Every world has its end. With Famine returned and freed of his restraints, Airene must find a way to stop the daemon god from devouring the world — no matter the cost…
The armies of the Avvad, the most powerful empire in the world, have arrived at the walls of Oedija. Despot Jaxas has rallied the city’s meager defenses, but with the Manifest and Underguild still lashing in their death throes, the realm is barely holding strong.
Even facing the destruction of her home, Airene keeps watch for a different threat. Famine, the God of Hunger, has finally broken free of his cage and feasts upon the world. Unfettered, he will consume all life on its surface.
When an unexpected ally appears, Airene and her companions embark on a quest to find a way to stop the daemon god. Racing against time, seeking to stay ahead of both Avvad and Famine, they seek allies and weapons receded into myth.
But no war is won without great sacrifice — and if she is to succeed, Airene must sacrifice all she is…
The enthralling epic fantasy trilogy comes to an end in Requiem of Silence, Book 3 of The Famine Cycle.

J.D.L. Rosell was swept away on a journey when he stepped foot outside his door and into The Hobbit. He hasn't stopped wandering since.
In his writing, he tries to recapture the wonder, adventure, and poignancy that captivated him as a child. His explorations have taken him to worlds set in over twenty novels and six series, which include Dragonforged, Ranger of the Titan Wilds, Legend of Tal, The Runewar Saga, and The Famine Cycle.
When he's not off on a quest, Rosell enjoys his newfound hobby of archery and older pastimes of hiking and landscape photography. But every hobbit returns home, and if you step softly and mind the potatoes, you may glimpse him curled up with his wife and two cats, Zelda and Abenthy, reading a good book or replaying his favorite video games.

This is the 3rd book in the series, I hadn’t read the previous 2 books, but after reading this, I will definitely read them! Requiem of Silence had it all, action, love, commitment, duty, etc., you could really feel the heartache of Airene’s as you read and follow her journey. I was happy of the way it ended. I enjoy J. D. L. Rosell books, and have expanded my genre. I received this book for free and am freely giving my review. I really enjoyed this book!

