Illegitimate. Ruined. Two harsh words that leave two lost souls in search of belonging...
Christian Milnes can think of nothing besides meeting the four Graham siblings who share his blood. Ever since he learned of their existence he cannot pass a stranger without wondering if they could be his family.
Meliora Williams is unwed with a baby on the way and no one to turn to except the dishonorable man who broke her heart. Determined to find her own way in the world, she boards a train headed west to Montana.
Arriving at Aster Ridge Ranch, Mel is immediately entranced by the sense of freedom and possibility she feels under the wide prairie skies... as well as by the handsome young horse doctor Christian Milnes, who she senses is searching for his own brighter future.
Out on the western plains of Montana, anything can happen... As two hearts meet and entwine, a young man can find a family. And a young woman may find she is not so very broken after all.
This was such a tender story of redemption and forgiveness. Both of the main characters, Christian and Mel, had difficult pasts and I really enjoyed reading about how they met, became friends and eventually fell in love. Christian is born illegitimate and out of curiosity seeks out his biological family, not intending to let them know who he is. Christian must come to terms with his resentment of his biological father and his half brothers and sister, and his heart is softened when he meets Mel. Mel is a naive young woman who is taken advantage of by a man and left alone and pregnant. She is left with nowhere to turn except the same ranch Christian travels to to observe his family. Christian sees in Mel what his own mother had gone through, and he gains a greater appreciation of her AND Mel. This story is full of so many sweet moments!
Thank you to Kate Condie for the ARC of this awesome book!
I liked this book. I wasn’t sure about the premise at first but I liked the message of forgiveness and love. The end was great. Loved the message of family and how important that is. My only real complaint was that it took place over such a short period of time. That didn’t feel super believable. But overall a great story about redemption and forgiveness and finding courage to stand up for yourself.

This was a thought provoking and touching love story. The authors writing is seamless and the characters and trials and struggles are believable. A wonderful story about forgiveness and redemption blended with a wonderful clean romance.
This is my first book by Kate Condie, I enjoyed reading it and I am back and reading the rest of the books in this delightful book series.
Condie has a gift with her storytelling. She makes her characters and setting come to life. I was pulled into this story so easily, I could not find my way out until I was finished. Christian and Mel were not your typical main characters. They were flawed, broken, and had pasts they felt like they needed to hide. I was cheering Mel on the entire book. I wanted her to speak up, to stand up, to find her courage and her voice. Too often it is easier to please others than to say what you feel or think. And Mel was just like that. Seeing her change and grow during the length of the book was heartwarming.
Watching the Graham family take Mel and Christian in was completely heartwarming. You will fall in love with the Graham family. Their closeness, loyalty, love, and protectiveness of each other. I loved how they stood up for what was right, even under difficult circumstances. The Graham family has a place in my heart and I love this series and Aster Ridge! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love redemption stories and this one was beautifully written. Christian and Mel were perfect for each other. I love when two people with complicated hurtful pasts meet and they use their experience to mend each other. I loved the strength of an extended welcoming family. The plot was a bit of a roller coaster, but portrayed some realistic feelings and responses. It’s one of those books that remind me how fortunate I am to be a woman in modern times with more options for supporting myself.
My favorite quote was: “No wrong done could ruin everything.”
Content: clean. While intimacy is acknowledged, it is not on the page or the main focus. The message is of redemption and the importance of fidelity.
This is a well written book with strong characters in Christian and Mel. The author does a great job bringing these two together, helping to heal each other. She brings tons of emotion in this story of love and redemption. The scenes are painted perfectly and the story moves fluidly. Loved and recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
This was such a well written book! I especially loved the themes of overcoming past struggles, acceptance, forgiveness, and finding love in this story.
The characters in this book were all awesome. Mel and Christian were so great! I loved how Christian tried so hard to help Mel figure out what she wanted in life and how to stand up for herself. The supporting characters were all awesome as well. I loved the family dynamic among these siblings and how they were so loving and accepting of Christian and Mel.
