A nice soft audio read, with outstanding narration by Katy Sobey. The accents, the voices from gender to gender, serious to funny, were done supremely well.

Liv Green is a likeable protag, though initially very well inclined to let others walk all over her! This was frustrating, especially in scenes where carrying out her cleaning duties, she cops ample disrespectful behaviour from annoying, arrogant, and insipid characters. These were done well; a beauty homeschooling blogger letting her children run wild, Liv always seems to have to feed these cherubs, even deliver the tossy husband a bagel for lunch. These were cringy moments, with a touch of humour. This wit Liv posessed showed itself throughout, and Liv was able to take the harder moments with tenacity.

Liv loves to read and, also, to write. She has scored a great job working as a cleaner to author extraordinaire, Essie Starling. The author has become a recluse, much to the dismay of her almost cult-like following. Essie got Liv through some challenging times as a youngster, and Essie has given her some part-time work. Essie is hard to like, she is reclusive, angry, and bitey. Essie is hiding a lot from her past, and Liv is intrigued to say the least.

As the story progresses, I certainly noticed it was fanciful, but I was rewarded with an ending that befits Liv and Essie.

I love hearing about the publishing industry and the writing process, and this book was full of all these things. Essie's story from university through to her death and working with Liv was interesting and watching to see if Liv had what it took to fulfill her hero's last wish was rewarding.

This book was well written, quirky, and unexpectedly edge of your seat at times. I liked it, and recommend it as a lighter offering. I have read some hefty themes lately and this was just right.

With Essie's last wish for Liv to finish her novel, made this an interesting read. Phaedra Patrick has a canny knack for writing real feel good stories. I have loved everyone of her books. Liv is quite a lonely but likeable character. This well written mystery has quite a unique plotline. We watch Liv blossom and her relationship with her husband and sons is not quite the same as they used to be. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I really hope you enjoy this story about author Essie Starling and her housekeeper Liv Green, and what happens when Liv is left a life-changing last wish to complete Essie’s final novel.

As a child, I grew up Oldham where going to the library was a treat for me, somewhere I could read and dream of becoming a writer one day. And I gave this same dream to my character Liv.

Personally, I write for many reasons – to show the boss who bullied me at work that I’m a better person, and also to make my family and friends proud. I write because words help to lift others up (more powerful than criticising and putting others down), and in memory of my cousin, a close friend and my grandparents who are sadly no longer here.

Many of us daydream about having a different career or even being a celebrity, so it was interesting to explore what happens when dreams come true and if they live up to reality. A key message from the book is to be happy in your own skin and to discover what’s really important to you. I wish you lots of happy reading.

Best wishes

Phaedra

This was a faultless book that I really enjoyed. It is one that will stay with me for a while and at the moment, is easily in my top five reads of the year.

Grabbed from the first page, I loved the premise of the story. Not only do we follow Liv’s evolution over the story from cleaner/dog’s body to secret writer, this novel is also about the mystery behind prolific recluse, Essie Starling. From the beginning, it is evident that Liv is not wholly satisfied with life. Trying to support her family, her cleaning jobs are not the fulfilment that Liv desires. Yet, money is tight with two sons at university and a husband’s family business that is financially struggling, Liv knows she must do what she can to hold these cleaning jobs, even if her clients are not always respectful and take advantage of her.

However, the unexpected death of Essie Starling presents a new start for Liv. Tasked with the mammoth job of completing Essie’s twentieth novel, Liv has to dig deep and find that writer’s inspiration that she once yearned for. Yet it is not just a case of writing a few more chapters, Liv knows that she needs to ‘live’ the novel: understand the writing process, Essie’s thoughts and to get inside the character. But, writing the next adventure of her literary heroine who has been with her throughout her life, Liv feels the pressure and realises that she needs to know more about her elusive boss, to discover what really inspired her in life.

Therefore, not only are readers taken on Liv’s writing journey, but we also learn more about Essie as a person. There are many questions surrounding this author enigma, especially as she has retired from the public eye a decade previous. Despite being such a best-selling author, no one knows anything about her; Liv makes it part of her mission to find these answers before evil journalist, Chloe, exposes everything.

