By the end of the day my best friends will all be dead….

I’m not very interesting. Most people just leave me alone. I’m poor and on my own more than I’m not.

Lately, however, I’ve caught the attention of five guys who I never expected to know. Rowan. Ace. Tanner. Griffin. Caesar. They are rich. Powerful. Gorgeous. Sometimes they set things on fire. And, they’re loaded with secrets they won’t tell me.
I think I want to know what they’re hiding. I’m wrong.

Once they share their truths with me, I’ll never be the same. It turns out, everyone is a servant of the darkness, whether they know it or not.

*The reader should be aware this is book 1 of 3. The happy ending comes with book 3. The heroine is stronger than she knows, the guys filled with depths they can’t imagine, and the heat will build from sweet in this novel to very intense by book 3. Please read accordingly. You have been warned.*

Depressing. Cliffhanger ending.

Trigger warning: drug abuse, kidnapping, child abandonment, physical & emotional abuse etc etc

TBF the author does warn of this & future cliffhangers & of triggering content. She also warns a HEA is set for the final book in the trilogy.

My advice is if you’re interested to wait until all three books have been published & marathon read the series. That way you’ll prevent any depressing bits from overtaking your enjoyment of the story.

Maci's life is not glamorous. She lives in a trailer park with her junkie mother. She goes to school and work. She works hard at school to maintain her grades. She works to keep food on the table and keep the lights on in the trailer. She has no friends; the only human interaction she has is with her teachers, her boss, and the nights her mother brings home her "friends". Maci's world is hard and lonely and she dreams of leaving. Until one day when she asks a group of boys to please be quiet in the library. One simple request changes her life. Forever. She gets one magical week.

I loved this book. I have always loved vampires and have literally read hundreds of books starring the cold ones. They come in all forms. Some are brutal, inhuman, ancient, hypnotic, unnerving, some suffering, misunderstood, glamorous, powerful, or wealthy. Some even glitter. All are seductive. I've read about born vampires or ones created by curses, viruses, or turned. I thought every idea had been fully explored. I was so wrong. Rebecca Royce has created a totally original vampiric story. Unique. Tremendous. And if that's not enough, she has thrown in a prophecy and reincarnated love. And if that's not enough it's RH with five incredible guys, Rowan, Ace, Tanner, Griffin, Caesar. I feel ridiculously spoiled with all the riches she threw our way with this book.

Maci is my favorite type of heroine. She comes from less than meager beginnings with a troubled background but she hasn't let the world beat her. She's smart, strong, independent, hard-working, and while damaged not broken. She has hope for herself and her future. If appearances mean anything, the guys have a charmed life but appearances are deceiving. They have given up but Maci makes them feel again. For one week, they have everything. It's so sweet and innocent. Then heartbreak. My emotions went haywire for the remainder of the book, sadness, disgust, fear, regret, anger, hopelessness. Finally, shock, horror, and disbelief. I ended this book with a gasp. I'm usually a patient person waiting until follow-up release. I don't know how that will be possible this time. I read this book in one sitting and immediately wanted more. It was so good. Then it all went so wrong. Since I know this author, I know I will eventually get my HEA but the road there will be twisted and uphill. I just want to get on the road now. I want to go to the forest, see the stars, learn what Maci has forgotten, get some proof the guys still exist. I want Maci to be okay, better than okay. I want Maci to live her dreams. I feel I've been bitten, consider me addicted.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Rebecca Royce!

Servant is the first book in the Trials of Blood series and tells the story of Maci and her guys, Ace, Caesar, Griffin, Rowan and Tanner.

Servant is the second book I’ve read by Rebecca Royce and this one was so different from the first book I’ve read by her. The first book was Gunmetal Lily, a Mafia Romance, and Servant is a Fantasy Romance. So since this book was a different genre, I didn’t know what to expect. But I’m really happy that I picked up this book because I really enjoyed reading it! The story was so interesting and I was kind of sad when I finished reading Servant because I didn’t know this book was going to be part of a trilogy. But oh well, a trilogy means two more books about Maci and her guys!

