Callisto
Odell Deefus, who's not the sharpest tool in the shed, has one goal: to "try my hardest to be a good soldier against the mad dog Islamites." But while driving to an army enlistment office in Callisto, Kansas, his '78 Chevy breaks down on the side of a country road, and it's only the beginning of his troubles. When he accepts a local's offer of shelter until the car is repaired, things go from bad to worse—worse as in murder, drug dealers, tenacious televangelists . . . and finding himself a prime target of the FBI, which thinks he's a member of a terrorist sleeper cell. And none of it bodes well for his unrequited crush on Condoleezza Rice. But fear, rash judgments, and extreme reactions are simply the norm in a post-9/11 world. Odell will just have to deal with it.

Fermi tutti, pensa Odell Deefus
La bravura di un autore spesso può essere paragonata alla velocità con cui mi fa immergere nella storia. E Krol, credetemi, mi ci fionda dentro senza neanche passare per il via. Ci si accorge subito che il protagonista, Odell, ha qualcosa di "strano" ma, al contempo, ci vogliono poche pagine per armonizzarsi con lui e i suoi pensieri.
Il sunto della trama è corretto però non riesce minimamente a inquadrare questo romanzo di denuncia così particolare. Quanto una congiunzione astrale di piccole coincidenze può sconvolgere e alterare il volto dell'America? Se Giano era un Dio bifronte, la nazione delle stelle e strisce ha tanti volti quanti i suoi stati.
Linguaggio
"Il mio nome è Odell Deefus. E sono bianco, non un nero come pensa chi non mi conosce e sente dire il mio nome. Se poi mi incontrate, la mia faccia ve la scordate subito, è troppo anonima, chi se la ricorda, semmai vi rimango impresso perché sono alto. Sono un metro e novanta, quindi attraggo le donne, che poi però scoprono che non faccio discorsi che gli piacciono, e a quel punto addio storia d'amore prima ancora che comincia.

"Sedeva così calmo e svagato che pensai magari si è drogato, il che nel caso era una pessima notizia visto che quasi tutti quei tipi che prendono droghe è inquietante starci accanto se non sei un fattone un fattone anche tu, e ho già detto che io non lo sono. Insomma la serata non stava mettendosi bene."
Stare invischiati nel pensiero di Odell è divertente. Incuriosisce. Spesso e volentieri fa ridere:
Linearità che complica
La bravura di Krol è usare un linguaggio povero per 400+ pagine senza mai annoiare. Non solo, mostrare la felicità basilare, definirei istintiva di Odell - si sofferma costantemente su urgenze impellenti quali l'alimentazione o i bisogni fisici - ripetendola senza mai stancare è qualcosa di veramente ben strutturato.
Trama
Che intrico! Che bordello: un lavoro certosino per rendere caotico qualcosa che avviene esattamente nel momento esatto in cui sarebbe dovuto accadere per creare scompiglio. Inoltre il giocare tra i personaggi e Odell mette in atto scenette e fraintendimenti degni di un'intrigo internazionale.
Denuncia
C'è una denuncia chiara e netta contro la politica america e i diritti umani calpestati:
La verità è che non si accetta una mente che ragiona in maniera semplice. Il desiderare poco e accontentarsi di quello che gli viene offerto è segno di derisione o, peggio, di falsità. Bisogna essere furbi, melliflui, fregare il prossimo, perchè ehi! Mors tua, vita mea. Se chiedeste a Odell, lui proporrebbe di appianare i malumori con un pranzo surgelato e un cicchetto di Capitano.
Pelo nell'uovo
Se proprio devo trovare qualcosa che non mi ha convinto in questo romanzo è l'uso - sporadico - di termini troppo forbiti per il protagonista. Capisco che l'autore li usi per colorare il suo linguaggio però, chiaramente non può conoscerli visto che pecca su forme molto più basilari.
Anche il sogno nel capitolo 10 che espone una verità, non mi ha convinto.

