Usually I really, really dislike tournament stories. It is my most despised anime trope. And since this book is anime inspired/adjacent I'm lumping it in with the trope. There is nothing in this world that can bring a story to a screeching halt faster than setting everything that is happening on the back burner so that the characters can participate in a pointless tournament. When an anime/manga/light novel I'm enjoying heads into a tournament I either skip the tournament, because nothing of value ever happens during it, or it just turns me off of the series entirely. Naruto - tournament. DONE. Fairy Tail - tournament. DONE. One Punch Man - tournament. DONE. Jujutsu Kaisen - tournament. DONE. I just mentally check out the moment a tournament starts. There are rare exceptions, like My Hero Academia, but on the whole, tournaments are pointless filler that is basically just wasted space in the story. I don't like when stories waste my time. And that is what anime tournaments are. A waste of my time.

Thankfully, the tournament in this book is both plot and character relevant, as well as IN THE FREAKING BACKGROUND for most of the book, and does pay off with a pretty good climax. It is the B plot of this episode. The main plot is far more interesting, and takes up the majority of the book.

I started this series because it sounded like something light and easy to read between fantasy epics, and that was exactly what it started out as. A cute, fun, mostly harmless story that I could sit down and read in a single afternoon. But with each book, things get bigger and more impactful, and with this latest book in the series, downright epic. I was not expecting that when I first started this series, but I'm not complaining.

So, yeah, I had fun with it, and I like how this series is shaping up. I'd have given it 5 stars, but I have to knock one off for the tournament on general principle, plot relevant though it might have been. It's like a law or something.

Gripping to the end

I have read a lot of light novels in similar settings but this one has become a favourite.

The story is simple (but by no means boring) and easy to follow unlike other light novels that get over complicated and skip important details. You really can get an understanding of the world and the way it works. The magic aspect is also well explained and the characters are well developed. All common aspects I see fall short in more fan service focused light novels.

This book was the most exciting yet with several twists and turns that kept you gripped but never confused.

I eagerly await the next installmemt ^^.