I haven't yet read the first four books in the series, so I am looking forward to going back to read them.
I received an early copy of the book; all thoughts are my own.
A beautiful story of forgiveness, love and redemption! This is my second book from Kate Condie and it was good! I haven’t read all the books in the series, but since I read the previous one, I liked that the characters are becoming like a family to me. They are all part of the Graham family, with different personalities, and I like the way they are all kind, caring and supportive -well, except for Luc-, and have each other’s backs. This book is about Christian Milnes, a secret and illegitimate brother of the Graham’s. His childhood has not been a happy one, even if he has been provided for by his father, and he has suffered seeing his mother sacrifice so much for him and without a husband by her side. After she passes away, and he receives an inheritance from his father he decides to go to Montana to the Aster Ridge Ranch and meet his sibling without them knowing who he really is. What he doesn’t expect is to fall in love with them, and particularly with a beautiful stranger who quickly becomes family too, and lives the same plight his mother lived. Mel Williams is an orphan, who has never been loved by her aunts and uncles who have taken her in. But when Luc Graham, a man she thought loved her, deceives her and leaves her pregnant, then tells her he was not a bachelor, she is once more rejected and sent to live away with his siblings on a ranch in Montana. But this unique family surprises her when they easily start to warm up to her, and treat her with kindness, in spite of her marred reputation. And when she gets to know Christian, she discovers a kind of love that goes way beyond past mistakes and society expectations. But after living a life questioning her true worth, can she allow herself to be loved for who she really is? Can she stand up to the man who deceived her and wants to manipulate her to his desires? The story was full of emotions: fear, angst, bitterness, resentment, confusion, then hope, trust and love. It got me engaged with the drama from the start, and I was rooting the whole book for them to finally see their true worth and accept a life full of hope, new beginnings and a love that sacrifices. I have to say that I wanted to throttle them both at a couple of scenes. But then I reflected on how harsh their childhood was and understood better their struggles to let themselves be loved for who they were. Especially Mel, who had been treated like an adornment but not loved and cherished. I felt so bad for her at first, when she wasn’t strong enough to stand for herself. But nurtured with love and care, she slowly develops the courage needed to defend herself and the beautiful life in her womb. The way Christian and Mel both learn -through other’s kindness- about acceptance, self-worth and forgiveness was endearing and inspiring. The writing style is good and flows with feeling and emotion. It is easy to relate to the characters. I really recommend it to Historical Romance Lovers! I received an ARC copy from the author but was not required to post a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
What an emotional story of learning and healing from your past and being able to move forward with the strength and courage to forge a new path. I felt so many different emotions while reading this book, sadness, anger, hopefulness, absolute giddiness, it was wonderful. There were several times where A Secret Brother's Vow was very hard to put down.
Christian grew up with just his mother, having been born as the result of his father's affair with his mother. Now that he's grown, he has learned his father's name and has come into an inheritance. He also learns he has siblings, most of whom are out west, so he sets out to meet them. He just wants to meet them under pretenses of seeing one brother's ranch and move on. Mel is headed out west to the same place having been sent away because the man whose baby she is carrying is married and needs her out of sight and her family doesn't care to help her anymore either. Both arrive at Aster Ridge as outsiders, with secrets to hide and in need of family. Will their stories bring them together to form their own family?