Servant tells the story of Maci, Ace, Caesar, Griffin, Rowan and Tanner. As you may have noticed by the number of guys, Servant is a Reverse Harem Romance. Sometimes the difficulty with RH is that the guys can be too similar, but I didn’t have that feeling with the guys in Servant. They all had their own personality with different traits. I really liked getting to know Maci and the guys, but I wish we got to know them even better! Let’s hope book 2 shows more of their personality.

I really loved Gunmetal Lily, so I did have some expectations for Servant. Although I really enjoyed reading this book, I do have to admit that the beginning was a bit mehh. But the more I read, the more I wanted to get to know the characters and wanted to know how the story was going to end. I’m really happy that I gave this book a chance because now I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series, Paramour. I’m so excited to read more about Maci and the guys, so let’s hope book 2 will be out soon!

I need the next book! ASAP!

Where do I begin?
This is my first review and I've read a lot of books on kindle, but I'm a sucker for good guys who treat a girl right. Maci is surrounded by Rowan, Tanner, Griffin, Caesar, and Ace: five lovely guys who are respectful but have a very big secret. Maci is cool like she's very understanding but acts appropriately if not a bit too well in stressful situations. Maybe, I've read so many books in this genre where everyone acts like they're five with no basic communication skills. This book was refreshing. THEY TALKED TO EACH OTHER! LIKE THE 16/17 YEARS OLD HAD GREAT COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Anyway, the cliffhanger killed me and the plot twists were a lil abrupt. If the book was longer and explore some themes more, I think it would have flowed better. I assume all of that will be addressed in book two.

Servant is the first book in Rebecca's new Trials of Blood trilogy and Oh.My.Word. I finished this book last night and I'm still thinking about it today. Our heroine is Maci. She doesn't have a father and she really might as well not have a mother either. Her life would be easier if she didn't. She has been taking care of herself, going to school and working. Trying to save up so when she graduates in a few years she can leave and never look back. She doesn't have time for friends or a social life. Not that many people would want to associate with her anyway thanks to dear old mom. But she usually just keeps to herself and stays out of everyone else's way. Until one day, she doesn't. "Stop". One word. That's all it takes to alter the course of her life.

Rowan, Griffin, Ace, Tanner and Caesar aren't your typical high school boys. They aren't into the things your normal teenagers would be. They already know what their future holds for them. They are less than thrilled with it too. They are just biding their time, awaiting their doom. Until Maci speaks up. That one word changes their lives too.

Honestly in the beginning of this book, I wasn't too sure. There were a couple of moments that had me like, eh. But I love RR's work and I knew she wouldn't let me down and I'm so freaking glad that I kept going. Once you get down into the meat of it all, man, what a story. My heart just broke for Maci. All that she has to endure. Then for it to all end like it did. Ugh, RR did us dirty. LOL She did tell us that it wasn't going to be a happy ending on book one though so we knew it was coming. Didn't lessen the blow any. I'm really intrigued by the little pieces I'm putting together of the story though. Anticipating what is going to happen in the future. I have a feeling that our poor little Maci is going to be one fierce lady coming soon. I can't wait!

Why did you read this book?
I wanted to read dark RH romance books and this one seemed interesting.

What format did you read this book in?
Read it as an ebook on Kindle

Is this an educational book or a book for entertainment?
I read this book for pure entertainment purposes.

What genres do you think this book belongs to?
Contemporary, Fantasy, Horror, Paranormal, Psychology, Romance, Young Adult

What was your favorite part in the book?
My favorite part is when the guys went to all that trouble for her birthday.

Who would you suggest this book to?
Anyone who likes vampires and doesn’t mind some triggering content.

What is your general opinion/ rating of this book?
I am conflicted. I kind of liked it but I didn’t at the same time. There were so many troupes to the point that some of the plot points were very predictable and eyeroll worthy. I also think that this book did a bit of a bait-and-switch. The guys were so sweet and kind to her, then the second half of the book was so hard to read. The poor MC was abused by her mother, had a short week with the guys, then was physically assaulted (non-sexually) / drugged for MONTHS, while having to be a slave! My heart broke as the MC found herself where her mother was. Overall, I think this book could have used more expansion on the guys and who they were as individuals. MC was a bit too naïve for someone living in the situation she did. The authors writing style doesn’t flow well in my opinion and seems a bit choppy. The cliffhanger is forcing me to read the next book.

