A Witch in Wolf Wood #5

Charmed and Dangerous

Rate this book
After battling witches, werewolves, and a crazy one-eyed rougarou with a vendetta, starting a business making magical charms should be easy.

At least, that’s what Morgen Keller thought.

But now she’s leased a haunted building, her cousin is dating the town’s scheming mayor, and Amar—a.k.a. the handsome werewolf she’s been dating—is embroiled in what could be the final showdown between two rival werewolf packs.

If his pack doesn’t come out on top, she could lose her lover, her business partner, and the only guy willing to catch mice for her snooty owl familiar.

Why did Morgen ever think life in the small town of Bellrock would be simple?

Morgen (the witch) and Amar (the werewolf) do battle with other witches, werewolves and ghosts while trying to end a curse on a haunted tannery.

Charmed & Dangerous is an entertaining conclusion to the series. It's like an '80s one-hit-wonder ... you kind of know there isn't much to it but it's fun and while it lasts enjoyable.

I have loved and treasured the Witch in Wolf Wood series so much because of its uniqueness. The heroine is not some Twenty year old perfect body woman but a forty year old divorcée, Morgen, who is learning who she is and why she is capable of!

Unfortunately, “Charmed and Dangerous” is the final book in the series for now and there is still so many great adventures that could be written for Morgen, Amar and now their son. This installment introduces us to more of Morgen’s family. Her overprotective brothers, their wives and her ex husband have discovered her belief in magic and have come to visit for an intervention. Of course, Morgen has just discovered that she is pregnant and she and Amat are negotiating what is the proper food for her to eat.

Mayor Unger is at it again trying to intimidate Morgen over the taxes on her property. He is also interested in Morgen’s cousin, Zoe. Morgen takes out a two year lease on an historic old building that is rumored to be cursed by a ghost only to discover it is true. The Loups are also causing problems for Morgen and she will get assistance from the least likely source!

I live this series and truly loathe that it is going away. So much so that I am going to do
something that I hardly ever do which is write the author. There aren’t enough good books written about mature women and there is definitely a market for it. While new series are always welcome we shouldn’t rush to dispose of existing series in order to move on. Ms. Buroker admitted that this series was originally meant to be a standalone single book but it begged to be extended. I say, it still does. I hope she hears me!!!!!

Charmed and Dangerous is the fifth and so far last book in this series and I was sad to see it end after binge listening to this series over the course or the last two months. I really like the characters and the story. This book was a good wrap up for the series, although it leaves things open enough if the author ever would decide to write more, which she mentioned she might in the author note at the end of the book.

Charmed and Dangerous nicely builds upon plot lines from previous books. Morgan is working to start her new business with Amar and they run into troubles with the building they're leasing as it turns out to be haunted. The Loop pack is not so happy with the Lobo's and the tension is rising. Morgan's brothers are concerned when they hear about her witchy ways. Amar and Morgan's romance is going well, but they have another bit of conflict to overcome. So there is plenty going on. It all made for an engaging read and I was happy to see how it all got wrapped up. All the familiar characters from previous books are there again as well. This book was a satisfying conclusion to the series.

This book had a few plot points that weren't my favorites, like the family drama and a small bit of conflict in the otherwise well going romance. And then there was the haunted building, after just reading two books with a haunted building recently I wasn't as excited about another haunted building plot line. Although surprisingly all 3 of the books I read with haunted buildings got resolved very differently, so that was good.

I liked reading about Amar and Morgan starting their new business, especially the prologue was great in showing how their business is doing. I enjoyed seeing Amar and Morgan further their relationship and how they work together and feel like a solid couple in this book. I also liked how Shaun and Wendy made some appearances again as well as cousin Zoey and Morgan's mentor Phoebe. I enjoyed listening to this one and the narrator is just perfect for Lindsay Buroker's books.

