Two nerds - One Lab

Who will come out on top!

Micah

For the last several years I haven’t felt very confident, my ex made sure of that. Working in a medical lab can make it easy to hide. When my flirty new coworker bursts onto the scene, he's the distraction I don't need. I'm content to come in and do my job, but he's determined to insert himself into my life. He’s exhausting, yet funny, and makes me feel wanted. Am I ready to feel attractive again?

Lucas

I moved here for my sister and my family. When Thalia got sick, she became my world. I knew I’d do anything to take care of her, even taking a job outside of my comfort zone. When I meet Micah and we almost share a night of passion, I’m convinced meaningless hookups are no longer what I want. The problem is convincing him to want the same. There’s something about him that I want to protect. My dirty lab puns and nerdy talk might drive him a little crazy, but I’m determined to win him over.

Nerdy Talk is an Opposites Attract, Nerd/Playboy romance with lots of laboratory references and a nosy well-meaning best friend. It’s Nerdy, it’s deep, it’s sexy and extra sweet.

This book was so tense that it made me tense!!! I didn't like a single character but Lilly was absolutely awful and overbearing. I don't understand how she was friends with anyone with the way she behaves.

There was so much animosity that it overpowered anything else. I didn't find it believable that Micah would ever be involved with Lucas and the whole relationship felt forced to me.

Man, I was taken for a ride in the strugglebus with Micah. He was incredibly hard for me to like for about half of this book. He was downright rude and hostile to Lucas for no apparent reason other than his own inability to act like a decent human being. Even when Lucas is openly offering to play nice and make friends, Micah is still running away to whisper with his bestie like a 10 year old. At one point, he even makes Lucas take a separate elevator because he can’t be in the same space with him. Micah was a lot to take, frankly.

HOWEVER, once he wakes up and sees what’s right in front of him? He’s an absolute doll. A confused one, but still. He’s so afraid to take a chance on Lucas. His previous relationship was horrible and he is learning to get past that. Lucas was such a great character. They way he was with his sister was so sweet. He was super sexy with Micah. I really loved everything about him.

The core of this book is very sweet. One man resisting what he thinks he doesn’t deserve and one man doing everything he can to prove the other does deserve it. Watching Micah grow into his own personality and realize he can trust again was very satisfying after the journey he took me on. This book was definitely worth the read and Micah sure did win me over.

3.5 🌟's

This is the second book that I’ve read where I really didn’t like the female best friend.
I found her super-annoying and rude.
When a friend asks you specifically NOT to do something, you don’t do it – you respect their wishes.
I get that she was Micah's friend and he needed that extra push at certain times but sometimes it felt uncomfortable.

Lucas and Micah however, were likeable characters – I found myself liking them more after the first half though.

You can totally get why Micah was so hesitant to start any sort of relationship with anyone.

Their chemistry and steam was also enjoyable.

However, overall, I would say that execution-wise, there was definitely some missed opportunities.

Lucas and Micah ❤️
3 Stars 🌟

Ugh, I struggled with this one, mainly because of Micah.....I could have strangled him at times with his back and forth 😩 I get he had baggage but geeez enough was enough at some points of this book, I felt like Lucas deserved so much better 🤷🏻‍♀️I did however enjoy the ending, I'm still 50/50 on this one tbh.

* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *

The premise of the book is very sweet. One man trying very hard to resist what he believes he doesn't deserve while another tries just as hard to prove that he does.

The characters however fell a little short for me. Not in the sense of being badly written, because they aren't. But in the sense of I can't stand them because of the stuff they do. I couldn't bring myself to like them, root for them or get invested. Not even as far as dislike goes. Regardless of how sweet that premise was.

This was so sweet and at times heart wrenching! Micah & Lucas are absolutely precious and it was beautiful to see them navigate through all the issues that could have kept them apart.

I loved the side characters, both parents and in particular Thalia and Lilly. I could see then become best friends (and seriously they would be a force to be wreckened with 😂)

Looks like it’s a standalone but I’d totally love to see more Nerdy books come out!!

2.5⭐️ Thank you to Joelle Lynne for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I was really excited for this book since its premise was interesting and, from the author’s debut novel, I believed it had a lot of potential. I mean, what is not to like about a steamy romance between nerdy people working in a medical lab? Well, sign me up!

