Cordell Wilder agreed to be legal guardian for his nephew Bowie as a “just in case” because that’s what big brothers do. His brother Jesse wasn’t actually supposed to die.
He thinks it’s his lucky day when he learns he’s not the only guardian. Maybe he can be the fun Uncle instead? Y’know, like a part-time gig.

Marley Ashley is the younger brother of Jesse’s wife or as Cordell knows him, huge pain in the ass. Marley is Cordell’s polar opposite, and now they’ve got to raise a kid together? How is Cord supposed to co-parent with someone who can’t even show up to an appointment on time?

They need to come up with a way to co-exist and get their nonsense together or it’ll be Bowie who suffers.

Wild Ash is the first novella in a special MM verse from S. Legend, bestselling author. It’s a captivating series about the families we’re born into, and those that we make for ourselves. It features snarky men, hot southern buttery cowboys, and plenty of fun-loving antics.

Some of you know her as Mock, others as S. Legend, or Miss S. She welcomes all names but will often go by Mock, a name given to her by her readers.
Mock is an ambitious creative, weaving the most precious aspects of her soul into stories. She is an architect, building fascinating worlds, designed from inquiry, rooted in worldly wonderings. It’s an intuitive process where she is the scribe, the translator, the conduit.
It helped that storytelling was the language spoken at home. One simply didn’t say, “We have an ant infestation,” in Mock’s family it was, “I was on my way to the living room, when a peculiar ant crossed my path. I looked to my right, a suspicious line of them marched toward the pantry. In that moment I knew; my kitchen was under siege.” The natural flow of conversation always took this form.
And so.
When Mock wrote her first novel, she didn’t plan it chapter by chapter, there was no outline, no “plotting” to speak of. But she didn’t “pants” it either, she didn’t make it up as she went along. She knew how the story felt, where it curved in places and hollowed in others; she knew the destination it rushed toward. Instead of orchestrating, she let the world inspire her, and held space for the words to come, trusting the characters knew what they were doing. All she had to do was tell a story, as she always had done; like breathing.
This is her peace, her healing and solace: Gifts better shared.
Mock’s works are the comfort you seek when you need to come home. Her unique writing style will take you, wayfaring reader, to unexpected destinations.
She always says, “I’m not in the business of making up stories, I couldn’t if I tired. I’m lucky enough to get picked to share someone else’s story when I ask a question to the universe. Someone answers; I write it down.”

Jesse and Eva were killed, leaving 2 1/2 yr. old Bowie in the joint custody of Jesse's brother, Cordell, and Eva's brother, Marley.
These stories do not stand alone.
Cordell Wilder, 35, 6'5", shoulder length wavy blonde hair,
Marley calls him "Swayze"

steady and solid, has a dairy farm in Texas, and raises other animals, also.
Marley Ashley, 29, on cover, has medium build,

lean muscles, dark hair and is quite sassy, yet emotional, and a great cook.
There will be a lot of rules for this shared custody. Bowie misses his family, and takes affection from each man. Cordell does look like his brother Jesse. Cordell/Cord and Bowie do pretty well on the farm, while Marley is back at work in the city in Oklahoma. The two men have funny banter, flirt, and argue, too.

* The humor is sometimes in an awkward place, but laughter comes with the tension and situation where our two men are shocked and insecure in their ability to raise their nephew.

It's not a match made in heaven. They struggle, are making it work, where Cord is strong willed, and Marley has his own standards. There are bumps in their road, and when Darcy, Marley's brother screws up, Marley helps him, it's costly, and he brings Darcy to the farm to overcome his issues.

The Ashley's are a big, complicated family, with a special domination dynamic. Family is important to both men and they want to raise Bowie well.

Our men finally get around to sexy times and it's super passionate. They need to get along in daily life, too.

Then this tale ends, but will continue in the next one.

This story is a terrific set up for the series and we learn what are men are like, and learn about their pasts, mostly. This is fun, serious, heartwarming and sexy.
Now we have an HFN, and move on to WILDER ACRES, with more cowboy excitement.

ENJOY !

DNF @ 12%.

A tragic freezing-to-death skiing accident (🤷‍♀️) leads to these two not grieving at all but sending an annoying amount of texts, which are formatted in the most annoying manner. The annoying texts seem to be the plot so far. There is a kid in this book, I think… maybe he’ll make an appearance at some point, or maybe he will continue to remain off page. And I just don’t think I can get behind someone unwilling to stick tea in their house.

3.5 rounded to 4

I enjoyed the first novella of the Ashley Family Rules series . Wild Ash has forced Proximity, grumpy/sunshine , unexpected co parenting , a slow burn, angst, sexual tension and a dash of steam at the end. The the synopsis ' says it ends on a HFN but also feel likes it just stops which is why I immediately started book 2 lol

I am excited to bring you a verse of characters who are very special to me. We'll start with about 3 novellas and then things will probably get wild from there.

Post Release (spoiler ahead):

So most of you figured me out and I love it! Yes! Of course these guys will have Head of House/Taken In Hand dynamics. This is just where I go!

We'll go deeper into this in the next book.

