The book started interesting with a strong heroine and a funny meet-cute. Then the inconsistencies started: - she owned a marketing firm with one hundred employees, operating all over the US, with two of the world's largest companies as a client and sold it for a couple of millions, really so cheap? - all of that money was gone after settling her father's debts and her medical bills; - no explanation why she became an alcoholic; - instead of applying for a job in Atlanta in her field (she is very qualified and should especially with her connections have no problem to get a job and thus pay the mortgage for the B&B) she earns little money in a local diner; - Shane gives her a tour of the winery explaining the growth of grapes;...Shane led them down a row with towering vines, with various stages of grape growth. Some were plump, dark red grapes, others were tiny, baby globes of a lighter red. - it was winter, there are no fruits at least in European vineyards; - Shane and his father fear that his brother Colin might try to become CEO, instead of confronting him both plot how to best him; - not enough writing about the renovation of the tasting room, in the last chapter Emma and her cousin talk about the problems with the fireplace he successfully solved, but before they were not mentioned at all. - too much sex; - she desperately needs money but pours a 700$ bottle of whisky in the sink. - Shane constantly complains about jetlag; is there really jetlag with a three hour time difference? He leaves San Francisco at 9am, flies for 5 hours, gets to Madison Rodge at 5pm (EST), that would be 2pm his time, why would he be tired in the middle of the day?
These inconsistencies disturbed my reading experience, a good editor might help.
This was a dark, intense burn romance story perfect for a quick afternoon read. This was a great heart pounding read. The story was very well written with great characters. The story drew me in and I had it finished in one sitting. I would highly recommend this read.
This had potential but became inconsistent and drawn out. I wasn’t a fan of either of the characters, the writing style, and the plot/plot progression.
After a shaky beginning, the story picked up and presented a number of interesting secondary characters.
Emma Reynolds sold her lucrative business in Atlanta and moved back to her home town of Madison Ridge to help her mother. Her father’s gambling addiction left them severely in debt and it wasn’t until his death that they knew just how bad it was. But Emma’s father isn’t the only one in the family with an addiction. Emma is a recovering alcoholic who quite literally hit rock bottom when a drunken fall leaves her in a coma. Emma is two years sober and determined to stay that way. She is also determined to keep her childhood home, a former bed and breakfast and once she manages to save the property from foreclosure, she wants to return it to it to its former B&B glory.
But Emma can’t do that on a waitress’s salary and is hoping that she can land the job managing the Kavanagh Winery which was just purchased. Emma sees the dark humor of a recovering alcoholic running a winery, but this job will pay the kind of money she needs if she is going to save her home.
Shane Kavanagh has been running the KVN since his father began cancer treatments and his first big project is getting the Madison Ridge property up and running. His plans also include acquiring a property to house guests of the winery. Shane has found the perfect property almost adjoining the winery which is a former B&B and is on the verge of foreclosure. Shane is hoping to pick the property up for a steal from the current trust that is holding the property. If not, then he needs the bank to hurry on the foreclosure because with his father’s failing health, Shane needs to show the Board all the progress he is making on this new project if he is going to be named the new CEO without a fight.
Getting everything set up isn’t Shane’s biggest problem because he has hired the very competent Emma Reynolds to run the day to day operations. No, Shane biggest problem is that the lovely Emma haunts his dreams in a way that is very inappropriate for a key employee that Shane needs in the office more than should need her in his bed. And how can they risk their working relationship by crossing that line, especially since there are way too many secrets between them.
The story started off a little shaky in establishing some plot points. Some spoilers below:
Received a gift copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. This was a great small-town romance with some office romance added in. Two of my favorite tropes!
Emma was that strong female I really enjoy reading about. I also really liked Shane as well. I was intrigued with their backgrounds from the beginning and we slowly get more on both of them as the book goes on.
I loved that we got dual POV as well. You could almost see the trainwreck coming with these two before it got there, so I was anticipating it. It still didn't lessen the blow, though, because I was really rooting for these two throughout the book, so I felt for them.
This story was written well and I actually liked that it was a combo of closed door and spice. The story of the main characters was excellent and the growth between them as the book progressed is even better! I enjoyed reading Emma and Shane
I definitely recommend reading this book. I stayed up way later than I should have last night finishing the last 20% because author Eliza Peake threw in so many plot twists that kept me interested. It's like every time I started to lose interest, BAM! Another golden narrative nugget that made me want to learn more about the characters and what they would do next. It was refreshing to see a familiar story verge off into unfamiliar territory.