Consequently, this book has many facades which added to my enjoyment. Throughout the novel we are treated to plenty of literature references, which I always love. Furthermore, I liked seeing Liv’s cleaning tips, particularly as she makes her own products, and the ice cube trick is one I have had to store for future reference! To be honest, these little gems within the story just made it all the more realistic and like Patrick was narrating directly to the reader.

With a poignant and haunting ending that brought a tear to my eye, this book had everything that I could have hoped for. It’s great for book lovers but also the genre makes it more than just a drama, aided by the mystery of Essie’s life. I could not have foreseen how the story would conclude and I liked that we are in the dark as much as Liv in this story. Fantastically written, this was a beautiful masterpiece and one that I highly recommend.

With thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Liv Green isn't necessarily living her best life. A 42-year-old married mum of two, she dreams of bigger things than cleaning other people's homes and ends up getting the perfect opportunity when her employer, best-selling author Essie Starling, disappears and leaves Liv with a task - finish writing her last book. But to write a story that is true to Essie, Liv and the thousands of fans who have followed character Georgia Rory for 20 books, Liv must dig deeper in the the elusive author's life.

I really like the concept of this book particularly as someone who dreams of being a writer one day but often can't find the time or motivation to pick up that pen. I also really appreciated that our main character Liv in this book is in her early forties and we are following someone with 20 years of marriage behind her, plus two almost grown children. I think with some cleaning up of parts of this story and a good script, this book could be turned into a really fun movie for Netflix (I don't want to say chick flick but more of a women-focused movie, you get me?). Unfortunately that might be where my appreciation for this story stops as I just didn't find it very good.

There was something about Liv and her life that rubbed me up the wrong way from the very start and from the first chapter, something soured in me about the entire book and I just had that feeling it might not be a good one for me and I was right. Liv and her husband have such an awful dynamic between them and it just was never very nice to read or be a part of, and even with her sons I also never found much connection there at all.

The character of Essie was very over the top, and there were a lot of things in this story about how Liv and Anthony could lie about Essie for so long, plus Liv write her manuscript that felt very unbelievable for me (like surely the publishers and editors should be in the loop, no?). The excerpts from the Essie Starling books as well starring character Georgia Rory were also terrible - please tell me how that reads like best seller material.

I read another review that likened this book to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and they are dead on. From Liv somehow needing to know about all of Essie's past romances to be able to write her characters, and then a bit of a silly twist at the end this is like the Poundland version of Evelyn Hugo.

This is a book that I read, and I'm glad it's over now to be honest. I would probably just recommend people read Evelyn Hugo instead or if you're a screenwriter adapt this for a movie as it would be so good.

Do you know what?
I really loved this book!
Like really enjoyed it!
Liv is a middle-aged cleaner, pootling along with life. Her children are leaving the nest, her husband is deep in his own work worries, and Liv is just about coping. with her books by her side to keep her going
Until one of her cleaning clients changes her life, completely.
Essie Starling is a reclusive best-selling author, and somehow, she opens up to her cleaner, in the strangest of ways, leaving Liv with a mission and a half to complete, upon her death,
Sure, maybe it is a bit far-fetched, to imagine the situation she is propelled into, but what a situation to find yourself, eh?
Liv ends up on a journey of self-discovery that she never thought she needed to go on, and, in the process, awakes a passion for words that she had left dormant for far too long.
So many twists within the story kept me going and I finished it far too quickly for my liking.
As I said before, loved it!
Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

‘’The Book Share’ is one of the sweetest stories that I have read in a long time. The main character Liv, works for her all-time favorite author Essie Starling. Essie is somewhat of a recluse and although Liv has a working relationship with her it is not until Essie’s sudden death that she realizes their bond was far stronger. The trust that Essie places in Liv is huge as she asks her to finish her last novel on her behalf.
I loved the feel-good and fuzzy feeling that this story left me with but there are so many little nods to eccentric writers and the characters are so well written and tangible, it makes for an unstoppable comfort read.
I really enjoyed the way that Liv grew throughout this book and how the relationships around her changed after she was given her opportunity from Essie. Patrick’s writing style is so observant for constructing multi-layered characters and believable family dynamics, which made this story so beautifully warm and gave a wonderful backdrop as Liv unravels the real mysteries of Essie Starling. Definitely an original and loveable story I enjoyed beginning to end.