I read the author's note that stated she got some raised eyebrows for this book being labeled "clean romance," but as a reader that reads only clean romance, I would say this totally counts! To me, just because one of the main characters is having a baby out of wedlock based on past decisions does not take away from the fact that it can be called "clean." There are no open door, explicit scenes. Any mention of sex outside of marriage is only referenced in past terms so it is not actively happening as the book. Sure, if you want to read a book where none of the characters were intimate before marriage, obviously this isn't the book for you. (Rant over) Overall I absolutely loved this book as I have enjoyed the rest of the series. It is a standalone so you can certainly read it by itself but the story fits into the overall tale of the Aster Ridge Ranch series so it enhances it by reading the other books as well. Certainly not a requirement though if you like reading books in any order.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am leaving an honest and voluntary review.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars ___________________________________________________________________ Story Notes
This is definitely not the usual when it comes to love stories. There is a lot of past and past mistakes that come into play and that created a lovely story that went beyond surface level content. Mel was hurt deeply by a man she had given her heart and self to. Now she's expecting a child and has no support from her own family. Though a bit put off by the reason for Mel's arrival the Graham family welcomes her as long as she wants to stay. I loved how kind they were even when they didn't have to be. They showed her mercy and grace and taught her how a real family behaves. Christian was a great addition to the story. He had no hope of finding a home with these other children of his father but he was determined to get to know them, even if just for a few weeks. They welcomed him too, and didn't shy away when he revealed who he really is. I loved that Kate made this story both both honest and real. Everyone in the story spoke and acted as actual people rather than just characters on a page. She didn't shy away from the hardships of their situations and gave voice to the consequences and the hurt that some actions caused. The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of was the love story between Christian and Mel. It was good but I just felt like it could have used more page time before the end of the story came. But I'll still be recommending this story as its one I think more people should read. It's not run-of-the- mill and that's what makes it stand out from others in the same genre. Looking forward to Hugh and Edna's story next!
I received this temporary complimentary E-book from Kate Condie via Bookfunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review but am most pleased to do so. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
At the end of a bandits Val Astor Ridge Ranch book 4, we met Christian the fifth Gram sibling. Although a secret from his siblings, Mr. Graham made sure he had a good education and a fair inheritance. Which he recently received due to the death of his mother. When getting on the train to go to Montana to secretly see what he could of his siblings he over here is a woman telling another woman when she says she’s alone she says well you have the babe… At first he thinks her a widow, until the ladies statement let him know she isn’t married to her babes father. Little does Christian know this was the mistress to Lukas Graham. Hey brother he just recently found out about. He sees so much of his mother and this girl who he keeps seeming to run into and he runs into her all the way until they both reach Astor Ridge Ranch. He can’t seem to drag his interest away from this demure insecure woman who fascinates him. The more he learns about her, the more he wants to protect her but what if his secret comes out? This book was so good I absolutely positively love Kate condors box. Her ass the ridge ridge Siri‘s is such a breath of fresh air in a world of historical romance that depends heavily Owen tropes and copy and paste scenarios. Whenever I get tired of the old tropes I always find myself reading an Astor Ridge Ranch book… Probably a winters ball… But I’ve read all at least twice. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next one A Soldiers Vow, But I guess I’m going to have to. If these books are the outcome though I will patiently wait they are so good and I love them and highly recommend them to any historical romance fan who wants quality over quantity. Please forgive any grammatical punctuation errors as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are my own.
This was my first book by Kate Condie but it definitely won’t be my last. Although this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone and I had no trouble at all following the story.
Synopsis: “Illegitimate. Determined to find her own way in the world, she boards a train headed west to Montana.”
Their paths cross when taken in by the families at Aster Ridge Ranch, people they are both tied to, yet don’t completely belong.
I really enjoyed how this book explored illegitimacy and how it permanently affected families of this time period. You were shown both sides of the story. A man who grew up illegitimate and was never accepted by others, and a woman naïve and now with child by someone who took advantage of her situation but does not care about her.
There was beautiful healing throughout this book. I loved the messages of love, acceptance, and forgiveness. It was nice watching Christian and Mel form a friendship and attachment with each other and even as their truths unfold they were still so accepting of each others situations. The family and cast of characters were well written and supportive.
I enjoyed getting to read this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romance settings in the American West.
This clean Western romance kept me turning the pages with endearing characters, fraught circumstances and heartwarming friendships.
