The twelfth book in the series and the content is maybe getting a little repetitive.

I was happy to start the book and find that Gemma and Cassie were going to a castle in the Scottish Highlands - a holiday for Gemma and a painting class for Cassie. This should have freshened things up a bit but sadly the author chose to move the whole gang from Oxford to Scotland, including the Old Biddies, Devlin and even Muesli! I kept expecting Gemma's parents to pop up any minute but luckily they had the sense to stay home.

Of course there is a murder at the castle and Gemma tries to solve it but makes a complete mess of the whole thing. Someone needs to explain to her that even nice, good looking, friendly people can still be murderers. The same someone could buy her a collar and lead for Muesli.

Nevertheless I still enjoyed the story and I will be ready for the next book when it comes out, especially since I need resolution over the Devlin situation!

My Thoughts /

rounded to 3.5 stars

As I tick off A High Whisk Situation, the twelfth book in the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries series, I'm now up to date. And while I've really enjoyed this series, even this avid reader thought the overall content was getting a little commonplace.

At the start of the story we learn that Gemma Rose is faced with the reality that she was going to have to close the Little Stables as the Tearoom's plumbing finally gave up the ghost; with the plumber saying he'd need at least a week to finish the job.

Cassie is off to Aberglinn Castle Hotel in Scotland where she has been hired to run painting classes for the guests and talks Gemma into tagging along. Since the Tearoom had to be shut down anyway, there's really no reason to stick around Oxford.

The Castle is in the middle of the picturesque Scottish Highlands and sure enough soon our protagonist is up to her head in heather, haggis and homicide.

The change of scenery from Oxford to Scotland was nice. The narrative had a slightly locked room mystery theme about it, when the victim, hotel manager Aileen Fergusson was found dead in her office. Although there was little in the way of clues, there were an abundance of suspects, for Miss Fergusson was a surly woman who ran the castle with an iron fist and a disapproving tone.

Although the scenery was different, all the regular characters remained, with Cassie, all four of the Old Biddies, Devlin and Muesli all showing up in Scotland.

I felt the mystery element was a bit strained and not up to the author's usual standard for this series. The characters, Scottish myth, folklore and food saved this one from being a total bust.

a trip to the highlands....

Gemma finally takes a break when the loos' plumbing needs an over haul and joins Cassie at an incredible luxury castle where she is teaching a painting course for a few days. Muesli goes with the the old Biddies and Gemma and Devlin are on "a break" so it's a well deserved bit of time off. The people at the castle are a mixed bag and just when it seems like it's gonna be a nice holiday. Someone gives up the ghost!

A vacation in Scotland is interrupted by murder and, of course, English tearoom owner, Gemma tries to help the local detectives solve the case.

The setting is a beautiful castle hotel in the breathtaking Scottish countryside.

She’s there as a guest of her best friend Cassie who’s leading a painting workshop at a castle hotel while her tearoom is closed for plumbing repairs. When Gemma goes looking for her lost cell phone late at night, she finds the manager of the castle hotel dead in the library. She’s been garroted.

Because no one on staff at the hotel seemed to like the dead woman and she was seen arguing with several people, there are quite a few suspects. After the detectives question the guests and staff and leave, Gemma decides to talk to them all too to see what she can find out and maybe find the murderer, like she has in several other cases back home in England.

The detective boyfriend Devlin she’s on a break from also turns up in Scotland on a training exercise and helps her out.

Her four old lady English snoop friends whose cousin lives nearby show up too and bring her cat that they’ve been watching.

To find out if she and her friends find the killer and if so, who he or she turns out to be, you’ll need to read this clever mystery.

As you might guess from the whimsical punning title, A High Whisk Situation is a lighthearted cozy mystery. There's a little humor, a little romance and a well plotted mystery taking place in a beautifully described, picturesque setting in Highland Scotland.

Although this book is part of an established series, which might be more enjoyable read as such, it does work as a standalone novel. There is sufficient retrospective context given to flesh out established relationships. The storyline holds enough complexity to carry the character sketches.

I most enjoyed the descriptive setting and ensemble of characters. There were several believable misdirects, so as a reader I didn't feel I was sure of the culprit too early in the story.