Gostei do final, do último capítulo.

You never are quite sure what you are going to get with a Phaedra Patrick novel, other than they will take you on some sort of a journey.

And with The Book Share it really is a journey of self discovery for Liv, as she attempts to keep Essie's most recent biggest secret, while also learning more about her, and also discovering various other truths about Essie's life.

Over the course of six months, we see great character development for Liv, who really comes into her own as more than just a mother and wife. She really blossoms under the challenge she is undertaking and it gave me great joy to see.

And Essie, discovering all about her life was fascinating too, as well as seeing a bit more of behind the scenes of writing a book.

It was a joy to read this, I absolutely loved every second of it, especially once it got going and the intrigue around just whether Liv would succeed or not. And it definitely had me smiling by the end.

Thank you to HQ and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I really enjoyed reading this, I’ve never read a book with this kind of storyline before, it was really clever and unique. I was so drawn in to it and couldn’t stop turning the pages. It’s definitely one of those books which is great for book lovers, different book titles/authors mentioned throughout is something I loved. Stories based on characters that are authors is another thing I enjoy about a book.

Liv was on a mission throughout this story. From being a cleaner, trying to keep her family going with financial struggles to becoming a secret writer. I felt sorry for Liv at times as she was sometimes just treated like a doormat and taken advantage of. But becoming a secret writer to finish the novel, it really made her believe in herself and complete her mission.

An all round lovely book to read and one I recommend. It’s definitely ideal for a buddy read / book club read.

É raro um livro emocionar-me até às lágrimas, mas este conseguiu arrancar-me uma no canto do olho no final. 🥲

Recomendo

Being an avid reader myself, I liked Liv as soon as we meet her. She is hardworking and always on the go between her three cleaning jobs and looking after the family home with a husband and two teenage sons.

Like Liv, I found Essie quite daunting to start with. She is a no nonsense type of person who is very private about her personal life. I was eager to find out more about her and why she had been living as a recluse for so many years of which when she dies, Liv starts to find out more about the writer who she had worked for, for the last three years yet hardly knew anything about.

What I particularly loved about this story is Liv rediscovering herself. Am sure many of us have lost our way in life at times and Essie’s last wishes pushes Liv out of her comfort zone. I felt like a proud mum at times with Liv taking some big risks and how she handles the situations.

The Book Share was an emotional and uplifting read that had me totally hooked. I was really routing for Liv to come good in finishing Essie’s novel and I admired her determination. The storyline to do with Essie’s past made her more endearing and I couldn’t stop turning the pages although I was trying my hardest to take my time as I was enjoying the story so much that I didn’t want it to end. Phaedra Patrick is a new author to me and I can’t wait to read more of her books!

This was really enjoyable. It tells the story of book lover Liv Green who works as a cleaner for a big author Essie Starling . Essie is prickly but she obviously values Liv because she leaves her books to read and invites her for afternoon tea. Liv seems to be at a crossroads in her life and marriage but doesn’t really know what to do so she escapes into her books. So, when Essie dies, it hits Liv hard because they had just started to spark up a friendship.

Essie leaves Liv a last wish, part of which is to complete her final book (There’s another part to the wish but I don’t want to give any spoilers!) Liv has to step away from her books and into the real world to deliver Essie’s wish. She has great fun along the way and discovers more about Essie than she could ever imagine.

I think if you like Phaedra Patrick’s other novels and books like The Authenticity Project then you’ll like this one. Thanks to the publisher for the copy of the book.