To summarize: This was a satisfying conclusion to the series and I was sad to see the series end. There are plenty of things going on in this book and some ongoing plot lines get wrapped up as well as a new plot for this book surrounding the building Morgan leased that turns out to be haunted. I liked reading more about the familiar characters and I liked seeing how Morgan and Amar's relationship was going. There were a few plot points with the family drama as well as a bit of conflict in the romance I didn't care for, but they didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the book too much. It also was the third book I read recently with a haunted building, but I liked how all of them had a different resolution to the problem. I really enjoyed listening to this series and can definitely recommend it if you're looking for an easy to read urban fantasy series.

It was a nice ending to the series, but I wish there were more books.

I'd love to see the series continue but maybe centered on Wendy and her adorable ferret familiar Napoleon. Or with Sian as a main character, I would have love to see her get a familiar, develop her magic more and so how the relationship evolves with the Werewolf vet.

fun modern fantasy with adult main character

This series is great with fun and relatable characters. What really resonated with me is that the main character is 40. I love fantasy books and especially urban fantasy but it gets old reading about a bunch of 17 year olds all the time. This series is fun and it’s about a young 40 year old!!

It's kind of weird that KU let me download this book seeing as the publication date is the listed as April 30th on GR. Apparently the publication date in April 9th on Amazon. I'm not complaining though. This series has kept me entertained while being sick in bed.

Once again, wasn’t really interested in anything that happened in this instalment. Disappointing since I actually liked Book 4. This one went back to the same old formula of far too many things happening at once.

- Morgen was suddenly pregnant? For some reason?? At almost 41???
- Zoe was really, really annoying. All she cared about was objectifying werewolves and pursuing a man who clearly has it out for Morgen
- There was a ghost…not a very good one.
- Things finally came to a head with the Loups but it wasn’t very interesting. It just consisted of them doing a lot of loitering.
- Morgen’s family visits because they disapprove of her new lifestyle. Real judgemental people. Especially because throughout the series we’re told that her brothers don’t really bother with her much.

This was a theme for this entire series, too many things happening at once in each book. There were always 3-4 storylines happening simultaneously. It was just really chaotic and not in a good way. Plus, the characters weren’t exactly charming. I don’t know, I really question the purpose of this series. I’ve read a lot Lindsay Buroker’s books and they usually have an overarching purpose - this seemed to be missing here.

Overall, this was a cute series. Not perfect, but still fun and easy to read. I have probably rated "better" books 3-4 stars, but this met every expectation I was looking for in a series. Very much a right time, right place series.

Probably my biggest gripe throughout the whole series was her being a vegetarian. To clarify, first off, I have zero qualms with her actually being vegetarian. However, in the first book it is made to seem that her transition was fairly recent and was strictly for health reasons, not for moral reasons. But throughout the series, comments in regards to her decision to move to a vegetarian diet often seemed like it was at least in part due to morality of butchering animals. It just kind of bugged me. Well, that and her sometimes poor decision making skills. But none of it was a deal breaker. I still liked Morgen and liked Amar. Zoe, I'm not so sure about her. Wendy I've grown to like and Sian is definitely an interesting character as is Doc. Maybe we'll see more of these guys in the future. I would definitely read more of the stories set near Wolf Wood.

I loved this series. It's a very well written slowburn romance with great characters and outloud laughs. You must get past the first book to get into it and see the story progress. I'm sad to see this was the last book.

In general this book feels disjointed and kind of write-by-numbers. Morgen is facing a giant tax bill due in one month, so she… decides to lease a giant commercial space she doesn’t actually need to make the charms that she needs to sell to pay the tax bill? Like, wouldn’t the sensible thing be to wait on real estate until you’ve actually sold some product? Anyway, she’s feeling nauseous so you can guess what the answer is - yep, she’s pregnant. Her brothers show up to try and... well, Morgen isn't sure what they want to do, but she spends half the book worrying on no evidence that they're going to have her institutionalized against her will. It's not a regency romance novel, Morgen. It doesn't work that way. I'm not a fan of the "protagonist's entire family show up and treat her like a crazy person for most of the book and the protagonist isn't able to convince them otherwise until the very end for Reasons." Morgen literally has a house full of werewolves and witchcraft but Buroker keeps pulling out plot devices to ensure that nobody thinks she's sane until it's time to wrap up the book. Additionally, Morgen's brothers bring her ex-husband up with them - despite their conviction that his divorcing her caused a mental break - which seems cruel and inappropriate, not "mildly embarrassing for Morgen" (which is how the book treats it).