Christian was embarking on a stealth journey when he overheard a snippet of a conversation that ended up changing his life more than the secret family members he recently learned he had. Growing up on the outskirts of propriety was a challenge and he was finally able to leave it all behind to live the rest of his life on his own terms. But, he couldn’t move into his future until he at least glimpsed what he was denied all his life. A family connection, siblings who lived the perfect life that he never had.
Meliora was an orphan who was often shipped between relatives like she was a parcel that no one was ever very happy to receive. Now she will do anything to ensure her unborn child would never live a day without knowing its loved and cherished. She made her mistakes but no way would her child suffer from her bad choices. Mel was a fierce wallflower that I was immediately drawn to.
This is a story of two resilient people who refuse to let the circumstances of their lives control their future and are willing to take a chance on true love. It’s a slow burn with the happiest ending and a lesson to never judge a book by its cover. Not going to lie, I did shed a tear.
This is a poignant tale of two unclaimed souls finding their true place in a world that often preferred to forget them. Don’t hesitate to grab it today!
I was privileged enough to receive an ARC of this novel and really enjoyed it:
Two souls, each alone and vulnerable in their own ways, meet in the most unlikely place and in the most hopeless set of circumstances only to find love and understanding--and suddenly, a future. Mel Williams was too trusting, and it led to her downfall as a woman with child, but with no husband to protect her and no family willing to take her in. Sent to live with the extended family of the man who ruined her, Mel makes her way around the Montana ranch wondering whether she'll ever be able to show her face without shame again. Meanwhile, Christian Milnes also makes his way to the ranch, but for an entirely different reason--the landowners are actually his half-brothers, though no one knows it but himself. He has no agenda other than to meet them, and certainly no plans to reveal their connection before he travels back east again for good. But then he meets Mel and sees the truth at once, that she's a good woman in need of protection and love, not the blight she believes she's seen as by the rest of the world.
This was such a touching read for me! Admittedly, I tend to lean more towards hot and steamy romance reads, but this clean romance really tugged at my heartstrings and gave me so much hope for love everywhere. Such a beautiful story with very deep characters who each feel so much, and everything wrapped up so nicely at the end as well. I definitely recommend.
Wow!! This story had all the angst, the feels and the family vibes.
It is a clean, historical romance set in Aster Ridge where the Graham family reside. The topic of children born outside of wedlock is front and centre of this story…one that needs to be told and the fallout that happened in the previous generations and what comes to pass in the current story.
Hearing the thoughts of both main characters and how their actions are dictated leads to some misunderstandings at times and thankfully, at the end, a very happy conclusion - sigh! Forgiveness and a loving family gives the hero and heroine a great hope for the future whereas before they felt hopeless in their own different ways.
The author brought the reader along with amazing descriptions of the scenery and painted the scenes so well that the reader could feel the coldness of the spring, the warmth of the fire and the love that unfurled as the story progressed.
The characters were all so unique and their personalities made the reader either warm to them or loath them !!
Thank you so much to author for providing an Advanced Reader Copy and giving me the privilege of reading this story - it was powerful!
This is my own opinion and I highly recommend this story!
"We can grieve our poor choices, but no choice defines the rest of our lives."
Christian grew up not knowing who his father was—an illegitimate child. As he struggles to reconcile a part of his history that he had no choice in, but that continues to shape how everyone else sees him, he falls for a woman who finds herself in a situation hauntingly similar to his own mother's.
A Secret Brother's Vow had beautiful redemption arcs and I loved the themes of family and community demonstrated by the other characters throughout the story.
I also loved Luc's character. I mean he's awful, but he's well written and while he sometimes acted in ways that were unexpected to me, they always seemed consistent with his character.
To be honest, I'm honestly not completley sure why Mel felt as violently betrayed by Christian's lie as she did, but their reconciliation was beautiful and I loved how the joy of the ending contrasted the more sober undertones that carried the rest of the book.
This is a sweet historical romance and a story of redemption and new beginnings.