What a wonderful, feel good book! I really enjoyed this story with its unusual premise, making it a fresh and unpredictable read. The characters are flawed, likeable and very real. I was totally invested in all of the characters stories - Liv - would she finish Essie’s book? Essie - what is the secret she was hiding, who was the love of her life and who DO those cufflinks belong to? Anthony - who was he to Essie? Jake - what is going on with him, his business, his sister? I devoured this book, wanting to find out what happens next and being surprised by the twists, turns and unexpected revelations. I loved it, and I’m pretty sure you will too……… highly recommended.

Urgh. I'm surprised that I read it to the end. I brought this book on a trip because it reminded me of Evelyn Hugo. It didn't surprise me there. It's sad how much the author has taken inspiration from other books (especially the ones mentioned in this book). The writing style is really good, but that's also the only compliment I can think of rn. I got big hate for a lot of the characters. Especially the husband and his sister. It irritated me that the main character did nothing to fight her problems. This is the first book that I truly dislike and rate 1 star.

Liv is working as a cleaner for her favourite author Essie but when Essie suddenly dies Liv is challenged to complete her final novel. Can Liv do it while pretending Essie is still alive? Juggling her husband, his failing family business, and two sons about to leave her for university can Liv really fulfill her lifelong ambition of becoming a writer?

An enjoyable tale held together by Liv's character.

Books About Books, Mystery, Romance

It's never too late to start a new chapter...

I totally agree with that sentiment. The Book Share takes us on the journey of a cleaning lady named Olivia Green, who is passionate about reading. The story begins with the unexpected death of a very popular author, Essie Starling. To Olivia's surprise, Essie leaves her with one final wish which is to complete her twentieth novel in a beloved series.

Although Olivia had once dreamt of becoming a writer herself, unfortunate circumstances within her family forced her to abandon that dream and keep it to herself.

The central question of the story is compelling: Why would a famous author entrust a cleaning lady with finishing her life's work?

I particularly loved the parts where Olivia struggles to find inspiration for the book's hero. Her search leads her to a very unexpected answer. I enjoy this kind of "jigsaw puzzle" storytelling, where each piece fits together to create a deeper narrative.

I truly enjoyed reading this book for several reasons:

The Genre: Books about books always fascinate me. There are many beautiful passages celebrating the power of reading. For example:

"The flat's white walls were lined with shelves populated with framed photographs and a rainbow of books."

"Books allowed you to tap into your imagination and conjure up your own pictures."

"She headed towards a bookshop and browsed all the novels to restore a little calm."

The Lessons: The story taught me valuable lessons about life:

Endurance: "There's no point guessing how a story will end, sweet pea. Keep turning the page until you reach the next chapter. Worrying never changes anything."
"The journey might be long, the terrain would certainly be rocky, but she told herself that wherever she went, there would always be flowers. She refused to be scared about whatever lay ahead."
"Don't let anyone stifle your spirit."
"If you meet something insurmountable, don't try and fight it. It will only leave you with bruises. The trick is to outsmart it and do something it wouldn’t expect."

Authenticity: "If stories didn't exist the way you wanted them, you had to create your own."

Independence: "Don't rely on him for your happiness. You have to find your own path, too."

Gratitude: "Success didn't feel very big when you had no one to share it with."

Encouragement for Writers: Although I’m not a writer, I believe authors would find inspiration in this book. Several phrases address the challenges of writing:

"No book is going to write itself... The first step is often the scariest. Find writers you enjoy, read their work, and learn from them. Write a sentence, write another one, and keep going. Perseverance is key. If I can do it, perhaps you can, too."

"Writing is like a life belt keeping me afloat right now, when everything else seems to be pulling me under. I don't want to dive and search around on the bottom of the seabed. I want to swim to a beautiful shore."

"Typing 'The End' was like the finishing line at the end of a marathon."

"Being a writer meant putting yourself inside different people's heads, imagining how they think and feel."

Finally, The Book Share is a captivating read with touching themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the magic of books. It’s a story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.

Liv Green is an avid reader, regularly losing herself in books to escape her mundane reality as a cleaner for people who either barely notice her or consistently take her for granted. However, she does have one job she enjoys- cleaner to her favourite author, Essie Starling.