I enjoyed the overall idea of the story and how it get started. Dual POV is fairly common in romance novels and it works well here too. We follow Micah and Lucas from their very first interaction, banter, bickering, kisses, sexy stuff, all the way up to the start of a relationship. Oh, I also appreciate all the loving and, mostly, accepting parents.

I wanted to like the characters in this book, I really did and tried to throughout the whole read, but that was so hard 🥲

I do mostly like Lucas. He’s cool most of the time, cares a lot about his family, is friendly to everyone,…but he’s also very annoying sometimes. He continuously flirting with Micah after he made it clear he didn’t want anything to happen because of their work relationship? This type of insistent behaviour makes me uncomfortable.

Then we have the second MC, Micah…he seemed to be a very good and nice person until Lucas starts working with them. I mean, I guess he’s still ok with everyone else, but he’s a total prick with Lucas. Luca’s flirting aside, Micah was super rude with him most of the time. I get that he fears not being able to resist Lucas’ charm or something like that, but please try keeping it in your pant. Aren’t people capable of focusing on other things besides sex whenever close to an attractive person.

I love stories that include a best friend, and it made me upset that Lilly, Micah’s bf, was insufferable. She may think she has good intentions, but she is not a good friend. When a friend makes it clear that they are not ready to move on, that they don’t want to get involved with certain people, that they don’t want to mix up work and a romantic relationship, or whatever else your supposed best friend tells you, your ‘job’ is to be supportive, be there for them and offer your shoulder for them to cry on or a hug whenever needed. Always be supportive. Lilly is not that friend!

There were somethings that I could understand. Lucas’ teenage sister, Thalia, was going through a harsh treatment and had to live in the hospital where both MCs worked. One of her nurses was a pain and seemed to be mean to her and other patients. Thalia gets suddenly better and can go continue her treatment at after this nurse is no longer in her care. I do not get the motivation there at all. Was she just a bitter woman that would make the lives of sick children worse? I don’t understand at all.

I think my main problem is that the characters are not well developed so, whatever happened to them, I couldn’t bring myself to care enough. Another problem for me was repetition. There were quite a few occasions where repetitive ideas or text would make the reading quite tiring. Despite all that, I still had the urge to continue reading and discover how they would get together.

Being a new author is not easy and I do admire all the work Joelle created in such a short time. I hope more will come out in the near future as potential and ideas aren’t lacking ❤️

The nerd in me HAD to pick up this book!

Micah is a sweet man who’s ex was a piece of trash, mentally abusing him for years. So when he meets Lucas in a nightclub, he’s not sure what to do. His best friend pushes him to dance with Lucas when he asks and they end up sharing a hot kiss on the dance floor. But before anything can happen, Lucas disappears. Imagine Micah’s surprise when the lab tech he needs to train is none other than Lucas.

Lucas moved to the area to be closer to his family, due to his sister being ill. He didn’t expect to meet someone like Micah. Someone who he’s drawn to and would like to get to know better. Micah is resistant to his charms, even when he flirts shamelessly. It’ll take the intervention of Micah’s best friend to get them on the same page.

I really enjoyed this book. What drew me in immediately was the lab talk on the first few pages. It was very interesting and blended very well with the actual story. Micah was sweet, even though he put up a hard act to keep Lucas at arms length. Lucas’s persistence didn’t seem forced and like he wasn’t accepting no for an answer, which I appreciated. He really wanted to get to know Micah and help him with his issues.

The only downside for me was there wasn’t enough exploration into Micah’s past. I would have liked to go a bit deeper into what his ex did, but I understand that can be triggering for some people. Overall, this book is a must read.

If you like hot dance floor kisses, nerd talk about lab slides, a meddlesome, but well meaning best friend and MCs that grow together, pick this book up yesterday!