Are there any cliché scenes or concepts? (If yes, does the author add something unique to them?)
It seems that the MC has something special about her. The author reveals this to the reader by moments the MC doesn’t remember but we as the readers get to see. (Betrayer in the woods that mind controls her and her dreams.) Common Vampire and prophecy troupes. Love interests insta-loving the MC.

How intense are the intimacy scenes?
There are none in this book. Just kissing.

At what “burn” level is the romance?
Slow burn.

Love interests, how many of them are there and what gender?
There are 5 love interests, all of them human then turn into vampires.
Rowan- the leader.
Ace, Caesar, Griffin, and Tanner.
(They all seem to have the same personality and are hard to tell apart.)

Any trigger warnings?

From reading the blurb to this book, it's not very clear that the main characters in this book are a tad on the young side (around 16-18 when the book first begins). This age range isn't my normal cup of tea, but Rebecca really did something wonderful with it. If you're one to want steam in your RH books, this first book most likely isn't going to check some boxes for you as the most that really happens is kissing, but I suggest you give it a shot anyways. I have a feeling that the next book in this series will take it up a notch or two. However, what was great about the lack of steam in this format book was that you got to see how the connection that Maci had with her five guys seemed almost immediate and how utterly sweet they were to her. Sometimes you need a book that's one the sweeter side of the spectrum instead of a bully or enemies-to-lovers romance.

Royce's take on vampirism is also something that I think will catch your eye while reading. The typical vampire bite and exchange of blood isn't the only case in this book, making it really stand out to me. It was interesting to see how some of the vampires were created and also the extent of people in the know about these particular supernaturals. In so many shows and books the human world is kept oblivious to those around them that are different but I was surprised how this particular town had more than just a few people wanting to switch sides and be changed.

The ending of this book will definitely leave you wanting, mainly because there's a lot to question about what will happen next with these characters. There's mystery surrounding Maci and her sleepwalking, her pull to the guys, and The Betrayer as well. I can't wait to find out the backstory to how the past lives of these six characters affect their current vessel and how they blend into the people they are now. Will the connection still be as obvious or will Maci have to work to remind her guys who she was to them before they made the switch?

This is a new series and from the first page I was hooked.

Maci works hard and studies in the library after school before heading to work. On this particular day five of the richest, most powerful, gorgeous guys in the school are there as well. Rowan, Ace, Tanner, Griffin and Caesar being loud and when Griffin throws a book at Tanner. Unable to help herself Maci tells them to stop. As a result of this Rowan apologizes but then they all join her at her table. Little does she know this encounter will change her life.

Although she's only sixteen her mother frequently disappears, other times she has men at the trailer with her. Maci has managed not to be noticed most of the time and locks herself in her room. She only has one more year and with meticulous saving she was leaving this town forever. At least that was her plan.

Now this book we learn the guys have a big secret they were trying to keep from her, unfortunately circumstances change, and she finds out they are going to be vampires, soon.

There is an interesting occurrence of her sleepwalking and an encounter with 'the betrayer'. She doesn't remember this and we as the readers get to know it's happened many times before.

This is the beginning of a love story that is both dark and satisfying in spite of or because of the relationships between Maci and her mother, and the guys and their fathers.

I laughed, cried, screamed and cried some more as this book touches my heart and makes me angry on Maci's behalf. I really can't wait for the next book, I have a feeling things are going to get very interesting, very quickly.

Servant (Trials of Blood Book 1) Kindle Edition

by Rebecca Royce

Thank you to the author for the complimentary reviewer's copy. I am choosing to leave a fair and honest review.

Rebecca Royce breaks all the tropes and stereotypes of dark academia reverse harem romances. Instead of bullies turned lovers, she makes the five boys into sweet and loving young men. Her heroine does fall into the poor girl who falls for the five males.

Maci struggles to stay alive. Her mother is a drug addict with all the baggage that comes with it. Maci has three speeds, work, school and exhaustion. She believes she will never escape the pattern of her life, although she plans to run on her eighteenth birthday. All of that changes when she speaks to the boys, Rowan, Ace, Cesaer, Tanner and Griffin in the library. That day brings changes she could never have imagined. The boys are vampires, born and bred.