Except, one day, Liv receives an unwelcome phone call. Essie has suddenly passed away and her will leaves Liv with an astonishing task: finish Essie's last ever novel. But Liv can't deny that as much as she wants to be a writer, it's a world away from her struggling family life. As she starts to write, she uncovers surprising connections that promise to spark great changes in her life.

Maybe it’s never too late to start a new chapter…

This is a story that recognises the endearing quality of books and their profound meaning and impact on readers. It's rather a love letter to readers and writers, and the bubble that is a good book that they share.

This is a nice story. Read it for that. But, reading critically, it's lacking.

The writing is simplistic, never giving the reader anything to become attached to so it lacks substance. This does make this story an easy read if a little unsatisfying.

The plot is prosaic; nothing bad, but also nothing new. Much of it reads like a YA mystery, the type that makes you roll your eyes at the unbelievable access the protagonist gets and gets away with, as opposed to adult contemporary fiction. Everyone tells Liv their deepest secrets with little to no prompting.

It doesn't lean enough into the tropes it's conveying, nor recognise that it's featuring something silly, like a coffee shop themed as a laundrette. This should be funny but Liv (and other characters) just gloss over it. Yes, this would be true for the character (especially one experiencing grief) but the book isn't for her, it's for the reader.

This style of book should be fun but, underneath that, be making serious points, such as relationship issues and money difficulties, whereas this book did the opposite. The consistent subterfuge was occasionally entertaining but hampered by its sheer awkwardness. Or it implements a literary tone, which would be gritty and the characters would be messy. This is too neat and convenient.

Also, it skips periods of days or hours in an awkward manner, which was jarring to read, especially as it's such a fast-paced novel. However, these flashbacks, memories and thoughts do help to provide context and character exploration.

On this point, the characters are fine but, overall, did little to establish themselves.
- Liv is a nice enough protagonist though seemed to lack all backbone to her, which seems like an outdated personality to use in this manner. Her relationship with Essie isn't established sufficiently before Essie's death so her thoughts on the writer just seem like she's whining rather than reminiscing.
- The solicitor, Anthony, seems ill-researched. He waits two months to share details of the will (already wrong), bypassing the fact that anyone mentioned in a will receives a copy of it. It is these -admittedly small- details that take the reader out of the story.
- Essie doesn't come across as a mysterious, captivating writer, just an unlikeable, aloof woman.

This certainly isn't a bad book and will be one that many enjoy, just one that did not work for me. I did like the twists and plot development in the last twenty per cent, however, so there was some benefit for me from pushing through to the end.

The book began gently, a sweet introduction to the main character, Olivia (Liv), and her day-to-day life and that of her family.
It is an enjoyable start but somewhat uneventful yet, as the story unfolds, you understand why Liv changes metaphorically and literally.
She swaps her mundane life and steps into the shoes of best-selling author Essie Starling, who happens to be Liv’s hero and idol.
A dream come true that turns out to be so much more.
Startling revelations, a determined journalist, and a complicated past, all take Liv on a journey she never expected.

Comparing books is never something I like to do, and this is no exception, but I will say that this story, especially the second half of the book, gave me The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo vibes. One reason is that the past holds the key to so many of the unanswered questions, but maybe you’ll see something else or might not even see it at all, but I’d love to know if anyone gets those vibes too.

I was sure this book would be a 3/4 star, but I can’t give it any less than 5!
Yes, the beginning is slower, but I was intrigued and happily went on this adventure with Liv.
I would ask questions only to answer them myself. I loved that, and that is because you get a real insight and sense of who Liv is and what drives her, helping you see things through her eyes, and so BAM! Question answered.
I love Liv and her message. I am 40 this year and have felt too old to change or believe in my dreams. Liv being 42 gives hope that age is just a number, and it is never too late. And before anyone says, It is fiction, I know, but if you connect with a story, character, or message, that is a powerful thing and can reignite a passion deep within that you may have forgotten.

