Flight 171

Rate this book
Devon Marsh is haunted by secrets. Like the identity of the person who killed her twin sister, Emily, in a hit and run accident last Halloween, which Devon has vowed to uncover. Like the things Devon said to Emily just before she died.

But she’s determined to start fresh when she boards a four-hour flight along with her classmates for their senior class ski trip. Devon never could have guessed those secrets would surface in the most terrifying way when a supernatural creature hijacks their flight and gives the students a deadly ultimatum:

Choose one among them to sacrifice before the end of the flight. Or the plane will crash.

As the clock ticks down, the creature slowly unearths the passengers’ deepest, darkest secrets—and reveals that one of the teens on the plane is responsible for Emily’s death. The students must agree on a sacrifice, or there won’t be any survivors. But can Devon find a way to stop the creature, or will she give in to her anger and let revenge take control?

I can’t even! I started out not knowing if I wanted to read this, because I’m always a nervous wreck when I step onto a plane. But I was ASSURED that this would be YA Horror and not the kind of Horror that would haunt me until the sun comes up.

Flight 171 gave me all those vibes of Final Destination without the constant death and destruction that went along with it. Now, don’t get me wrong, there is death. There is destruction, it just isn’t constant. And I loved it!

Devon is wracked with guilt after the hit & run death of her twin sister, Emily. We don’t know why she feels guilty, only that her sister died on Halloween and she feels that she had a hand in that death… along with someone else who’s there on the school trip with her. And some THING who’s hijacked the flight. They don’t know what it is, but it plans to go expose all of their secrets until they chose one of them to sacrifice.

This was a great spooky read to prepare me for the season. I’m definitely wanting more now and they can only get scarier from here, please! 😍

I will say, I NEVER saw that ending coming… I love it when a book keeps me guessing until the very end. 🤯🤯🤯

I’m glad it’s over. This made me feel like I wandered over to Wattpad instead of my Kindle app. It was an interesting premise, I had my fingers crossed for something like Final Destination, but I hated the main character and there were quite a few plot holes. I will admit that I liked the last chapter and its ambiguous ending, my favorite type in horror, but you couldn’t pay me to read a sequel if there was one.

A group of seniors board a red eye to Denver and encounter an evil presence set on exposing everyone’s darkest secrets.

• 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓

Devon and her friends are boarding Flight 171, a red eye, to Denver for their senior class trip. Devon’s twin, Emily, died 6 months earlier in a hit and run. Obsessed with finding her killer, and blaming herself for Emily’s death, these thoughts plague her as she boards the plane. As the plane taxis and leaves the ground, Devon can’t help but sense something is deeply wrong. And when a freak murder happens just 10 minutes in, Devon and her friends will come face to face with an old and evil presence, set on exposing secrets and possessing one of their bodies before the flight lands in just 4 hours.

• 𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒

I was immediately enthralled with this YA novel! The setting was just right (aboard a plane with an evil presence you can’t escape?!) and I loved the premise. Devon has been trying and failing to discover who killed her sister, and tonight she’ll finally find those answers. This would be great as a movie (🤞🏻). The ending was a fun twist, too (but not totally unexpected). This is a great pick for young horror fans!

i'm honestly so glad that this is over..
this book felt more like a wattpad story than anything. the writing was shallow and barely hooked me into the plot. the storyline had so much potential but alas, it wasn't executed well and so i didn't enjoy it.
the focus was only on those few 'main' students, with everyone else neglected in a way. the main few, however, didn't even get unique characters. they're all stereotypical students with no personalities or uniqueness to them. devon is not someone i would choose as the main character/narrator of the story, she lowkey annoyed me by the time i was 30% in the book. the attempt at making her personality stand out caused me to hate her character 😓
the story dragged on for wayyyy too long and there were so many parts i was thinking "well, couldn't they have just done this????" in a super exasperated manner.

only reason i persevered through was for my reading challenges 🥲

I hope this doesn't get shadowbanned, that will not be appreciated :/

I don't get this books high ratings, especially since most are from middle-aged adults. I'm a kid and I know better. Some others that rated this knew better.

