic ending, however it also has a positive outlook, an officer who hopes to return to the Port Alma CIU and the possible romance between Holly Towns and another officer who has just asked her to spend a week away at an all inclusive resort with him and his teenage (almost) daughter.

This is an absolutely brilliant police procedural novel, one which doesn't get bogged down in minutiae but keeps on going at a pace that draws the reader in and makes it very hard to put the book down, hard enough that the only reason I went to bed last night was because my kindle went flat and, being a fairly new one, it appears I can't charge it and read it at the same time.  Very annoying but it did ensure a few hours sleep. The storyline is riveting and it is very safe to say that I simply didn't see the end coming at all.  You get glimpses to hint at various viable ''they did it'' members of the cast but nothing that proves anything. Right until the very end that is, and it is an end you don't see coming.  Probably the best book yet in the series and I really hope there will be many more to come.  I should also add it is a real pleasure to read a book that is, what I would call, a proper full length novel.  As in the older books written by, for example, Dorothy Sayers or R H vanGulik,  Novels that take more than a few hours in an evening to read (unfortunately this appears to be the new length for many books, I may be a fairly fast reader but it should take me a day at least to read a book, not just a couple of hours in an evening) are becoming increasingly rare and it is a true pleasure to find a writer who is able to fill a ''proper'' length book with a riveting story such that the reader finds it difficult, or impossible, to put the book down before the end is reached.  Anne Shilolo is one of those, increasingly few in number, writers and I can't praise the books highly enough.

*Usually known as a horse tranquiliser or an illegal drug used by dealers in various ways it is also. For anyone interested in the genuine usages of ketamine, I recommend you investigate Brisbane University/Hospital where it is being successfully used, in conjunction with therapy, to help those with severe depression leading to suicidal thoughts.  If this helps someone who is in this state then it was worth the couple of lines to mention it."

Outstanding

This is a splendid murder mystery that's absolutely thrilling to the core. Every page makes you wonder what's going to happen next. These are the signs of an excellent crime thriller. I found it very gripping and couldn't stop reading even for a moment. Hats off to the author for a wonderful highly entertaining book.
Detective Danny Cavallo working for RCMP( Royal Canadian Mounted Police) has been recently recruited from Port Alma' s Police Department ( Criminal Investigation Unit) for a special operation ( Operation Ladybird) to crack on the cases of human trafficking, especially child abuse. He is worried because his daughter, Jaime, hasn't texted him. It turns out that someone has kidnapped her. He is so frantic with worry that he even rejects the dinner invite from his former colleague, DC Holly Towns. DC Holly with DC Nathan Keele are knee deep involved in the twin murder investigations of Mark Allenby and Warren Quick. Both were shady characters and high levels of ketamine was found in their blood. Holly's investigations lead to a racket of child pornography. Who is the mastermind behind these heinous crimes? Is Jaime's kidnapping related to these murders? Will she be found alive or dead? There are plenty of twists, turns, and surprising revelations to keep you glued to this thriller. The suspense and thrill is well maintained, but hats off to DC Holly for her sensational detective skills.

I am so impressed with this book that I would consider giving it another read. Do grab this book and enjoy a great crime thriller.

Goodbye Port Alma - Surprised and excited to find this author. Finally after all the trash I have to wade through to find an author that cannot only write an interesting story with good characters and good story lines, but also does not use profanity, knows proper grammar and punctuation and does not feel the need to add current politics. Refreshing. Fast-paced. Ready for the next book. 5*

Goodbye Lake Street - One big mistake made: Why wasn't 911 called either while she was chasing her or after the other incident was under control? Fifteen minutes is too long to remember the chased. Otherwise, a good relaxation. I missed the three previous books but it did not affect the story, stand alone. Good, clean read with good characters and good story lines. Easy to read and fast-paced till the last page. 4*

Goodbye Foxbridge Lane, prequel - Interesting, short introduction to the Goodbye series. Good characters and good story lines. 4*

Goodbye Sky Field, #6 - Well written with intense story lines had me immersed in the pages, taking my time to read this book. Holly did well with all the cases from one day's events and the personal attack that puts her behind the desk. The ending was a cheerful balance to the heavy topics unfolding through out the story. Probably the best book so far. 5*

Another brilliant book in Anne Shillolo’s Goodbye Series. The romance between Holly and Cavallo can progress now they are no longer working together. But will it? It’s good to see so many old faces from the previous books in the series and watch their characters develop as the story progresses.