If a lighthearted cozy is your cup of tea, you'll enjoy this whodunit trip to the Highlands.

A High Whisk Situation Earns 5+/5 Scottish Kilts … Clever & Engaging Cozy Gem!

What’s worse than a broken sewer system in a centuries old building? Nothing. But, for Gemma and her BFF Cassie it means … ROAD TRIP! Mabel Cooke, the main “Old Biddie” and a friend, however overbearing, of Gemma and Cassie, politely pressured her friend and owner of the Aberglinn Castle Hotel to offer a painting workshop to guests and hire Cassie as the artist-in-residence. Since the tearoom would be shutdown for repairs, there’s little reason to stick around. The two girls, then, head off to the Highlands. Totally worth it when they meet Ewan Campbell … Mr. Highlander!

The hotel is a beautiful castle in the middle of the picturesque highlands. Cassie is excited about teaching watercolor classes while Gemma contemplates a rustic ghille adventure with Ewan Campbell. But, Gemma spies a few cracks in the posh surroundings starting with a most disagreeable hotel manager, Aileen Fergusson, who seems to manage the staff with an demanding tone and disapproves of the two staying in one of the guest rooms when they are hired help. She also has an argument over money with American Jerry Hudson, a bit of a Texas cliché, and when two unruly children cause a ruckus during a pre-dinner gathering, she “loudly” sets them straight to the horror of their wealthy parents. When they demand she be fired, the owner is oddly reluctant to comply. So, when Gemma finds Aileen dead in the library by garrote, the eclectic crowd of guests and staff become suspects.

What do you do after taking a lifelong dream trip to the Scottish Highlands? Well, for H.Y. Hanna, she sits down and puts her protagonist, Gemma Rose, in the middle of the heather, the haggis, and the homicide. I have always been entertained by the tearoom theme, foodie talk, and multi-generational cast, but adding references to Scottish myths and folklore, a castle, a Highland hunk, and exploring whisky makes this twelfth book the best of the series! The mystery itself was enjoyably complex with the victim having varied conflicts from business to personal, and as details are revealed, dead ends exposed, secrets divulged, identities questioned, and a suspect list hard to whittle to one, readers, like me, had a great time pondering all the possibilities. Of course, what’s a murder investigation without The [four] Old Biddies who show up unannounced with Gemma’s mischievous cat in tow offering witty insights and creative investigative methods. A third party seems to complicate the on-a-break couple, Gemma and Detective, but karma (via H.Y. Hanna’s well-written story) has a way of throwing them together.

I loved the talk about Scottish treats which had me exploring my cookbooks, and, of course, a trip to the Scottish highlands is not complete without a bit o’ whisky! Enjoy your favorite whisky (or whiskey) with this easy-to-follow recipe for Chocolate Whisky Cake. Also, the information about barrels of whisky as an investment commodity was curious — it’s disappointing my retirement counselor never mention that for my portfolio. This series and this book is Highlanderrific! It once again is at a major contender for “You’re the Top” list for 2023!

I received a free copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

A High Whisk Situation is the twelfth book already in this series. Tearoom owner Gemma goes on a vacation to Scotland in this book and then stumbles upon a dead body in the castle they're staying. This book had a change of scenery with the characters visiting Scotland, I often feel a bit conflicted about scenery changes in cozy mysteries. On the one hand I like seeing a different place and how it can make the story feel fresh and on the other hand I miss the familiar surroundings. I thought it worked rather well here, but most of the story takes place in the castle and I would've liked to see Gemma experience a bit more of the country and try more of the baking as she had planned, but that didn't really work with the mystery being so focused on the castle.

The mystery had a slight locked room vibe, but as there were so many guests and staff involved it didn't really felt like that limited the pool of suspects very much. It did add an interesting twist to the mystery with Gemma having to figure out who was downstairs at the time and who could've killed the victim. The victim is the hotel manager who was pretty unlikable, so plenty of people had a plausible motive. There were plenty of red herrings and secrets that come to light during the book, which is one of my favorite things about this author's books.