Also, I understand this is chaotic. I just needed to get it all out there. (*Spoilers*)

This had the most interesting premise, and it was put repeatedly on hold. So I had to check it out. Like, you can't read that summary and not think so. It had every sign to be good, but it unfortunately didn’t live up to it. Like, at all. First of all, there are so many kids on the plane, but they only focus on the “main'' ones. It would be fine if it was done well, y’know, get some description of them here and there, reactions, deaths, etc., but it was so unnatural that it took me out of the story. Did I mention that these “special” kids are literally so special that I can’t even tell them apart? Oh, and that they have no personality that their dialogue and interactions have to rely on cliche stereotypes? I thought the supernatural being would be an actual, badass otherworldly creature. Whatever the hell we got is deffo not this.

Me: I want a cool supernatural creature
Mom: We have a cool supernatural creature at home

The supernatural creature at home:

(pstt it's a grandma)

This sounds like something a middle schooler would write--actually, no. A middle schooler could do better than this.

Right off the bat we know that Devon has been dressing in Emily’s clothes in the hopes that she’d somehow become her, filling the void Emily left behind and give her friends closure (which she didn’t get along with btw), while also using it as a coping mechanism to make her feel like Emily’s with her. This fact doesn’t sit well with me because it doesn’t make sense. The book makes it clear that they were nothing alike. Emily was the goody-two shoes, popular, girly. Devon was the sneaky, rock-star, not like other girls type. They had nothing alike, and didn’t get along either. Emily wanted to do good by her sister, but Devon never listened to her. But now decides to be all sad and wear Emily’s clothes? Make that make sense. The main girl always has to have a suspicion, Jack was it in this case, the guy she had a thing with, although there was never any proper evidence. It was him because…it was just him? Spoiler alert: It wasn’t him, and the whole time acted like Devon’s savior, trying to comfort her, protect her, hold her back (you get the picture). Devon’s character is the embodiment of self-pity and it got super annoying really fast. I guessed the killer from the very first chapter. The nonchalant, hot-shot, mysterious boy who writes in a leather journal and the boyfriend of Kiara (Emily’s bff). The main character should be figuring out multiple things, the story shouldn’t be so straight-line. The old lady showed three “sinful” events from three diff. students. It went from putting the charity box in a locker to frame someone, to actual battery (guy beating wrestling athlete w/ a bat bc they bullied them, and ruined their future in wrestling), to a replay of Emily getting struck (which was unironically comical), and Devon and Emily’s last interaction (Devon took keys and drove home, leaving Emily to walk home in the cold) and said she hoped she froze to death. Boo-hoo, literally the most unoriginal thing. This convo takes place in so many teen movies it's unreal.

The journal itself discredited all the events that had happened, and makes the reader think: what’s the point? What’s worse, Andrew admits to the murder by writing it down. No person in the world—not even the dumbest criminal ever would do this and keep the page. His demeanor, the fact that he is Kiara’s Bf, Emily’s bff, led me to believe that yeah, this guy bc the dynamic in itself could cause a series of conflicts when the endgame came, and it would be intense (this did not happen; I will explain soon). When Devon noted “book” in the front seat, that only reinstated my belief. Who’s the only one that carries a book-like object around 24/7? Andrew. The fact that nobody came to this conclusion is sending me. He’s popular. People would know what it looks like. Also, we never hear from him again, only Kiara’s reactions. Clearly he served no other purpose but to be the “killer.” Nobody ever questioned the whereabouts of the rest of the kids, and the only one they did after seeing her shoes in the shot of Emily’s dead body lying on the road (which people have no emotion at witnessing) was actually her secret girlfriend. Even more outrageous, she freaked out, called the cops, and hid in the woods and waited for them to come bc she couldn’t stand leaving her alone. Wtf. This isn’t normal behavior. What was the point in showing 3 videos? Clearly no purpose. The first one wasn’t even sinful, and everyone went apeshit for it. The second was bad. And the third, Devon, wasn’t bad either. Normal sibling crap. Movie type crap. Literally had nothing to do with one another. When Devon noticed Andrew and Kiara went missing and took the gun, I realized then nothing would happen, as she would magically talk them down after hitting Kiara upside the head and easily got the gun away from Andrew. He literally resigned so fast.