While definitely not one of her best, it is an interesting change for this genre of romance. It is clean, because the characters are in high school. But it feels as if about a third of the story could have been cut and the dialogue is a bit stilted for teenagers, who are even more self-aware than the Dawson's Creek crew. It also feels like the first chapter in a much longer book or perhaps it would have been a perfect flashback.

As always, her characters are complex, three dimensional beings that could walk off the page. Her vampires are a unique breed, something different than most of the fanged bunch. The writing is mostly up to her usual standards, which is far better than most mass market writers.

All in all, a great read.

Getting a new series from Rebecca Royce is a bit like Christmas morning for reverse harem fans. And this particular gift definitely does not disappoint. This is book one of her new Trials of Blood series, and I already can’t wait for book two. And before you think this is just another vampire series, think again friend. As I’ve come to expect from this author, there’s a new and interesting twist to this familiar trope. This first book chronicles our heroine Maci’s first two years (age 16 to 18) after meeting the five young men who she’s inexplicably drawn to and who over time become her entire world. Her life has always been hard, but with every secret she learns, the true darkness and brutality of the world she lives in becomes all too clear—the love of her guys the only bright spot in her existence. I was intrigued after reading the first page of this book then well and truly hooked by page two. The plot is surprising and inventive, and the characters are real and compelling. I found myself on the edge of my seat quite often while reading. And if I wasn’t on the edge of my seat, I was about to fall out of it from swooning so hard. I am now completely invested in this story and these characters and seriously cannot wait to see what comes next. If you’re a fan of reverse harem, I highly recommend this book. And if you’re not a reverse harem fan, read this book. I bet you’ll become one.

What an awesome beginning to another great series from Rebecca. Maci's life has never been good. Living with an mother addicted to drugs is not easy. She had to grow up fast to take care of them both. Getting herself to school then working to keep the utilities on and eating when possible. But what she hated most was the mms end her mother brought home. She had to keep her guard up from them cause she never knew when a attack might occur.
At school she made herself invisible to everyone until that day in the library she told the five kings of the school to shut up. She never expected them to answer or even take an interest in her but they did. It's like they had been waiting for her to talk to them. They took over and rammed themselves into her life. They told her they could be friends but ask no questions about their lives. She wanted to keep hers a secret also.
It was like a whirlwind for her. New things she didn't know about. A life she planned to get when she ran away. She never expected to fall for them.
This book had so many aspects to it. It started out as a love story but when she found out the boys secret it became something else. The story grew more intense, intriguing, violent, sad and heartbreaking. Maci goes through a lot of good and bad. She deserves so much more than life has given her so far. I hope she gets more good I'm her life in the next book.
I loved this book and can't wait for the next one to come out.
I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.

Hold onto your seats!!! 💗

EPIC start to a new series!!! Prepare now as it does end with a jaw dropping cliffhanger that will leave you screaming for book two. Book one starts with our main character Maci at the age of sixteen...so in this one there's no sexy time, but it's setting up the premise of the series. The male characters are mysterious and hiding stuff from her which is fun for the reader to guess. The town itself also seems to harbor something mysterious...so there are definitely layers within this glorious read. I cannot wait for book two as I have no doubt we shall see exactly what Maci is made of. Not to mention maybe a few of these secrets might be revealed? Though Maci now knows one of the big ones, there's more to the story here...and I have a feeling the guys and their dads don't know everything either. Not to mention, I think the parentals are underestimating a certain young woman. I cannot wait to see what's up next. Pretty sure there will be a time jump coming up in the next book(s), but I'm just guessing here. Either way the story is brilliant and I'm hoping we don't have long to wait 😉💗.

Ok first, what is wrong with that teacher! Good grief. Sorry, I just had to say that.

Maci had not had an easy life. A mother addicted to drugs will do that to you, add in the other stuff that goes on at home, and she has basically raised herself. She keeps her head down and doesn’t draw attention to herself. That is until the 5 hotties of the school notice her one day.

Rowan, Ace, Tanner, Griffin & Caesar care about Maci and show her the first true affection for the longest time. But things are not as they seem in this town, there is a dark secret that could leave Maci more broken then before.

I absolutely loved this book and characters and need to see what happens next.

