If I am ever asked what helped me the most in my french learning journey, I will always say this book. It built my foundation and made everything very easy for me I went from A0 to B1 advanced just by solving it's exercises
Not too bad, but there are much better ways of learning a language than old-fashioned textbooks. Look into Michel Thomas, Assimil, French for Reading and Listening-Reading. There is also a course called French in Action which I don't know in its entirety (it's supposed to be excellent for conversation), but which includes a fantastic 52-episode series that you should watch.
I highly recommend this book to those who are mainly interested in learning how to read and write French. In fact, for this particular purpose, it is far superior to another work: "Complete French: Teach Yourself" by Gaëlle Graham. For that book is designed for people who want to learn how to converse in French.
The best French textbook I've even read. Although this book is for beginners, sometimes I still have to revise it because of its interesting way of introducing French
didn't like the fact that they started with pronunciation and the book is not kindle-friendly. Apart from that, information is organized and presented in such comprehensive manner
This is a great book which provides clear grammar explanations and exercises and at the same times helps you build slowly your vocabulary and your reading comprehension. However, I’m rather disappointed. The cons, in no particular order: (1) I was actually interested only in the grammar because building vocab and/or reading comprehension the way they propose you do is not the optimal pace if you learn quickly; (2) I am also not interested in translating from French to English so I skipped all those exercises; (3) it only convers grammar and not syntax, which is fundamental as well.
Great, if you are starting out with French. Grammar and pronunciation is easily explained and dissected so that you aren't drowning yourself in complicated French.
Perfect book for those who forget the grammars they've learned. It's great reminder book. Just wanna say it would be nicer to have more exercises in, or an extra workbook.
Je pense que ce livre est bon pour débutant de langue Français. Il y a seize chapitres, où vous apprendrez l'indicatif est un peu aussi le subjonctif et le conditionnel.
So as I tried to say, it's a good book for beginners in French, and in sixteen chapters you'll learn the basics for the indicative mood, subjunctive and conditional moods.
For the first ten-ish chapters I tried to do all the exercises and write down each vocab word, but after I realized, personally for me doing every exercise isn't necessary. So I only did a handful from then on and just covered more material faster.
It's a good resource for learning introductory French grammar and vocabulary but if I were to restart, I would try to get the gist and try to take in other French media including books, shows, videos on YouTube etc. For that reason, I enjoyed the Reading Comprehension sections at the end of each chapter. They're easy enough to understand and actually addresses some interesting topics, including some social issues and other interesting topics.
About as good as a language-learning textbook can be. Although I started studying French several years ago, this book did two things for me: it helped me brush up on the very basics and it showed me the grammar and vocabulary that I hadn't learned (or learned well) in my self-taught efforts. It surprised me to learn that this is a beginner's text--it sure covers a lot of ground. Anyway, I would readily recommed this to anyone interested in learning the WONDERFUL French language. We are lucky, us French learners, to have many good resources available to us, and Myrna Bell's books is indeed a good resource.
I recently endeavored to study French — after merely having had a brief introduction to it during my school days — and this book offers a good start for any (advanced) beginner who wishes to grab the basics. As a self-study learner, I am thoroughly determined to advance my studies and want to approach even more references on my path to a solid foundation of my knowledge. Having said this, I greatly recommend this particular book for anyone striving to trace the paths of learning this beautiful language.
Read almost 300 pages and did lots of exercises and still won’t be able to carry on a conversation with anyone. The only part of the book that I loved were the reading exercises. I wish there were more in increasing level of difficulty.
As the tittle said - it is EASY to understand. I was pretty skeptical about this book, but it turns out to be just perfect. The grammatical explanation is on point, everything is concise and clear, you won't have to second guess anything and it will save you tons of time
It is a great book for beginners! I highly recommend. I’ve been learning so much from it just in these past few weeks. I just wish it was still on the Language Lab app.
I recommend this book to all who want to learn French. I believe it is very complete, and has a fair amount of writing exercises. I've studied and reviewed this book for months now and it gave me the confidence I needed to resume my learning path. It is a lot of information so take your time with it - there are form tenses I'm still struggling with and think they could've been better approached. Even so, I am extremely pleased and am able to pinpoint every single subject I still need to work on.