Geniale, secondo me l'autore di questo libro è geniale!
Cosa può accadere a un ragazzotto ventunenne del Wyoming, Odell Deefus, bianco ma con un nome da nero, che ha letto 16 volte "il cucciolo", innamorato di Condoleeza Rice, della quale porta una foto nel portafoglio, una specie di Forrest Gump, che parte dal suo paesello a bordo di una Chevy Monte Carlo del 1978 per recarsi a Callisto per arruolarsi nell'esercito americano? Il tutto nell'America post undici settembre, che vive nel terrore e nell'incubo del terrorismo musulmano?
Di tutto può succedere: può succedere che incontri sceriffi che usano la macchina della verità come se fosse un giochino, agenti FBI con l'ossessione della caccia ai terroristi, folcloristici predicatori cristiani con tanto di tv via cavo e raduni oceanici, agenti dei servizi segreti che più segreti non si può. Tutto questo perchè, a causa della macchina in panne, Odell si ferma in casa di Dean Lowry, un fuori di testa con tendenze omosessuali.
E Odell? Nonostante le "disavventure" cui va incontro mai viene meno la sua fiducia nel sogno americano. Anche alla fine, dopo che è stato sottoposto a trattamenti previsti per i terroristi musulmani, Odell è e rimane il ragazzo americano medio: grazie, grazie al Governo degli Stati Uniti - dice Odell- perchè se gli Stati Uniti non fossero stati un grande Paese che combatte per la libertà di tutti i popoli del mondo lui non avrebbe avuto la sua seconda chance.
La storia è divertente ma al contempo fa riflettere sulla società americana post- Bush, lo stile è sgrammaticato e sconclusionato e rende perfettamente il personaggio (tanto che, è la prima volta che mi capita, il traduttore in fondo al libro ha scritto tutto incavolato che non vuole più tradurre "il gran bifolco Odell Deefus con i suoi imperfetti al posto dei congiuntivi), e ... dulcis in fundo, sul retro della copertina c'è una foto di Condoleeza Rice nuda sulla bandiera americana!

I'm on a hot streak with good books and Callisto keeps up my good stretch. I read Krol's The Dolphin People in March and enjoyed it, Callisto is equally as good. Krol is someone to pay attention to in the future--although I wish he wasn't using a fake name for his books. That's kind of annoying for some reason.
Callisto is set mostly in small town Kansas as a simple-wit's car breaks down. All he wants is to get some water and a ride into town but soon he's drawn into a case and the police, FBI, media all want to get him as he's got murder and terrorism hanging over his head. Callisto is a funny, dark satire that takes on all kinds of topics--overly religious people, small town people, the American government, the idea of the terrorist--all done with entertaining aplomb by Krol (or whatever the person's real name is).

Darn it! Ummmm....So why is this not famous here in the US? Every American should read this dark US Satire. I know I did and I loved it.I didn't know what to expect, but I loved it and if you read my reviews I don't love books very often. I loved the idiotic "Forest Gump innocent" protagonist. Very great portrayal and very believable.He was ignorant and endearing, and very charming in a saddening sort of way. This book, I was wondering, why isn't it famous in the US! That drove me crazy, I found it at a library and I laughed out loud at the very first sentence. Very funny hook. That's why I checked it out.
Odell Deefus won my heart over. He'll win yours over as well. The novel is written with a strong first person narration, very stylized but readable. I found it hilarious but very dark. Some parts of it had me holding my breath, this author got every part of the US down from the racism to the politics of some very ignorant people.It was an amazing novel. It grabbed me from start to finish, Torsten Krol did an amazing job! Odell was loveable and quirky from his infatuation with Condelezza Rice to hisadoration obsession for that awful novel.
Let me tell you this much if you are a Republican or Democrat here in the US you may not find this book interesting, you may hate it but b there's a message but you can't deny it. But suck it up. That's the beauty of it. The "War on Terror" , paranoia sweeping the "political-heads". Wonderful quirky book. A little dark in some parts but very true! It's happening right now and it isn't fiction. Pick this book up, you'll be glad you did!