In the meantime, Buroker continues to have characters threatened with rape while refusing to use the words "rape" or "sexual assault." At this point I can only think that Buroker doesn't want to use the words for fear of triggering Amazon's weird algorithms, but if you're not comfortable using the words "sexual assault" or "rape" in your books, then you need to not feature sexual assault or rape in your books. Especially when the books are light, humorous fiction, bringing in threatened or actual sexual assault repeatedly is something an author should take seriously - and referring to it repeatedly as "sex" does not read as "taking it seriously." Particularly given that all of these exchanges happen between witches and werewolves, it would just not be difficult to explain, e.g., that they hate each other SO much they just want to kill each other, and witches think sex with a werewolf is bestiality and werewolves think witches all smell disgusting.

While we're on that subject, (further ranting) Most of this feels like thoughtlessness rather than malice, but I really wish the author just... wouldn't. Combined with the really vague structure of the plot in this one, it takes it down to two stars. Buroker is a good writer but this is my least favorite series of hers thus far.

Excellent series I hope there will be more

Charmed and Dangerous: A Witch in Wolf Wood is the fifth installment in Lindsay Buroker's captivating series. This book, like its predecessors, continues to deliver an excellent reading experience with its well-developed characters and engaging storyline.

One of the standout aspects of this series is the remarkable character development. Buroker has a talent for crafting relatable and complex characters that truly come to life on the pages. In this book, the characters continue to evolve, revealing new layers and motivations that deepen the reader's connection to them. The protagonist, in particular, undergoes significant growth, making her journey all the more compelling.

The storyline in Charmed and Dangerous: A Witch in Wolf Wood is gripping and full of suspense. Buroker skillfully weaves together various plot threads, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The pacing is well-balanced, ensuring that the story moves along at an engaging speed without feeling rushed. It's worth mentioning that the book is so engrossing that it becomes difficult to put down, even when other responsibilities beckon.

Buroker's writing style is fluid and accessible, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in the world she has created. The author's attention to detail is commendable, as she paints vivid scenes and environments that enhance the overall reading experience.

Overall, Charmed and Dangerous: A Witch in Wolf Wood is a fantastic addition to an already excellent series. Lindsay Buroker continues to deliver a compelling narrative with well-rounded characters and an engaging plot. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys immersive and captivating stories.

Another book by this author that got me in trouble. Why? Because I came back from my lunch break late and stayed up MUCH too late reading it. This is one of those books I just couldn't put down.

This is an urban fantasy with a slow burn romance.

Pros:
Characters are well developed. I really felt I "knew" the characters and their personalities.
You know a book is good when you are thinking about it at odd moments, and even dream about it.
The editing is very well done. No grammar or punctuation errors that took me out of the story.
The story is paced well and kept me wanting to go on to the next chapter.
The story line is unique. No borrowing from other authors.
The characters don't just accept the magic without questioning it. They have to overcome their disbelief.
The main character doesn't go from not knowing magic exists to suddenly being able to wield it and be the most powerful. She has to learn and develop her abilities.
I loved the quirkiness of the characters.

Cons:
This is (supposedly) the last book in the series but I'm not ready to let the story or characters go yet.

I love this author's books. It's gotten to the point where I don't even look at the descriptions or reviews of her books anymore. I know I'm going to like anything she's written, so I just buy every book as soon as it comes out. I recommend ALL her books/series.

I also recommend her books under her alter ego, Ruby Lionsdrake. Those books are STEAMY!!

The last book in A Witch in Wolf Wood series – well it had some surprises!