Y'all this was a sweet fast read. I loved Micah's whole, god he's hot, no I can't have him dealieo. He kinda broke my heart with his body insecurity (been there, still doing that haha). His anxiety about it was really believable. And Lucas, holy heck. He was the sweetest. Teasing Micah around every corner, but also backing off when he realized he needed to. And NEVER poked at Micah's insecurity. Which I really appreciated. He just wanted to help and show Micah he was wanted. I loved how Lucas pushed Micah to be out of his comfort zone. And how Micah changed Lucas' whole world as much. Lilly cracked me up, just instigating all the things and I cackled when the guys were like nopppeeee to her questions. Lots of good funny bits, heartwarming bits, silly shenanigans, and all around a fun time.

Nerdy Talk was seriously fun to read!! Micah is stiff and closed off. I kind of struggled with his character in the beginning but quickly grew to love him. He’s been cheated on and now struggles to accept any new relationship. He meets Lucas one night at a bar and they share a hot kiss, but Lucas leaves. They meet when Lucas hires into the lab that Micah works at and learns that Micah will be his trainer in order to get the promotion he wants. Lucas was another matter, I adored him!! Lucas has uprooted his life in order to be closer to his sister who is in the hospital where Micah and Lucas both work. They had serious chemistry! Great sass, banter and silly puns! Nerdy Talk is a bit angsty but also sweet and left me smiling! I was kept glued to the pages! Overall, a fantastic read. The story was really well written, the pacing flowed nicely, highly recommend.

This was a sweet and fun read with a side of hurt/comfort. Poor Micah is trying to get past a really bad breakup that shook him more than he wants people to know and then he meet Lucas and his carefully ordered world is turned on its side. I loved the sexual tension between the two of them and the healing Lucas helped Micah with. The side characters were great, especially Lilly and Thalia. I happy sighed more than once reading this book and I know I’m going to come back to it when I need a serotonin boost.

2.5 rounded up for cuteness. But jeez Louise Lilly did my head in, as did the bad editing (wrong names, grammar, spelling etc (literally no excuse to spell kiss wrong)). Also loads of missed opportunities in this story, esp around the sister and ex story lines - way too much telling not showing for me.

With every new book I get the certainty that Joelle is an amazing writer.
I really loved how she pictured Micah, all his layers, his insecurities, his frailty... He is reliable, he is one of us.
And Lucas, oh wow, I really appreciated his perseverance and determination to win Micah over, his jokes and his love for his little sister.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Meh

I'm feeling generous with the 3 stars I should've dnfed. First half of the book Micah was like a bratty hormonal teenager his past relationship was not an excuse Lucas deserves better. Second half of the book was pretty much lots of sex.

Nerdy Talk is my favorite Joelle Lynne book to date - and I've read all of them so I feel confident in saying this. The story of Micah and Lucas is simply adorable - from their first high chemistry meeting to the very end, they had me riveted. And my enjoyment of the book had very little to do with the fact that I love coworker romance. I honestly do not know why this is one of my favorite tropes but it is. Maybe its the forced proximity, which Micah and Lucas definitely have a lot of.

Whatever it is, Micah and Lucas have it and it works. From the first, chemistry fille scenes between them to the tense scenes in the lab to the moment they finally give in, the two of them just WORKED. And they had such a fun dynamic between them as well, a give and take that made them feel real combined with individual character histories that fleshed them out.

This book is a sweet romance with great characters and it just left me feeling really happy.

A very sweet romance with science talk, dorky puns, and two men who go from a hot kiss, to coworkers, to friends with benefits, to so much more!
Lucas has just moved to a new town to be closer to his parents and his sister, who is struggling with her health. When he gets a laboratory job and a great hospital, it’s perfect. He’s focused on helping his family, and that’s enough for now. Or it was, until Micah.
Micah has not been lucky in love. After his last relationship fell apart, he’s happy to stick to his microscope and slides instead of finding Mr. Right. But when Mr. Right shows up, he fights against it. He doesn’t want to fall in love again.
I loved Lucas’s tenacity and his absolute refusal to give up Micah. He’s so understanding with Micah’s past and makes such an effort to reassure him. I loved how Micah lets himself trust Lucas, and despite his pain he allows himself to open up. They’re incredibly sweet (and very sexy) together!
Bonus amazing side characters; the moms and Thalia, Lilly, and even Boss Man Martin made for an great supporting cast!