Ebbene sì, questo romanzo folle si merita ben 5 stelle (e io le concedo davvero con il contagocce).
Non saprei nemmeno bene come descriverlo, se non che è un libro folle, geniale, originale e intrigante. ASSURDO.
Siamo in Kansas ed è il 2007. Il narratore, nonché protagonista di questa strana vicenda, è Odell Deefus, un ventenne un po' (tanto) strano, terribilmente ingenuo, tanto sensibile quanto ignorante (ci tiene a ricordarci che non è riuscito a concludere gli studi e a ottenere il diploma non perché fosse stupido, ma perché all'epoca "non c'era con la testa"). Un giorno d'estate si mette in cammino dal suo piccolo paesino alla volta di Callisto (tipico paese rurale del sud) con un unico semplice scopo: arruolarsi nell'esercito - non per amore della patria, ma per avere un posto fisso e uno stipendio decente perché dicono che lì sono talmente disperati da prendere chiunque e quindi avrebbe una chance di farcela. Ma la macchina si rompe e ha inizio un'epopea di cui non avete idea. Davvero, non avete idea. Leggere per credere!
Menzione importante per la prosa: il narratore è uno di quei ragazzotti genuini di campagna che non è nemmeno riuscito a diplomarsi, che non è mai stato tanto bravo a scuola e che ha passato gli ultimi anni a lavorare in fabbrica. Cosa significa ciò? Significa che ciò che leggiamo esce direttamente dalla sua bocca (anzi, dalla sua mano visto che sta scrivendo il libro sulla sua vita) e non possiamo pretendere molto, quindi dite momentaneamente addio a grammatica e sintassi corrette! Idea geniale e coerente, eseguita alla perfezione tanto che la lettura risulta comunque scorrevolissima e tanto verosimile.
Sì, proprio un bel romanzo americano.

Abgebrochen auf Seite 207...
Nee, Odell Deefus und ich werden keine Freunde. Seit 3 Tagen hab ich nun schon keine weitere Seite gelesen und letztendlich realisiert, dass es mich schlichtweg nicht interessiert, wie diese Geschichte weiter- oder gar ausgeht.
Aus der Sicht von besagtem, geistig etwas beschränkten Protagonisten wird diese Geschichte erzählt. Odell will sich bei der Army verpflichten und ist deswegen auf dem Weg nach Callisto, wo ein Registrierungsbüro sein soll. Auf dem Weg dorthin bleibt seine Schrottkarre liegen. Er dringt daraufhin in das Haus von Dean Lowry ein, hinter dem bereits ein großes, grabähnliches Loch ausgehoben wurde (hinter dem Haus, nicht hinter Dean). Bald überschlagen sich die Ereignisse, Odell übernimmt Deans Leben, verliebt sich in dessen drogendealende Schwester und verstrickt sich immer mehr in Lügengebilde. Und all das war für mich weder spannend, noch interessant oder witzig. Odell ist leicht beschränkt und denkt demnach gerade von A nach B und redet sich auch ziemlich viel zurecht. Zudem hat er es in gewissen Situationen schwer nicht gewalttätig zu werden. Im Grunde hört sich das ja nicht schlecht an, aber für mich hätte eine Aneinanderreihung vom Bla bla bla den gleichen Effekt gehabt. Mir fehlte die Spannung, die Rafinesse und ein schön formulierter Text. Dabei gibt es ein paar gute Stellen, welche mir jedoch bei weitem nicht reichten. Callisto ist einfach kein Buch für mich, auch wenn ich mir vorstellen kann, dass es anderen gut gefallen könnte, die eben andere Ansprüche ans Lesen und das Erleben von Geschichten stellen.
Da ich mich jetzt nicht auch noch an meinem freien Wochenende weiter quälen möchte ist an dieser Stelle Schluss und ich fange ein anderes Buch an.
Falls jemand Interesse haben sollte: Mail an mich mit der Versandadresse und ab die Post. Falls mehrere Interesse haben entscheidet das Los. Und eure Daten werden nicht gespeichert und nur zu diesem Zweck verwendet und anschließend gelöscht. Bis Sonntag habt ihr Zeit, Montag geht das Buch dann bei bestehendem Interesse weg.