First thing I want to say is I love the play on words in the three titles of this series. From whispers, to echoes, to silence... a bit ominous in many ways! The story is well-told, of Airene and her 'team' as they make ever-changing plans to battle an ancient enemy. There are places in the book that are very depressing, but hope is never totally lost. A fitting ending to an epic tale.
This book delivered a great conclusion to the series. I highly recommend the entire trilogy, not just this last book. The cover art is pretty cool too. Also, get all of J.D.L. Rosell's books, he is a talented author.
This is a fabulous and epic read, I totally loved it! I was drawn into the story right away with great writing. There is so much to love in this series! A fantastic magical adventure with feeling. Truly Brilliant!
They have reappeared and she needs to stop them for good. It is not going to be easy for her and the cost may be far too much. She knows she will have to take that step to stop them ruining everything around her. A great ending to a great series
This was a great conclusion to the series. The Famine Cycle is a series guaranteed to hold your interest from book 1 to book 3 . Rosell does a great job with character building and story flow.
Fantastic world building the authors ability to keep you wanting more is great there is lag just plenty of action i highly recommend this book and series
An epic finish to an epic saga. The Gods have come to play, and they play for keeps. Humans are just along for the ride. Home now faces many threats, the gods, war and a population that doesn't play well together. Our heroine continues to struggle as she tries to find where she belongs in this mess that faces her homeland. Fortunately she has friends to back her, but she doesn't always treat them as she should. She's too used to going it alone and this requires a team effort - her team. There is non-stop action. There are surprises, there are totally unexpected twists. The humans gain magic, but need to learn how to deal with it. Strange mystical beings abound and must be dealt with.
Read this saga that the author has laid out with all of its nuances and commentary on good and evil. The emotions at the end will wring you out and make you glad you read the entire book.
Airene and her companions continued in the war to defeat famine an protect her brother Linos. When the only way this can be done is to sacrifice herself. Oedija has been desecrated and the rebuilding will take time. But, the obstacles that had to be overcome and the friends that have been lost due to the war was the hardest. Rules have been changed for more freedom within Qedija has been established. The outcome of the series ending was amazing. I enjoyed it tremendously. If you enjoy intense and lots of twist and turns you will enjoy this book. It was hard to put down and sorry to see it ending but it was a great series from beginning to end.
This book is very different to J.D.L.'s other output, probably because it closes off his first series. As with all his books it is well written, enjoyable, consistent, and as fantastic as any fantasy book could be. Once again he has introduced a number of concepts that I have not come across before, such as parallel layers of magical worlds directly above and below the real world with different properties and which those with the appropriate gifts can move between if they are prepared to take the risk.
You can read the book on its own, but you would definitely benefit from reading the series in order. If you can't do that, before reading this book move quickly to the end where he provides a helpful glossary of the peoples and places in the world he is writing about which may make it easier to understand what is going on, and then go back and read the story.
So, what will you find in this book? Gods (good bad and indifferent) returning to the world, warriors, wars, magical wardens, strange tribes at least one of which seems to me somewhat reminiscent of native Americans, goodies and baddies of course, armies, soldiers, healers - everything you could need in a fantasy really.
It is certainly worth a read, and worth more than the four stars I have given it. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I didn't enjoy it quite as much as some of his other work and wanted to reflect that even though it could well be my fault as it is a personal taste thing - I would like to give it 4.8 or 4.9 stars if I could, and there are plenty of perfectly readable fantasy books on Amazon and other platforms that would not even rate a 3 star review so don't let the rating that put you off.
This is a great book, and J.D.L. Rosell is definitely in my top five of the modern breed of fantasy writer. As a result I own most of his output already, and am delighted to add this book to my collection. I recommend you do the same - you just can't go wrong with a J.D.L. Rosell book. I have yet to read anything of his that was less than exceptional, and I expect more great things from him in the future. If he keeps going at this rate, he could easily grow to stand with the greats of fantasy.
At the time of writing the first two books and the prequel novella are all available free on Amazon for a limited time, so if you don't already own any of them yet you can get them all at an unbelievable price - buy one get three free!! The offer cannot last long, so buy now or kick yourself for your foolishness...
Although I own the other books in the series and now own this one too, I used an ARC edition in order to prepare this genuine and unbiased review.
That is a nice cover, to be honest I saw that cover on one website and that dragon looming over the person just drew me in. Really, really nice.
There's this trope in modern fantasy that I think of as 'reverse-Gnosticism' where there's this higher spirit realm that's just inherently dangerous to people. Where people can just try to influence the higher realms if they can but ultimately they're just along for the ride and trying to hang on.
That's what this book made me think of, like Famine, Clepsamammia and Valem are just doing their thing so to speak, they're not malicious or hostile to humanity really, it's just that Famine isn't so much hungry as he is Hunger and Valem's not so much angry as he is Anger. And well, the embodiment of Anger might not be the best next door neighbor.
As far as execution goes, I overall enjoyed the book. The main area that drug it down for me was the number of new terms and places and concepts. Like when I need to keep remembering the difference between Bali ishakas and Qao Fu it hurts the flow of the book.
But I appreciated the main character especially. She was reasonably flawed but had a unwavering insistence that she would do the right thing no matter what which appeals to me.
There was one scene near the end . Which ain't right but it's one of those decisions, I can definitely see how I'd make it but then she suddenly . And I had to set the book down and call her an idiot. What? you couldn't predict that would happen?
But, on balance, I think I prefer a protagonist who makes mistakes and screws up to a protagonist who's always right about everything and always succeeds. So, it felt more like real character flaw than anything derailing the book.
The End....Or is it ? just when you thought the series was complete with the sad ending ....well I guess you'll have to see for yourself ...No Spoilers here. I am an Honest ARC Reviewer this series was kind of hard for me to follow as the names seemed to be more Anime to me (however that's just me possibly). The war without and from within makes this an epic battle that looks as if there is no way to escape total destruction. Airene and her pack battle from everywhere. (You'll See).
Requiem of Silence: An Epic Fantasy Saga (The Famine Cycle #3), my thirteenth read from author J.D.L. Rosell. Well written & enjoyable epic. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. Comparable to Andy Peloquin's Queen of Thieves series, If you like Andy Peloquin you'll probably like J.D.L. Rosell. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Famine is on the rise, Avvad has come to conquer, how can Airene possibly succeed is saving her friends let alone her country and even her world. The cast, the setting are truly remarkable as the tale moves to a colossal climax