Realistically, nobody would do that, especially after he was described as such a non-affected guy. When the voting came to choose who was sacrificed, Rebecca (girl that looked on in lust at Andrew and put charity money in Kiara’s locker) said something along the lines of “You put everyone on the plane in danger.”...How? People started choosing Devon instead of Andrew… bro. And he was like, no, choose me, I had all the time to do the right thing, it’s my fault… heh? Also, aren’t icepicks on planes really small? How did that knock Kiara unconscious? The sister coming back as a ghost came off as childish and novice. The only purpose she served was to move the plot, to make Devon come to a conclusion she wouldn’t otherwise make. She was very convenient. The last scene where Emily and that kid who died (he’s so forgettable I forgot his name) and waved to her from the plane window was the last straw. I laughed out loud. There was literally no point in his death. He was another guy who was introduced at the beginning, and was brought back just for this scene. The fact that a dumbass, frankly stereotypical, teenage group is going to keep quiet about this--that they are not even traumatized is like…what? Devon’s mom literally did not question anything, and no adults, about the literal chaos and blood bath inside the plane. No ambulance tended to the people whose teeth got knocked, bruised pretty bad, and other inexplicable injuries. Honestly, this whole thing reeks of privileged white people problems. This was an 8 hour, rambling fever dream.

Would I recommend? No. Save yourself.

Trigger warnings: death of a sibling (in the past), car accident (in the past), plane crash, body horror, blood, gore, lying, demonic possession

The second I read the blurb, it felt like a mash up of Final Destination and season 1 episode 4 of Supernatural. And, like, yes. That's pretty much exactly what it felt like. And I wasn't mad about it, but I also kept waiting for it to do something different to either of those things - especially when Final Destination was name dropped in the course of the story. But it just...didn't. So it was fun and I had a good time reading it! But I strongly suspect it will prove to be extremely forgettable in the long run.

I wanted to read this because growing up I really enjoyed the movie Final Destination and the synopsis of this one reminded me of that movie. I also never fly so I knew reading this would not make me too scared. I first want to say I would never board a plane with any of those kids! Oh my gosh, they all brought so much bad luck to that flight and I would have been miserable if I was forced to listen to what they were discussing.

I thought this was a good YA thriller and will do well with teens. It might take a chapter or two to really feel invested but stick with it because it was definitely worth it. Once you get hooked you will want to speed read to the end. At about 25% the pacing starts steadily increasing and does well until the end. I loved how the author handled all of the different aspects included in this book. Some might feel like it was too much but I thought it fit the story and the way it was written was well done. There was a nice mix of characters and some if not all are your typical teens. Overall, I would definitely recommend this one. It was a quick read that held my interest the whole way through and kept me engaged. I am definitely going to purchase this for my library and I think the teens will really enjoy it.

Thank you so much @getunderlined & @randhousechildrens for the gifted copy on Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC of this book via TBR and Beyond Tours in exchange for an honest review!

Flight 171 is a horror story about a senior class on its way to a sky resort, when the plane is taken over by a supernatural being who needs a new body. It is up to the class to pick a sacrifice among them for this.

“I am done trying to be a hero.”

I have been aiming to only read horror and/or spooky reads for October this year, and this story is a perfect way to start the month with! It is creepy, eerie, haunting and perfect for the spooky season!

The story starts off with the class at the airport about to board to place that will bring them to the resort. From the get-go the mysterious feeling is present, and it helps getting into the story a lot. You immediately notice some hostility and weird vibes between classmates and the big question of what happened on Halloween is also one that keeps popping up.

