The games continue, this time with a new twist… well, new if you haven’t played a board game in the last 20 years anyway… Amidst all this, the accusations, revelations, and the plotting fly fast and furious. So why don’t I care more?
If The Decagon House Murders, which I was generally very content with, got a shellacking for not having a cast page, you had best believe this even more infrequently published and much lesser manga is going to be in for it for the same cardinal sin.
Look, I get it, serialized work should be read week to week, that’s the intention. But, that’s not how things play out here and there are (easy) ways around it. If I’m reading a lot of shojo (and I am) that can recap its plot and characters, well, a complicated death game should too.
Not that it would help with the fundamental flaw of this series, which I noted in the very first volume - it’s not especially well written. At all. And when the death games aren’t progressing with much oomph, well, what are you left with exactly? People with weird headgear, that’s what.
The new game is Mafia/Werewolf, essentially, just tweaked slightly so you want certain people picked for certain roles at the end. There’s also a seer who knows the roles, which is straight out of Werewolf, who feels like a no-brainer role since in this version they can’t really get taken out of play for being too knowledgeable.
So, this doesn’t hang together well, frankly, although I do like that somebody has taken the typically useful strategy of claiming they’re a particular role and then railroading the conversation. Shy talkers need not apply. Still, it also boils down to you watching a game being played that you might have done so yourself. Which is probably as interesting as it sounds.
There are decent elements to this story - there’s one ‘how did they do that’ that has a very simple but very logical explanation, which I appreciated. But it’s up against a lot of nonsense - that might be the most easily handled and cleanly severed head in recorded history given how fresh that decapitation was.
If you want a full volume of people yelling at each other and turning on one another, this is perfectly fine. I think my patience with this has started to run a little thin and with my hard-earned money invested in every manga I pick up, I’m not so sure this merits continuing.
It’s certainly what you want out of the genre, just not as good. If people are playing games like this, it should be more exciting, but nobody here is very interesting or well defined. Cop guy and trucker hat and bucket head about covers it.
Revelations that should have real shock value come and go with the impotent impact of a whiffle ball made from meringue. If you can’t make me care what happens to anybody involved, there’s probably a problem on your side when this is one of my favourite sub-genres to just kick back and enjoy.
2 stars - 2.5 if I was really generous, but even the parts I didn’t hate don’t warrant much more than a shrug because I don’t have anything invested in these characters. It’ll probably have to be a really slow week when volume 4 comes out to get me back for another round with this bunch.
I loved seeing some main game scenes!! I also notice more differences now, the manga is SLIGHTLY straying from the game (source material) but theres nothing plot-changing that will ruin anything so I'm okay with that for now! Absolutely hated the bath scene tho. The women/girls were super sexualized while the men/boys were just chilling :/ They also added a scene with Miley joining them in the bath? The whole thing was weird.. Rest of it was perfect (except for yet another Nao ass-shot with.. extra details), I would normally rate YTTD mangas with 5 stars, but I am removing one because of these scenes I just mentioned ^^'
I do highly recommend everyone to play the game! It'll be released on Steam pretty soon! But it's free online for anyone to play already if you can't wait <3

Eh, this is where the manga lost me a bit as an adaptation. The Main Game scenes are such a highlight of the game story, and too much of that intrigue is lost once it’s put on paper like this. It tries its hardest to make all the debating seem as interesting as possible, but nothing beats the in-game moments of questioning people yourself and refuting other’s points. The earlier volumes covering the adventure game segments were able to get away with glossing over details not critical to the main plot since so much of it was pretty straightforward (just describing the various puzzles and escape rooms the characters encountered), but that same luxury can’t be afforded for the Main Game segments where every single conversation is crucial to furthering the story and its sense of tension and mystery. The main points are still covered, and to anyone not interested in playing the game I would still recommend continuing, but I found myself just wanting to go back and replay that segment of the game while reading this volume.
Also, the bonus chapter here had some extremely unwarranted fan servicey scenes between the female characters (a couple of whom are minors) which definitely contributed to my overall dislike of this volume.
We finally reach the start of the first Main Game, and everyone's getting themselves into conflicts. This volume is closer to canon than the other two have been, but still strays far enough away to be considered its own story outright.
This volume lost a star from me because of the bonus scene where the characters are bathing to take a break. Considering most of the girls in Your Turn To Die are underage in both the UK and Japan (Sara is 17, Nao is 19 - legal age in Japan is 20, Reko is 23 and Kanna is 14) this scene makes for uncomfortable reading. Though, I have to admit, reading Hoemi/Miley yell "No same-sex hanky-panky on my watch!!" was amusing. Thank goodness it was only a few pages long lol.
Despite that, this manga was very good and I can't wait to see how the rest of the main game goes :)
There was just enough to get me to finish but it was pretty boring overall. It's a lot of twists and turns and secret reveals with no real substance. There was also no action or scene changes, just one long discussion for the sake of being edgey and mysterious.
Of course as somebody who has enjoyed the previous two volumes of this Manga, decided to read the third one. I am really enjoying it and I love the little extra of the bathhouse at the very end! Would really recommend!
This is absolutely AWESOMESAUCE!!! I love this serious so much, it makes me wanna sob my eyes out! It's a lot like Danganronpa but different at the same time! I'm glad they didn't do Shin dirty in the cover art like they did Keiji. I can't wait for the next chapter! I don't like the hot tub scene though. It's good overall thought! Also, Shin CARRIED this series. I mean CARRIED. I would have not played this game if Shin wasn't there. Might have played for Keiji but that's it. Besides Keiji and Reko, Shin solos!!!
Character relationships feel unrealistic, like Sara trusting Keiji, especially since in the manga version, we barely get to learn about the characters’ personalities besides their surface-level traits.
They’re really trying to get the reader to like this Joe character. Hmmm, I wonder if they’re going to kill him off for a a dramatic plot twist 🫢🫠 (aka the writing sucks)
What I’ve learned with Your Turn to Die, Danganronpa, and Angels of Death is that if a story is originally a game, the manga version is going to suck.
The tensions are high in this volume. The votes have begun and everyone is trying to determine who deserves to be on the chopping block while keeping some key roles for their survival in mind. The world building has progressively gotten better as we progress with each manga.
As the title would suggest there should be some DEATH; however, at the conclusion of this volume, there hasn’t been much (2 total). GIVE ME MORE
This volume was relatively slow paced but maintained a good level of doubly layered tension—one from the secrets kept by the players, and another from the baseline of that particular death game where no matter what you do, 2+ people will die.