I wanted to take a different approach and this was it. These novellas are Marley and Cord's story. I'll elaborate more on Marley's family in a new series.

You don’t have to have a thing for cowboys to love this book but it sure doesn’t hurt! The banter between Cord and Marley is so entertaining! Cord is set in his ways and Marley is turning his life upside down. Yet they both have committed to caring for Bowie. The loss of their siblings and bad past relationships have them both putting up walls of protection. They don’t even realize that those walls are slowly crumbling.
Marley also has a “strange” family (that I already love with all my heart) and a bit of a secret. I wonder how long it will be before Cord figures it out? I need more of this right now!!!!

This novella was so cute! I loved the slow burn and loved the banter. I have no idea how to review it though because there’s a second part, it’s not over yet.

I have been meaning to read this the moment it was released, but the way my life has been recently, it meant I couldn't give this the time I wanted to really enjoy it. Until last night. I finally, FINALLY, got the opportunity to sit and engulf every inch of this in one go!!
And let me tell you this... it was SOOOO worth the wait!!
There's cowboys. Need I say more. Wait!! Yes, I need to say more. 'Cause there's tiny cowboys (Bo-bo *heart eye emoji*) A mock story wouldn't be complete without found family. There is ALL the potential here, and I know Mock will deliver!! And of course, there's none of the usual spanking shenanigans in this book, but the undertone is definitely there (and I can see where it's leading *wink emoji*), and there were many I time I got *that* feeling.
Everything about this was perfect. Cordell might be a grumpy little so-and-so (I promise no cursing from me, Cowboy... I don't want a taste of your mama's concoction) but from the very first paragraph, he was MY grumpy little so-and-so. I was snuggled under my blanket, smirking like a love-struck idiot from the very first line.
And Marley... damn... my heart went out to him constantly. And of course, his antics had me constantly chuckling. Such a loveable ball of sunshine that just deserves the right to shine brighter than anyone else.
Of course, the moment we met the Ashley's... and because Mock had explained it over on her IG... I know this story is a future verse of a story she's been working away at since Jan 2015. I went back over my bookmarks and I jumped on the Mock bandwagon in Feb 2015 (I checked - the story was on chapter 13 when I found it) and I never left. That verse, THIS verse, has such a special place in my heart forever and always.
The only complaint I have?? 3 books is not enough. I have needs, Mock!!
So, TLDR: Mocks done it again with scrummy cowboys, loveable-sunshine-character-who-deserves-so-much, found family, and idiots-in-love.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed Marley and Cord’s story. It’s a sweet, mildly angsty, slow burn and I’m very much looking forward to reading book two.

This book, wow. I'm not much for cowboys, but dang, I am now! 'Swayze' and little Bowie sold me. I want to live in this world. The characters are fully explored, the setting clear and beautiful. The imperfections in the main characters are realistic and make you want the best for them. This book is sexy, funny, touching, and did I mention sexy? It felt like I knew these characters for years... It was so easy to fall into this world. I am so excited to see what comes next! Cord and Marley are bound to have many adventures together and I can't wait! Don't miss this book and get any others you can get S Legend, you won't regret it!!

You win some, you loose some. In this case, I won in a big way when I stumbled upon heartbreak hockey and gave it five stars (no, I am not sick (now), it was just too good and made me too happy to be a hardass about it) and then I picked up Tristan, thinking 'this is what made the author so popular' and... nope. Just no. We didn't fit but you don't just give up so I reached here and... it's possible I should just stick with the hockey books.

Honestly, as much as I consider myself to be more experienced reader (and I also do write books), there are some things that still elude me, confuse me and the fact the author made that amazing book that I adored and then I found one I just couldn't read and now I found this nice (with reservations) piece... like, how? Because the style is the same, the themes (kink, characters) are the same and yet... howdy, my feelings are so different.

And to be clear, we work on paper (even Tristan did) - the plot, the world, the characters, it all sounded exactly like my cup of tea. But the kink was far more present in both of them and I kinda suspect that made the biggest clash.

And oh boy, what a way to make it. Even HH had this certain, pardon my French, porn quality to it. In a good way, actually. Five hockey players slept in the same bed in a puppy pile (not always in the brotherly fashion) and it felt like they were all sexually open and adventurous. "Normal" hockey books deal with the whole coming out issues. In HH, there was no issue, the coach kissed his player in the locker and everyone just cheers or, you know, thinks they're hot. It's my favourite kind of dealing with it (as I said, you can either fight the system or just show us the version of the world you want to see and this was definitely the second one). But it gave it a bit of an "unreal" quality because of it, because characters acted by logic that is more common in, well, erotica.

And this was much stronger in this book. Ashley family rules? Spanking. Power exchange. Some people are tops and the rest follows their rules. I mean, seriously, if someone tells you the main character got regularity spanked by the males of his family and still is hold accountable to them? Tell me you wouldn't automatically think 'eortica'?