Unfortunately I struggled a bit with this book as well as the few recent books by this author. I feel like I read simply too many of her books in the last few years and they have become a bit stale to me. I've grown to expect certain things happening or can guess who has a real chance of being the murderer and who not. I settled on two suspects here and one of them was indeed the murderer. There are a lot of scenes which are supposed to be funny, but started to rub me wrong. There are so many coincidences with how Gemma stumbles upon clues and patterns in how she talks or acts. Like with Muesli escaping and her accidentally finding a clue or her trying to get the biddies out of trouble and joining them. It adds a sense of familiarity, but it also makes me feel like a lot of the same things happen in these books. I plan to read her next paranormal cozy mystery when it releases as that wraps up the series, but maybe take a break from her books then for a while, so that when/ if I come back to them they hopefully feel more fresh.

To summarize: A High Whisk Situation is a chance of pace for Gemma as she goes on a vacation to Scotland. I kinda like and don't like the change of scenery, it's nice to have a different location, but I also miss the familiar location. The mystery had plenty suspects with a slight locked room feel as it's clear someone in the castle did it. There are red herrings and secrets that come to light during the mystery, which I liked. I didn't always like how Gemma acted or handled things. I didn't like how Gemma finds so many of the clues by coincidence instead of going after them. And I've been struggling a bit with how the latest books by this author have started to feel a bit stale to me as they feel quite similar in style. I can predict certain twists or have read certain situation so often they just start to rub me wrong. I managed to predict who the murderer was toward the later part of the book.

For the most part I’ve quite enjoyed this cozy mystery series. Unfortunately, this one featured too much of “the Old Biddies,” four busy-body older women who get involved in sleuthing and too often just seem like caricatures of older women. It also emphasized what a bad “sleuth” our heroine Gemma really is.

When Gemma is forced to close her Oxford tearoom for a week due to plumbing issues, she ends up heading off to Scotland to a castle in the Highlands where her best friend, and waitress Cassie is going to be teaching a painting workshop. Within hours of arriving, there’s a murder. With a number of disagreeable guests at the castle, suspects abound. At least this time, Gemma won’t be meddling in one of Oxford Detective Devlin’s cases. At the end of the last book her boyfriend Devlin said they needed to “take a break” in their relationship, when he was nearly fired due to Gemma’s investigations into one of his cases.

This could have been a really fun mystery, with a great setting (a castle turned into a resort) and a set of interesting guests all present at the castle at the time of the murder. Unfortunately, once again the four “Old Biddies” appear at the castle the day after the murder, ready to investigate. It’s not that I dislike older characters in books; I’m definitely older myself. What I dislike is older characters who appear as stereotypes of everyone’s bad impression of an older person, with seemingly no awareness of boundaries (or a complete disdain for them).

Many scenes felt like repeats of previous books, with the Old Biddies breaking into rooms and Gemma trying to stop them, and Muesli her cat repeatedly getting into trouble while escaping, leading Gemma to conveniently find clues. Gemma also lurches from suspect to suspect, assuming each is the killer.

I was excited in the beginning when Gemma went with Cassie to the castle. I thought we would get more interactions with the two of them, but they were limited. This was a great setting that could have been played up much more than it was. Overall, this was just okay mediocre for me I will definitely pick up the next in the series, but hope it feels a bit fresher. I would give this a C-, so barely 3 stars.

A wee little mystery to keep you guessing and I loved it. The author certainly knows how to entertain and I loved the way that she even managed to include her regularly characters into the adventure to add there own investigative skills and chaos to the fun. The mystery as well as being set in a beautiful setting, which was described well making it easy to imagine, kept me guessing with so many suspects. I did think Gemma ended up suspecting and accusing everybody, so that didn't help narrow down the suspects. The Murder weapon also add a good mystery to the story with all the possibilities. The Scottish words were fun to try and work out what was being said and should make the audio book an enjoyable experience.
With the tearoom having to shut down for a week for urgent repairs, Gemma has no reason not to join her best friend Cassie on a trip to Scotland. While Cassie is teaching her painting class to hotel guests, Gemma plans to experience Scottish traditions like whisky and high teas. Instead she stumbles over a dead body and another murder investigation. As soon as the 'Old Biddies' learn of the murder they pack there bags and head to Scotland to help with the investigation. The dead woman wasn't very nice to guests or staff so the suspect list is long. Can Gemma, the 'Old Biddies' and Muesli the cat find the killer amongst the guest of the hotel? Or is it an outsider like the police think who is responsible?
I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I have missed Gemma, Muesli, the Old Biddies, and the rest of the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries cast! I'm so glad to read another installment and to "see" Scotland through Gemma's eyes. It sounds so beautiful! This book has just what you would expect if you've read the other books in the series. I had to laugh when Gemma tells the inspector that she's seen "a few crime scenes." At this point she's an expert!