We’ve heard mention of Morgan’s brothers/family throughout the series, so it was only fitting that they come for a visit, but, they brough Morgan’s ex-husband along. The brothers and their wives have a motive for their visit – getting Morgan to move back home to Seattle and to regain her sanity. By the end of the book, I think they may have also been questioning their own sanity! Lol

This was such a fun series! I loved the antics between Morgan and Amar. I loved Sian and her dry humor and Morgan’s snarky side. I was very happy to see Morgan gain some insight into her grandmother and her motivation for leaving her the house and her witch goodies.

I’m not going to talk about the story itself because there are too many spoilers and I want anyone thinking of reading to encounter these first hand. I will say that were there other books written into this series or with these characters, I would read them in a heartbeat! I’m going to search out more books by this author and see if they are just as much fun.

If you like stories with not-so-perfect witches, werewolves, and the normal noisiness of small towns, give this series a try. Keep in mind that the first book is good, but not the best of the series. In my opinion, they just keep getting better!!

As always with Burokers books I got really invested in the characters
It’s a nice ending to the series but I wouldn’t mind some more adventures with the crew
The best part is undoubtedly the character building, even if the manly man and quirky independent female routine is clearly a Buroker MO. I enjoyed them again so there aren’t.complaints from me.

I love Burokers writing style, clearly not my first Buroker series though so again no surprise there. However I forgot how witty Buroker is and I kept chuckling at the dry sense of humor! Even in of middle of some dire moments! Somehow Buroker balances action, ,solid world building and decent storyline with humor and some thoughtful depths, which is what I adore about her books

Charmed and Dangerous is currently the last book in the series and it definitely is the tie up all ends and add a bow installment. Things were resolved to my satisfaction, though the situation with the packs felt a wee bit too convenient
It took me a little while to get hooked in the series, I found some of the earlier installments a little to slow, I was reeled in and wouldn’t mind some more books with the crew.

It’d a wonderful PNR with strong character and solid world building, the romance is slow burn with blend out smut.

This series has been a fun, easy listen for me.

I did listen to books 2 through 5 one after the other. The storyline has kept moving forward with each book picking up shortly after the previous one.

This whole series as been about Morgen finding herself. She inherits her grandmother's home and learns so much about herself in the process of figuring out who her grandmother was too. She really needed to experience life differently after losing her job and her husband divorcing her. And, this is a lot different from "normal" life styles.

This book is about Morgen finding a way to earn money with her new found gifts of being a witch. However there's still an "enemy" out there after Morgen. Along with Morgen's building for her business being haunted or cursed, or both?

We get to see a conclusion with the pack rivalry in this book. And a few people in town who aren't fans of Morgen's...we'll see something come of them too. But what about Olivia? That woman is a problem. Is that really solved here? Mmm.

But the way life goes for Morgen, I'm happy with where she ends up. She seems happy here at her grandmother's old home, now her home. This is her place to be. She has quirky friends and so much more.

Morgan's faced off against plenty since she came to town and there's still more heading in her direction. Between the mayor gunning to take her down via tax bills and legalities and the rival werewolf pack looking to take out Amar and his pack and the rogue witches trying to stick it to Morgan good, she's got a lot on her plate.

And that's before her family shows up to stage an intervention. Well, it's not actually an intervention. It's more of a "what the heck to you mean you're a witch?" And a "you'd be much happier back home." (To be honest, they probably would have had more success with this if they'd left the ex back home. I mean, who needs closure with the guy who didn't rev Morgan's engine when she has her own hunk of a werewolf warming her bed at night, amirite?!?!)