Two main characters who both come from complicated backgrounds and situations, find the true meaning of family and belonging and love.
I enjoyed the characters in this story and the feeling of community. It was satisfying to watch Christian and Mel grow and work together. I loved the scene of them working together in the stable with the horses! I definitely wanted more sweet scenes Iike that between them! Especially because the whole book takes place in 2 weeks time, I wanted more romance before the ending! But I understood that both characters each had a lot of growth to go through first and needed to work on themselves before they went in to a relationship. I wish the story was longer than 2 weeks and we had more time! (Us greedy readers always wanting more more more (: but still a very sweet story!
This book is unlike any I’ve read before, and I loved it! Christian knew he didn’t have a father growing up, until he finds out as an adult who is father is and why he was never around. He was the mistress’s son. He wants nothing to do with his blood family, but he did want to see them before he moved on with his life. So he heads west to the Graham ranch.
Mel finds herself in the role of unwanted mistress with a baby on the way. The man she thought she would marry sent her away to his family’s ranch during her confinement. What she wasn’t ready for, was ALL the family that would be there. But will they support her?
The connection between Christian and Mel as they spend time on the Graham ranch is so sweet as neither really understands the whole story of the other. But when the truth comes out, will bloom be thicker than water?
I haven’t read any of the other books Kate had in this “vow” series, but after reading this one I’m going back to read more about the Graham family. It’s such a sweet story of redemption and as the reader we get to see life on both sides of the “mistress” is sure - the *grown* child and the mistress going through it alone.
Thank you Kate for the complementary copy! A positive review was not required but is much deserved.
A Secrete Brother’s Vow is out now and book 1 is FREE on kindle!
"He wanted to kiss her, but she'd already had so much taken from her on the wings of an empty promise. He wouldn't take anything until he'd proven his complete commitment-until they were married in the sight of God."
I loved this story. It is nice to have those stories that are not all cookie cutter. They show a different side then what we might be use to reading or out of the norm of what is done.
This story helps remind us that our mistakes don't define us. That yes we may have made choices that were not the wisest but that we don't have to constantly suffer from them. We can still have happiness in our lives. We can still find the family that we are searching for. Don't let our choices hold us back from the greatest blessings that we have waiting for us. We can find the redemption that we are seeking for in our life.
Beautiful story of redemption, forgiveness, and love. While the heroine becomes pregnant with a married man's child (not knowing he is married at the time) he sends her to live with his family. She is mostly accepted but fully feels the shame. This aspect of the story was written well. Mel comes to love the place and family that surrounds her and finds strength to stand up for herself. Christian also comes to the ranch searching for answers. He was born illegitimate and wish to meet the Grahams who he believes are his family. He quickly grows close to Mel and only wishes to protect her. I loved their connection and the overall story of family and overcoming past struggles. I got a little lost in the large cast of characters but that might improve if the previous books in the series are read first.
Whew! This book was heavy! I felt so many emotions while I read, and I was drawn into the characters. I didn’t realize this was the 5th book in a series, and read it without knowing the previous books. It worked just fine as a stand-alone for me. This was my first book by this author as well, and I really enjoyed how well her words flowed. Some books I have read recently didn’t flow as well, so it was nice to read this. I was heart-broken and almost hesitant when I started this book. The story line was not what I expected at all. Both MC’s had such tragic stories and backgrounds. It was a page turner and overall I would give it 4.5⭐️ I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I highly recommend this book. There are two characters in this book that are both bound for the Graham ranch. One was ruined by Luc Graham (such a jerk) and the other a brother who the Graham’s never knew about. Aster Ridge is a very interesting place I have read a few books featuring this place and each were intense, engaging, and excellent reads. This book blended into mix well. Where I can write pages on what I liked about this book in fact the whole series I really do not want to spoil another’s enjoyment. I strongly suggest you pick up this book, the whole series really the stories, the characters, and the writing is first rate. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, which gives me more confidence with going back and reading the rest of the series after feeling thoroughly disappointed in Ivette's entry).
