The situation is dire for British forces in the Mediterranean, and Commander Nick Everard and his son Jack find themselves in the midst of chaos. Aboard separate ships, the Everards are part of a flotilla patrolling the Aegean. There they face the terrifying bomber attacks of German Stukas as they struggle to save as many of the evacuating troops as possible. But when the order comes for one last lift from Crete, the decimated flotilla must make a suicide run—and only a miracle can save them!
Alexander Fullerton (1924–2008) was a British author of naval and other fiction. Born in 1924 in Suffolk and brought up in France, he was a cadet during the years 1938-1941 at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth from the age of thirteen. He went to sea serving first in the battleship Queen Elizabeth in the Mediterranean, and spent the rest of the war at sea - mostly under it, in submarines.
Fullerton's first novel SURFACE! sold over 500,000 copies. Then he worked on the 9-volume Nicholas Everard series that made his reputation.
Not up to Fullerton's usual standards. To be sure it is a good tale of service on a British destroyer in the early stages of WW II. The determined and sustained attacks by the German Air Force are very well described and are hair raising. But much of the story is weakened by the repetitive descriptions. Beyond that, there isn't much of a story line. The ending was distinctly dissatisfying.
Boys own paper stuff based on the fall of Crete during WW2. Fast pace. all action following the ups and downs of Nick Everard and his half-brother Jack or possibly his son. (You need to follow the series to catch onto this). The hero and his destroyer eventually return to Alexandria cover in glory.
I really enjoy how the author incorporates his characters in his historical fiction. The beginning of WW II was a trying time for the allies, and there were incredible sacrifices made before the tide of war changed in favor of the allies.
I have been meaning to reading the second book in this series, having enjoyed the first book. Book two continues the story of Nick, he has a new ship and his war has moved to the Mediterranean sea. His and his crew battles with the German air force daily. Finally he gets the promotion he has deserved to captain.
I know this story is a work of fiction but the events around it were real. It is so sad that political necessity led to so many lives and ships being lost.