A haunted building, a concerned family, a lot of snarling and nudity (from the werewolves, mind you!), and a lady who's finally found her place in all the magical craziness. I'm sad to see the end of Morgan and Amar's adventures, but what a ride! *thumbs up*

Another fun entry in the Witch in Wolf Wood series, this one has Morgen leasing a building in town to sell her flea and tick charms and Amar’s cat trees, and finding it not only haunted but cursed. Also, her cousin Zoe has arrived in town looking for a hunky werewolf to “date,” and it appears Mayor Unger is the one she decides to become involved with, even though he’s allied with the Lobo’s enemies, the Loups. The two werewolf packs are heading for a confrontation, since it seems two packs in one town is one too many. And of course there are some personal changes happening in Morgen’s life, all while her three brothers and their wives come to town to talk some sense into her and get her to come home. Phew, as always there’s lots going on, and with danger, humor, romance and magic, the story careens along to a fun conclusion, which ends this series of five books. Who knows, maybe the author will revisit this world in the future, I would certainly be happy to read about Morgen, Amar and their quirky town of Bellrock again.

A slow start but finished good

I had a hard time getting into the book as it was a bit slow , not much going on, than the series normally has. This one is a bit short, BUT its book 5 and she has managed to keep LOL parts in the book, along with action/adventure AND she keeps the power levels believable. (I really hate it with scifi/fantasy how the main character is all powerful and never needs help or no one can top em or all guys/gals want them) that's not this series n its enjoyable read. I'd give 3.5 if I could. A star gone because they shortened the story so much, your can tell when an editor goes too far, and half for slow start. I would read #6 but I think she left the ending the way she did to stop this adventure, but let it opened enough she could continue if wanted. Try it, its free on prime, short read n I bet you'll lol at least once...if you don't, then you don't get dogs/animals and their pet peoples.

One of the main things I like about Lindsay's books is the characters, which are always brimming with personality, couple this with the lively interaction that takes place between them, and plots that are imaginative, compelling and totally engaging, and you are guaranteed an entertaining and absorbing read, which this series has been for start to finish.

This time around Morgen has to deal with ghosts and curses while trying to start a new business with Amar selling his woodworking projects, including the popular cat condos, and her amulets and charms. Things also come to a head with the Loup's, just when she has a visit from members of her family.

This is an excellent conclusion to the series, with a satisfying ending that also leaves open the possibility for future adventures, which I would certainly welcome.

please continue the series

I love this series. This book scores a 3 because every other line was about sex, having sex, thinking of sex, nudity, propositions, suggestions, etc. I felt it was over the top and unlike the other 4 books. Others may feel it was entertaining, even though there was only fade FROM black scenes? I didn’t mind the lack of actual sex scenes, but i could stand for more plot and action and less sex talk.

I do want to see more about the town and supporting characters. Siam cracks me up, Wendy could be a story or two, Zoe….. she is a hot mess. Phoebe has a story I’m sure…. Lots of places this could go and the new turn Morgans vision took could be further explored…. My humble options are my own and may not represent the masses, but there you have it 😀

Exciting action-packed conclusion

Morgen faced so many impossible obstacles distracting her goal to achieve success and to be accepted into her inherited witch community complete with warring werewolves and a haunted, cursed building where she planned to establish her new business. She not only had to learn the spells of how to overcome the last century bewitching while was dealing with her family’s negative criticism and judgment, but she was also coping with her relationship and an additional family member. Charmed and Dangerous was an exciting and action-packed conclusion to the A Witch in Wolf Wood Series. I would love to revisit the series at a later time to check on how Morgen and Amar have made Bellrock their home.

Interesting, fresh and enjoyable series

Am so happy with the book and the whole series. Lindsay Buroker brought an interesting and different world, logical and enjoyable different characters and the atmosphere that change may be difficult but still possible. Antics, wit and spellbinding storyline as well. Did listen to the whole series in a short time and felt like I was watching the story unfold in front of my eyes. The only fault I found with the whole of the five books was that the heroine is often a bit too forgiving for my taste. As it is irritating, I do understand that levelheadedness may be the right approach to solve the problems in the story world. Grrr! Hope we will get more books in this series. And maybe the heroine snapping at someone? Just once?

