The One Inside is a self-guided way to strengthen the connection between your Self and the competing parts inside of you, the parts of you who battle and cause tension, uncertainty, and anxiety. With just one word a day for 30 days, you'll walk through a self-reflective process that guides you back to your true center. Using a succinct, easy-to-approach style, Tammy Sollenberger's The One Inside guides you through the clinically proven Internal Family Systems method of achieving internal harmony. Whether you'd like to become more emotionally aware, feel overwhelmed by seemingly conflicting parts if the self, or often feel stressed by indecision, The One Inside can help you access your own inner wisdom--and your most authentic self.
The One Inside by Tammy Sollenberger informs the reader of a unique approach to everyday mindfulness using the Internal Family Systems. This model helps one to understand that there are multiple moving “parts” that exist apart from the one central “self,” and these complicated parts are what cause anxiety, tension, and other negative emotions. When these parts conflict with each other, they result in internal distress or outward aggression.
I loved that this book sheds light on the fact that negative self-talk comes from one part of yourself, such as your inner critic or your protector, and does not represent the “self” as a whole. With this information comes the understanding that one needs to take a step back and recognize their separate parts before immediately blaming themselves for every mistake they make. By better understanding all one’s different parts, distress can be mitigated. For example, if a person is angry, they can begin to see from where that anger may be coming. The way The One Inside delves into the nuances of the human psyche is incredibly refreshing.
Tammy Sollenberger’s personal voice can continually be heard throughout the entirety of this book. While some books in the self-help category may be bogged down with scientific language or advice that appears out of touch with the audience, Sollenberger’s anecdotes are always relatable to the general audience. With every day and every new piece of advice, the reader is better able to connect with the message when Sollenberger recounts her own experience with her “self” and her different “parts.” The One Inside made me much more willing to follow through with the tasks instead of giving up.
Furthermore, this book provides not just a word and description to guide oneself through the day, but it also includes an extra activity for more connection that is very helpful in the journey on the way to fully understanding one’s internal systems. On those days when it can be hard to read the words on the page and fully connect to them, the activity that Sollenberger provided gave me
much more clarity. The inclusion of images to describe different concepts, such as showing how the “self” is often affected by its separate “parts” throughout the various days, helped my understanding of the book even more. All in all, I never felt confused or uncertain on this journey, despite the fact that the Internal Family Systems offers a new outlook on life and your self-image. This book made the transition from my old way of thinking to this new one completely seamless.
While there are numerous aspects of this book that I enjoyed, I have to say my very favorite part of The One Inside was the way Sollenberger encourages the reader from the outset to view themselves and all their parts with understanding and compassion. In the past, I have struggled with looking at myself with criticism. I have always been aware that I have conflicting views of myself and that my inner dialogue isn’t always kind, but I have never been given a solid solution to this persistent problem. Not only did The One Inside present me with an answer to why this criticism was present, I also realize now that it was just my parts trying to protect me from judgment or embarrassment. My separate parts, such as my critic or my “firefighter,” may have hurt me in the past, but they only seek to help me in the ways that they see fit. In the end, these parts are still connected to my central “self,” and there is no getting rid of them. The best thing is to find harmony and balance with these parts, and that’s exactly what The One Inside shows you how to do.
The One Inside is a book that anyone can quickly pick up and apply to their lives, changing their self-image in just a short 30 days. The advice in this book is invaluable, and I would recommend it to any and all!
The One Inside: 30 Days to Your Authentic Self is a guidebook aimed at helping readers rediscover their "Inner Self" in thirty days. Though I had never been educated on Internal Family Systems, the Inner Self, or even the ideas of harmony and self-discovery as a general idea, I found The One Inside to be exciting, informative, and eye-opening.
This book is full of elements that are not just fun but make the reading more accessible; each of the three "phases" of The One Inside includes graphics such as charts and icons that enhance the reading experience and are not distracting. The end of each "day" also features a section called "For More Connection Today," which allows readers to conduct their own self-discovery through different prompts through journaling or inner reflection, for example.
I thought that the best part of The One Inside, though, was the fact that this book was informative and engaging. I found it impressive how much research must have been done to write each and every section of this book. I learned so much about the Inner Self and Internal Family Systems - two topics I knew nothing about beforehand - all because the The One Inside was so easy to read. That's not to say it was a simple read - it is hard to call The One Inside "simple" when there was so much information that seeped through every day's entry of this book.
This book is worth reading if you don't know anything about the Inner Self, and I'd say it's worth reading even if you do.
Tammy Scollenberger's voice in The One Inside; 30 Days to Your Authentic Self is soothing, soft, authentic, caring, and curious. Throughout, she models self-leadership while welcoming others to join her on this journey compassionately and with patience. This book reads like a series of daily IFS meditations that you can return to again and again in no particular sequence. Great deepening practice for anyone on a personal development journey either in IFS self-help exploration, in combination with coaching, or alongside therapy. I definitely recommend this book for quick, accessible, and meaningful practices for sustainable self-care on your wellness journey. Inspiring, sincere, powerful, and heart-centered.
This book just didn't do it for me. I've already read IFS Therapy by Richard Schwartz and Self-Therapy by Jay Earley. Maybe that was my problem. This book added nothing new to my understanding, nor did I find any of the daily prompts that helpful. I DNFd this book last year, and thought this year I'd give it a try and really read the whole thing. This book was basically about Tammy's parts and her internal monologue.
I really loved The One Inside: 30 Days to Your Authentic Self. I found it to be a great introduction to IFS, and it gave a wonderful roadmap on how to use the concepts. Tammy's writing is comforting and genuine, and she walks you through getting to know your inner world in such a calm, compassionate way. I highly recommend it!
I like this book so much that I have recommended it to others, but I warn them that the typos are irritating. "Balling" when the author means "bawling," "nob" for "knob," even "are" when it should be "our." It pays to have a professional proofread your copy before you publish so that the typos aren't distracting from the message--and it's a good message.
I think this is a really approachable book to understand internal family systems. The '30 Days To Your Authentic Self' might be a reach, but I think the 30 day format was helpful in slowing down my typical pace, and motivated me to participate in and integrate the lessons. Every IFS book leaves me wanting more!!