First let me say I’ve got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
I’ve got to say I thoroughly enjoyed this read it wasn’t what I was expecting.
Micah had been hurt big-time by his last boyfriend. So his self-confidence was awful. When is best friend Lilly Comes up to him while he is working late in the lab saying they are going out tonight to wear something nice they are going to a club, he really wants to just go home but he knows that Lilly won’t give up So agrees. Micha thinks a couple of drinks leave it there go home jobs done. But when he gets to the club she is nowhere in sight. He goes to the bar gets a drink and waits for her as she has had a drama at home. The most stunning looking guy that Micha had ever seen came up Beside him to get a drink. Micah cannot take his eyes off him and the guy notices and gives him a wink. The guy is called Lucas and he asks for a dance. Micah isn’t sure what to say but then Lilly comes bouldering in and gives him the look, and look at says get your bum on the dance floor. They dance a few tracks and it soon becomes flirty when Lucas asks for kiss. Micha agrees and before he knows that he’s getting lost in a kiss, but then Lucas just looked at him and says good night and walked off. Leaving Micha totally confused. Micha gets the shock of his life the next day when he’s told he is training a new guy for the lab and it turns out to be Lucas.
Lucas has just returned home to help with his extremely sick sister. She was at the hospital and he was here to give support and help with paying for her treatment. So this job was extremely important to him. But he got the shock of his life when he saw Micha sat in the office. What was it about this guy that kept his Attention. Lucas wasn’t one for boyfriends but he just couldn’t seem to get this guy out of his brain. He tried flirting with him at work but it just seem to annoy Micha. Lucas liked Lilly a lot. It seemed that she wanted Mika and Lucas to work out but what was holding him back?? And did Lucas really want a relationship, or was He just hoping to hook up and get over him??
This book was so good it was a slow Burn don’t get me wrong but it held your attention. There was other things going on like you know Micha is trying to get over this X who just ruined all of his self-confidence And then you’ve got Lucas who is just praying that his little sister reacts well to this treatment. His relationship with her is just beautiful such an innocence.
The chemistry between Micha And Lucas is just electric you can tell that they want each other. The passion that these two share is just uncontrollable it’s like they can’t keep their hands off each other. The air just buzzes around them. I really liked the way that Lucas was really patient with him and listened to his concerns. But also gave him the support that he needed so he could move on. They just make a brilliant couple. What a beautiful read I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

3.5-4 stars

I have incredibly mixed feelings on this book. I wanted to really love it, the blurb drew me in right away as I love all things science (I trained as a scientist originally)

I struggled so hard with the first half of the book though, my problem was I didn't like any of the characters at the start. I know Micah had been through a lot but he was such a child at times and I couldn't connect with him. Lucas, I didn't get either. He knew Micah was clearly uncomfortable with all the flirting and yet he ignored that and carried on invading his personal space, and making Micah even more uncomfortable because he found it 'fun'. That's a nope from me.

The worst was Lilly though, she was awful. No sense of respecting anyone's privacy at all, constantly nosy and pushy, but all because she was 'being a friend'? Nope, if any of my friends, let alone my best friend, behaved like that I'd tell them to take a walk.

All that said, I did get why these people were like that, I just couldn't like them at all. I got so annoyed with Lilly I almost quit but stuck with it and I'm glad I did. Micah has been through a lot and that's not something to take lightly, and it was all dealt with quite sensitively, I thought. Once I got past the initial first half of the book I liked Lucas and Micah's banter, especially when Micah started coming out of his shell and I loved these two together. I loved how supportive Lucas was when Micah needed him, he turned out to be an incredibly caring person once I got past all the inappropriate stuff at the start.

There is also lots of heat between these two, the steam fairly came off the pages once they got together, and once they were together they were super sweet and while I'm not a fan of super-fast declarations, it worked for these two.

In summary, once I got past the first half and on to the story proper, this was a fun, sweet romance between two guys who surely both deserve the happiness they found. I still don't like Lilly though, sorry.

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

🌈 BOOK REVIEWS 🌈

I was honored to have read Joelle's 'Nerdy Talk,' and what a sweet book it was. I just wanted to wrap up Micah in my arms and protect him. He found someone to love only for them to have hurt him almost beyond repair. He hid away in his work and his best friend Lilly. That was until one steamy moment on the dance floor left him reeling.