Finally, the other characters we meet are just as wonderful in many unique ways. I can guarantee some you will adore, some you may dislike, and some will have you changing your opinions about them.

A thoroughly beautiful book. Full of love, loss, sadness, joy, heartbreak, and self-belief.
And let me say, several times towards to end, my eyes misted over, and tears caressed my cheeks. A very tender and touching final few chapters.

Thank you, @NetGalley and HQ, for the arc of the ebook in return for my honest review.

This book is a love song to readers. How authors can forever change our lives with the stories they tell. It’s ironic that the first real author to be mentioned is the one that did that for me Stephen King. I really don’t want to imagine a time when there are no more of his books being released but that is exactly what happens to Liv after her favourite author dies. No more Georgia Rory adventures, except maybe the unfinished manuscript that Essie caught her reading. The one that her solicitor has just informed Liv that she is to finish, as requested by Essie shortly before her death.

Then there is the enigma that was Essie and the mystery behind her becoming a recluse for the last decade after vanishing on the eve of an awards party. There is nothing as compelling as trying to work out a mystery on someone who creates plots themselves. Take the disappearance of Agatha Christie herself for example and the author here has cleverly combined books within a book.

I loved Liv she is like so many women/mums out there, the invisible glue that holds the pages of a family together. Doing whatever it takes to support them even putting her own needs and dreams to one side. She is taken for granted by the people she cleans for and is treated more like a dogsbody and babysitter. Will this be the chance for the cleaner to finally shine herself?

I have always held authors to rockstar status and my admiration for their work is why I started blogging. This was such a wonderful story with characters that came alive on the pages and a protagonist that I could really resonate with. I think every reader will feel this book was written just for them, I know I did.

I would like to thank Netgalley, HQ and Phaedra Patrick for the E ARC copy of this book. This book is published on the 31st March 2022.
We meet Liv who is a cleaner for Essie, a famous author and the author of Liv’s favourite character and series. They get along well but one day Liv finds the manuscript for the next book, unable to resist she reads the first chapters and is caught by Essie. Essie asks her what she thinks and Liv tells her, once Essie considers things, she asks Liv to help her, once she comes back from her break.
Liv gets a phone call from Essie’s’ lawyer two days later and is told that Essie has died. However, she has been left something in the will and Essie has asked her to finish the book. Liv is astonished but agrees. The story then follows Liv as she starts the writing process and all she does to make the final book the best yet. We see her grow and her relationship with her husband and sons change. She begins to realise what she wants and what is important to her.
I liked the writing style and the characters in this book. I was kept engaged although there were a couple of things that happened that I was not in agreement with, it did not detract from my enjoyment of this book.

I love Phaedra Patrick. She writes wonderful, uplifting reads that take you away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Her characters are engaging and hugely likeable and all this she continues to deliver with The Book Share. Light hearted but with a great deal of heart this was a lovely book to disappear into for a while. I have to say that I did try to second guess what was gong to happen and I am delighted to say that I didn’t get there. What I did get was a story that made me care bout Liv, Essie and reminded me that my own hopes and dreams are just as important and that it is never to late to follow them. Liv finds the courage to find her own way and that is something we all aspire to do. Another lovely read from the author of The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper and The Secrets of Sunshine.

4.5 stars for this one.

Liv is a character I can definitely relate to. A woman who loves losing herself in a good book and dreams of becoming an author herself. When she’s given the opportunity to follow that dream, she can’t quite believe it or understand why she was chosen.

A compelling story about chasing your dreams and following your heart. Watching Liv grow into the person she wants to be was a delight. I felt every emotion along with her, and was fully invested in her unraveling the search for the perfect love interest for the character she was writing.
There was also a nice wee twist that I didn’t see coming. I love when a book can still surprise me.

Definitely worth a read. Full of hope and heart.

This was all just a bit too twee - the nice people were nice, the nasty people were nasty, except those who got a redemption arc, and the main character found herself. Oh, and writers work really hard, just in case you didn't realise.

A nice pleasant and surprising read. Interesting and unusual characters. Liked the concept just expected a bit more going on in the middle.