So why three stars instead of four? There were so many clunky sentences, especially in the first 50% of the book, that I almost stopped reading a few times. In fact, I actually deleted Trouble Me from my Kindle, removed it from my Goodreads shelf, and picked up a brand-new book to read. In a major testament to Peake's storytelling skills, I found myself thinking about Trouble Me (and talking to my friends about it), re-downloaded her book to Kindle, and resolved to finish it this time around. That almost never happens with me! This alone tells me that Peake has the ability to make it as a successful romance novelist someday, especially since this was her debut novel.
However, Peake needs to hire a really good copy editor for her next novel -- someone who will use that red pen aggressively. There were just too many times when I had to stop reading and go "huh?" because of a nonsensical simile or an awkward turn of phrase. However, syntax/diction is something that can easily be fixed with a little bit of practice and feedback. I'm convinced that over the next few books, we'll see Peake grow as an author by leaps and bounds. I can't wait to read her next book about the Madison Ridge crowd!
Well that was pretty great. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book because it’s written by a new author and the premise is one that could easily veer off course, but I was hooked from start to finish. The writing style is solid, the characters are flawed but likeable, the chemistry sizzles, and the romantic connection runs deep. It’s a great start to a promising new series (of standalones), and I would definitely read more by this author.
The story follows Emma, a recovering alcoholic who hit rock bottom two years ago and has fought to reclaim her life since. She’s in a good place with her sobriety, but is having some major financial issues and risks having her family’s B&B foreclosed on soon. Since she was once a successful businesswoman before things came crashing down, she interviews for the highest paying job she can find in her small town.... even though it happens to be for a winery. Shane meets Emma before the interview and is immediately attracted, but once he discovers that she’s the best candidate for the job at his family’s winery, he knows any sort of relationship is off the table. As the two begin working together, the chemistry between them is obvious and though they know it’s a terrible idea to pursue anything, neither one seems to be able to fight the attraction. But both Shane and Emma have major secrets they’re keeping from the other, which threaten the relationship they’re slowly building from sex to serious.
It would be so easy to dislike both of these characters, but the author does a great job making them relatable. Emma knows she’s messed up in the past, but she’s getting her life back together now. And Shane is a widower who struggles to find the right balance between commitments to his family and Emma. It’s a unique premise and a story that moves quickly from start to finish. I loved the connection between these two and though there is plenty of steam, there’s also something deeper as well. Kudos to the author for finding the right balance between angst and lightness, making this an emotional book without feeling overly heavy.

QOTD: Do you drink wine? My A: Nope! I’ve been sober for three years, but I’ve only had wine ONCE and it was boxed red wine in my college fridge. I’ve been told this is a travesty. . I’m back with another review from last March. For whatever reason, I was really behind on reviews last spring, apparently! . I love small town romances and the brewery/winery/B&B settings are always so fun! This had its fun and light moments while still handling heavier topics. The FMC, Emma, is a deeply flawed character, which only made her that much more relatable. I was trying to remember if I’d read a FMC that was a recovering alcoholic, so that was a new POV I really appreciated. While I wouldn’t classify myself as an alcoholic, I definitely spent years right on the line, abusing alcohol and suffering because of choices I made while intoxicated. I related to Emma a lot with her past struggles and the fight to pick up the pieces after you get sober. . I liked the chemistry these two had. I’m such a sucker for a rough around the edges MMC and Shane had just the right amount of attitude and angst. He was an ass, but one I wanted to root for. I wish they hadn’t waited so long to let each other in, especially Emma, but by the end their connection was solid. All in all, a really good story and worth the read! As a debut novel, this was impressive and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! . BLURB: The job should have been easy.
That’s what sassy, determined Emma Reynolds thought when she took the executive job at a local winery in order to save her family's bed and breakfast estate from the auction block.
But that was before she started working with the broody billionaire owner, Shane Kavanaugh.
Before their irresistible and unexpected chemistry moved them from the boardroom to the bedroom.
And long before she found out about his intention to wreck her legacy, her career, and—worst of all—her heart.
Her new boss with the hot and cold temper and panty-melting smile that makes her want to break all the rules is the last thing she needs, especially when her family estate is on the line.