Enter Lucas, who's starting a new job that happens to be working beside Micah. The adorable tension was to die for and watching Micah's bumbling back and forth was cute... again, I really needed to hug him. But his resistance runs much deeper than that after his previously horrible relationship.

I completely get why Micah was put off by Lucas when they stumble into each other at work. Lucas left Micah suddenly on the dancefloor with no explanations, then Lucas teased him until Micah blew. But after everything he'd been through, I completely get Micah's back and forth and frustrations. When Lucas backs off, the two men can finally meet each other halfway and get to know one another.

Eventually, the two managed to figure things out and find their HEAs.

While Micah was uncertain and struggled, Lucas was a perfect balance for him. He was confident, funny, and sweet. Sure, he may have teased Micah a bit much at first, but I think both of them were good for each other. I loved when Micah finally pushed away from his doubts and allowed himself to be happy again.

A sweet story, with great laughs, and the oh so overbearing, but well-meaning, Lilly.

3.5🌟 I thought this was a cute story. Micah and Lucas have great chemistry and are undeniably super cute and great together by the end.

I just found some tropes and characters annoying which distracted from the story. I didn’t like the best friend - I found her lack of boundaries actually super annoying and not okay after Micah repeatedly tells her no and tries to set his own boundaries. I also found Micah to be very hostile in the beginning without a good reason. I understand being a bit cold or distant but it was a bit much. Once he got over that though I really liked his character.

I find it annoying when characters are like “we need to talk” “we should probably have a conversation about this” and then they never do and just have sex. Like let them develop a bit ya know? It created some parts that were more tell than show. Also, there was no plot other than Micah overcoming his issues from a past relationship. I thought the setting of lab techs could be cute and there would be a project or something in the workplace that they’re doing but it honestly could’ve taken place anywhere. It was a nice concept but I don’t think it was fully developed.

Overall, I enjoyed it! Lucas was a great character and love interest. I really enjoyed his relationship with his sister and he was so adorably into Micah. By the halfway point, the couple is very cute and developing well which helped me enjoy the rest!

Overall, I enjoyed this nerdy, slow burn romance with a good dose of angst between Micah and Lucas.
The two men first meet at a club with a dance and a kiss before Lucas walks away. Of course, when there's a new guy at work that Micah has to train, it turns out to be Lucas. Now, I completely understand why Micah was unsure and reticent about being with or attracted to another man after the way his ex treated him, but it took me a long time to warm up to him because he wasn't great for a good chunk of the book. Pushing him away or being negative but mostly after being drawn together so it was just confusing for Lucas who, for the first time, truly liked someone in the hopes of having something more. Micah's best friend and colleague, Lilly, was rather pushy about getting them together but in the hopes of getting Micah away from the ghost of his ex.
When things do start going right for them, they make for quite the hot couple, Micah surprising the both of them. I liked how things played out from there and their relationship suddenly started to progress. Lucas has got a lovely sister that we occasionally meet as she's ill in the hospital they both work at and that could have possibly played a bigger part in the story, especially with certain things that happen, but it's a good addition to his back story overall.
I enjoyed the other characters, both men's families who clearly want the best for their sons.
A good story with a strong basis for the plot and I liked the work setting. It was definitely fun having Micah having to be the one training Lucas when all he wants is to avoid the other man.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review

Nerdy Talk is an M/M Standalone. Opposites Attract Gay Romance and so much more.
This book was such a surprise and a great one at that. I love Joelle’s books anyway but this one is much different from the others.
It was truly amazing to read. The loved the lab background that’s so different. It was funny, heartwarming, steamy, frustrating at times but that’s face it no one wants a easy ride 😉 there also a great deal of hurt in this book. Micah has not had a great time in a previous relationship and you can honestly feel his pain and why he is the way he is. It would be very difficult to let go and trust again. I found him slightly frustrating at first but then you come to understand him and everything makes sense.
Lucas is so much more the joker and flirt that he makes out to be and he is probably one of the most sweetest people. The things he does tugs at your heart and he’s honestly quite a hero in my eyes.
I loved the ups and downs in this book and everything in between.
An emotionally charged read with great humour. What more could you ask for.
Joelle has absolutely nailed this and it’s not one to miss out on.
A massive 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 that I highly recommend.

