Making a Killing

Rate this book
Natalia was raised to believe that she was too odd for societal acceptance. With the death of her cruel and controlling mother, she seeks out her only remaining relative. She is determined to show her long-lost half-brother, and everyone else, that she is perfectly normal . But, when she meets a prominent businessman with an irresistible proposition, she can no longer hide her true nature. Adopting his mantra, “You Do You,” Natalia realizes she doesn't have to mask her true colors. He accepts her for the quirky, badass assassin she is. If only her brother could do the same. Knowing she can have everything if she stops at nothing, Natalia discovers, one natural-looking death at a time, that making a killing is easier than fitting in.

Not bad.

Making a Killing is well written. I would classify it as a thriller. This book wasn't a drag to read, which is a good thing, but I wouldn't say that I was entertained by it. What drew me to it was the book cover, the title, and the blurb.

While the profanity isn't overbearing, it is in there (which I wish it weren't). It would have been helpful to see a subtitle on the book cover. I did not enjoy the parts in the story that included graphic details about using the bathroom. Daniel was too foolish for my tastes, and I cannot figure out why Natalia's mother didn't hand her over to the authorities when she was young. I did not like how the story shifted to the past when I was over 50% into this book.

The word "schmooze" was out of place, as well as another quote that I found in this book.

I gave this book a three-star rating because it was well written and plotted. I would consider reading another book by Cori Nevruz, but I would not reread Making a Killing. To get a five-star rating, I would leave out some of the graphic details about characters using the bathroom, exclude the profanity, and not include so much information about the past, chiefly after the 50% mark.

I was honored to be chosen to read this book in advance and I really loved it.

Natalia is a young woman who has been hidden away and abused by her mother for years. Her mother has told her her whole life that she is ugly, disfigured and not normal. After her cruel mother passes she decided to seek out her half-brother, Daniel, and try to be begin her life as a "normal" person. The thing is, she's not really normal. In fact, she's a psychopath. Her brother is not like her. He had a normal upbringing and would not understand her inclination towards killing. Daniel takes her in and after he is rejected by his business idol, Stuart, Natalia takes his future into her own hands. She strikes a deal with the prominent business man where in Daniel will get the job he wants and she will use her skills as an assassin to take out the people draining the business finances. Before too long, Daniel starts to suspect something is awry with his sister. Stuart and Natalia start to believe their sinister deceptions will soon be found out by Daniel.

I wont share much more as I don't want to spoil it. This book was fantastic. The writing is superb. The characters are intriguing and well written. The pacing is perfect, I was able to read this in one day. I ended up liking Natalia even though she's not really a very moral person. The ending had a huge twist that I did not see coming. I highly recommend this book and I am excited to see more from this author.

If you are looking for a quick read with a twist, this one is for you.

Mentally abused by her mom for years, Natalia became aggressive and unstable after her mother's death. Suffering from a chronic mental disorder with abnormal and sometimes violent social behaviour, Natalia has a natural inclination towards killing.

Working as a work-for-hire assassin to fulfill her killing needs, Natalia is leading quite a successful life, but only until her brother starts feeling that something is wrong.

If you are looking for a quick read with a twist, this one is for you. Just like Cori Nevruz's first book, Dirty Laundry, this thriller exceeded my expectations.

Because Goodreads doesn't know half stars, this book ends up with 4 on here. I originally gave it 3.5.

Believe it or not, it took me some time (nearly till halfway in the book) that I realized the word game in the title 🫣.
I liked the book as a whole. Let me start with that. To add directly, that I didn't like the characters. Not a single bit. Usually that means that I also dislike the book, but much to my surprise that wasn't the case with this book.
Natalia - she is not a bit strange, she's a serial killer. I don't mind characters like that, but there's something cold about her. A lack of empathy, sympathy, not sure how to describe it, but to me it makes her unlikable.
Daniel - a grown man without a backbone. Or so it seems. He's got a good set of brains and uses them well, too well apparently, because they get him in trouble. And he decides to follow his moral compass and stand up against the things he discovered that go against the rules.
Stuart - a cunning man, who only thinks of making profit. He doesn't care one bit how, as long as the result is more profit for his company.

These three characters carry the book and it's unusual plot. And it's the latter that made me like the book, despite the characters.
As far as I can recall, I've never read anything like this before. And I've read a few books.
It's a pity I can't tell you very much about the plot, because it would mean that I spoil the fun for other readers. But I truly hope that no CEO in his right mind would ever consider going the path that was described in this book.

The ending was predictable, untill I got to the very last part of the book.
A nice read, that makes me consider reading more books by this author.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author herself. I’ll start by saying I enjoyed this thriller and the unfolding storyline.

Natalia is a peculiar woman who is living a double life. Her recently discovered half-brother sees one version of her, and her employers see a whole other side. A side that she keeps hidden, pushed back from those who may judge her too harshly. But what happens when those two sides begin to become too much to juggle?

Natalia and Daniel’s relationship as half-siblings is put through the wringer up until the very end of the book. Is he just looking out for her? Does he even care about her at all? And most importantly, what does he know? Because Daniel knows something …. Natalia just isn’t completely sure of how much he knows. Everything comes to a head in the final few chapters of the book, with a twist I honestly didn’t see coming in the final two pages.

Basically, this is the story of an odd young woman who has had an awful life, trying to cope with her upbringing while attempting to create something great with her new brother. But her early life has given her lasting scars and that damage seeps into everything she experiences. Her new brother, her new bosses, her new friends… All of these newfound experiences overwhelm her and, with a few twists, everything seems to come undone.

And then what happens if the peculiar girl goes too far? I guess you have to read to find out!

Overall, I very much enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the writing style. I finished reading in under a day and stayed up late to find out the ending - which could potentially leave room for a sequel.

Thank you so much to the author for the advance copy!

This was so twisted and dark. I wanted to like Natalia, but she was just so vile and broken without redemption of any kind. This story made me furious, but I was happy to see some corruption come to light over all this killing. There is no justice in this

story, and the killers just run wild and free!!!

Not my cuppa. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

Great suspense and easy to read. I loved how Cori was able to make such a troubled, intriguing character likable and made you want to root for her. Enjoyed this book and was sad when it was over! Will definitely recommend.

Brilliant, complex, edgy…a thriller through and through. The colorful characters and the high stakes plot are full steam ahead the whole time. The bottom line—read it. You won’t be sorry and you won’t be able to put it down.

This book promises a thrilling and darkly humorous ride, and I am here for it! Natalia’s journey—from suppressing her true self to embracing her quirks (and deadly skills)—sounds both gripping and wickedly entertaining. The blend of psychological depth, family drama, and high-stakes action makes for a unique take on the assassin trope.

The dynamic between Natalia and her long-lost brother intrigues me just as much as her alliance with the enigmatic businessman. The tagline "making a killing is easier than fitting in" perfectly encapsulates the sharp wit and moral complexity this story seems to offer. If you love fierce, unconventional protagonists and a plot that challenges societal norms while delivering killer twists, this sounds like a must-read!