Absolutely loved it and need more

Absolutely loved this book, great way to start the series. The characters in this book are younger so there isn't much steam but RR does so goo with the book you don't even need it ( though there will be some in later books).

Maci is trying to keep her head down until she turns 18 and graduates. But her off handed comment draws the attention of Rowan, Ace, Tanner, Griffin and Caesar.  Once decision changes her life for the better and worst.

Though Maci comes from a rough upbringing it doesn't stop her from fighting the odds. But she runs up against things that she can't fight after meeting the 5. The storytelling and world building allowed you to get to know the world and the characters before they all change dramatically.

I can not wait until book 2 to see what happens. Even though the guys will change got to admit I'm most excited to see what becomes of Maci.

First of all, I went into this book completely blind. All I knew about it was that it was written by Rebecca Royce which was most definitely a selling point for me. I haven't read a book of hers that I haven't liked. Given that I have read her books before, I was fully prepared for this book to be some type of reverse harem. That said, this book was definitely not was I was anticipating... in the best way. This was such an interesting spin on vampire mythology. As soon as I realized there were secrets, I had an idea of what those secrets were, but the way the vampirism was brought in was fresh and unique. I was pretty much hooked from the first page. I don't know when we can expect book two, but I can't wait to find out what happens next for Maci.

Actual: 4.5

If you’re looking for a vampire diaries type book, this is not it. Sure it’s high school and it’s a slow burn but the way Rebecca Royce characterized the vampires is not soft. It’s gritty and calculating. And it’s amazing! Maxi is a young girl just trying to get through her days. She lives in a trailer park, her mom is a junkie that jumps from guy to guy, just trying to score and get cash which she then spends on drugs because what else would you do with cash? She meets five guys at her school and they’re immediately smitten. It’s a good and sweet romance that brought tears to my eyes. Then Maci is suddenly thrusted into learning very quickly about vampires, who the guys are and who their fathers are. Super informative, really intriguing. Can’t wait to see what happens next with Maci’s story.

Can't wait for the next book!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It gave me major The Covenant vibes and that has always been one of my favorite movies. This is definitely a slow burn romance. This is book one, so Rebecca Royce is definitely laying down a sturdy foundation. You are getting to know the characters, their backgrounds and family dynamics. You're getting to see how their relationships with each other have developed and the roles they fill. And man is she heating up all that angst and yearning!! They are only 16-17 years old in this book, so while there is no actual sex- there is definitely a building up of sexual tension. These characters are just really meeting and falling head over heels for each other. There is also a huge mystery to uncover! Little by little, the pieces are coming together. I loved it and I'm so excited to see what happens next!!

so different

Amazed by this book, I love how you never know more than the main character but she also doesn’t get more information than when she is meant to. Was really something different then I normally read. I also love how they went against the normal archetype of ‘bully romance’. I think the how interaction with the guys went to quick but then thinking about it, everything did happen in the space of a week or two so it made it more authentic to her story. Again I love how the ending was different to what I expected. I wasn’t sure how they were going to play the waiting area of the book but I’m glad it wasn’t fully skipped over but the ending was completely different to how I thought it might have been. Look forward to reading more of this series when it’s Available. Loved it, something fresh and new to me.

Heartwrenching love story

Maci grew up in a trailer home with a mother who kept doing a disappearing act. She went to school and worked part-time so she could keep a roof above her head and sometimes be able to buy food. At school she knew there were some boys who were deemed the elite. They came from nobel families and seemed to have it all. One day Maci struck up a conversation with them and this led them to becoming fast friends. They showered her with endless complements and wanted to buy her the world. They did however, keep saying that their time was limited and they wanted to spend it all with her. She felt herself falling for them all and didn't want this fairytale to end. Unfortunately, time caught up to them and what followed would change all of their lives forever.

First and foremost let me start off by saying that I do not buy books that are not a finished series. So imagine my surprise, when I got the first two of the apparent three book series, and the first part of this book read that this was an unfinished series. That there is a third book that is not even written yet. I didn’t even want to start reading it. In fact, I wanted to return them. However, I am slowly running out of books to read. So I held onto this book for months. I finally started it and guess what the third book still not started…

All of that being said- I like HEA and this just doesn’t read like that. How Maci is treated is not okay with me- I don’t have triggers so that wasn’t it,.. but with how the boys knew their fathers they should have known better.