Εξαιρετικό. Ένας πραγματικά πολύ καλός συγγραφέας κάνει (μαύρο) χιούμορ και δηκτική σάτιρα της αμερικάνικης νοοτροπίας, της αμερικάνικης υστερίας με τους μουσουλμάνους και τους τρομοκράτες, των τηλεοπτικά διαφημιζόμενων εμπόρων της θρησκείας (τηλε-ευαγγελιστών λεγόμενων), των μυστικών υπηρεσιών κλπ. Ένας νεαρός, αρκετά στούρνος από μυαλό, βρίσκεται στο λάθος μέρος, τη λάθος στιγμή, γίνεται πιόνι και παρασέρνεται από διάφορες ηλίθιες απόπειρες επηρεασμού της αμερικάνικης κοινής γνώμης. Πολλή πλάκα και θυμίζει κάπως Στίβεν Κινγκ, περισσότερο Φόρεστ Γκαμπ και μια ιδέα road movie, όλα σε ένα σκηνικό επαρχιακής αμερικάνικης ερημιάς όπου τα μυαλά είναι στενά, οι αποστάσεις μεγάλες, είναι εύκολο όχι μόνο να κρυφτείς, αλλά και να κρύψεις κάτι (ακόμα και πτώμα) και γενικά το μόνο για το οποίο μπορεί κάποιος να ψάξει εκεί είναι ένας τύπος για τον οποίο δε νοιάζεται κανείς και δε θα τον αναζητήσει αν χαθεί. Εύφημος μνεία στην καταπληκτική ικανότητα του συγγραφέα να απεικονίζει πειστικά τους ηλίθιους χαρακτήρες, τους διαλόγους, τη νοοτροπία τους και το πώς έχουν ο καθένας μια κοσμοθεωρία που δικαιολογεί τις πράξεις τους. Πολύ θα ήθελα να δω πώς θα αντιδρούσε στην ανάγνωση αυτού του βιβλίου ένας Αμερικάνος αναγνώστης, ειδικά ένας έξυπνος Αμερικάνος, όπως ο Στίβεν Κινγκ... Διαβάστε το και επίσης το άλλο του ίδιου συγγραφέα, "Οι δελφινάνθρωποι".

Aivan järjettömän hyvin kirjoitettu kirja. Täynnä mustaa huumoria. Odell Deefus joutuu kerta toisensa jälkeen mitä käsittämättömimpien tapahtumien keskipisteeseen tutustuttuaan Dean Lowryyn jonka hän vahingossa teilaa pesäpallomailalla. Soppaan sekaantuvat Deanin sisko Lorraine johon Odell ihastuu, Saarnamies Bob ja hänen apurinsa, Donnie Darko ja Marky Mark, agentti Kraus ym. ym. Odell joutuu aina vaan pahempaan liemeen yrittäessään peitellä Deanin kuolemaa. Lopulta häntä luullaan terroristiksi ja kohdellaan sen mukaan. Kirja on surkuhupaisien sattumusten sarja. Odell on lopulta vain yksi pieni pelinappula isoissa kuvioissa. Kirjan terroristikuulustelut ja kidutuskuvaukset vaikuttavat toden tuntuisista ja tuleekin mieleen onko kirjailija itse kokenut vastaavaa tai haastatellut jotakuta saman kokenutta. Tämä selittäisi kirjoittamisen salanimellä, kukaan ei tiedä kuka Torsten Krol on henkilönä. Toki kyse voi olla vain taitavasta kirjoittamisesta mutta teksti on todella elävää ja voimakkaasti kuvailevaa. Jumalan kaltainen ja yhtä salaperäinen Jim Ricker ohjailee Odellin kohtaloa ja ehkä kirja onkin allegoria elämästä jossa pieni ihminen pistetään mankelin läpi voimattomana hallitsemaan omaa kohtaloaan. Loistava kirja joka tapauksessa ja loistavasti kirjoitettu.