I was anxiously waiting Nerdy Talk's release, and I was not disappointed. I am a sucker for nerds. And nerds being flirty and lovey, even better.
This was really fun, set in a hospital lab. Both Lucas and Micah are lab techs, but after a chance encounter before they start working together, things get a little awkward.
Micah is this grumpy, stand-offish guy, except you know it's because he's been hurt and he's trying to protect himself. Even at his worst, I just wanted to hug him
Lucas is the perfect sunshiny flirty boy who is the perfect opposite to Micah. It was really fun watching Lucas pester Micah. Lucas's relationship with his sister is the sweetest thing ever and I adore them.
Lilly, Micah's best friend is pushy and meddling, but a really fun character.
There was so much to lover about this story, but Micah and Lucas- their chemistry, tension, and when they finally give in (HOT!!) Lucas is really great with Micah and they balance each other really well.
I highly recommend Nerdy Talk!

so good!!!

Where to start, where to start….let’s start with the fact that both men are lab techs and are cute as heck. Only Micah doesn’t know Lucas is a lab tech or that he’ll be working with him in the near future, because he meets him in one of his rare forays to a club. He’s sitting at the bar waiting on his bestie Lilly trying to figure out how long is long enough when major hottie Lucas shows up next to him. What’s a shy guy to do? Ugh, I can’t tell you what happens next, just that it’s good. 🫣

Will these two get past Micah’s baggage? Can Lucas help him heal? This book kept me up way too late, don’t start it after 9 pm folks, because you aren’t going to want to put it down. Or maybe that’s just me. I don’t like not knowing what happens next!!! These two guys are super cute. Lucas has the patience of a saint and a huge heart. Would I read this book again? Better believe it! There is something to be said for a happy ever romance that is a smooth ride all the way to the end. 🥰

Micah's ex killed his self-confidence and he just focuses on his work at a medical lab. Then everything changes when Lucas starts and he is so flirty he is both exhausting and makes Micah wonder if he can feel attractive and date again. Lucas's sister Thalia got sick and so became his world - enough that he moved in order to be able to visit and help take care of her. Getting a job in the medical lab meant he had an income and it was easy to put and visit her at the end of his workday. Lucas wants Micah but is not interested in mindless hookups - can he interest him in something more permanent?

I enjoyed this story as it was nice and nerdy with all of the medical lab terminology as well as the focus on their relationship. I loved the way that Lucas was determined to knock down all of Micah's barriers and make sure that he faced the abuse that he had experienced in the past. Micah's friend at the lab was a great character who was brilliant at throwing them together and giving a push at the right time. Easy to read and understand. This is a MM story with mature content.

Carpe diem. Micah, lab tech was emotionally abused by his ex, Mark to the point he was almost irreparably broken. He kept his head down and did his job, ignoring all self care. He suffered a little from social anxiety. Lucas, is sex on wheels! Lucas, notices that Micah is not a temp kinda guy. Lucas, came back to be near his family, especially Thalia, his sister who is sick. Micah is just a bonus. They dance around each other trying to work through the complexity of their lives. The author did an excellent job highlighting the choices people have to make every day just to get through 24 hours. The characters are solid, mature, fun and funny. Micha and Lucas, challenge each other and make each other do the work. Will, Micah be ready to open his heart? Can Lucas take time for himself? Will Thalia get better? Good story. Sweet, nicely done. Lucas and Micah meet at a club. The have a drink and dance, and end the night with an amazing kiss. But Lucas walks away without another word to Micah. The next day Micah is supposed to train someone new and guess who is it?

They have to navigate their attraction to each other while being co-workers. Micah has some relationship phobias because of his ex. And Lucas has a busy family life taking care of his sick sister. Will they be able to get past the co-worker barrier?

This was so engaging I read it in one sitting. These two are so cute together! Micah is such a sweetheart but he’s so broken down from his ex that he doesn’t feel worthy. It makes you feel for him. And Lucas turned out to be a way better character than I thought from the beginning. I thought he was this playboy. But he turned out to be so understanding and caring. And the epilogue was so stinking cute 🥰

Thank you Joelle for writing a fantastic story!!