Except, of course, this was all normal. It was unique and they knew it but it was considered healthy and natural. And there lied my problem. I can understand and accept if someone comes to realize they need this discipline, power dynamic. I am very confused how kids could have consented to such system and why is the whole family supposed to be automatically into power exchange automatically and all identify themselves in that particular kink corner. At least in Tristan, what little I read, it made sense because elves and fantasy, ya know? But the only thing that made Ashleys unique is money. So it felt all kinds of iffy when I stopped to think about it for a second and I already have a bit of a personal pet peeve with controlling family members so it was another case of meeting of two opposing forces amidst a book that I could have really liked and now I just liked it.

And to be fair, this first book (It's too short for a first book so I don't feel bad mashing the review of the two into here) is more than tame and you can't really tell the pushy, know-it-all Marley is secretly waiting for the cowboy to lay down the rules. But he does. And he will. And you find out what all this Ashley family nonsense is all about. And it's not a porn-y thing either. It's considered real and serious. And they may say it's not sexual. But the way it's described? It's not just a 'family that still believes in corporeal punishment' and my point still stands.

I still think the author knows their stuff but I will rather stick to the new stuff instead of rummaging around all these domestic discipline books (that would absolutely enrage my inner feminist if a woman was involved and now she's just.. ticked off) - I will at least after I get my hands on the third book. Because that cliff-hanger was just mean.

LOVED THIS BOOK!

Wild Ash (Ashley Family Rules) Book 1 is the first novella in a new series by S. Legend. The story centers around Cordell Wilder, a brooding farmer, and Marley Ashley, a snarky and lively man with many secrets. When tragedy strikes, the two suddenly find themselves co-parenting a two-year-old which sets the stage for many hilarious interactions as the two battle it out for domination while resisting the growing passion developing between these two unlikely characters.

Legend does a phenomenal job crafting a world filled with humor, mystery, and intrigue; teasing readers with information that keeps readers flying through each chapter until the very last page! The Author warns readers upfront that this is a MM romance with a HFN ending as this is only Book 1 in a 3 book combined series. Book 2 is currently available, and judging by how good Book 1 was, readers will be salivating over Book 2 as well.

This book is highly recommended for those who enjoy MM romances with a bit of snark, mystery, and characters that you can’t help but fall in love with.

I really like this author's style of writing... color me surprised! Even if the story had been bad, which it wasn't, the style of writing caught my attention right off the bat and held me! I knew going in that this was going to be a 3 book no HEA until the end of them and I am kinda OK with that.

Marley is intriguing (Darcy is just flat-out fascinating) and Cowboy, I mean Cord grows on you... eventually! *grin*

But, as we know, the baby and the animals just keep stealing the show! I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that the author doesn't have children or they have a VERY advanced two-year-old running around their home... and yeah, potting training can be a bitch! LOL!!!

Now, to find a place to slip Wilder Acres into my reading schedule... because I just have to know!

I’m absolutely invested!

I’m a tried and true fan of S. Legend (Mock). That said, this story and it’s characters have captured my heart. I love the mentions/connections to a couple of beloved characters from another work. Their inclusion made my heart swell. However the cast of main characters that make up Wild Ash have pulled me in. Not only do I want to continue with the main story I want to delve into the lives of the peripheral character stories as well! I read this book in one day and surprised myself by reaching the last page unexpectedly! I wasn’t ready! Luckily I have Book II waiting in the wings! I’m chomping at the bit to see how this family grows and being a witness to how they get there! I’m here for it all!

From Elves to Cowboys and everything in-between, S. Legend never disappoints.

Cordell is a total heartthrob (I may have a thing for farm boys) and Marley is just the sweetest. The two of them together is just too much. Add baby Bowie to the mix and my heart exploded.

And talk about slow burn romance. Holy hell, the tension was so thick between Cordell and Marley you could taste it. I don't know how many times I yelled "just kiss him already!" But when it finally happened. *BOOM* Tension gone.

I loved this story and I'm jumping right into the second book right now.

Mostly OK

The beginning is good, laced with strong emotional moments and touching memories, but as the storyline progresses the author attempts to weave mystery into the plot and mostly fails. There is something ongoing, a part of the plot which remains hidden from the reader and the clues are few and scattered. The introduction mentions the complete story arc will include all the books in this series but the delivery so far does not have me inclined to continue.

I love this author, and I'm on a cowboy kick so I decided it was time to pick up this series. This first book is a short novella, and it introduces the characters. Marley and Cordell get custody of their nephew (Marley's sister and Cordell's brother were married & died) Bowie. There are hints in this book of what is to come (read: Mock's top/brat dynamic), but only hints. I love DD so I'm hoping we move on to that at least somewhat in the next book.

DNF @7%

Two MCs meet in a lawyer's office to discuss custody of their nephew after their siblings death and one of the MCs spent the whole time laughing, joking and teasing the other mc. Not sure what kind of person thinks that's appropriate behaviour when your sister has just died but it's enough for me to know this book is not for me.

I absolutely loved the banter between Marley and Cordell. Their interactions had me crying from laughter. Throwing Chey and Darcy into it all, just added to the fun. Good thing I have the second book already.
I only just now discovered Mock's writing, but I am in, hook, line, and sinker.