Holly and her colleagues have their hands full in this book. Someone is poisoning suspected paedophiles, there is a vigilante group setting up sting operations, often with violent outcomes and someone is trying to get revenge on Cavallo through his daughter Jaime. We also touch on child abuse and domestic violence. So, a totally action packed story alongside Anne Shillolo’s brilliant description of the magnificent Canadian scenery and Port Alma itself, which sounds like the perfect place to live (apart from the serial killers).

The excitement and shocks continue until the very last chapter and I am so happy there will be a sixth book in this series.

Are the Port Alma police ready for the crime wave that will stretch their resources and drain them all emotionally? DC Holly Towns wants to helps Jaime by finding the man who abducted her even if it hurts her relationship with Danny Cavallo, her father and Holly's coworker. I admire Holly. She's smart and sees clues that other may not see. The vigilantes and the murders of two men suspected of being predators add to the team's frustration. Holly and the others are working hard to find the person responsible. When one of their own becomes a victim, I was shocked. I had to know if they would every find the killer. This story was a roller coaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns. DC Holly Towns continues to dominate with her sharp wit and keen mind. I, also, enjoy Port Alma and the other colorful characters. I never expected the ending. Goodbye Lake Street was amazing. Ann Shillolo has written an amazing story. This series keeps getting better.

This book is not my usual genre, I try to avoid realism in my reading 😄. Child abduction, pornography rings, police work hit too close to home. Having said that, this book is hard to put down. While it partly feels like a journalistic expose, because it is so realistic; it is enticing because the characters and plot line are so believable.
The main thing I liked is the strong portrayal of the young girl, Jaime and the female detective Holly, with the human counterpoint of the other characters. I have trouble with "in your face woman power", but Jaime and Holly are strong and smart while being respectable, likeable and human. The other characters are not dumbed down or stereotyped to play up Jaime and Holly. Instead, they are recognizable characters with relatable traits themselves.
The story reads convincingly, accurately and in a very compelling manner. I would recommend this read to anyone who likes gritty, true crime concept novels.

This is the best book of the series yet and deserves more than 5 stars! Holly is involved in multiple crimes at one time. It begins with a child abduction, dead bodies and a vigilante group. On top of all that, a blizzard is making investigations difficult to conduct. Danny, her former partner who is currently working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on a secondment, can’t be consulted on one of the investigations since it hits close to home for him. With the help of her neighbors, her brother and her cohorts, join Holly as she puts the pieces together to come solve these cases. The many twists and turns of this book keeps you reading to see what happens next. There is more to tell but don’t want to give any spoilers. This is a must read!

Holly has evolved into an exceptional detective who can methodically think through a crime, analyze the evidence, and put theories together to solve the crimes. She has a special knack for thinking outside the box which Danny has mentioned to her. The characters are totally defined by their personalities, their decisions and the way they work through this storyline.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

DC Danny Cavallo's daughter Jamie is missing. DC Holly Towns had installed a tracking on hers and Cavallo's phone with the trackers on Jamie's backpack and key fob. Unknowingly to Jamie or Danny, Holly had placed separate trackers in Jamie's right shoe and jacket. Therefore, they are able to find Jamie after she escapes from her captor. Holly's Unit is involved in the murder of two men suspected to be involved in under age child pornography. Danny is also working with another unit on tracking and closing the pornographic site. A group of vigilantes are also doing their best to capture and expose the people using the site. Can they find the killer as well as the kidnapper?

I am voluntarily reviewing this book after receiving it free from the author.

Port Alma is plagued by a myriad of crimes in the middle of a blizzard: murder by poisoning, child abduction, domestic violence, etc. DC Holly Towns and her colleagues have to pull out all the stops to solve the puzzle and identify the culprits.
This latest book in The DC Holly Towns Murder Mysteries just confirms what I already knew: Anne Shillolo is an amazing writer. She consistently creates interesting characters, beautiful locations, and ingenious plots. Her murder mysteries have cinematic potential and unexpected plot twists from start to finish. But also a lot of humour and a complicated romance. A winning combination!

Everything that I love in a book is here. Holly is growing as a team player. Port Alma is beset by winter. There have been two murders of young men, now Danny’s daughter is missing. Fortunately Holly has placed several tracers on her and she is smart enough to escape from her captor and hide until Holly and Danny reach her. Danny is on secondment to the RCMP so Holly is paired with other partners to work on the murders as well as trying to find the culprit for the kidnapping. The investigations seem to be going nowhere even though they are busy with clues and interviews. The twist at the end is heart wrenching.