Ik weet het niet precies, maar het was absurd, grappig, vreemd, en droog en diep tegelijkertijd waarbij je telkens op het verkeerde been wordt gezet en heftige gebeurtenissen leest vanuit het meest droge perspectief ooit. Ik heb het boek verslonden. Kan ik uitleggen wat ik precies heb gelezen? Nee? Raad ik het aan? Ja!

Potremmo immaginare un’ipotetica scala di blues letteraria che va da William Faulkner a John Steinbeck passando per Raymond Carver, un intervallo di quinta diminuita, in cui due gradi della scala diatonica vengono abbassati dando così origine al tipico suono malinconico e stonato. Ipotizzando che i gradi abbassati siano Cormac McCarty e Pete Dexter, mancherebbe all’appello ancora una nota della pentatonica, il Krol, la “blue note”. Quella aggiunta clandestinamente: la sesta di cinque. Un’eccezione rispetto alle altre scale, un’eccezione che nel caso dello scrittore mancante è data dalla sua nazionalità. Torsten Krol è australiano, ma il suo ultimo libro, “Callisto” (ISBN edizioni), è puro blues. Leggere Callisto è come ascoltare un bluegrass primitivo suonato da un’orchestra di chitarre distorte; è come osservare il “Gotico americano” di Grant Wood, ridipinto in chiave contemporanea. Al posto del forcone, un fucile d’assalto.
Pensate agli altri cinque autori della scala, pensate alla loro America, quella della bible belt, delle strade e dei paesi dimenticati da Dio e dagli uomini. L’America profonda e scura che rappresenta il ventre molle e allo stesso tempo il cuore pulsante della nazione. Lontano da New York, lontano dal San Francisco, lontano da Washington e da Chicago. Ebbene Callisto, Kansas è là. Così lontana eppure così vicina tanto che l’11 settembre, la guerra in Irak, l’esportazione della democrazia, l’islamofobia e il sogno (infranto) americano si attorcigliano l’uno sull’altro in un thriller denso e scuro. I didn't know what to expect when I picked up Callisto, but this turned out to be the best book I've read this year.
O'dell Deefus is not exactly what one would call a genius but he is patriotic and determined to help protect his country from Muslim extremists. So, with his favorite book in hand he decides to travel to Callisto, Kansas to sign up at the recruitment office there. O'dell's problems start however, when his car breaks down and he's forced to stay at the house of Dean Lowry. Before he knows it, he's embroiled in a murder, suspected terrorism plot and is being followed by the FBI not to mention many other unscrupulous characters.
On the surface, Callisto is just a comedy that picks fun at the stereotype of the American innocent but Odell is a surprisingly engaging and sympathetic character. Despite laughing at his misadventures, you really are rooting for him and some of his moments of insight are so simple and clear that they're heartbreaking. At the end of the day, Odell really does have a heart of gold.
Most importantly, for all of the knee-slapping hijinks there is a serious and dark undercurrent to Odell's story. When he is taken to Guantanamo Bay we get a pointed and scary commentary on Government-sanctioned torture.
This is all in all a fantastic read and I strongly recommend it. You'll laugh you'll cry and at the very least you'll get to read about probably one of the only men to have a crush on Condoleeza Rice.

Apart en soms een beetje bizar boek. Odell Deefus is een wereldvreemde man die niet de aller slimste is. Als hij met motorpech ergens rond het stadje Callisto strandt begint een avontuur, waarbij Odell van de ene rare situatie in de andere belandt. Hij klopt aan bij een huis en de bewoner, Dean, vraagt hem binnen. Als Dean wel wat van auto's af weet maar het deze avond al te donker is om goed te kunnen kijken wat er aan de hand is, brengen de mannen een aangename avond door met sterke drank en bier. Odell ontdekt een pas gegraven graf in de achtertuin waar hij van Dean niet had mogen komen en denkt dat dat graf voor hem bedoeld is. Als Dean hem die nacht op een onaangename manier wakker maakt, slaat Odell hem neer met een knuppel. Hij brengt Dean naar zijn slaapkamer en slaapt verder op de bank. De volgende ochtend blijkt Dean dood te zijn en wordt Odell door een bezoeker voor Dean aangezien. Er komt terrorisme om de hoek kijken en Odell probeert iedere nieuwe situatie zo goed mogelijk te doorstaan of te veranderen, maar het loopt vreselijk uit de hand, waar bij de FBI betrokken is en een paar andere geheimzinnige andere overheidsinstanties. Het boek is in een bepaald ritme geschreven. Ik vond het wel wat hebben, maar het blijft bizar.