The other thing I love about these books is the descriptions of food, and since we're in Scotland in this book, there were a lot of new foods to learn about as well as whisky (which is the way the Scots spell it). I've never had whisky before, but now I want to try a little. I didn't know there were so many varieties!

I loved this book like I loved all the others I've read by this author and hope the series will continue!

Lots of laughs and packed with action!
Gemma and Cassie are in the Scottish Highlands in this story and along with the old biddies they get into all sorts of shenanigans after Gemma stumbles across something other than books in the posh Castle that they are staying at library.
This story has a great mix of characters and the story really grabs you as it keeps you guessing until the very end.

With plumbing issues closing the tearoom for a week, Cassie persuades Gemma to go with her to Scotland, where Cassie is conducting a watercolors workshop for guests at a castle turned luxury hotel.

Upon arrival, Gemma meets several unpleasant persons, anyone of whom readers will happily mark as candidates for murder victim or murderer.

In her post-midnight hunt for her cellphone—I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t have to have my cellphone in my hand at all times—Gemma discovers the one who is murdered, and, of course, embarks on discovering the murderer.

Being of an age with the “Old Biddies,” the term Gemma and Cassie use in exasperation, irritation and even affection for the quartet of senior women who help--if frequently unwanted help--in Gemma’s sleuthing, I appreciate the contribution these women make. In fact, it was the presence of the Old Biddies that was responsible for me picking up the first Oxford Tearoom Mystery. But it is Gemma herself that calls me back to the series. Gemma is so genuine a person on the pages that I wish I knew her in real life. (Maybe without the murders. I'm not an intrepid as the Old Biddies.)

Characters and relationships develop over the course of any series, and this series is no different. However, in this twelfth book in the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries, H.Y. Hanna deftly blends enough backstory that a newcomer to the series can enjoy this tightly crafted cozy mystery.

So, put the kettle on, grab a plate of scones or shortbread cookies and settle into your favorite chair to absorb the Scottish atmosphere and match wits with a clever murderer and our more clever crime-solving heroine and her cohorts.

This is volume 12 in the Oxford Tearoom Mystery series, with a twist: this is the first story that does not take place in the Oxford Tearoom, or even in the city of Oxford.

Gemma's friend Cassie is taking a short trip to Scotland, leaving Gemma to take care of the tearoom by herself. But lo and behold, the tearoom plumbling breaks down, and Gemma will have to close down the for a week, for repairs. Cassie invites her along on her trip, and rather than staying alone in Oxford, she accepts, and the two of them go off to Scotland for a change of pace. Of course the four biddies also show up unexpectectly in Scotland, including the mischievous Muesli (who is my favorite character in the series) bringing the whole gang together again in a completely different location instead of in Oxford. It's interesting how the author managed to work the plot to get everyone out of Oxford for a change. Gemma loves the Scottish highlands and the hotel (castle) where they are staying, and she looks forward to rest and relax while she's there. But of course, we all know that wherever Gemma goes, someone always ends up being murdered and she ends up in the middle of the investigation, but as always, she eventually helps to solve the murder mystery, with the interference... err..."help" of the Old Biddies. There were some twists and turns in the story, which kept me guessing who the murderer was until the very end. Excellent and very entertaining story. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Once I started this 12th book in the series, I couldn't put it down. We are taken to Scotland in this book, which has always been on my bucket list. Cassie gets invited to a very beautiful Scottish castle hotel to hold art classes for the tourists. When Gemma's tea room has to close down for plumbing repairs for about a week, it is the perfect time for Cassie to convince Gemma to join her on a much needed vacation and to take her mind off her boyfriend, Devlin a detective back home, who wanted a separation for a bit. Since she has to close the Tea room, she decides to go with Cassie. And besides, she can go on a taste and recipe to bring back some wonderful baked goods to Dora. We meet the very disagreeable manager and lots of very diverse vacationers of various means. When Gemma finds the dead manager, she decides to quietly investigate with so many possible suspects. To add to this, the Old Biddies from back home show up with Muesli and of course they want to help solve the murder. We are definitely offered a good bit of laughs. With lots of twists and turns and surprises, we are turning page after page until the wonderful ending. I love this series and the characters are very unique in their own way. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I really enjoy HY Hanna's Oxford Tearoom mysteries and this latest installment did not disappoint. Poor Gemma can't seem to catch a break unless it's a broken plumbing system! With the tearoom shut down, it's the opportune time for her to head off to the Scottish Highlands with her best friend, Cassie. Gemma leaves her beloved kitty, Muesli, in the care of the "Old Biddies."