I have mixed emotions about this book. One the one hand, I loved the secrets that helped build the angst of the reader. I kept waiting for the moment that both Emma and Shane found out about each other’s secrets. I understood Emma’s reluctance to reveal her past, but I did not understand why once Shane got to know her, she did not feel comfortable revealing it to him. I also felt horrible for her that her father’s addiction put that burden on her shoulders and her mother made her give up her future to salvage it. On the other hand, I felt like I was shorted on the drama. The attraction between Shane and Emma was there from the start I just wish it built up a little longer. The issues with the board and Colin seemed almost minimal. I expected that storyline to have brought more drama to the story and caused more issues between Shane and Emma. Overall, I did enjoy this story. A great start the Madison Ridge Series and I am eager to read the next one. I wrote this review based on an advance reading copy that the publisher sent me.
Truly a heartfelt read. Life was not good for her and she still stood strong. Despite everything, she was able to not fall apart. He was not helping himself at all when it came to his own life either. He should gave told his dad about her but he didn't until it was almost too late. I do believe the advice would be different if he had known.

OMG! I LOVED this book! Emma & Shane are wonderful, fully fleshed out characters with flaws & all. And Eliza’s writing style is so full of rich detail - the kind you NEED in a romance! I appreciate strong heroines in romance who can hold their own, & Emma did not disappoint. A dreamy, confident hero doesn’t hurt either! The setting, the storyline & the sexy swooning - OH MY! I can’t wait for book 2! Trouble Me is a five-star read for me, and one of my top picks for 2019. BRAVO!
What a good read! Not like the traditional romance novel, there was a good storyline separate from the romance. I couldn't put it down, I finished it in a day. I love the characters and the issues both Emma and Shane have brought a different aspect to the book, I think they are very relatable in many ways. Can't wait for the next one!!!!
I truly enjoyed Trouble Me, by Eliza Peake. It was face paced and full of heart. The storyline is strong and had me rooting for Emma and Shane to overcoming all the circumstances stacked against them and find the happily every after they deserve. I look forward to reading the next book .
Please note I received and ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a good romance the characters are really likable and real it also has a good interesting storyline that will suck you in and have you hooked right until the very end. I thought Emma and Shane were really great they both have their problems but you can't help but like and root for these two. This is the first book in the series and I can't wait for more.
I absolutely loved every single second of this read. The fact that Shane and Emma are imperfect is absolute perfection. Their story evolves at a perfect pace and is so sub tin drawing you in.

I bought this book during the one of Stuff Your Kindle Days and I’m not gonna lie, I choose this because the cover was pretty and seems pretty interesting. But the miscommunication trope ruined this for me.
This book has two points of view. The first point of view was Emma Reynolds, and she knows how to run a successful company. But when her life takes a troubling turn, she finds herself back home and determined to save her family’s estate – even if it means working in a winery as a recovering alcoholic. It turns out, her new boss, the broody billionaire owner, Shane Kavanaugh is far more tempting than the wine. The second point of view is Shane, and he is in the small town of Madison Ridge, and he is there to make a name for himself, and he will do whatever it takes to get it done. He is smart and hard-working which is a dangerous combination. However, he has got a lot of pressure to make the business work with his father having cancer and his health declining. Emma has a list of carefully crafted rules, but Shane is an irresistible and addicting package. But breaking those rules reveals secrets. Secrets that leave Emma facing the loss of her legacy, her career and her heart.
I liked this storyline and I’m a sucker for a small-town romance. I love everyone being in everyone’s business like the family intervention at the end and telling Emma that her alcoholic past isn’t going to affect her future and shouldn’t put her off from future relationship. I liked that they made sure to tell her they were proud of her for the progress she has made. I liked the growth of Emma and how she was feeling so guilty for not telling Shane the truth and didn’t know how to tell him and to be fair to Emma, they had just met, you don’t tell someone right away that you are a recovery alcoholic do you? I get that she should have disclosed it for her job working in Vinery and all but for personal relationships I wouldn’t have said anything straight away.
Shane took forever to grow on me like forever, like end of the book. He was rude and cold and then he was all I'm going to pay for your car and treat you like a queen and then cold again. I understand the pressure he was under and the conflict he had, but the way he reacted to Emma’s story is the reason why she didn’t tell him and then he just left. Emma forgiven him way too quickly because his father passed. Like I get it but also, I wanted him to crawl on his knees from California to Madison Ridge and I still wouldn’t have forgiven him. The miscommunication killed this book, the second Emma knew about Shane’s ex-wife, she should have been honest with him and said that she has struggles. Shane should have been honest with Emma, the second he knew Emma owned the house and that he was the one wanting to buy it. It would have cut the book down to maybe 100 pages.
I liked Emma’s family and from the preview I've seen one of Emma’s cousins is the main character so I'm looking forward to seeing more of Emma’s male cousins especially because they were all so sweet and protective to her in this book.