What with their most dangerous enemy, the rougarou, dead, at long last, life should be relatively easy now in Bellrock for Amar and Morgen.
But it does not take away Morgen's lack of income so far. Which might be why Morgen is now keen to open a shop of her own.
That is exactly where trouble in Paradise actually struck.
With the place itself, tax that has to paid i.r.o of her house, with the cousin, Zoe, eying the smirking mayor, with the other werewolf group insisting that her intended shop be demolished and her three brothers and their wife's rocking up as they reckon she lost her sanity.
Hmmm.
Could that be all? No?
Once again the pressure is rather tense and never really seems to relax one little bit in Charmed and Dangerous.
Actually well titled too.
Enjoy.

I love this series!!

This series has a lot of witches, magic, mayhem and of course werewolves! The lead characters are Morgen and Amar, Morgen inherited a farm and lots of woods from estranged grandmother, Amar was living in the barn. Surprise!! He is also a werewolf. Morgen, newly divorced and having had lost her job as a programmer decided to move to the farm and supposed bucolic little town of Bellrock. Boy! Was Morgen in for a surprise, its magic and mayhem for days. I hope you read the series and enjoy it as much as I did. Many times I found myself laughing out loud at the antics the characters get up to. Happy Reading!!

Charmed and Dangerous

I was a little skeptical about reading a book about werewolves and witches, but as usual you had me hooked after reading the first book. I have to say it was bitter sweet having to read the last book. I thoroughly enjoyed every book (and I have read them all) that you have written. Your writing is very clever and precise and your editors do a beautiful job. I have read some that I didn't know where I was in the book because the editing was so shoddy. I'm always on the same page with your books. I don't know how many books (series) you have written but my adventure began with Secarius. Thank you Lindsay Buroker's for so many hours of entertainment.

“You are my witch and I am am your wolf”. Waiting for them to consummate their relationship as they fight of the Loupes, was fun but now she suffers the consequences of a viral man and a family they will
become. Wendy, Sian, the Lobos all try to convince Morgan’s brothers that she is a witch and there are other magical Beings in Wolf Woods. The deputy is hilarious. The vet smitten with a woman who doesn’t want a physical relationship. I adore Amar but wouldn’t eat organs even though I am a carnivore lol. I really like Morgan’s new life and like that she has made a “witch niche” for herself.

4.5 stars

A hectic (in the entertaining way) and satisfying conclusion to a series that I found really entertaining. Like the rest of the series this was just the right length and never a dull moment. Some parts were genuinely creepy and the family stuff was so stressful! There were really two major conflicts going on here and though one of them was far more potentially lethal I was equally stressed out over both which is great writing.

Overall I really did just have a lot of fun with this entire series and this was a great way to wrap it up and bring a lot of things full circle, some of them in a way I didn't even realize I needed. Very fun.

I loved having a 40 something year old protagonist after reading series after series with teenagers. And this time she actually looked 40 unlike Val in death before dragons.
The end was wrapped in a nice neat bow. Wish we could’ve seen the vet take revenge on Olivia for her crimes against him.
As a nudist I loved that nudity was built into the werewolves and witches powers, legit so funny.

Seeing a theme of loyalty being the foundation of secure romantic attachment in Buroker’s books, normally I like it but I feel like Morgan and Amar’s relationship was only that? I wasn’t sold on what attracted them together besides looks and loyalty.

A very fun and fulfilling end to the series. A long-time foe becomes a friend of sorts. We get Sian and plenty of Zoe. The witches have taken a back seat as that's mainly been resolved. Finally a resolution with the rival wolf pack as well. Valderas again speaks from the heart on atrocities committed against him. Plenty of fun food humor again as Morgen's diet goes against...everyone else's. She has big news, early on, and tells Amar up front fortunately. It's sweet, as is their relationship. I appreciate the epilogue ending and that all the characters stayed true to their original selves at the end.

That family ambush though, ack!

Werewolves, Witches and Magic...what could go wrong?

When an introverted data programmer gets dumped by her boring husband and inherits her grandmother's house in the woods, you can be assured there will be questions and surprises. Beginning with an enormous wolf landing on her car's hood to discovering her dearly departed grandma had a secret life as a powerful witch the story unfolds in the most interesting fashion.
This is one series guaranteed to keep you spellbound and captivated from beginning to end.