Can't remember when I last enjoyed a read this much. A seeming simpleton is driving through Kansas to enlist when his car breaks down. In seeking help, thus begins a cascade of events that are by turns hilarious, sly and leave you teetering on just how much smarts the protagonist has. Armed with a working knowledge of how to cover up your trail through watching "CSI", this is still a man who has only ever read one book, "The Yearling" sixteen times! It's a delightful study in plotting as the author fiendishly manipulates the clues that by turns will betray the crimes committed and then deftly cover them up from discovery. And there's a great study in how the main character allows his thinking process to be swayed by the love of a (not so-) good woman!
A delightful criminal romp which gets a bit more serious in the last quarter and changes tone accordingly, where it also becomes rooted in a serious contemporary issue. But by that point I was utterly carried along and charmed.

I loved this book. Odell is such a lovable, relatable narrator. We all know someone like Odell. The plot moves along seamlessly, and Odell's descriptions of and reactions to the events unfurling in his life are hilarious and heartbreaking.
The underlying theme, post-9/11 hysteria and its implications, is so incendiary, and this novel satirizes the situation so perfectly. Odell's story, as told by Odell himself, is so drenched in his own naivete and kindheartedness that it makes the biting satire seem more palatable (if you have a problem with biting satire, which I don't!).
The only problem I have is that Odell is meant to be a "big dumb hick," according to the author. However, he speaks in metaphors a bit too often for someone of his supposed mental acumen. And honestly, the author's pseudonym and self-created mystery surrounding his/her true identity is irritating and boring.

Al momento non puo' essere *bellissimo* nel senso di anobiana definizione, ma è a un tanto cosi'. Usare senza annoiare un linguaggio volutamente poco forbito e a volte sgrammaticato, per 400 pg, non è da tutti. In piu' fa sorridere, fa pensare, fa provare emozioni - perchè è vivo, e Alberto Sordi, con 'Detenuto in attesa di giudizio', qualcosa deve averci insegnato.
K. si sara' nascosto nell'outback australiano, ma il fatto che una traduzione di questo libro possa arrivar fin qui fa ben sperare - circa la traduzione del prossimo.

I had no idea why I even picked this book up. But so glad I did.
What a fun wild ride it was.
O'dell Deefus is one of the best satirical characters in fiction.
I also love that I know nothing about the author. It let's the book stand on its own merits. Of which it has many.
If you like fun, dark and we'll plotted cultural satire do yourself favour and read this