The way the feeling of being haunted and something being wrong is really a great way to start this read. I loved immediately getting that feeling and wanting to know what would happen. I kept reading the book while dark, in the evenings, to help along with the feelings haha.

The characters are quite different from each other, and you know all of them have something to hide. The way they all reacted when the woman made herself known and it really kicked-off showed that. I liked Devon a lot, but her trying to be more like her sister seemed like a struggle for her. Towards the end, when she is just herself and not pretending to be more like Emily, I liked her more. She was more authentic then. I couldn’t really get a good grasp on the other characters to be honest. I liked them and they were needed for the story, but somehow, they didn’t seem as well developed as Devon was.

Knowing it was partially supernatural really helped the story along. It gave it another dimension and not just a hijacking of the plane or something. It also made it very interesting, and I wanted to learn all the secrets. It made me really invested haha. The ending/solution did seem a bit straight forward and there are still somethings that I don’t understand. They seem a bit like plot holes, to be honest. I did love the very last few pages, as it really gave me an idea that the story isn’t over. A sort of eerie and ominous ending haha.

Overall, it was a good supernatural horror story with an overall eerie and creepy feel to it!

Flight 171 is a YA horror that takes place on a plane. It's told from Devon's point of view. She has lost her twin sister in a car accident and is determined to find out who ran her over. An evil presence on the plane will force Devon and all of her classmates to reveal secrets before time runs out and the plane goes down. Devon hopes the killer will be revealed.

I'm a bit wishy-washy on this one. I liked the level that the horror and gore reached for a YA. It was just just enough to make my skin crawl, but wasn't over the top. There is a lot of body horror in this book, so keep that in mind. I also wasn't sure who the killer was until the end.

What I didn't love were the characters. They were all self absorbed and narcissistic teens. If I was Devon, I'm not sure I could stand to be around them for a few minutes, never mind a 4 hour plane ride. Despite that, I do think this is worth giving a try. It would translate well into a guilty pleasure horror movie.

My Top 5 Reasons to Read Flight 171

1. Perfect book for October

2. The writing is so good! It’s as if I’m watching a scary movie! It’s an insatiable and hard to put down story.

3. It’s like watching a fast moving horror film about possession and demons. An old lady wants to possess a young new body?!

4. The suspense! Willingly choose a classmate to sacrifice within three hours or everyone on the plane dies?!🫣

5. Read this if you enjoy horror movies like Final Destination, Insidious, the Exorcist, Blair Witch Project

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this amazing YA horror novel!

This was so stressful! Already being nervous to fly and then adding a horror element to it made it even more terrifying. The author definitely pulled this one off!

I liked the mystery surrounding who killed Devon’s sister. It’s interesting to see how everything played out and how certain characters were ready to throw others under the bus for their own gain.

This was a crazy ass book. Wasn't expected to get grossed out but God the way the author described the creepy old lady and the one scene(I don't get grossed out easy but there is one thing that will send me over the edge and that is mucus) just GAAAHHHH.

It has been a while since I've written a review. I had to read this book for my master's. I predicted the murderer from the beginning. I'm honestly upset that I figured it out so quickly. I feel like I was reading Wattpad story. I liked the horror references but I felt cringy sometimes with it. It was like the author was using that to describe than actually deeply describing the scene. It also depended if the reader watched those movies and knew it. Some of them I haven't seen so I was lost some of the times. I just felt like this has been done a lot of times and the tropes were really obvious. Maybe it's because I read a lot of horror and watched a ton of horror movies, but I got bored. It was a little entertaining reading the secrets but I feel like we just skipped to the final video. Anyway if you want an easy stepping stone into horror, I would recommend this. But it just wasn't for me.

It's a nice refresher book but every single person in this books was whiny and annoying. All of them were suckish people and they all deserved to die except Emily. Also we never got to find out Carter's sin and I thought he killed Emily, and carter was mentioned like twice before he died so his death wasn't very impactful. Rebecca deserved to get hit by a bus. I love how she traded her soul at the end but it made no sense for her to do it because its like she was dying anyways. It would have made more sense for Carter to have done it because he wanted to save Devon. I hate how they kept calling her old woman because it appeared every five words. It was a great touch about how she was going to kill them all anyways though.

