Absolutely zero chemistry between the main characters, which doesn’t bode well for a romance manga.

I've been really interested in what Steamship has been doing with their titles and I've had this particular title on my shelf for a while. I made the decision to pick it up for the #30in30readathon and I wasn't overly impressed. Game: Between the Suits follows two office workers who enter into a situationship of sorts where they are competing to maintain a physical relationship without falling for each other. It works, in some ways, for Fujii Sayo because she can't maintain a relationship with any man because of her dedication to work. The spicy scenes were okay, but the characters lacked the connection that I anticipated which led to me not feeling as invested in their situation. While the back and forth has potential to not only be engaging, but messy I'm not in a rush to pick up the rest of the volumes.

She's a workaholic. He's an asshole womanizer who can't understand why his lines aren't working on her. Is there actually any attraction between them, or is he just trying so hard because she's the one woman who tells him no? The answer is somewhere in this enemies-to-lovers story about two people trying very hard to keep ignoring that the problems in their lives are very much of their own making (by having lots of sex with each other). It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion, and having already read the four volumes of this that are out in French, I can say that it's the kind of story that it's hard to look away from.

We had to read 2 wrapped manga...right? Okay now this is exactly what I wanted it to be. Do they like each other? Who knows. But I certainly intend to find out 👀.

Does this have sexism? Absolutely. Was I still wildly entertained by this? Yes. Somehow this ridiculous setup had me cracking up and wanting to devour more of these two going down the fuck buddy-to-love pipeline.

Eh, there’s a lot of sex, but there’s no real substance here since both characters are “cold fish” emotionally. I don’t think I’m that invested at this point to see if they ever fall for each other.

I thought it was quite interesting with FL and ML playing the "sex game" but the last 20 chapters I read, it became pretty meh already with them separating for a bit to "try it out" with other ppl...

4.5 Wanted a little more plot

Personally this one hit all my favorite tropes. I love that we have a very driven career woman and a driven co-worker who end up starting game to not fall in love. This is very heavy on the smut in a great way and I'm excited for volume 2.

When I opened this volume, I was sure I wouldn't like it, however my opinion changed a little ways in. I don't know if I'll ever *love* this series, but I definitely understand how Sayo feels. A woman in the workplace, especially an office setting like this, can be easily looked down upon. In Asia it's not uncommon for women to work in an office until they get married and then quit to stay at home.

Sayo however, loves her job and is dedicated to it. She takes on more work than the majority of her male coworkers, and unfortunately this has not made her popular and has definitely impacted her love life. Ryouichi is very obviously a playboy/shark and though he starts chasing Sayo because he can't say no to a pretty woman, I think he keeps chasing her because she refuses him and intrigues him with her struggle to be seen as both a woman and a dedicated employee.

I'll pick up the next one and go from there.

My favorite steamship title so far. We have two office workers who decide to play a game, they'll have a strictly physical relationship with the caveat that the man is trying to steal her heart. I love their dynamic so much! It's art is fantastic and spicy! I highly recommend this title.

This was pretty lame and tame considering it is suppose to be mature. The two main characters are quite boring and have zero chemistry with each other.

I sadly read a really bad translation of this which is mainly my score for this. The manga has potential to be really good but due to the bad english i didnt give me any deeper meaning. Which i think is there but just lost in the translation. Sometimes i had to guess what was happening. Will try and find a better translation or i might give up on the series.

DNF at page 68

I was already hesitating if I would pick up this series but a YouTuber I watched enjoyed it but he could see why others wouldn't. We have somewhat the same taste in enjoying problematic stuff so I thought this would be one I could enjoy.

I really really didn't. And my reasons aren't even because of the dubious consent stuff. It's how Japan see women who are ambitious. Apparently doing the same thing a man would be lauded for is enough to utterly destroy her character behind her back. Saying stuff just hard enough so she could hear it. And not only her colleagues but also the men who she shared her bed with.

Enter the main male character, who does exactly the same but also utters the magical word: love.
Sorry dude. Just saying the words isn't enough, maybe not do the same entitled stuff as the other men simply because she is a woman?

The power dynamic between men and woman drive me nuts in Japanese society. And when a manga tries to show a female character trying to succeed despite the strict gender and societal rules but she gets put down so hard, well to me that's not a recipe for smexy times.

The intention of the Steam Ship Imprint of Seven Seas is to give some smutty manga targeted at women, but for me to enjoy smutty stuff I need unrealistic power dynamics or something to change it up. Not just saying ''I want to love you.'' That's not what makes a story sexy.

Also the woman never seemed to enjoy anything they did? At all? Beyond a good orgasm I mean. No laughter or joy was had.

I'm not rating this because I didn't finish it (there goes my 8,39 euro...), but I had such a visceral negative reaction that it deserves my thought written out. I'm almost tempted to return it but I think people who return read books are a bit rude. It feels like ignoring the 'You break it, you buy it'-rule.

Fuji is frustrated that she cant keep a boyfriend (due to her being a total workaholic) so when a hot new guy (Ryouichi) starts at her firm, they start up a friends-with-benefits kind of a deal "game" (where whoever falls... loses? idk but I am here for it)

This one's spicy in a classy way, there is some nudity but it's all handled tastefully (imo). Ryouichi has no right being so fine & he's obviously SO into Fuji... ugh I love it!

I also absolutely love that our main characters are adults and everything is consensual--can't wait to pick up the next volume!

5/5⭐ 2/3🌶

For a smutty romance manga the romance itself seems to be pretty slow burn and I really appreciate that. From what I've read of smutty romance manga so far, the romance aspect is generally pretty intense from vol.1 and onward so this slower development is kinda nice. I really like the MC, she's very dedicated to her job and is pretty much a loner wondering why she's so good at being alone. She's straightforward and is basically just trying to figure out what she wants out of a romantic partner. I'm not sure how I feel about the love interest yet, but I do like the relationship between him and the mc so im not too worried about my lukewarm feelings toward him. Anyway, a solid first volume and a great setup for the story. I look forward to future volumes.

I dug this out of my friend's get-rid-of pile because the guy looked like a character I was writing, not really for the story.

It veers into rape-y, barely consensual so I knocked stars, but I do understand it's a story, fantasies can go wild, so... whatever...

I want to see this man sob his little heart out so for that, I would consider reading more. It also needed a parallel scene where while they are in the act, she takes a work call, but he reacts like "oh you" instead of getting all pissy. Maybe in another volume? We also don't know anything about either character really and I'm not sure the first volume hooks you enough to give that a chance.

Cap 25.