Callisto, das ist ein kleiner Ort mitten im großen Nichts im US-amerikanischen Kansas (Hallo Dorothy...ein erster Hinweis auf den 'Zauberer von Oz'?). Nun, nach Callisto verschlägt es den nicht besonders hellen Odell Deefus, dessen altersschwaches Auto auf dem Weg zum Rekrutierungsbüro liegen bleibt. Im nächsten Haus an der Straße stößt er auf Dean, einem zunächst etwas seltsamen Zeitgenossen, der aber Odell bei seiner Panne behilflich sein möchte. Beide scheinen sich anzufreunden - auch wenn Dean nicht verstehen kann, warum sich Odell freiwillig in den Irak-Krieg melden möchte - aber nach einem gemeinsam durchzechten Abend springt Odell in Deans mobilen Rasenmäh-Service als Ersatzmann ein. Doch als Odell hinter dem Haus ein frisch ausgehobenes Grab (noch ohne Inhalt) entdeckt, wird er misstrauisch und legt sich sicherheitshalber den Baseball-Schläger neben seine Schlafcouch. Als er von Dean unversehens in der Nacht geweckt wird -- Dean glaubt einen Einbrecher gehört zu haben und steht mit der Schrotflinte bewaffnet an Odells Couch -- wähnt sich Odell in Todesangst und zieht Dean den Baseballschläger über den Schädel....
OK, klar, dass das nicht ohne Folgen bleibt. Zwar scheint Dean noch am Leben, aber eben höchstens noch gerade so. Das Haus, in dem die beiden sich befinden, gehört eigentlich Deans Tante. Die wäre laut Dean angeblich in Florida im Urlaub. Als Odell am nächsten Tag wieder als "Rasenmähermann" einspringt, wird er zuhause von einem Geistlichen erwartet, der ihn für Dean hält und sich angeblich im Auftrag der Tante nach Deans seltsamen Bedürfniss zu erkundigen, zum Islam zu konvertieren. (Klingt schon ziemlich schräg, oder....?). Daraufhin lernt Odell auch noch Deans (der mittlerweile den kümmerlichen Rest seines Lebens nach der Baseballschlägerattacke ausgehaucht hat) Schwester, die (zumindest in den Augen Odells) attraktive Gefängnisaufseherin Lorraine kennen und gerät unversehens in Drogengeschäfte, die Lorraine zusammen mit ihrem (jetzt verstorbenen) Bruder zur Versorgung der Gefängnisinsassen aufgezogen hat. Als Odell in der wohlgefüllten Tiefkühltruhe im Keller nach einer neuen Pizza kramt, lernt er den wahren (und ziemlich frostigen) Aufenthaltsort von Deans Tante kennen und ahnt, dass das im Garten ausgehobene Grab gar nicht für ihn bestimmt war. Jetzt fängt das Ganze an noch schräger zu werden.
Odell hatte das Grab zugeschaufelt, aber bei den Ermittlungen der Polizei wird das (leere) Grab wieder auf- und erneut zugeschaufelt. Jetzt beschließt Odell Deans Leichnam, der mittlerweile langsam in Verwesung begriffen ist, eben dort unterzubringen, da die Polizei das Grab ja bereits überprüft hatte. Doch am nächsten Tag soll das Grab zum Zweck der beim ersten Mal vergessenen Videodokumentation erneut ausgehoben werden. Also wandert Deans Leiche in der Nacht wieder aus dem Grab heraus (ausschauffeln, zuschauffeln), das Grab wird am nächsten Tag erneut ausgeschauffelt und wieder zugeschauffelt (zum Zweck der Videodokumentation) um danach wieder erneut ausgehoben zu werden, da Dean ja schließlich irgendwo bleiben muss....Hatte ich erwähnt, dass mittlerweile herausgekommen ist, dass Dean eigentlich schwul war (ein kompromittierender Videomitschnitt beim Karaokesingen in einer Schwulenbar ist aufgetaucht).
Dann war da ja noch diese Sache mit dem Islam. Dean wollte anscheinend konvertieren (doch eigentlich sagte er das nur, um seine Tante zu ärgern...), aber Odell bauscht die Sache auf, um auch einmal im Mittelpunkt der Medien zu stehen und fortan besitzt Calisto, Kansas, jetzt auch seine eigene, brandgefährliche islamistische Terroristen-Zelle und das FBI und der Heimatschutz schalten sich ein. Selbst ein ultrageheimer nicht näher genannter Dienst mit einem Geheimagenten namens 'Jim Ricker' tritt auf und sendet Odell verschlüsselte Botschaften über dessen Handy (Dieser Jim Ricker ist es auch, der in gewisser Weise die Rolle des 'Zauberers von Oz' einnimmt...). Odell verstrickt sich zusehend im von ihm selbst ausgelegten Netz. Am Ende gerät er gar selber in Verdacht, der gesuchte Top-Terrorist zu sein, ein Weg, der ihn sogar bis nach Guantanamo (auch wenn der Namen des Ortes nicht genannt wird) bringen wird....
Kann das gut ausgehen? Wie kann sich der mit nicht allzu reichlichen Geistesgaben ausgestattete Odell aus diesen Verstrickungen wieder befreien? Dabei habe ich gerade ja nur einen kleinen Teil des komplexen Plots aus Irrungen und Wirrungen ausgelegt. Jede Hauptfigur scheint ihren eigenen Interessen zu folgen - und die sind oftmals alles andere als legal. Callisto, das scheint eine wahre Mördergrube (wie der Covertext verspricht)...und mit Terrorismus ist ja schließlich nicht zu spaßen.....
Wirklich, die Abenteuer Odells sind schon ziemlich schräg, aber lustig. Verpackt wird das ganze mit einer derben Kritik am US-amerikanischen Umgang mit Andersdenkenden und der vorherrschenden Terrorismus-Paranoia. Alle halten Odell für etwas zurückgeblieben (Forrest Gump lässt grüßen), aber er ist ja kein schlechter Mensch, daher gelingt im auch das schier unglaubliche, nämlich aus der ganzen Sache (mehr oder weniger) heil wieder heraus zu kommen. Sollte ich es mit einer Zeile zusammenfassen, dann käme dabei heraus "Forrest Gump meets the Coen Brothers". Würde mich auch wirklich nicht wundern, wenn das Buch in diesem Stil verfilmt werden würde ;-)