Gemma and Cassie are met at the airport by the handsome Ewan Campbell, who happens to work as a ghillie at the Aberglinn Castle. No castle would be complete without its share of ghost tells, myths, and legends and Aberglinn has all of the above. Sadly, the castle also has a very disagreeable hotel manager who seems to antagonize everyone she comes into contact with. When Gemma stumbles upon her dead body in the library, the number of suspects includes not only the staff but also the guests. It wouldn't be an Oxford Tearoom mystery without the Old Biddies and Muesli showing up to help solve the mystery.

Not only does the mystery draw the reader in but there is the bonus of learning more about the Scottish Highlands and of course, the whisky! I loved the recipe included for Chocolate Whisky Cake and can't wait to try it out.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next installment.

A fun Highland romp with my favorite cozy mystery characters!! When plumbing woes get her down, Gemma’s friend Cassie invites her on a well-deserved getaway to the Scottish highlands to a castle where she is teaching an art class to a group of tourists. But not everything is as it seems within the castle and cast of characters she encounters. When she stumbles on the body of the acerbic castle manager, she’s drawn into the case even when on holiday! Luckily she’s got her previous experience and clan of Old Biddies showing up to help crack the case! It was nice to get away from Oxford for a bit, but I found myself missing the village. I was able to suss out the killer as my backup suspect but I still had a lot of fun! Really enjoyed the use of the Scottish phrases and learning a bit of the legends. Ms Hanna was clearly very inspired by her recent trip there herself! Absolutely loved the ending and the author is always generous in sharing some of the noted recipes in the end so inclined readers can immerse themselves in the world all the more! This is a series I always come back to with such sweet world-building. Highly recommend!!!!

When a plumbing disaster closes Gemma's teashop in a small town just outside Oxford, she reluctantly accepts her friend Cassie's offer to join her in a Scottish castle where she has been hired to conduct a painting workshop for a few days. The description of the gorgeous castle and grounds in the Scottish highlands are enough to make you want to book a vacation there. The midges and the rain, not so much!

To Gemma's shock, the Old Biddies just happen to show up at the castle before the body is even cold. As they had been asked to care for Muesli in Gemma's absence, the spunky cat has also travelled along with them in his carrier. :)

Devlin (who has asked for "a break" as he was nearly fired from the police department because of her interference in a murder investigation) also shows up. He just happens to be on a search and rescue training program in the wilds of Scotland.

This book is absolutely delightful fluff, a feel good story to brighten a gloomy winter day. I especially love the typical chaos caused by the Old Biddies, and even by Muesli. How can the image of 4 old ladies crawling up ladders and through windows, and hiding in a shower where they are joined by Gemma and a potential bad guy not make you smile?

A High Whisk Situation takes readers on a journey through the beautiful Scottish highlands. H.Y. Hanna masterfully weaves together a captivating tale that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

One of the standout features of this book is the attention to detail. From the vivid descriptions of the rugged terrain to the nuanced character development, every aspect of the story is carefully crafted. As a reader, it's easy to get lost in the pages and feel fully immersed in the world that the author has created.