What an amazing story! Trials of Blood is such a unique idea for a story. I love all vampire stories and this story is so different and intriguing you can't help but LOVE it. Maci doesn't have a great home life and is just trying to make it till she graduates it. Little does she know there is a whole other world out there that may be even scarier.
When Maci catches the attention of Rowan, Ace, Tanner, Griffin, and Caesar they are immediately drawn to her and want to protect her. The question is how long will they actually be able to protect her. My heart hurt for Maci after what happens. I won't say what so no spoilers. I'm just devastated. I can not wait for the next book!

Maci’s life changes in the blink of an eye. She learns that life is not always fair or will go the way that she thinks it will. Maci and her men begin their story in this book. All is not rainbows and flowers and they will have to fight their way to their happy ending. Readers should be aware that this is book one of this new series and it ends on a cliff hanger. The book has an interesting new look at vampires. I am excited to delve into this world some more and see their story continue. The author does a good job of bringing readers a new and imaginary world that pulls you in and has you wanting more.

amazing adaption of a vampire RH

This is a YA book, though I’m not sure the series will end up that way, and the reason is because of the main character’s age.

Mack is a sweet, sheltered girl because she’s never had luck. She’s never enjoyed any fun in her life, never enjoyed anyone doting on her, or even showing her affection.

The one time she speaks up changes everything, and it the catalyst for so many moves. This book ends on such a cliffhanger, I’m confused, concerned, and I’m wondering how it all ties in. That doesn’t often happen, and I cannot wait for Paramour!

Story 📖: 5/5
Heat 🔥: 1/5 very little steam due to age.
Cliffhanger 🏔: 5/5

OH MY GAWD! How are you going to end a book like that!??! My poor heart is literally broken! I read Servant in one sitting, Maci was so unique, open minded and eventually beautifully heartbreakingly broken. She has survived so much. And don't get me started on the five; JUNK PUNCHES FOR EVERYONE! GAH, to say I need book two right now is an understatement.

The web that Rebecca Royce wove with all the layers, the things we still do not know have left me not only with a massive book hangover but with SO MANY QUESTIONS! I am an idiot for not reading this book sooner! Definitely a must read!

The writing was boring here. There wasn’t enough stylization. Everyone is a sad sack, which yeah they all have reasons to be, and it’s so insta. All of that combined with the boring writing made this painful to get through. All the characters dialogue and the hs inner dialogue read the exact same. I kept getting characters mixed up. I kept falling asleep. It’s a bummer because the storyline is interesting. There are like tiny hints that this would have made a really cool haunting gothic romance but the author just didn’t know how to get it there completely. The last 1/3 was much better. I’ll probably try book two because I’m interested in what is going to have to the h.

Overall: 2.5

Servant

Just wow. I started reading this book and just couldn't stop reading it. Maci has had a rough life and has kept to herself and just tried to get by. One fateful day, she speaks to the most important boys in school.... well in the entire town. Her life changes in that instant. Things are not what they seem in her small town, and neither are the boys who soon become her world.
What an amazing start to a new series, I can't wait to find out what happens next and get some answers to questions that are burning in my head right now

One’s life can change in an instant. And Maci realizes that a bit too late when she interacts with five guys who rule the school and seemingly the town. She has no idea how true that is and what will eventually happen.

Maxi is quite likeable and one feels sympathy for her situation. Her home life is so bad that I wanted to rip her out the book and hug her. The guys are rather an odd bunch that I hope to get to learn more about. To me in this book they were interchangeable.

A little slow in the beginning but by the mid way point, I wanted to learn more about the world the author built.

Brilliant read. Great start to a series.
Maci has to work hard and study. she knows that it is the only way she will get by in life. She is the one who has to work hard to provide which makes life lonely until she attracts the attention of 5 guys who turn out to be her best friends. they come to mean so much in such a short time. But happiness can not be expected here as although she has found some happiness it cannot last as by the end of the day her best friends will be dead, but at least she will be alive. but alive is not what she wished for.
brilliant read. i cannot wait for more.