I will preface that to me, this wasn't really a romance between Christian and Mel. I mean yes there is a romance but that's not what grounded the story for me. Instead it was more following the individual self-discovery arcs of both Christian and Mel as they find themselves, and then each other. And to me it was very successful from that lens.
Both Mel and Christian were easy to root for, and their individual stories were compelling enough to carry a story. I loved how their friendship developed, and they were an easy couple to get behind.
Thank you to Katie Condie for sending me an advanced copy of your book for review!
A Secret Brother’s Vow is a sweet story about two people with difficult pasts finding love and acceptance. It was nice to see how both Mel and Christian grew closer with the Graham family, as well as with each other. The story discusses many topics, from family and belonging, to women’s lack of options during the historical time period.
This book is the fifth in a series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone. There’s a lot of side characters that starred in previous books in the series, and while you are introduced to each of them, it may be easier to keep them all straight if you’ve read the other books. But otherwise, you can start the series from this book.
While this may not have been my favorite romance, I enjoyed seeing Mel’s and Christian’s journeys. I also appreciated the topics that the book discussed, especially at the end. I would recommend if you are looking for a clean historical romance that doesn’t shy away from showcasing characters with troubled pasts. 3 stars.
Mel was dating a man that she really liked and then she found out that she was pregnant, only to find out that the baby's father, her boyfriend, already had a wife. So he paid for her to leave and go live with his family. The house was crowded with children and his brother's and their wives.
While Mel was on the train ride she met Christian only briefly, actually when she came out of her cabin and hit him with the door.
He is there to secretly meet his family that he just recently learned that he had. His mother was a mistress and he just recently discovered who his father was. The family does not know that he is related to them.
This is a sweet and loving story between a man and a woman that both feel they are broken by their pasts. They accidentally me on the train going to the same place and neither knowing the other. Both were conceived out of wed lock and trying to overcome their pasts and dreams of a future. Christian is the illegitimate son of one of wealthiest men in Boston and Mel is carrying the grandchild of Luc Graham, Christians half brother. Their destination is owned by the second Graham son. This family lives with questions and deception galore. You will enjoy discovering how Christian and Mel find their happily ever after.
This is an excellent book about two people living with disgrace. Christian is a bastard. He just met his father after years of not knowing who he was. Mel is an orphan who was shuttled from one uncles family to another. Each taking her but not welcoming her or loving her. Her last family wanted to get rid of her but she had no more family to pass her on to. A business partner of her uncle’s came to the house an started to woo Mel. However no one mentioned that he was married. When she ends up pregnant he ships her off to his brother’s and sister. It turns out that Christian was going to the same place. The business party was a half brother.
I had the pleasure of reading the first two books of the Aster Riggie Rance series by Kate Condie before reading this book, which is book 5 of the series. However, I can honestly say that it can be read as a stand-alone book or as part of the series. Condie possesses a gift in storytelling that brings her characters and setting to life. The way she paints the scenes is perfect and the storyline flows seamlessly. Christian and Mel, the main characters, are not as typical as one would expect. They are both flawed and broken and have pasts they wish to hide. I found myself easily drawn into the story and couldn't put the book down until I finished it.
This story was well written with two characters who have the secrets they carry.
Although the characters and plot are well developed I must admit the overall storyline left me feeling sad…here were two characters lonely and unloved most of their lives. They glimpse it in the family they are introduced to and it invokes more emotion. The unfaithfulness and selfishness of two characters caused mayhem in others lives. Although it ends with a happy ending the majority of the book felt gloomy to me.
This was another great story of this Chicago family finding homes inMontana. Two of the brothers and one sister had found mates and started having babies. Another lady arrived to their valley. Brother Luc had sent her there because she was having his baby and he already had a wife. Another man turned up in their valley, just checking out Willem ‘s guest ranch. He was a half brother that they did I not know about. So much more to come, just enjoy.