What a web this author weaved into this book. From murder, car theft, child pornography, child abduction, domestic abuse, suicide, catching jewel thieves and even a bit of romance. I am amazed as to the skilled way that the author was able to weave the background stories into the book without it interfering with the topic of the story. Just a warning, once you start reading this book your going to have a hard time putting it down until you finish reading the entire book.

Riveting Set of Cases Are They Intertwined?
This book is the fifth in the DC Townes series. They can be read separately, but are likely to be enjoyed more if read in order as the characters change and grow over time. The story is suspenseful and surprising. I stayed up way past bedtime because I could just not put it down. The story takes place in the wintertime on the shores of Lake Ontario. The snow and cold add much to the investigation. I have read the entire series and look forward to the next installment.

I was immediately pulled into the middle of all that was happening in this fast-paced, addictive police procedural with a great cast of characters, vigilantes, child abduction, and a suspenseful twisty mystery that had me on the razor's edge. i absolutely love DC Holly Towns and enjoy her dynamic with the secondary characters and look forward to her next adventure. If you enjoy smartly written fast-paced mysteries with complex characters and lots of twists and turns, you will love Goodbye Lake Street.

This time DC Holly Towns is involved in a few different crimes. The main two are intertwined, child abduction & pedophiles. Are they connected or not? Two men have been found dead, killed by an overdose of a date rape drug. There is a vigilante group tracking the men who are involved in a child porn ring. I suggest that if you cannot read this book in one sitting, stop about halfway through, else you may just have to keep reading!

Holly has a new partner assigned to her and their first case revolves around a missing child. Could this just be a runaway or something more sinister at hand?

Even the citizens are not sure since there is a group believing it is the work of a vigilantes while it could be child trafficking. Holly isn’t sure what to believe as her top priority is to find the child alive. Will the outcome be happy or deadly?

It is an intriguing story.

The book opens with Danny Cavallo in a meeting with other detectives. He keeps looking at his phone. His daughter is supposed to text and say she is home. He is getting worried he texts her no answer. He gets up and says my daughter is missing.
Holly Towns (another Detective and friend she is working on a double homicide .) had put a tracker in her coat and shoe and backpack.
This book had me in the 1st chapter. You have to read.

The story just ripped me apart; Who is involved, the reactions, and the possible future for one of the characters. If I had been the one investigating this I would’ve been torn to shreds with the evidence that came in and who was involved. Tightly woven storytelling, weaving several storylines together and coming up with this ending! I love this series and I really can’t wait to read the next book!

I like this series. Truthfully, I did not think I would, but I really really do.
The twists and turns are great. I think any book where I have not figured out the ending half way through is a great mystery. I have not once figured out the ending until pretty close to the end....if then. Plus, there is always a plot within a plot or two separate (you THINK) plots or story lines.

But DC Holly Towns and Anne Shillolo on your list

I'm on to the next one.......

An excellent dectective story involving D C Holly Towns. A series of murders involving a certain drug and a child pornography ring is leading the city detectives in circles. DC Towns seems to have a sixth sense in slving difficult cases and this is no acception. A very surprosed ending and well worh reading. Will keep you on the seat of your chair until the end.

For Towns, this case is going to hit close to home. She is not sure if her budding romance with Danny will survive the turmoil of this case. There is murder, kidnapping and lots of surprises along the way. The scenes are descriptive and there are some fabulous characters to keep you entertained as you read through this novel.

Holly Woods now a Detective Constable with the Port Alma Police Department. Its winter time, lots of snow. Holly gets involved with a case when her former partners daughter was abducted. The scenery is so described that after a while I felt like I was there following her as more crimes were being solved. As usual with Holly a surprise ending!

Ms Towns is at it again and boy it was difficult putting this book down! I’m fairly new to the author but that has now changed! I will read all her books if they are half as great as this. I don’t do spoilers, just buy the book and read it! Read them all - you won’t be sorry.

Fast paced, gritty action thriller

DC Holly Towns has an instinct for the truth. She is relentless is seeking the motive for the murders of two men, who on the face of things do not have any connection. Can she find the murderer before a child is abducted? Another brilliant book.

The Title is Appropriate

Once you finish the book, the title hits you over the head. The story has Holly and her new partner following three murders and Danny's daughter's failed abduction. Are the two crime threads connected? This is one of the most intense reads yet.