Shane Kavanaugh has some big shoes to fill as the prospective CEO of KVN industries. His father, Alan, is fighting cancer and the responsibility of keeping the family business running has fallen on Shane’s shoulders. He is tasked with overseeing the startup of a new winery in Madison Ridge Georgia as well as acquiring a bordering property to expand the amenities offered at the winery, but the owner is not willing to sell. Emmaline Reynolds hit rock bottom two years ago and has been steadily clawing her way out ever since. As a recovering alcoholic she is determined to never go back to her old ways that cost her everything she had built in her life. Trying to right her wrong, she is determined to hang on to the house her parents left her, but working as a waitress in the town diner isn’t paying the bills. She has her sights set on getting a job at the new winery to help her accomplish her goal.
This was a sweet redemption story for both MCs, they are both trying to prove themselves and end up finding true love along the way. I really enjoyed both characters and their paths to bettering themselves as well as their journey to their HEA.
Tropes: Smalltown romance/Enemies-to-Lovers/Work place PoV: Third Scene that got me sweaty: Strip poker.
This was my first book by Eliza Peake and will not be my last.
This is definitely more than just a romance book, it’s a story with very deep characters and an excellent planned-out plot. Emma, is working herself to the bone when an insanely good-looking man walks into the diner she is waitressing at to snag a table for dinner. Instantly, you can sense their connection, and even though the meeting doesn’t go as planned you know this isn’t going to be the last time we see the handsome man. Convinced she needs nothing else in her life besides securing and rescuing her family’s estate from ruin, she gets a job interview for the winery in town.
The man she waited on? Turns out, he’s the one with the Help Wanted Ad. And staying away from him is going to be harder than she thinks.
I loved this book and I already downloaded book 2. If you are looking for a new to you author, definitely check out Eliza Peake and grab Trouble Me.
Emma Reynolds’ life hasn’t been easy. And when she takes a job at a company where her boss Shane Kavanaugh is a whole new level of hott… things don’t get any easier.
I’m not usually crazy about the workplace romance troupe but OMG! Now I feel like I’ve been missing out!
Emma’s struggles are hard. I definitely would’ve given up way before she did. Talk about a trooper. I love her perseverance and how she works the problem. She isn’t one of those annoying and whiny FMCs. And then the way Shane struggles to resist Emma… And the way he calls her “Emmaline”😍🥵 Where do I sign up?
The spice is oh so satisfying. I’ll give you a hint… Strip poker. I’ll leave it at that and say nothing more. 🤐🌶️
I would consider this a light romance. There’s a small drop of suspense, but it’s not underwhelming. It’s enough to keep you questioning what comes next but not so much that your anxiety is blowing through the roof.
This book... I could not put it down. Started it at 2am, finished it at 4pm the next day. I did have to sleep at some point, and take care of my children too. Eat. Those things are really overrated! ;) I got to know Eliza Peake through her short story in the Steamy Anthology; I got to chatting with her on social media and really liked the person, and decided to give some of her other books a try. I don't regret it one bit! The story keeps bringing interesting plot twists, the characters have depths, the writing flows, makes you laugh, want to cry or cringe, certainly grow hot (I want to review my poker skills ;) ), the editing is flawless... I highly recommend it for people who are looking for a good romance book, but also for those who are ready for more than just romance, as Eliza Peake isn't afraid to brush difficult subjects such as cancer and addictions, poverty and financial struggles related to health problems in the USA.
The story of Emma and Shane: Shane meets Emma when he comes to town while she's working at the diner and although their first meeting isn't very sociable that doesn't stop Emma from going to a job interview for Shane’s wine company. Emma needs the job to save her parents' house even if that means putting herself to the test every day since she's an ex-alcoholic. Shane wants to buy Emma’s house but instead of telling her , he lets his attraction for her get the better of him and they end up starting an affair but when everything comes to light... 💥
Emma had a horrible evening at work, spilling the customers drink on him, by accident. As she was bidding the table, she tea Used the customer have her a $100 tip!
That started a whirlwind of happiness then sadness, then more joy again. Playing poker works for me, but I need a partner to play with!
I was given a paperback copy of this book as a gift and was skeptical about reading it because it was written in 3rd person. The blurb absolutely grabbed me, so I began to read it. Immediately it sucked me in. I got butterflies & all the feels while reading this book. You will fall in love with Shane and his moodiness as well as Emma, who is a strong heroine. I absolutely LOVED this story and I cannot wait to read about the rest of the Reynolds Clan!