This had such great promise but didn’t quite deliver. The story started out well, with everyone getting on the plane, and Devon describing the issues she’s facing, but the starts to go downhill and ends up being overly gory with no real story. None of the characters were likeable and I quickly lost interest. I was so looking forward to this story but this was a DNF.

Okay… I’m not a big fan of flying and now I can assure you I will never sit on a plane next to an older lady with knitting needles!

Devon Marsh and her classmates board a plane for what should be a fantastic ski trip - their senior trip. But there is something evil on the plane, requiring a sacrifice, a new host, or the plane is going down.

It seems pretty straightforward, right? But as the classmates try to overtake this… creature, while trapped at 35,000 feet in the air, it somehow has the ability to reveal the students’ darkest secrets to everyone. And some secrets are worth wanting others to pay - even with their lives!

I don’t read a lot of horror, but I have to admit this was very entertaining, although a tad bit gory. As this creature messed with their heads and pitted them against one another, it was interesting to see how their true characters came out in the face of adversity.

Thank you @Amychristinepar for this gifted book and goodies. And thanks @ohyouread for the tour invite!

I had no idea just how weird this would be. A lot of reviews said this was kind of a crossover between Final Destination and an episode of Supernatural. I've never seen either of those, so I can't confirm, but this wasn't bad. It felt very science fiction like, so I did hesitate to pick it up at first, but I'm glad I did. It wasn't anything exceptional, but there was some suspense.

What an odd little book! It was really creepy and quite gross in spots. (I might never look at knitting needles the same way again.)

However, the main character Devon was not remotely likable (none of the characters were really) and the story was quite convoluted.

Overall not a favorite.

I liked this book, it was more of a mild horror kinda thriller. The old lady omg I will never look at ild people the same way. I liked Devon, because she was relatable. She made mistakes she had her secrets, but she still tried to dp the right thing. I didn't expect the ending. Even when I was listing all of the possibilities of who killed Emily for some reason I didn't even think of that person. I like that Devon forgave herself and that Emily did too. I hate Rebecca and think she should go to jail for being stupid and annoying and naive (I know you can't go to jail but let me dream)
The ending was really good, but now I think I will wait awhile till I get on a plane.

I LOVE thriller and suspense books. Like, love, love, LOVE them. I LIVE for them.
Oh, I forgot to say - when they're actually written well.
This book, with its photoshopped cover and not-at-all-threatening name (like, Flight 171? 𝘙𝘌𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘠? at least do something like Flight 13 or 666 - Flight 171 sounds like a fun trip to Paris), was written by someone who just really wanted to write a 'scary' rip-off of Thirteen Reasons Why and not think about the plot, characters, development, or the fact a demon-possessed old lady looking for a new body wouldn't actually force people to kill someone, just kill someone herself instead. Y'know, if demon-possessed old ladies were actually a thing. Yeah, I GET that it's supposed to be fiction, but at least make it SOME degree of believable?! A ghost would have made much more sense here!
Ahem. Moving on.
The plot is what I am going to dissect next. I like the whole 'spilling secrets' thing, but it was pulled off so terribly I couldn't help but hate it in this context. And it was timed so weirdly - one minute we were getting a secret from a cheating girlfriend, the next we were getting one from a car crash instigator - it was so random! I would have maybe moved this up 1 star if they were related somehow.
Next, our main character. Sweet, pathetic little Devon. Like, I get you're devastated that your sister died, but seriously? I won't spoil anything, but THAT level of insanity over something YOU pretty much did? Just stop already, it's cringy. And who wouldn't listen if their DEAD SISTER started trying to tell you not to do something? Anyone? No? That's what I thought.
Anyway. I know I gave it 2 stars, which is more than 1, but I still would not recommend this to my worst enemy. Yeah. It's THAT BAD.