Een bijzonder boek. Lijkt een beetje een simpele thriller en is het ook weer niet. De hoofdpersoon is een simpele Amerikaan/autist, die ‘niets heeft gedaan’ en ‘alles overkomt hem’. Doet ook denken aan de 100jarige man..

Una satira feroce della società americana (in particolare di quella dell'America rurale, di quella che – per intenderci – sostiene con entusiasmo personaggi come Donald Trump) post 11/9, fatta da uno scrittore australiano che vive nell'isolamento dell'outback e comunica con l'editore solo mediante posta elettronica. La storia è quella dell'antieroe perfetto, Odell Deefus, bifolco ventunenne che parte dalla provincia per arruolarsi nell'esercito ed "esportare la democrazia" in Iraq. Nel tragitto verso il centro di arruolamento, a Callisto, si trova invischiato in una serie kafkiana di peripezie. Non si salva nessuno, tranne la paranoia di un'America in guerra con sé stessa. Da leggere assolutamente (anche per la nota del traduttore Francesco Pacifico), consiglio in abbinamento con "La fine della libertà" di Gore Vidal.

Sarà che non amo molto gli intrighi, ma questo romanzo non mi ha convinta del tutto. Il protagonista è un ingenuo piuttosto ignorante, ma io non lo paragonerei a Forrest Gump come hanno fatto molti. Forrest mi era simpatico, mentre Odell in alcuni momenti non mi è parso per niente ingenuo, anzi piuttosto scaltro. Tutte le peripezie attraverso le quali passa mi hanno un po' sfiancata nella lettura, salvo poi indignarmi fortemente per quello che subisce sul finale del libro. Capisco il valore di critica e di denuncia del romanzo, ma, rimanendo su un piano strettamente letterario, devo dire che non mi ha conquistata.

Stupefacente e meraviglioso.
Un vero intrigo Americano. Pane per i cospiratori. E chissà, magari realtà occulte?
Certo è che Odell Defus( bianco con nome da negro. Cit.) lo ami e lo odi e poi lo ami e lo odi ancora. Ma ad un certo punto ti trovi a non riuscire a smettere di leggere con gran pena le avventure di questo grande e grosso americano, che da patriota ce lo ritroviamo a terrorista islamico.
Storia divertente ma che ti lascia un grande amaro in bocca.

I'm on the fence with this book.
Personally I didn't like it. The main character was irritating and made the most simple and stupid mistakes that ended up escalating into chaos. Though I'm aware he is supposed to be this way it still irked me.
However, it had some amusing and comical moments. If this is your kind of book then I recommend it as you may enjoy it.

No puedes llegar a creer que la historia de Odell, un chaval de 20 años con pocas aspiraciones y decidio a enrolarse en el ejército pueda terminar de esa manera.