Another highlight of A High Whisk Situation is the plot itself. With plenty of twists and turns, the story keeps readers engaged and guessing until the very end. Each chapter leaves you eager to know what will happen next, and the resolution is both satisfying and unexpected.

Overall, if you're looking for an immersive cozy mystery novel that transports you to the beautiful Scottish highlands, A High Whisk Situation is definitely worth checking out. It's clear that the author poured their heart and soul into every page, and the result is a truly unforgettable reading experience.

Friend Cassie is invited to give an art class at a Scottish castle/hotel and convinces Gemma to go along. While Gemma hopes to have a quiet getaway, she finds the body of a staff member and gets involved in the murder investigation. Conveniently, her ex(?)-boyfriend Devlin is in a training course nearby, but Gemma has her eye on the handsome castle ghillie. Then the Old Biddies show up dragging Muesli along in her cat carrier, although they drop in and out of the story and are not key to solving the mystery. Can Cassie and Gemma solve the murder before he strikes again?

Ms. Hanna can really paint a picture with words - I could almost see the moors and mist and the descriptions of the baked goods and whisky had my mouth watering. She took some Highland specialties home with her, so maybe we will read more about new recipes for the tearoom in future books. It was fun to explore a new place with Gemma but maybe the Old Biddies could stay home next time. Because most of the main characters appear in this book, it would probably be better to read the earlier books first. I recommend this book as an enjoyable cozy read with a good plot and plausible ending.

I think this is my favorite book of this series. Gemma's tearoom needs new plumbing so she agrees with her friends to close the tearoom for a week. She has an opportunity to tag along with her friend to a Scottish castle and taste some Scottish baking. Yay. Thank you H. Y. And she will get to do some girl bonding in this one. This part is so much fun. Thank you for not making Gemma babysit the awful kids. Gemma is kind of a sneaky person and hears a few key conversations before the murder.
The way Gemma finds the body is pretty creepy. I loved it. Just the right amount of "ahh." So many sweet cozy moments mixed with investigation. I didn't even mind Devlin so much although I still feel a bit of loathing for him. He's always minimizing Gemma I listen to the audiobook and when he comes into the story I always give the British two fingered salute. He was sort of, a very tiny bit more likeable in this one. Nah, still giving him the two fingered salute.
The ending was just what I wanted. I didn't see it because it was such a great twist. Not exactly who did it but...no I had better not say.

In the past, the tearoom has had an uptick in customers and has received wonderful word-of-mouth reviews. Lately, they have seen a reduction in the number of customers primarily due to some unpleasant odors invading the place. As a result, Gemma realizes she will have to close the Little Stables Tearoom for a week while all of the plumbing gets replaced. Gemma's friend, Cassie, is scheduled to teach art classes to the guests at Aberglinn Castle / Hotel and she convinces Gemma to accompany her. Unfortunately, Gemma's time at the castle is not all rest and relaxation.

On the first night at the castle, Gemma finds the body of Aileen, the castle's general manager, in the library. Aileen was not well liked by any of the staff and is very rude to the guests. She had a reputation of being cruel, selfish, and greedy. She was also reputed to use blackmail whenever possible.

Who killed Aileen? Why was she killed? Can Gemma unravel the mystery and expose the culprit?

H.Y. Hanna has another wonderful story with great characters and realistic situations. Definitely looking forward to more stories in this fabulous series.

Gemma is back for another adventure – this time she and her BFF Cassie go on a road trip to a Scottish Castle when she has to close her Little Stables tea shop because of plumbing problems. What could go wrong you ask. Just a relaxing time in Scotland, checking out the Scottish tea and sweets and bringing back new recipes for her shop. Well first night in the castle she finds the dead body of the castle manager, whom no one liked. Which means suspects abound. Will Gemma discover the murder before anyone else is murdered? I love the Oxford Tea Room Mysteries and this one did not disappoint. I could not put it down, trying to figure out “who done it.” I highly recommend this book. It can be read as a stand alone, although you will be eager to read the rest of the series after reading this one. Each one is as good as this.

I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

After the bombshell ending of the previous book in the series, I couldn't wait to read what happened next. A High Whisk Situation did not disappoint and was definitely worth the wait! I enjoyed the new scenery and getting to explore a bit of the Scottish Highlands and gorgeous architecture through Gemma's eyes all from the comfort of my own home. H.Y. Hanna's vivid and detailed descriptions really transport the reader into the storyverse for a fully immersive experience. The Old Biddies were definitely in fine form once again, as was the ever mischievous Muesli. I love the banter and over the top situations that the octogenarian group bring to the equation. Having known ladies much like them throughout my life, I can't help but adore their shenanigans. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for our heroine and her friends.

Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.

Tearoom proprietor Gemma takes a break from tea and scones to head to the Scottish Highlands with her best friend Cassie. Cassie has the opportunity to teach a painting workshop at a castle-turned-hotel, but things go wrong when the hotel’s unpleasant manager is murdered. There are plenty of suspects and clues for Gemma to sus out, and, of course, the Old Biddies arrive on the scene to “help”.

I really enjoyed the change of scenery in this twelfth installment. Author Hanna paints the perfect picture of the area, castle, food, and drink. I am ready to pack my bags and go. The mystery is engaging, and the recurring characters are like old friends. As always, Muesli the cat is a highlight for me.

A HIGH WHISK SITUATION is a solid entry in the Oxford Tearoom Mystery series. There is murder, romance, friendship, and mayhem to please any cozy mystery reader.

I received an ARC of this title and voluntarily shared my thoughts here

I am a huge fan of this series, the characters, and the author. We have read/listened to them all. This latest one was set up to be the best one yet but I just can't get past the whole Devlin thing. I'm uncertain if the author writes Gemma this clueless in love deliberately but there is no way that a grown woman is this immature. The on again/off again romance between Gemma and Devlin has gone far enough. It's conflict for conflict's sake without any real growth. It seems that Gemma never learns and has no idea how to treat a man she purportedly loves and adores. She behaves like a spoiled child and seems to have zero self-awareness. Sadly, the mystery was brilliant. The villain was well-hidden and the motive was deep enough to resonate. The rest of the characters were predictable and solid, amusing, and insightful. I'll stick around for the next story but if there isn't a resolution (get together or get out), I'm out. It's far too frustrating.

I usually love HY Hanna's books. I've listened to this entire series, the Bewitched by Chocolate and the Garden Sleuth ones, but this book. Yikes. It took everything I had to get through it. I did manage, but honestly it didn't really get better. Pearl Hewitt once again narrated the audio, and she was excellent as ever. If not for that, I wouldn't have finished.

The charming Scottish setting was such a cute idea, and I loved the details about Scottish culture, history and food, but that's the only charming thing about this one.

Gemma is always a little whiny, and lacking in any sort of sense, but in this she was nearly unbearable. And Cassie. Don't even get me started. She's usually such a likable character but until nearly the very end she acted like a petulant little brat. So out of character.

I don't know if this series is wearing out, or if this was just a one off. But this one was a miss for me.

H.Y.Hanna never disappoints, her descriptions of the characters in this cozy mystery set in Scotland are so accurate, and being Scottish myself I immediately recognised the hotel manager Aileen Ferguson as being similar to someone I had met whilst staying in a Scottish hotel. The American Jerry Hudson, a typical cliché of a Texan, the castle owner and the castle, described in great detail.
I had thought because it was set in Scotland the old biddies wouldn’t appear, but was delighted when they turned up with Muesli the cat in tow, to cause their usual havoc.
This is the 12th book in the series and this one is every bit as enjoyable as the first one, the characters have developed so well they are like old friends.
This is a book to read with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit, curled up on the sofa and enjoy every minute of the story.

Scotland a wonderful place to visit even without a murder. A wonderful series with some of my favorite characters. The change in location adds a touch of magic to the story. Gemma goes on a holiday with her friend Cassie and instead of a peaceful relaxing vacation, they end up entangled in solving a murder mystery. Poor Gemma, still hurt by Devlin’s wanting to “take a break” in their relationship, the last thing she wanted to do is fight with Devlin about who the killer is. The twists and turns in the story along with the amount of suspects who hated the victim made the story fun to read. Once again Gemma solves the mystery and another fantastic story is added to this series. Highly recommend this series and this book.
